De Annunciatie, Fra Angelico, rond 1430

The Annunciation

The angel and the girl are met.
Earth was the only meeting place.
For the embodied never yet
Travelled beyond the shore of space.

The eternal spirits in freedom go.
See, they have come together, see,
While the destroying minutes flow,
Each reflects the other’s face
Till heaven in hers and earth in his
Shine steady there. He’s come to her
From far beyond the farthest star,
Feathered through time. Immediacy
Of strangest strangeness is the bliss
That from their limbs all movement takes.
Yet the increasing rapture brings
So great a wonder that it makes
Each feather tremble on his wings.

Outside the window footsteps fall
Into the ordinary day
And with the sun along the wall
Pursue their unreturning way.
Sound’s perpetual roundabout
Rolls its numbered octaves out
And hoarsely grinds its battered tune.

But through the endless afternoon
These neither speak nor movement make,
But stare into their deepening trance
As if their gaze would never break.

Uit: Pride And Prejudice

"I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better, for as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr. Bingley may like you the best of the party."

"My dear, you flatter me. I certainly HAVE had my share of beauty, but I do not pretend to be anything extraordinary now. When a woman has five grown-up daughters, she ought to give over thinking of her own beauty."

"In such cases, a woman has not often much beauty to think of."

"But, my dear, you must indeed go and see Mr. Bingley when he comes into the neighbourhood."

"It is more than I engage for, I assure you."

"But consider your daughters. Only think what an establishment it would be for one of them. Sir William and Lady Lucas are determined to go, merely on that account, for in general, you know, they visit no newcomers. Indeed you must go, for it will be impossible for US to visit him if you do not."

"You are over-scrupulous, surely. I dare say Mr. Bingley will be very glad to see you; and I will send a few lines by you to assure him of my hearty consent to his marrying whichever he chooses of the girls; though I must throw in a good word for my little Lizzy."

"I desire you will do no such thing. Lizzy is not a bit better than the others; and I am sure she is not half so handsome as Jane, nor half so good-humoured as Lydia. But you are always giving HER the preference."

"They have none of them much to recommend them," replied he; "they are all silly and ignorant like other girls; but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters."

"Mr. Bennet, how CAN you abuse your own children in such a way? You take delight in vexing me. You have no compassion for my poor nerves."

"You mistake me, my dear. I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends. I have heard you mention them with consideration these last twenty years at least."

Mr. Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three-and-twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. HER mind was less difficult to develop. She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. When she was discontented, she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news.”

Uit: Ed. Hoornik

“Ed.

Let's do it

Mr. Irving Berlin
Often emphasizes sin
In a charming way.
Mr. Coward we know
Wrote a song or two to show
Sex was here to stay.
Richard Rodgers it's true
Took a more romantic view
Of this sly biological urge.
But it really was Cole
Who contrived to make the whole
Thing merge.

He said the Belgians and Greeks do it
Nice young men who sell antiques do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
Monkeys whenever you look do it,
Aly Khan and King Farouk do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
Louella Parsons can't quite do it,
For she's so highly strung,
Marlene might do it,
But she looks far too young.
Each man out there shooting crap does it,
Davy Crockett in that dreadful cap does it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.

Our famous writers in swarms do it,
Somerset and all the Maughams do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
The Brontes felt that they must do it,
Ernest Hemingway could-just-do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
E. Allan Poe-ho! ho! ho!-did it,
But he did it in verse.
Stowe did it,
But she had to rehearse.
Tennessee Williams self-taught does it,
Kinsey with a deafening report does it.
Let's do it, let's fall in love.

In the Spring of the year
Inhibitions disappear
And our hearts beat high,
We had better face facts
Every gland that overacts
Has an alibi
For each bird and each bee,
Each slap-happy sappy tree,
Each temptation that lures us along
Is just Nature elle-meme
Merely singing us the same
Old song.

In Texas some of the men do it
Others drill a hole-and then do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love
West Point cadets forming fours do it,
People say all those Gabors do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
My kith and kin, more or less, do it,
Every uncle and aunt,
But I confess to it-
I've one cousin that can't.
Teenagers squeezed into jeans do it,
Probably we'll live to see machines do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.

Each baby bat after dark does it,
In the desert Wilbur Clark does it
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
We're told that every hormone does it,
Victor Borge all alone does it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
Each tiny clam you consume does it,
Even Liberace-we assume-does it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love!

de cactusdoorns steken niet

de cactusdoorns steken niet

alle liefde is verslapt

de strakke groene zuilen

zijn door de wind gebogen

in het negerlied dat zong

van mensen en van dieren

is de ziel verkoeld

er zijn hagelkorrels aan de bomen

door een mistroostig missieland

loop ik in de doffe zon

de cactusdoorns steken niet

er zijn hagelkorrels aan de bomen

Rode wereld

In de modder op het kerkhof

kotste ik bollen van armoede

uit

maar wat baten

balen stro

of gebeden

wanneer de weegschaal zelf

steeds schommelt?

Als modder niet weg kan

wassen

alle ontgoocheling en verdriet

door de wolken aangedragen

en aangeprezen,

dan kan

ook ik geen hoop koesteren

ooit vrij te hangen

in de lucht

en verlangen

dat de wereld zwart wordt.

The Dead Angels

(Buscad, buscadlos)

Search, search for them:

In the insomnia of forgotten conduits

In gutters blocked by the muteness of litter.

Not far from the pools incapable of retaining a cloud,

A lost eye

A broken ring

Or a trampled star.

            For I’ve seen them:

In the rubble momentarily appearing in the mist.

For I’ve touched them:

In the exile of a defunct brick,

Come to naught from a tower or a cart,

No longer beyond the crumbling chimneys,

Nor the tenacious leaves that stick to shoes.

            In all of that.

More in those stray splinters consumed without flame.

In those sunken absences broken furniture endures.

Not far from the names and signs that grow cold on the walls.

            Search, search for them:

Beneath the drop of wax that buries the word in the book,

Or the signature on the corner of a letter,

That brings the dust rolling in.

Near the forgotten fragment of a bottle,

The sole of a shoe lost in the snow,

The razor-blade abandoned at the edge of a precipice.

Les deux abeilles

pierre-lachambeaudie-fabuliste

L'Association. »

Uit: London Perceived

“Before us are ugly places with ancient names where the streets are packed with clownish Cockneys and West Indian immigrants, the traffic heavy. Some of them on the north side between Tilbury and Bethnal Green are slums, dismal, derelict, bombed; some of them so transformed since 1940 by fine building that places with bad names – Ratcliff Highway and Limehouse Causeway and Wapping – are now respectable and even elegant. The old East End has a good deal been replaced by a welfare city since 1946. We pass Poplar, Stepney, Shadwell, Deptford, Woolwich, the Isle of Dogs – where Charles II kept his spaniels – and now mostly dock, with the ships’ bows sticking over the black dock walls and over the streets. We pass Cuckold’s Point, where one of the kings of England gratified a loyal innkeeper by seducing his wife. Until the sixteenth century – according to the delightful Stow, who said he “knew not the fancy for it” – a pair of horns stood on a pole there, a coarse Thames-side warning, perhaps, of the hazards that lie between wind and water.

Londen, Thames en Tower, 2011

The Thames, we realize, was for centuries London’s only East to West road or, at any rate, the safest, quickest, and most convenient way that joined the two cities, one swelling out from the Tower and the other from Westminster. And there is another important matter. It is hard now to believe as we go past these miles of wharves and the low-built areas of dockland where one place now runs into another in a string of bus routes, but this mess was once royal.”

Uit: Country Lodgings

“Between two and three years ago, the following pithy advertisement appeared in several of the London papers:--

"Country Lodgings.--Apartments to let in a large farm-house, situate in a cheap and pleasant village, about forty miles from London. Apply (if by letter post-paid) to A. B., No. 7, Salisbury-street, Strand."

Little did I think, whilst admiring in the broad page of the Morning Chronicle the compendious brevity of this announcement, that the pleasant village referred to was our own dear Aberleigh; and that the

first tenant of those apartments should be a lady whose family I had long known, and in whose fortunes and destiny I took a more than common interest!

Upton Court was a manor-house of considerable extent, which had in former times been the residence of a distinguished Catholic family, but which, in the changes of property incident to our fluctuating neighbourhood, was now "fallen from its high estate," and degraded into the homestead of a farm so small, that the tenant, a yeoman of the poorest class, was fain to eke out his rent by entering into an

agreement with a speculating Belford upholsterer, and letting off a part of the fine old mansion in the shape of furnished lodgings.

Nothing could be finer than the situation of Upton, placed on the summit of a steep acclivity, looking over a rich and fertile valley to a range of woody hills; nothing more beautiful than the approach from Belford, the road leading across a common between a double row of noble oaks, the ground on one side sinking with the abruptness of a north-country burn, whilst a clear spring, bursting from the hill side, made its way to the bottom between patches of shaggy underwood and a grove of smaller

trees; a vine-covered cottage just peeping between the foliage, and the picturesque outline of the Court, with its old-fashioned porch, its long windows, and its tall, clustered chimneys towering in the distance. It was the prettiest prospect in all Aberleigh.”

YOUTH

Youth is spring!

The soul, full of flowers, shines,

Believes in good, loves life, dreams and waits

And easily forgets misfortune.

It´s the age of strength and beauty:

Looks at the future and still has no past;

And, facing Nature upfront,

Does not fear daring work.

Loves awakening, loathing sleep;

Has projects of glory, loves Chimera;

And still doesn´t give fruit as autumn,

For it only gives flowers as spring!

Skagen

I’m the one who’s painted

the pictures at the Skagen museum.

I said to myself

that is your life and then

I began to paint.

I think it all started with the lunch picture

I got so hungry

felt quite at home.

I painted Krøyer and Drachmann

Tuxen, Ancher – her and him

and all the others

right down to Tørsleff.

It was a colossal undertaking

but I was feeling fine

so that didn’t matter.

Drachmann helped me a bit

and Krøyer

we talked a lot

looked

and drank just a little.

We looked at Skagen

painted lots of pictures

brought out the light

but most perhaps a way of life

our own

the one I fell for.

I remember the hours

with Krøyer’s wife

beneath the elders at Drachmann’s,

the burgundy in those heavy glasses

and everything seen

in summer images

melancholy

as if it was all long over.

I remember the evenings at the Prong

the waters that met

and the trouble getting the colours

to toe the line

after all I was the one who was going

to paint everything

wanted to paint everything

before it was no longer there.

There was a scent of death

idyll and linen drawers with lavender

about my Skagen canvases,

but there was plenty of life

back then

there was that.

We got up from the table

after the long drawn-out lunch

and the voices had become more subdued.

We stood in the twilight

before going home our separate ways

but it was hard to take our leave.

Then Anna Ancher turned round

and said:

We’re going to sleep now.

She took her husband’s arm,

went with him through the gate

and slowly everyone followed suit.

The steps died away between

the houses

the host put out his lamp

it was too late to do any more painting.

Winternacht op Texel

Het land ligt naast het harde zwarte pad
Onder de maan verloren en verzonken.
Het water glanst verleidelijk en glad
En 'k loop daarlangs volkomen vrij en dronken.

Mismaakte en zotte wilgen zonder blad
Wringen geweldig hun gekorven tronken...

I

Want Harold Lloyd is een begeerlijk man

Waarom de kappersknechts hem sterk benijden;

God, geef me toch een kilo melinite!

Uit: Saints And Sinners

“A hostage who had been released in some African bush after sixty-seven days in detention seemed dazed by the posse of journalists who surrounded him. I looked at the weather forecast for New York, where I had often spent St. Patrick’s Day and stood among milling crowds as they cheered floats and bands, feeling curiously alone in the midst of all that celebration.

My appointment was with a doctor whom I had been seeing for the best part of a year and who had just moved to this less salubrious part of London, had left his rooms in Primrose Hill, probably because of the rent’s being exorbitant. This would be my first time at this new abode, and I dreaded it, partly because I had left, as I saw it, fragments of myself behind in that other room, with its stacks of books, an open fire, and an informality that was not customary between patient and analyst. Sitting there, with an eye on the wall clock, I kept checking on this new address and asked Adrian about such and such a road to make doubly sure that I had not gone astray. Yes, he knew the man, said he had been in several times, which I took to imply that my doctor liked a drink.

Meanwhile, Clodagh was bustling around in an emerald-green pinafore, reciting a verse for all to hear:

Boxty on the griddle,
Boxty in the pan,
If you can’t make the boxty,
You’ll never get your man.

The light from the leaded-glass panels danced on her shadow as she flitted from table to table, extolling the miracle of the boxty potato bread and dragging a duster over the round brown tables that bore the mottling of years and years of porter stains.”

Unzugänglich schien der Gipfel

Unzugänglich schien der Gipfel;
Nun begehn wir ihn so leicht.
Fern verdämmern erste Wege,
Neue Himmel sind erreicht.
Urgebirg und offne Länder
Schweben weit, in Eins verspielt.
Städte die wir nachts durchzogen,
sind ein einfach-lichtes Bild.
Helle Wolke streift herüber;

Quels demi-dieux enfin nos jours ont-ils vus naître ?
Ils se traînent à peine en leur vieille jeunesse ;
Courbés avant le temps, consumés de langueur,
Enfants efféminés de pères sans vigueur ;
La mort qui les attend au sein des voluptés ;
Enrichir nos Phrynés dont ils gagent les vices ;

Eyes of hope and ecstacy

Crystalline, jewelled eyes.
Turquoise blue or green.
dressed in toy baby clothes
bought at age seventeen.

Of the blood-line of killers;
Cataclysmic Odetta.
Danced in the murder halls sipping
absinthe, and eating fetta..

A playful little serial kitten
experiments with MDMA
Flashing strobe-lite, convulsive twitching
her ecstacy eyes spelt D.O.A.

To some that might seem
like a bulletted shame...
But it's really only temporary.
She says, '...And I'm to blame! '

And all the fun with her posse
they been havin, its all good & clean.
'Compared to those seduced and
Corrupted by, the War & Death Machine...'

Thats ecstacy in Her eyes.
...and deeper..

Haying Before Storm

This sky is unmistakable. Not lurid, not low, not black.
Illuminated and bruise-color, limitless, to the noon
Full of its floods to come. Under it, field, wheels, and mountain,
The valley scattered with friends, gathering in
Live-colored harvest, filling their arms; not seeming to hope
Not seeming to dread, doing.
I stand where I can see
Holding a small pitcher, coming in toward
The doers and the day.
These images are all
Themselves emerging : they face their moment, love or go down,
A blade of the strong hay stands like light before me.
The sky is a torment on our eyes, the sky
Will not wait for this golden, it will not wait for form.
There is hardly a moment to stand before the storm.
There is hardly time to lay hand to the great earth.
Or time to tell again what power shines past storm.

Alberquerquee baby

sneeuw, herfstblaadjes of
de plastic bekers na Koninginnedag, desnoods
je schopt

maar zij verdwijnt niet
jouw Albuquerquee baby
en met boliderode lippen
drukt ze vlinders in je kraag
