Uit: The Crying of Lot 49

„It took her till the middle of Huntley and Brinkley to remember that last year at three or so one morning there had come this long-distance call, from where she would never know (unless now he'd left a diary) by a voice beginning in heavy Slavic tones as second secretary at the Transylvanian Consulate, looking for an escaped bat; modulated to comic-Negro, then on into hostile Pachuco dialect, full of chingas and maricones; then a Gestapo officer asking her in shrieks did she have relatives in Germany and finally his Lamont Cranston voice, the one he'd talked in all the way down to Mazatlan. "Pierce, please," she'd managed to get in, "I thought we had --- "

"But Margo,"earnestly, "I've just come from Commissioner Weston, and that old man in the fun house was murdered by the same blowgun that killed Professor Quackenbush," or something.

"For God's sake," she said. Mucho had rolled over and was looking at her.

"Why don't you hang up on him," Mucho, suggested, sensibly.

"I heard that," Pierce said. "I think it's time Wendell Maas had a little visit from The Shadow." Silence, positive and thorough, fell. So it was the last of his voices she ever heard. Lamont Cranston. That phone line could have pointed any direction, been any length. Its quiet ambiguity shifted over, in the months after the call, to what had been revived: memories of his face, body, things he'd given her, things she had now and then pretended not to've heard him say. It took him over, and to the verge of being forgotten. The shadow waited a year before visiting. But now there was Metzger's letter. Had Pierce called last year then to tell her about this codicil? Or had he decided on it later, somehow because of her annoyance and Mucho's indifference? She felt exposed, finessed, put down. She had never executed a will in her life, didn't know where to begin, didn't know how to tell the law firm in L. A. that she didn't know where to begin.“

Uit: A Greyhound of a Girl

“Mary O'Hara was walking up her street, to the house she lived in with her parents and her brothers. The school bus had dropped her at the corner, at the bottom of the hill. The street was long, straight, and quite steep, and there were huge old chestnut trees growing all along both sides. It was raining, but Mary wasn't getting very wet, because the leaves and branches were like a roof above her. Anyway, rain and getting wet were things that worried adults, but not Mary - or anyone else under the age of twenty-one. Mary was twelve. She'd be twelve for another eight months. Then she'd be what she already felt she was - a teenager.
She came home at the same time most days, and she usually came home with her best friend, Ava. But today was different, because Ava wasn't with Mary. Ava had moved to another part of Dublin the day before, with her family. Today, some of the neighbors looked out their windows and saw Mary, alone. They knew all about it, of course. These were people who looked out windows. They'd seen the removals lorry outside Ava's house. They'd seen Mary and Ava hug each other, and they'd seen Ava get into their car and follow the removals lorry.
As the car moved slowly up the street, they'd seen Mary wave, and run into her house. They might have heard the front door slam. They might have heard Mary's feet charging up the stairs, and the springs under Mary's mattress groan when she fell facedown on the bed. They probably didn't hear her crying, and they definitely didn't hear the softer sound of the bedsprings a little later when Mary realized that, although she was heartbroken, she was also starving. So she got up and went downstairs to the kitchen and ate until her face was stiff.”

Was tut's?

“One
They were walking along the river path, away from the city, and as far as they knew they were alone.
They'd woken that morning to a curious stillness. Clouds sagged over the river, and there was mist like a sweat over the mud flats. The river had shrunk to its central channel, and seagulls skimmed low over the water. The colour was bleached out of houses and gardens and the clothes of the few passers-by.
They'd spent the morning indoors, picking away at their intractable problems, but then, just before lunch, Lauren had announced that she had to get out. They might have done better to drive to the coast, but instead they donned raincoats and boots and set off to walk along the river path.
They lived on the edge of what had once been a thriving area of docks, quays, and warehouses, now derelict and awaiting demolition. Squatters had moved into some of the buildings. Others had suffered accidental or convenient fires, and were surrounded by barbed-wire fences, with pictures of Alsatians and notices saying DANGER. KEEP OUT.”

North Beach Alba

waking half-drunk in a strange pad

making it out to the cool gray

   san francisco dawn –

white gulls over white houses,

   fog down the bay,

tamalpais a fresh green hill in the new sun,

driving across the bridge in a beat old car

A spring night in Shokoku-ji

Eight years ago this May

We walked under cherry blossoms

At night in an orchard in Oregon.

All that I wanted then

Is forgotten now, but you.

Here in the night

In a garden of the old capital

I feel the trembling ghost of Yugao

I remember your cool body

Naked under a summer cotton dress.

Uit: The Fifties

„It is as if I had ended by subsiding into this comfortable and familiar atmosphere when I ought to be doing other things. [ Wilson spent the 1964-65 academic year at the Wesleyan Center for Advanced Studies. ] I had meant to do so much with Russian, but have only read Nabokov's Onegin and started on, but not finished, Oblomov. Wellfleet, Summer 1966

These awards I am getting make me rather nervous. [ Wilson had received the National Medal for Literature and an award from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. ] They mean that I am an O.K. character like Thornton Wilder. When I think about how stupid old frauds like Herbert Hoover and John F. Dulles get buildings and things named after them, without people's seriously protesting or considering it inappropriate, I realize that an accepted reputation can be derived from no real merit whatever. In Jordan, Spring 1967

Now that I can see far behind and a little beyond, the period of my own life and in fact that of known history seems to me extremely retreci [ shrunken ] . I used to find history exciting and shall continue to read it, but I now feel that I know more or less the kind of things that happen. The closer to life you get, the more the great events diminish; the easier transportation and communication become, the less strange other places and peoples seem. (I am writing this in Jordanian Jerusalem and am not at ease with the Arabs, but since I was here last, this part of the city has been modernized and is more like any Western city.)“

Uit: Shark Trouble

“Then there's the oceanic whitetip, whose Latin name so aptly describes the creature that I'll burden you with it: C. Iongimanus, or "long-hands." This shark's pectoral fins are extraordinarily long and graceful, resembling the wings of a modern fighter jet. Longimanus tends to stay in the deep ocean, and nobody on earth has the vaguest notion about total numbers of long-hand attacks because the people they do attack are either adrift, alone, or survivors of shipwrecks, who don't much care what species of shark it is that's harassing them. I'd bet that many of the crewmen of the Indianapolis, in 1945, were killed by long-hands, but no one will ever know.

I do know, however, that longimanus is unpredictable, scary, and demonstrably capable of killing a human. There's a story about one that attacked two U.S. Navy divers in the deep waters of the Tongue of the Ocean in the Bahamas. The shark took a big bite out of one of the divers and then, as the diver's mate fought it for possession of his friend, dragged the diver into the abyss. Finally, at a depth of about three hundred feet—far beyond safe scuba depth—the mate had to choose between letting go of his friend and dying himself, and he watched as shark and body disappeared into the gloom.

Long-hands are my personal betes noires—one of the few species of shark of which I am genuinely and viscerally afraid. A couple of decades ago one made an honest effort to eat me. I don't blame the shark for trying, because my situation fell well within the bounds of Stupid Things You Should Avoid at All Costs, but the near-miss scared me— and scarred me permanently— nevertheless.

Verrukkelijk.

Brief

Lamme smeerlap, met je baard,
dor van geest maar dicht behaard,
die ons daar stond aan te staren
of wij huursoldaten waren.

'k Weet nog alles, luizig dier,
ook al zit je ver van hier,
teruggetrokken en stokoud
in een blokhuis vol met goud.

Dat je er Stein hebt uitgetrapt
nadat hij je had verklapt
hoe je schatten kon verdienen
met de bouw van zijn machinen.

Hoe je Berends in de stront
hebt gewreven, als een hond,
toen hij 't boekjaar niet kon sluiten
door die fout van zeven duiten.

Hoe die halfwas, smal en bleek,
van zijn gulden in de week
vijftig centen af zag romen,
want hij was te laat gekomen.

'k Weet het nog, zoals je ziet,
maar ik snap vandaag nog niet
hoe die negen duizend koppen
dat zo lijdzaam bleven kroppen.

Had een flinke delegatie,
na 't verwerpen van je gratie
je maar even beet gepakt,
even op de vloer gesmakt,

je die baard eens afgeschoren,
met of zonder je twee oren,
je die broek eens afgedaan
om je voor je kont te slaan.

Maar al is het niet gebeurd,
uitgesteld is niet verbeurd.
Wij staan klaar om ons te wreken
zonder je de nek te breken.

Want komt ooit de rode tijd
door je slaven lang verbeid,
vóór nog dat je met je botten
bent gedolven, om te rotten,

dan word jij benoemd per se
om de piesbak en de plee
schoon te maken als het hoort
in de Beurs of Delftse Poort.

Uit: The Wind from the East (Vertaald door Samantha Schnee)

“Before breaking into a run toward him, in a gesture that had become second nature, he checked Alfonso's fly and confirmed with relief that it was closed. His poor brother-who continued sniffing the air like the slow, confused creature he was-would be the focus of plenty of attention in that sterile, private community, even without holding his sex in the palm of his hand. Arriving at Alfonso's side Juan hugged him carefully, smiling at him, and kissed him on the cheek before putting his arm around his shoulders to guide him. Alfonso moved his head up and down three times in a row, so sharply it seemed he would shake his head from his neck. It was his way of showing agreement. While the two brothers walked along the narrow sidewalk, not unlike a little road up to a dollhouse, the wind swirled a tumult of bougainvillea petals around them, pink, red, purple, inert, light as feathers, and Alfonso Olmedo finally smiled. Tamara, leaning against a wall waiting for them, clutching a colored jewelry box, two books, and a Barbie to her chest, received them with laughter. Her two uncles had blossomed. The petals dusted Alfonso's bald head and Juan's hair, their pants, their shirts, and their arms, giving them a comic but ambiguous appearance, something between two badly camouflaged soldiers and two street mimes that had decided to dress as trees to attract children's attention. Juan shook himself off and brushed the petals off Alfonso while all three laughed, before gently herding his family into the vestibule. As he closed the door he wondered if all this, the new house, the new job, the new town, so many hundreds of miles away, had not been a mistake. He thought to himself that it was still too early to know.”

“My sweet Laura Lee.
Life lay in your eyes,
in your smile and your anger and voice.
My sweet Laura Lee.
Life was there 'cause of you.

Ach, hun vader was nóg vroeger opgestaan!

Doe snel no?!’

Earth's Immortalities

FAME.

See, as the prettiest graves will do in time,
Our poet's wants the freshness of its prime;
Spite of the sexton's browsing horse, the sods
Have struggled through its binding osier rods;
Headstone and half-sunk footstone lean awry,
Wanting the brick-work promised by-and-by;
How the minute grey lichens, plate o'er plate,
Have softened down the crisp-cut name and date!

LOVE.

So, the year's done with
(_Love me for ever!_)
All March begun with,
April's endeavour;
May-wreaths that bound me
June needs must sever;
Now snows fall round me,
Quenching June's fever---
(_Love me for ever!_)

Immortal Autumn

I speak this poem now with grave and level voice
In praise of autumn, of the far-horn-winding fall.

I praise the flower-barren fields, the clouds, the tall
Unanswering branches where the wind makes sullen noise.

I praise the fall: it is the human season.
Now
No more the foreign sun does meddle at our earth,
Enforce the green and bring the fallow land to birth,
Nor winter yet weigh all with silence the pine bough,

But now in autumn with the black and outcast crows
Share we the spacious world: the whispering year is gone:
There is more room to live now: the once secret dawn
Comes late by daylight and the dark unguarded goes.

Between the mutinous brave burning of the leaves
And winter’s covering of our hearts with his deep snow
We are alone: there are no evening birds: we know
The naked moon: the tame stars circle at our eaves.

It is the human season. On this sterile air
Do words outcarry breath: the sound goes on and on.
I hear a dead man’s cry from autumn long since gone.
I cry to you beyond upon this bitter air.

Uit: Parrot and Olivier in America

“My childhood was neither blessed nor tainted by the célérifère, and I would not have mentioned it at all, except—here it is before us now.
Typically, the Austrian draftsman fails to suggest the three dimensions.
However:
Could there be a vehicle more appropriate for the task I have so recklessly set myself, one that you, by-the-by, have supported by taking this volume in your hands? That is, you have agreed to be transported to my childhood where it will be proven, or if not proven then strongly suggested, that the very shape of my head, my particular phrenology, the volume of my lungs, was determined by unknown pressures brought to bear in the years before my birth.
So let us believe that a grotesque and antique bicycle has been made available to us, its wooden frame in the form of a horse, and of course if we are to approach my home this way, we must be prepared to push my uncle’s hobby across fallen branches, through the spinneys. It is almost useless in the rough ground of the woods, where I and the Abbé de La Londe, my beloved Bébé, shot so many hundreds of larks and sparrows that I bruised my little shoulder blue.
“Careful Olivier dear, do be careful.”
We can ignore nose bleeding for the time being, although to be realistic the blood can be anticipated soon enough—spectacular spurts, splendid gushes—my body being always too thin-walled a container for the passions coursing through its veins, but as we are making up our adventure let us assume there is no blood, no compresses, no leeches, no wild gallops to drag the doctor from his breakfast.“

Closed Path

I thought that my voyage had come to its end
at the last limit of my power,---that the path before me was closed,
that provisions were exhausted
and the time come to take shelter in a silent obscurity.

But I find that thy will knows no end in me.
And when old words die out on the tongue,
new melodies break forth from the heart;
and where the old tracks are lost,
new country is revealed with its wonders.
