Immortelle IX

Niet, dat hij echt een liefje heeft;

Hij stelt het zich maar voor.

Dat doen minnedichters meer;

High waving heather 'neath stormy blasts bending

High waving heather 'neath stormy blasts bending,
Midnight and moonlight and bright shining stars,
Darkness and glory rejoicingly blending,
Earth rising to heaven and heaven descending,
Man's spirit away from its drear dungeon sending,
Bursting the fetters and breaking the bars.

All down the mountain sides wild forests lending
One mighty voice to the life-giving wind,
Rivers their banks in their jubilee rending,
Fast through the valleys a reckless course wending,
Wider and deeper their waters extending,
Leaving a desolate desert behind.

Shining and lowering and swelling and dying,
Changing forever from midnight to noon;
Roaring like thunder, like soft music sighing,
Shadows on shadows advancing and flying,
Lighning-bright flashes the deep gloom defying,
Coming as swiftly and fading as soon.

A Little Budding Rose

It was a little budding rose,
Round like a fairy globe,
And shyly did its leaves unclose
Hid in their mossy robe,
But sweet was the slight and spicy smell
It breathed from its heart invisible.

The rose is blasted, withered, blighted,
Its root has felt a worm,
And like a heart beloved and slighted,
Failed, faded, shrunk its form.
Bud of beauty, bonnie flower,
I stole thee from thy natal bower.

I was the worm that withered thee,
Thy tears of dew all fell for me;
Leaf and stalk and rose are gone,
Exile earth they died upon.
Yes, that last breath of balmy scent
With alien breezes sadly blent!

'Fall, leaves, fall'

Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.

I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night's decay
Ushers in a drearier day.

Chanson d'automne

Les sanglots longs

Des violons

De l'automne

Blessent mon coeur

D'une langueur

Monotone.

Tout suffocant

Et blême, quand

Sonne l'heure,

Je me souviens

Des jours anciens

Et je pleure;

Et je m'en vais

Au vent mauvais

Qui m'emporte

Deçà, delà

Pareil à la

Feuille morte.

Uit: Keuring

Aan I.

“FROM UP HERE, a half mile above the Earth, everything looks perfect to me.

I am in my nifty little Skyhawk, banking her back into the sun, having nearly completed my usual fair-weather loop. Below is the eastern end of Long Island, and I'm flying just now over that part of the land where the two gnarly forks shoot out into the Atlantic. The town directly ahead, which is nothing special when you're on foot, looks pretty magnificent now, the late-summer sun casting upon the macadam of the streets a soft, ebonized sheen, its orangey light reflecting back at me, matching my direction and speed in the windows and bumpers of the parked cars and swimming pools of the simple, square houses set snugly in rows. There is a mysterious, runelike cipher to the newer, larger homes wagoning in their cul-de-sac hoops, and then, too, in the flat roofs of the shopping mall buildings, with their shiny metal circuitry of HVAC housings and tubes.

From up here, all the trees seem ideally formed and arranged, as if fretted over by a persnickety florist god, even the ones (no doubt volunteers) clumped along the fencing of the big scrap metal lot, their spindly, leggy uprush not just a pleasing garnish to the variegated piles of old hubcaps and washing machines, but then, for a stock guy like me, mere heartbeats shy of sixty (hard to even say that), the life signs of a positively priapic yearning. Just to the south, on the baseball diamond-our people's pattern supreme-the local Little League game is entering the late innings, the baby-blue-shirted players positioned straightaway and shallow, in the bleachers their parents only appearing to sit church-quiet and still, the sole perceivable movement a bounding golden-haired dog tracking down a Frisbee in deep, deep centerfield.

Go, boy, go.”

Uit: Casino (Vertaald door Susan Ridder)

“Until the day he met Philip van Heemskerk, nothing in Rink de Vilder’s life gave any intimation of his personal qualities.

The summary of his life until that moment cannot, therefore, be brief enough. He was born at sunrise on 17 October 1962 in The Hague, a city affected by the dullness and stuffiness, a court city in decline. His parents called him Richard, a name whose two Germanic components mean ‘rich’ and ‘courageous’ respectively. Soon, however, this was shortened to Rink, which meant hardly anything. Rink turned out to be a lively little boy with a tendency to bump and break. He fell off the dressing table three times before he learned to walk. After his first half hour in the inevitable playpen, he had broken two of its bars and sailed through the open balcony doors into the garden with them. In the sandpit at the nursery, he whacked other boys’ heads with toy spades. He progressed from there to breaking windows, demolishing bicycles and firing his catapult at the tram’s pantograph until, during his first year at the Haganum Gymnasium, he managed to decapitate an apocalyptic hybrid of Hercules and Paris with an accurate kick of a ball from the courtyard into the  hall. The statue’s head was smashed and his father had to pay for a new, even weirder face for it.

After that he left the material arrangement of man and the world alone and set about acquiring an education. He wrote papers in nine subjects, not eight, got a rounded-up sixty percent in all but one (fifty percent), worked six months as a courier for Euro Parcels, and travelled through Australia until he ran out of money. Then he registered to study Sociology at the University of Amsterdam.”

Uit:The Oxford Murders (Vertaald door Sonia Soto)

“Now that the years have passed and everything's been forgotten, and now that I've received a terse e-mail from Scotland with the sad news of Seldom's death, I feel I can break my silence (which he never asked for anyway) and tell the truth about events that reached the British papers in the summer of '93 with macabre and sensationalist headlines, but to which Seldom and I always referred -- perhaps due to the mathematical connotation -- simply as the series, or the Oxford Series. Indeed, the deaths all occurred in Oxfordshire, at the beginning of my stay in England, and I had the dubious
privilege of seeing the first at close range.
I was twenty-two, an age at which almost anything can still be excused. I'd just graduated from the University of Buenos Aires with a thesis in algebraic topology and was travelling to Oxford on a year's scholarship, secretly intending to move over to logic, or at least attend the famous seminars run by Angus MacIntyre. My supervisor, Dr Emily Bronson, had made all the preparations for my arrival with meticulous care. She was a professor and fellow of St Anne's, but in the e-mails we exchanged before my trip she suggested that, instead of staying in the rather uncomfortable college accommodation, I might prefer -- grant money allowing -- to rent a room with its own bathroom, kitchen and entrance in the house of a Mrs. Eagleton, a delightful and discreet lady, she said, the widow of her former professor. I did my sums, as always a little optimistically, and sent off a \cheque for advance payment of the first month's rent, the landlady's only \requirement.
A fortnight later I was flying over the Atlantic in the incredulous state which overcomes me when I travel: it always seems much more likely, and more economical as a hypothesis -- Ockham's Razor, Seldom would have said -- that a last-minute accident will send me back to where I started, or to the bottom of the sea, than that an entire country and the immense machinery involved in starting a new life will appear eventually like an outstretched hand down below.“
