Am Ostersonntage (Annette von Droste-Hülshoff)

Am Ostersonntage

O, jauchze, Welt, du hast ihn wieder,

Sein Himmel hielt ihn nicht zurück!

O jauchzet! jauchzet! singet Lieder!

Was dunkelst du, mein sel'ger Blick?

Die Freude steht wie Kummer da;

Wer kann so großer Lust sich einen,

Der all so große Trauer sah!

Mein Gott, was konnte dich bewegen

Was einmal unergründlich ist;

Der Stein des Falles harrt des Blinden,

Wenn er die Wege Gottes misst.

Mein Jesus hat sie wert befunden

In Liebe und Gerechtigkeit;

Was will ich ferner noch erkunden?

Sein Wille bleibt in Ewigkeit!

So darf ich glauben und vertrauen

Auf meiner Seele Herrlichkeit!

So darf ich auf zum Himmel schauen,

In meines Gottes Ähnlichkeit!

Hier

Mijn stappen in deze straat
Weerklinken
in een andere straat
waar
ik mijn stappen hoor
passeren in deze straat
waar
Slechts de mist werkelijk is

Twee lichamen

Twee lichamen tegenover elkaar
Zijn soms twee golven
En de nacht is de oceaan

Twee lichamen tegenover elkaar
Zijn soms twee stenen
En de nacht een woestenij

Twee lichamen tegenover elkaar
Zijn soms wortels
In de nacht vastgebonden

Twee lichamen tegenover elkaar
Zijn soms zakmessen
En de nacht een bliksemflits

Twee lichamen tegenover elkaar
Zijn twee hemellichamen die vallen
In een lege hemel.

On Horseback at Dawn

Silence strikes the tree trunks, upon itself retracing,
turns to distance, turns to sand.
I have turned my only face toward the sun,
my shoulders scatter leaves in this racing.
Cutting through the field - up on two shoes
my horse leaps, steaming, from the clay.
Ave, I am turning to you, I, Ave!
The sun has burst across the heavens, crying.

Stone drums are sounding, the sun grows,
the vault of heaven, alive with eagles, before him,
collapses into steps of air, and glows.
Silence turns to blue wind,
the spur of my shadow grows
in the ribs of the field.

The sun snaps the horizon in two.
The vault of heaven pulls down its dying prison cells.
Blue spears, with no returning,
I discard my visions, both of them -
they meet him, sweet and grave.
My horse rises on two shoes.
Ave, tide of light, ave!

The sun ascends from objects, crying,
shakes the borders, voiceless and grave.
My soul meets Him, Ave!
My horse rises on two shoes.
My pale mane burns on the wind.

Uit: Bartleby & Co. (Vertaald door Jonathan Dunne)

“I wonder if I can do this. I am convinced that only by tracking down the labyrinth of the No can the paths still open to the writing of the future appear. I wonder if I can evoke them. I shall write footnotes commenting on a text that is invisible, which does not mean it does not exist, since this phantom text could very well end up held in suspension in the literature of the next millennium.

1) Robert Walser knew that writing that one cannot write is also writing. Among the many minor positions that he held - bookshop assistant, lawyer's clerk, bank employee, worker in a factory that made sewing machines, and finally major-domo of a castle in Silesia - Robert Walser would from time to time retire to Zurich, to the "Chamber of Writing for Unoccupied Persons" (the name could not be more Walserian, but it is genuine), and there, seated on an old stool, in the evening, in the pale light of an oil lamp, he would make use of his graceful handwriting to work as a copyist, to work as a "Bartleby".

Both his occupation as a copyist and Walser's whole existence remind us of the character in Melville's story, the scrivener who spent twenty-four hours a day in the office. Roberto Calasso, referring to Walser and Bartleby, has remarked that in such beings who have the appearance of ordinary and discreet men there is, however, to be found an alarming tendency to negate the world. All the more radical the less it is observed, the blast of destruction is frequently ignored by people who consider the Bartlebys to be grey, good-natured beings. "For many, Walser, the author of Jakob von Gunten," writes Calasso, "is still a familiar figure and it is possible to read even that his nihilism is middle class and good-natured like the Swiss. And yet he is a remote character, a parallel path of nature, an almost indiscernible knife-edge. Walser's obedience, like Bartleby's disobedience, presupposes a total break [...]. They copy, they transcribe texts that pass through them like a transparent sheet. They make no special pronouncements, no attempt to modify. 'I do not develop,' says Jakob von Gunten in Jakob von Gunten. 'I would prefer not to make any change,' says Bartleby. Their affinity reveals the similarity between silence and a certain decorative use of language."

Implications of One Plus One

Sometimes we collide, tectonic plates merging,
continents shoving, crumpling down into the molten
veins of fire deep in the earth and raising
tons of rock into jagged crests of Sierra.

Sometimes your hands drift on me, milkweed's
airy silk, wingtip's feathery caresses,
our lips grazing, a drift of desires gathering
like fog over warm water, thickening to rain.

Sometimes we go to it heartily, digging,
burrowing, grunting, tossing up covers
like loose earth, nosing into the other's
flesh with hot nozzles and wallowing there.

Sometimes we are kids making out, silly
in the quilt, tickling the xylophone spine,
blowing wet jokes, loud as a whole
slumber party bouncing till the bed breaks.

I go round and round you sometimes, scouting,
blundering, seeking a way in, the high boxwood
maze I penetrate running lungs bursting
toward the fountain of green fire at the heart.

Sometimes you open wide as cathedral doors
and yank me inside. Sometimes you slither
into me like a snake into its burrow.
Sometimes you march in with a brass band.

Ten years of fitting our bodies together
and still they sing wild songs in new keys.
It is more and less than love: timing,
chemistry, magic and will and luck.

One plus one equal one, unknowable except
in the moment, not convertible into words,
not explicable or philosophically interesting.
But it is. And it is. And it is. Amen.

Echo

Das Rauschen der Muschel

– ein Geschenk von dir –

Ist mir im Ohr, geheimnisvoll

Ich schließe die Augen

Das kalkstarre Kleinod in der Hand

Ein Mini-Meer

Ersehne sein Tosen, sein Bild, den Geruch

Versinke im Ozean wirbelnder Fülle

Und Stille

Unterwasserwelt

Im tiefsten Abgrund

Bist du

Mit offenen Armen

Eine Träne verloren

Im Ozean

Ängste rufen mich zurück

Flieh!

Zerrissen

Gehe ich an Land

Hinter mir: Wellen, Wellen, Wellen

“My mother would have been twenty-seven, Wilkie about ten years older,  this huge, soft-voiced teddy bear with wavy brown hair and bushy brows,  his eyes set so deep under them that they looked trapped. He got by  because he'd had an inheritance of maybe forty thousand dollars and,  bumming around the West, he'd landed in Santa Fe several years before the  real-estate boom. His then artist-girlfriend persuaded him to buy a  crumbling adobe house on a large lot on Canyon Road. Outright. She left  before long, but there were always other artists (artist mostly in  quotes) ready to move in with him. The males and maybe some of the  females paid rent. He had good offers for the whole piece of real estate  but he turned them down. He couldn't imagine where he'd go afterward.  Wilkie was one of the few people I've ever known who didn't need to  do anything, even when he was sober. He could sit at home or in  the coffee shop for hours without even looking at the newspaper, waiting  for people to come by and talk. Or not talk. Just drink coffee at his  regular table. Sober, my mother could do that for five or ten minutes.  Even drunk, she didn't stay still for long. Anyway, I wasn't so much  aware of the difference between drunk and sober, in those days. And she  wasn't drunk so much of the time.
They struck up a conversation in the Pink Adobe, called by regulars the  Pink. His girlfriend had just left. A couple of hours later, we moved  into his room. No mystery about how my mother got pregnant; the marvel is  that it didn't happen more often. She loved babies. She loved anything  that didn't talk back.”

Kaapren varen: De derde kaper

blijft heel de rest van Tjores’ ruige leven;

The Character Of Holland (Fragment)

Yet still his claim the Injur'd Ocean laid,
And oft at Leap-frog ore their Steeples plaid:
As if on purpose it on Land had come
To shew them what's their Mare Liberum.
A daily deluge over them does boyl;
The Earth and Water play at Level-coyl;
The Fish oft-times the Burger dispossest,
And sat not as a Meat but as a Guest;
And oft the Tritons and the Sea-Nymphs saw
Whole sholes of Dutch serv'd up for Cabillan;
Or as they over the new Level rang'd
For pickled Herring, pickled Heeren chang'd.
Nature, it seem'd, asham'd of her mistake,
Would throw their land away at Duck and Drake.
Therefore Necessity, that first made Kings,
Something like Government among them brings.
For as with Pygmees who best kills the Crane,
Among the hungry he that treasures Grain,
Among the blind the one-ey'd blinkard reigns,
So rules among the drowned he that draines.
Not who first see the rising Sun commands,
But who could first discern the rising Lands.
Who best could know to pump an Earth so leak
Him they their Lord and Country's Father speak.
To make a Bank was a great Plot of State;

Invent a Shov'l and be a Magistrate.
Hence some small Dyke-grave unperceiv'd invades
The Pow'r, and grows as 'twere a King of Spades.
But for less envy some Joynt States endures,
Who look like a Commission of the Sewers.
For these Half-anders, half wet, and half dry,
Nor bear strict service, nor pure Liberty.

Uit: The Journals

“5 November 1949
Guy Fawkes night. A great crowd of people, vaguely contented at shaking off the discipline of the world as it is. The undergraduates form the largest part, for the most part just watching, with a few active spirits shouting, calling, singing, making speeches. A certain air of forcedness about all these crowds. Fireworks shooting up, and people exploding away from them when they land. The police and the proctors standing ineffectively. Buses moving slowly, cars being rocked and thumped. Many climb up the scaffolding around the Martyr's Memorial,1 then a vague move is made to the Taj Mahal restaurant where there is a man climbing up, men shouting, and a solid mass of people. Water out of the windows.
Basically one cannot help feeling contempt for all this canaille, noisily and offensively drunk yet not doing anything positive. Most of them posturing in a ridiculous manner. A good many girls, who seem the most genuinely excited.
To a certain extent there is a vast good will that can be sensed; roughly everyone is together and enjoying themselves, with the police and the proctors symbolizing all kinds of emotion and, ultimately, the determinism in life. GH and BB both enjoy themselves, and look for some means to manifest their lawlessness. I have absolutely no desire to do anything else but watch, wanting to be everywhere and see everything, observing people's faces. Roger Hendry2 is like me but not so finely 'set', for he has to pretend to a certain lawlessness which isn't innate in him at all.
Too many of the faces are vacuous and want filling.
The sight of the girl in green, about whom I wrote the Hospital story, with a thick well set-up young man, is distressing. Above all the sight of the moon, nearly full, in a clear night sky, not particularly cold, after a dull, rainy day. I wanted very much to see one of the people who climbed the Memorial fall down to his death. The indrawn breath and sudden laugh would have been most effective”.

And, as the Cock crew, those who stood before
The Tavern shouted--"Open then the Door!
You know how little while we have to stay,
And, once departed, may return no more."

The thoughtful Soul to Solitude retires,
Where the WHITE HAND OF MOSES on the Bough
Puts out, and Jesus from the Ground suspires.

Spring

Now the bright crocus flames, and now
The slim narcissus takes the rain,
And, straying o'er the mountain's brow,
The daffodilies bud again.
The thousand blossoms wax and wane
On wold, and heath, and fragrant bough,
But fairer than the flowers art thou,
Than any growth of hill or plain.

Ye gardens, cast your leafy crown,
That my Love's feet may tread it down,
Like lilies on the lilies set:
My Love, whose lips are softer far
Than drowsy poppy petals are,
And sweeter than the violet!

In Ithaca

'Tis thought Odysseus when the strife was o'er
With all the waves and wars, a weary while,
Grew restless in his disenchanted isle,
And still would watch the sunset, from the shore,
Go down the ways of gold, and evermore
His sad heart followed after, mile on mile,
Back to the Goddess of the magic wile,
Calypso, and the love that was of yore.

Thou too, thy haven gained, must turn thee yet
To look across the sad and stormy space,
Years of a youth as bitter as the sea,
Ah, with a heavy heart, and eyelids wet,
Because, within a fair forsaken place
The life that might have been is lost to thee.

PSAUME I

O Herr, erhalt' uns!

Meereswogen brechen,

Sie toben sonder Schall;

Nur die Menschenkinder sprechen,

Doch schaurig schweigt der Widerhall.

Wie versteinet steht

Der Äther um uns her;

Dringt wohl kein Gebet

Durch ihn zum Himmel mehr.

O Herr, erhalt'uns!

Sünden sind geschehen,

Für jedes Wort zu groß,

Daß die Erde müßt' vergehen,

Trüg' sie nicht Jesu Leib im Schoß.

Noch im Tod voll Huld

Erhält sein Leib die Welt,

Daß in ihrer Schuld

Sie nicht zu Staub zerfällt.

O Herr, verschon' uns!

Jesus liegt im Grabe,

Im Grabe liegt mein Gott!

Was ich von Gedanken habe,

Ist doch dagegen nur ein Spott.

Kennt in Ewigkeit

Kein Jesus mehr die Welt?

Keiner der verzeiht,

Und keiner der erhält?

O Herr, errett' uns!

Ach, auf jene Frommen,

Die seines Heils geharrt,

Ist die Glorie gekommen

Mit seiner süßen Gegenwart.

Harrten seiner Huld:

Vergangenheit die Zeit,

Gegenwart Geduld,

Zukunft die Ewigkeit.

O Herr, erlös' uns!

Lange, lange Zeiten

In Glauben und Vertraun,

Durch die unbekannten Weiten

Nach unbekanntem Heil sie schaun.

Dachten sich so viel,

Viel Seligkeit und Pracht.

Ach, es war wie Spiel,

Von Kindern ausgedacht.

O Herr, befrei' uns!

Herr, ich kann nicht sprechen

Vor deinem Angesicht!

Laß die ganze Schöpfung brechen,

Diesen Tag erträgt sie nicht.

Ach, was naht so schwer,

Ist es die ew'ge Nacht,

Ist's ein Sonnenmeer,

In tausend Strahlen Pracht?

O Herr, erhalt' uns!

Komt in verrukking overeind, verschiet

Harmonie

Asperges me

Marine

L'Océan sonore
Palpite sous l'oeil
De la lune en deuil
Et palpite encore,

Tandis qu'un éclair
Brutal et sinistre
Fend le ciel de bistre
D'un long zigzag clair,

Et que chaque lame,
En bonds convulsifs,
Le long des récifs
Va, vient, luit et clame,

Et qu'au firmament,
Où l'ouragan erre,
Rugit le tonnerre
Formidablement

The natural History Of Elephants (Fragment)

In the elephant's five-pound brain
Sun and moon are the pieces in a delightfully complex ballgame
That have to do with him...never does he doubt
The sky has opened and rain and thunder descend
For his special ministration. He dreams of mastodons
And mammoths and still his pride beats
Like the heart of the world, he knows he could reach
To the end of space if he stood still and imagined the effort.

In the elephant's five-pound brain
Poems are composed as a silent substitute for laughter,
His thoughts while resting in the shade
Are long and solemn as novels and he knows his companions
By names differing for each quality of morning.
Noon and evening are ruminated on and each overlaid
With the taste of night. He loves his horny perambulating hide
As other tribes love their houses, and remembers
He's left flakes of skin and his smell
As a sign and permanent stamp on wherever he has been.

In the elephant's five-pound brain
The entire Oxford dictionary'ld be too small
To contain all the concepts which after all are too weighty
Each individually ever to be mentioned;
Thus of course the beast has no language
Only an eternal pondering hesitation.

Der Fischer

Der Fischer,

der auf dem felsigen Eiland steht

und zu den Hügeln hinüberblickt,

atmet Unendlichkeit.

Zu seiner Linken:

Unendlichkeit.

Aber gewahrt er sie?

Er hält seine Angel.

Er wartet.

Der Wind

läßt weiße Kämme

schäumen

auf blauer Flut.

Reglos hält er die Angel.

Er wartet.

Lehre mich warten, o Herr,

am Ufer deiner Unendlichkeit,

die ich nicht begreife.

Einzelhaft

“While women had come to Porterhouse their numbers were negligible. And since the Senior Tutor was in charge of admissions as well as the Boat Club, those women who were admitted had certain characteristics that distinguished them from the girls in other colleges. Even the Chaplain, always a broad-minded man, had complained.

‘I know the world is a very different place these days and I try to keep up with the times’, he had said over the kidney ragout at dinner one night, ‘but I draw the line at young men wearing lipstick in public places. There is some man on my staircase who is distinctly odd. I found a tube of lipstick in the lavatory this morning and whatever aftershave lotion he uses is most disturbing’.

‘I don’t suppose there is any point in explaining’, said the Praelector, keeping his voice down. The Chaplain was deaf, but it was as well to take precautions.

‘Definitely not’, said the Dean. ‘if he ever found out their real sex, Heaven alone knows what he might get up to’.

‘I suppose we must be grateful he’s not interested in boys. A lot of the dons in other colleges are, I’m told’.

‘It’s amazing he can get up to anything at all at his age’, said the Senior Tutor a trifle mournfully. ‘Still, it was obviously a great mistake to put any women on his staircase’. They looked accusingly at the Bursar who was in charge of room allocations.”

Ohne Arg und ohne Trug;

Wie er ließ die Kindlein kommen,
Wie er hold auf sie geblickt
Und sie in den Arm genommen,
Und an seine Brust gedrückt;

Wie er Hülfe und Erbarmen
Allen Kranken gern erwies,
Und die Blöden und die Armen
Seine lieben Brüder hieß;

Wie er keinem Sünder wehrte,
Der mit Reue zu ihm kam,
Wie er freundlich ihn belehrte,
Ihm den Tod vom Herzen nahm.

Immer muß ich wieder lesen,
Les' und weine mich nicht satt,
Wie der Herr so treu gewesen,
Wie er uns geliebet hat.

Hat die Herde mild geleitet,
Die sein Vater ihm verlieh'n;
Hat die Arme ausgebreitet,
Alle an sein Herz zu ziehn.

Laß mich knie'n zu deinen Füßen,
Herr, die Liebe bricht mein Herz;
Laß in Thränen mich zerfließen,
Untergehn in Wonn' und Schmerz.

Uit: Black Beauty

"What hare?" I said.

"Oh! I don't know what hare; likely enough it may be one of our own hares out of the woods; any hare they can find will do for the dogs and men to run after;" and before long the dogs began their "yo! yo, o, o!" again, and back they came altogether at full speed, making straight for our meadow at the part where the high bank and hedge overhang the brook.

"Now we shall see the hare," said my mother; and just then a hare wild with fright rushed by and made for the woods. On came the dogs; they burst over the bank, leaped the stream, and came dashing across the field followed by the huntsmen. Six or eight men leaped their horses clean over, close upon the dogs. The hare tried to get through the fence; it was too thick, and she turned sharp round to make for the road, but it was too late; the dogs were upon her with their wild cries; we heard one shriek, and that was the end of her. One of the huntsmen rode up and whipped off the dogs, who would soon have torn her to pieces. He held her up by the leg torn and bleeding, and all the gentlemen seemed well pleased.

As for me, I was so astonished that I did not at first see what was going on by the brook; but when I did look there was a sad sight; two fine horses were down, one was struggling in the stream, and the other was groaning on the grass. One of the riders was getting out of the water covered with mud, the other lay quite still.

"His neck is broke," said my mother.

"And serve him right, too," said one of the colts.

I thought the same, but my mother did not join with us.”

Ferien auf den Stromschnellen
Des Colorado River?
Klettern im Himalaja?
Krokodile reiten auf Palau
Und Fallschirmspringen in Ashford?
Oder garantierte Einsamkeit
In den Mc-Kenzie-Bergen?

Wozu der Aufwand?
Bleiben Sie zuhause
Und schwimmen Sie gegen den Strom.
Sie werden staunen.

Der Dschungel beginnt doch vor der Haustür.
Was sind die Papuas
Gegen den Exotismus Ihrer Nachbarn.
In Nepal können Sie nicht tiefer stürzen,
Am Pol nicht ärger frieren,
In der Sahara nicht verlassener sein
Als dort, wo Sie wohnen.
Unter Ihren Landsleuten
Erleben Sie das blaue Wunder
Am Kaffeetisch.

Warum in die Ferne schweifen?
Ruhm ist in der kleinsten Hütte.
Dem Mutigsten winkt
Ein Gelber Stern.

“Johnny: Is mother back from the doctor yet, with Mary?

Mrs Boyle enters; it is apparent from the serious look on her face that something has happened. She takes off her hat and coat without a word and puts them by. She then sits down near the fire, and there is a few moments’ pause.

Boyle: Well, what did the doctor say about Mary?

Mrs Boyle: (in an earnest manner and with suppressed agitation)

Sit down here Jack, I’ve something to say to you .. . about Mary.

Boyle:(awed by her manner) About ... Mary?

Mrs Boyle: Close that door there and sit down here.

Boyle:(closing the door) More trouble in our native land is it?

(He sits down.) Well, what is it?

Mrs Boyle: It’s about Mary.

Boyle:  Well, what about Mary – there’s nothing wrong with her, is there?

Mrs Boyle:  I’m sorry to say there’s a gradle wrong with her.

Boyle:  A gradle wrong with her! (Peevishly) First Johnny an’ now Mary; is the whole house goin’ to become a hospital! It’s not consumption, is it?

Mrs Boyle:  No.... it’s not consumption ... it’s worse.

Johnny:  Worse! Well, we’ll have to get her into some place ower this, there’s no one to mind her here.

Mrs Boyle:  We’ll all have to mind her now. You might as well know now, Johnny, as another time.”

Uit: The Rooms Of Memory (Vertaald door Isabel Cole)

“I saw this only once, one single time that rain-heavy summer I spent in the Berlin apartment, and though it was nothing out of the ordinary, and surely nothing supernatural, it seized me like an apparition. In the paling evening sky over the trees of the park, in the gray pink broken only by a withered acacia’s rearing crown, birds wheeled. It was not a flock gathering for the autumn migration; the birds darted in all directions across the piece of sky, myriad solitary dark arcs. Are those swallows? I wondered, leaning my forehead against the pane, but even in the rose-gold glow it was too dark to make out the birds. Only their high wheeling flight was still visible and – perhaps because of the appalling silence all around – palpable.

It was a restless rising and sinking, black on vanishing bright, soundless. I watched it, I followed the teeming random motion, it drew me, I circled with it, leaning my face against the pane. That is me. I thought and did not think it; I thought next to nothing, only rose and fell, wheeling, mute, with a glassy sense of absence.

The last time: I did not really think this either, I saw it in the sky. I used to think it sometimes, at partings, on trips; it had been a dramatic, even melodramatic thought. Now everything was simply as it was.”
