Gottes Schweigen
Trank ich aus dem Brunnen des Hains.

Auf meine Stirne tritt kaltes Metall
Spinnen suchen mein Herz.

Klangen wieder kristallne Engel.

Im Winter

Der Acker leuchtet weiß und kalt.
Der Himmel ist einsam und ungeheuer.
Dohlen kreisen über dem Weiher
Und Jäger steigen nieder vom Wald.

Ein Schweigen in schwarzen Wipfeln wohnt.
Ein Feuerschein huscht aus den Hütten.
Bisweilen schellt sehr fern ein Schlitten
Und langsam steigt der graue Mond.

Ein Wild verblutet sanft am Rain
Und Raben plätschern in blutigen Gossen.
Das Rohr bebt gelb und aufgeschossen.
Frost, Rauch, ein Schritt im leeren Hain.

Kaspar Hauser lied

O mens!

Stil vond zijn stap de stad in de avond;
De donkere klacht van zijn mond:
Ik wil een ruiter worden.

Hem echter volgden struik en dier,
Huis en schemertuin van witte mensen
En zijn moordenaar zocht naar hem.

Voorjaar en zomer en mooi de herfst
Van de rechtvaardige, zijn stille stap
Langs de donkere kamers van dromenden.
's Nachts bleef hij met zijn ster alleen;

White Nights

No one here,
and the body says: whatever is said
is not to be said. But no one
is a body as well, and what the body says
is heard by no one
but you.

Snowfall and night. The repetition
of a murder
among the trees. The pen
moves across the earth: it no longer knows
what will happen, and the hand that holds it
has disappeared.

Nevertheless, it writes.
It writes: in the beginning,
among the trees, a body came walking
from the night. It writes:
the body's whiteness
is the color of earth. It is earth,
and the earth writes: everything
is the color of silence.

I am no longer here. I have never said
what you say
I have said. And yet, the body is a place
where nothing dies. And each night,
from the silence of the trees, you know
that my voice
comes walking toward you.

Draußen

In Gesprächen wohn ich nicht gern.

An der Eiche lieber

Meine Schulter,

Uit: Rickshaw Boy (Vertaald door Shi Xiaoqing)

“Where could I go? Only this was still a problem, not to say other things. Put up at a small inn for the night?  Not work. In the middle of the night with all his clothes he would be losing something, not refer to how terrible lice in the inns. Go to a larger hotel? He had only 5 Yuan with him, which was all his property. Bathhouse?  Couldn't stay over after closing at 12 o'clock. He couldn't go anywhere. He found himself coming into Zhong Hai. On the bridge,  open spaces was around and slices of snow throwed into his eyes. He knew the snow had not stopped almost at this moment, but the woven wool hat has been very wet when he touched the head. No people in the bridge, even pliceman couldn't been seen. Several electric lights appeared like blinked restlessly because of the hitting of the snow. Xiang Zi looked at the snow around,  at a loss in his head.

He stood in the bridge for a long time. The world had little noise, like had been dead. Slices of ashen snow was falling fiercely, it was so hurry and quick like got a chance and wanted to covering the whole world without being known.”

(…)

"Carrying his trifling object he'd...drag along, slowly and listlessly. He might as well keep walking when everyone else had stopped. He might as well stand around when everyone else had started off again...he was even more oblivious to whether he was the same distance from those ahead of him as he was from those behind...he went at his own pace wit his head down as if in a dream, and even more, as if pondering some lofty principle."

Uit: The Man From Beijing (Vertaald door Laurie Thompson)

“Frozen snow, severe frost. Midwinter.

Early in January 2006 a lone wolf crosses the unmarked border and enters Sweden from Vauldalen in Norway. A man on a snowmobile thinks he might have glimpsed it just outside Fjällnäs, but the wolf vanishes into the trees heading east before he is able to pinpoint it. In the remote Norwegian Österdalarna Mountains it had discovered a lump of frozen moose carcass, with remnants of meat still clinging to the bones. But that was more than two days ago. It is beginning to feel the pain of hunger and is desperately searching for food.

The wolf is a young male that has set out to find a territory of his own. He continues his way eastward. At Nävjarna, north of Linsell, he finds another moose carcass. For a whole day he stays and eats his fill before resuming his trek east. When he comes to Kårböle he trots over the frozen Ljusnan and then follows the river along its winding route toward the sea. One moonless night he lopes silently over the bridge at Järvsö, then heads into the vast forests that stretch to the coast.

In the early morning of January 13 the wolf reaches Hesjövallen, a tiny village south of Hansesjön Lake in Hälsingland. He pauses and sniffs the air. He detects the smell of blood. He looks around. There are people living in the houses but no smoke rising from the chimneys. His sharp ears can't detect the slightest sound.

But the wolf is in no doubt about the blood. He skulks at the edge of the forest, nose in the air. Then he moves forward, silently, through the snow. The smell comes from one of the houses at the far end of the hamlet. He is vigilant now — with humans around it's essential to be both careful and patient. He pauses again. The smell originates from the back of the house. He waits. Then eventually starts moving once more.”

Uit: Revolutionary Road

The Players, coming out of their various kitchen doors and hesitating for a minute to button their coats or pull on their gloves, would see a landscape in which only a few very old, weathered houses seemed to belong; it made their own homes look as weightless and impermanent, as foolishly misplaced as a great many bright new toys that had been left outdoors overnight and rained on. Their automobiles didn't look right either--unnecessarily wide and gleaming in the colors of candy and ice cream, seeming to wince at each splatter of mud, they crawled apologetically down the broken roads that led from all directions to the deep, level slab of Route Twelve. Once there the cars seemed able to relax in an environment all their own, a long bright valley of colored plastic and plate glass and stainless steel--KING KONE, MOBILGAS, SHOPORAMA, EAT--but eventually they had to turn off, one by one, and make their way up the winding country road that led to the central high school; they had to pull up and stop in the quiet parking lot outside the high-school auditorium.

"Hi!" the Players would shyly call to one another.
"Hi! . . ." "Hi! . . ." And they'd go reluctantly inside.
Clumping their heavy galoshes around the stage, blotting at their noses with Kleenex and frowning at the unsteady print of their scripts, they would disarm each other at last with peals of forgiving laughter, and they would agree, over and over, that there was plenty of time to smooth the thing out.”

Stanzas In Meditation: Stanza I

I caught a bird which made a ball
And they thought better of it.
But it is all of which they taught
That they were in a hurry yet
In a kind of a way they meant it best
That they should change in and on account
But they must not stare when they manage
Whatever they are occasionally liable to do
It is often easy to pursue them once in a while
And in a way there is no repose
They like it as well as they ever did
But it is very often just by the time
That they are able to separate
In which case in effect they could
Not only be very often present perfectly
In each way whichever they chose.
All of this never matters in authority
But this which they need as they are alike
Or in an especial case they will fulfill
Not only what they have at their instigation
Made for it as a decision in its entirety
Made that they minded as well as blinded
Lengthened for them welcome in repose
But which they open as a chance
But made it be perfectly their allowance
All which they antagonise as once for all
Kindly have it joined as they mind

Vorgeben

etwas läuft, in mir, fasst unten an,
zieht das gar ungelenk hinauf,
bekniet gepflanzt nichts mehr,
entwirft sich - in der mitte glanz –

von oben selbst im blick, dreht plan
quer durch, entwischt dem wurf,
verstreut jedoch - im sprung - das ganze,
wirft alles für den, tiefen, fall

- ab, egal ob ball, egal ob ast,
den fuss vertritt, den hand da hat,
hebt, bar - gewicht verlischt –

A song for my loved one, touching her absence

the flux of her heart, the splash of her smile

In ten years time she’ll still be dead. When I’m living with it, dealing with it, when a few days pass when I don’t even think of it, she’ll still be dead. When I’m an old lady living on the street forgetting my name she’ll still be dead, she’ll still be dead, it’s just

fucking

over

and I must stand alone

My love, my love, why have you forsaken me?

She is the couching place where I never shall lie

and there’s no meaning to life in the light of my loss

Built to be lonely

to love the absent

Find me

Free me

from this

corrosive doubt

futile despair

horror in repose

I can fill my space

fill my time

but nothing can fill this void in my heart

Uit: Chesapeake

“His logic was rejected not only by the council of chiefs but also by the common warriors, who felt that for a Susquehannock to pass more than a year in peace would be disgraceful. If their great river had proved an excellent place to live, it must be because their tribe had always fought to protect it, and an old warrior predicted, "Pentaquod, when the day comes that we are afraid to fight, we lose the river."

He persisted in talking against a meaningless war, and since any who spoke for peace in the lands along this river would always be charged with treason, his opponents started the, rumor that he had been contaminated by the enemy and served as their spokesman. It was recalled that his wife had died young, which increased the likelihood that the gods rejected his arguments.

To charge him with cowardice was confusing, for he was one of the tallest Susquehannocks in a generation, and they were a tribe of giants. Towering above young men his age, he looked with steady gaze from his great, broad face, darker in color than normal, sure sign of a warrior. This contradiction perplexed children who listened to the accusations against him, and they began to mimic his diffident walk as he moved alone about the edges of the village; soon they would be taunting him openly.

It was one of these children who drove him to his decision. The little boy had been aping him behind his back, causing much merriment among onlookers, when Pentaquod suddenly turned and seized him, demanding to know why he was behaving so, and the child blurted out, "My father says the council is meeting to punish you" And when Pentaquod looked about the village he realized that the elders were missing, and he knew that the boy was speaking truth.”

Na also!

Alt sein heißt ja nicht schwach sein;
es heißt nur doppelt wach sein
für das, was wahr und echt.

Du lebenslang ein Wächter
des Echten und sein Hegfer,
just dir steht Altsein recht!

A Lesson

My love, would you tell me on the ways of heaven?

The word of the Lord treads lightly upon the water,
seeding by rote into every little figure praying
like ancient voices whispering in a sanctuary.
“Dil-frażi jgħidha Sidna Ġesù Kristu:
Kif int bgħatt lili, hekk jien nibgħat lilkhom”,*
and the chamber becomes an effluvium of
I don’t know how many sentences
etched onto every soul with divine glyphs.

Silence dribbles in droplets between each phrase,
A balm which soothes up the brawl before each lesson;
the father-superior’s shade, his yellowing bible
fade out into the voice of a slight preacher
doling out Blessings to a starving hillside...

Oh spirit, would you tell me on the ways of heaven ?

*”These are the words of our Lord Jesus Christ:
As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”

‘Nou?’
‘Die pijn in mijn rug, h腒
‘Ja, dat zei je.’
‘Is toch kanker.’

(…)

Mooi. Een boterham is goed. Huppekee, denkt Elisabeth, lichte woorden, denken nu, even een boterham, huppekee.”

“Buck Mulligan wiped again his razorblade.

–Ah, poor dogsbody! he said in a kind voice. I must give you a shirt and a few noserags. How are the secondhand breeks?

–They fit well enough, Stephen answered.

Buck Mulligan attacked the hollow beneath his underlip.

–The mockery of it, he said contentedly. Secondleg they should be. God knows what poxy bowsy left them off. I have a lovely pair with a hair stripe, grey. You’ll look spiffing in them. I’m not joking, Kinch. You look damn well when you’re dressed.

–Thanks, Stephen said. I can’t wear them if they are grey.

–He can’t wear them, Buck Mulligan told his face in the mirror. Etiquette is etiquette. He kills his mother but he can’t wear grey trousers.

He folded his razor neatly and with stroking palps of fingers felt the smooth skin.

Stephen turned his gaze from the sea and to the plump face with its smokeblue mobile eyes.

–That fellow I was with in the Ship last night, said Buck Mulligan, says you have g.p.i. He’s up in Dottyville with Connolly Norman. General paralysis of the insane!

He swept the mirror a half circle in the air to flash the tidings abroad in sunlight now radiant on the sea. His curling shaven lips laughed and the edges of his white glittering teeth. Laughter seized all his strong wellknit trunk.

–Look at yourself, he said, you dreadful bard!

Stephen bent forward and peered at the mirror held out to him, cleft by a crooked crack. Hair on end. As he and others see me. Who chose this face for me? This dogsbody to rid of vermin. It asks me too.

–I pinched it out of the skivvy’s room, Buck Mulligan said. It does her all right. The aunt always keeps plainlooking servants for Malachi. Lead him not into temptation. And her name is Ursula.

Laughing again, he brought the mirror away from Stephen’s peering eyes”.

Uit:
The French Gardener

“Gus felt a jolt of excitement. He forgot about biting Adam Hudson in the playground, about running out of the school gates and up the High Street, about his mother's angry voice and his own clawing sense of isolation. He forgot about everything except the sudden rush of blood as he set off in pursuit of the donkey.

"You a scaredy cat?" he hissed as he approached the terrified animal. "Whoooa!" He lunged at him, delighting in the clumsy way the donkey stumbled back before cantering stiffly off towards the woods at the top of the field, braying in panic. What a shame he hadn't brought the stick. It was more fun when he hit him.

Bored of that game, Gus continued into the woods, leaving Charlie trembling in the corner of the field, surrounded by sheep. The ground was soggy, strewn with twigs and brown leaves amongst which a shiny pheasant scraped the earth for food. The sun shone weakly through the leaves, illuminating the spiders' webs that adorned the surrounding shrubbery with lace. Gus picked up a twig and began to swipe the webs, squashing the fleeing spiders under foot. The pleasure was fleeting, and he was left with the emptiness of believing, albeit subconsciously, that he was of no value to anyone.

Miranda Claybourne put down the telephone and remained at the window, staring out over the orchard. The ground was littered with apples and the last of the plums. She had sensed her son's presence at the door, but now he had gone. Of all the days Gus had to choose to play truant, he had chosen Deadline Day. She stubbed out her cigarette, reassuring herself that a lapse in her struggle to quit was absolutely okay; three puffs hardly counted. She didn't have time to go looking for him, and anyway, she wouldn't know where to start, the grounds were so large and, she observed with a sinking feeling, desperately overgrown and wet.”

Creation Made Like Hope

Ethereal and supreme
Of tersest heaven it
has pronounced a daily storm
While hours have been supreme, it has
had hours in its
glee
A purple name
has covered the fans of sovereign
things about its
existence
Has raised and has rased, but
there has been no death
in these mornings

Has experienced and has perched
Has put up with it and has disinvested
Has raised and has razed
Has pondered and has asked
Has said and has raised

Lovesick Even

This cold day the sun goes to bed early.
I miss you, dear, I miss you so.
Nothing sadder than a still eve
When gloam mixes with the last rays.
The dragging wind glides o'er the tangled grass
Amid snippets of night darkly hiding among the limbs.
The clouds follow their birds to green mountains
In flocks and rows silent in unison
While gray skies nigh dissolve into moist tears.

It's over now! What's left, my dear?
It's over now! no wind through loft nor moon on porch
With dewy leaves falling on our heads bound.
No more jealousy or anger or spite
(What a bliss to be mad at each other!)
Now 'lone, I hear the whole even
Seeping slowly into my lonely soul.

I miss your voice, your figure, your image.
I miss you, dear, oh how I miss you, dear!
And I recall those days so far away.
I miss your lips that smiled in country far
And eyes on me that filled with passion deep.
My dear, come close! Give me your hand!
O wind, thy gusts that brought me memories!
O memories, what good thou call'st me for?

Uit: Atlas Shrugged

“You have destroyed all that which you held to be evil and achieved all that which you held to be good. Why, then, do you shrink in horror from the sight of the world around you? That world is not the product of your sins; it is the product and the image of your virtues. It is your moral ideal brought into reality in its full and final perfection.

You have fought for it, you have dreamed of it, and you have wished it, and I-I am the man who has granted you your wish.

Your ideal had an implacable enemy, which your code of morality was designed to destroy. I have withdrawn that enemy. I have taken it out of your way and out of your reach. I have removed the source of all those evils you were sacrificing one by one. I have ended your battle. I have stopped your motor. I have deprived your world of man's mind.

Men do not live by the mind, you say? I have withdrawn those who do. The mind is impotent, you say? I have withdrawn those whose mind isn't. There are values higher than the mind, you say? I have withdrawn those for whom there aren't.

While you were dragging to your sacrificial altars the men of justice, of independence, of reason, of wealth, of self-esteem -- I beat you to it, I reached them first. I told them the nature of the game you were playing and the nature of that moral code of yours, which they had been too innocently generous to grasp. I showed them the way to live by another morality-mine. It is mine that they chose to follow.”

Always I Know You Anew

I press my hands on my eyes
And will that you come to me.
Your semblances shimmer and rise;
Yet 'tis never your self I see,
Never the exquisite grace
And the bright, still flame of you.
So, when I meet you face to face,
Always I know you anew!

Faint visions I saw, instead
Of your brows direct and wise,
Of the little lilt of your head
And your dark-lashed, sky-clear eyes,
Of the soft brown braids demure,
The poise as of quiet light,
The perfect profile, sweet and pure,--
Never I dream you aright!

And new in endless ways,
By your blessed heart unplanned,
It is mine to surprise each sweeter phase,
Adore you, and understand;
For through every delicious change in you
Truth burns with a clear still flame;
And, though always I know you anew,
Always I find you the same!

Uit: The Ship On The Mountain (Vertaald door Shant Norashkharian)

"The spirit is the essential thing. Every individual must remain connected with the center of his spirit. Events are around us, not within us. They come, roar, leave and, finally are subdued by that same spirit, if it is great and radiant. We, Armenians, have known this for centuries..."

"These fugitives make a very interesting scene", Haig Shoushan started again, after a brief pause. " I have been watching them since they arrived here. This mob is not merely composed of artists and poets. There are all kinds of elements among them...When they arrived, they looked pitiful. Pathetic, thin, malnourished...But they did not waste any time. Many of them, personalities with examining eyes and stubborn foreheads, immediately analyzed the situation, they smelled the environment and put themselves to work. Numerous shops were opened. They were selling and buying everything. They were exchanging money and collecting gold, silver and precious gems. Before long, many ladies came forward. Baronesses, duchesses, princesses with resonant, noble names. With vain looks and lovely smiles. They then started sponsoring artists and writers..."

"According to the tradition..."

"Yes! Under that pretense they opened nightclubs, where they received you with the noblest ways, formal greetings, compromising smiles, and where, you met famous names, about whom you had once read in the papers of Petersburg or Moscow." They were offering you the unavoidable cup of tea. One of the ladies sang with half a voice. Pastries and cakes were served. They discussed and argued about art.”

Abendfriede

Schwebe, Mond, im tiefen Blau

Ueber Berg und Höhn,

Sprudle Wasser, blinke Thau!

Nacht, wie bist du schön!

Spiegle See den reinen Strahl!

Friedeathmend lind

Durch das wiesenhelle Thal

Walle, weicher Wind!

Wie durch einen Zauberschlag

Bin ich umgestimmt

Von Gedanken, die der Tag

Bringt und wieder nimmt.

Daß es auch ein Sterben gibt,

Fühl ich ohne Schmerz,

Was ich liebe, was mich liebt,

Geht mir still durchs Herz.

Anderer Last unsre Lust

Es hat mir noch an keiner Lust gefehlt;

denn Welt und Himmel ist mein eigen;

mir täglich neue Lust zu zeugen;

Pflegt man zusagen;
