Uit: Night Train

“I am a police. That may sound like an unusual statement--or an unusual construction. But it's a parlance we have. Among ourselves, we would never say I am a policeman or I am a policewoman or I am a police officer. We would just say I am a police. I am a police. I am a police and my name is Detective Mike Hoolihan. And I am a woman, also.

What I am setting out here is an account of the worst case I have ever handled. The worst case--for me, that is. When you're a police, "worst" is an elastic concept. You can't really get a fix on "worst." The boundaries are pushed out every other day. "Worst?" we'll ask. "There's no such thing as worst." But for Detective Mike Hoolihan this was the worst case.

Downtown, at CID, with its three thousand sworn, there are many departments and subdepartments, sections and units, whose names are always changing: Organized Crime, Major Crimes, Crimes Against Persons, Sex Offenses, Auto Theft, Check and Fraud, Special Investigations, Asset Forfeiture, Intelligence, Narcotics, Kidnapping, Burglary, Robbery--and Homicide. There is a glass door marked Vice. There is no glass door marked Sin. The city is the offense. We are the defense. That's the general idea.

Here is my personal "ten-card." At the age of eighteen I enrolled for a master's in Criminal Justice at Pete Brown. But what I really wanted was the streets. And I couldn't wait. I took tests for state trooper, for border patrol, and even for state corrections officer. I passed them all. I also took the police test, and I passed that, too. I quit Pete and enrolled at the Academy.”

Littlefoot, 19, [This is the bird hour]

This is the bird hour, peony blossoms falling bigger than wren hearts

On the cutting border's railroad ties,

Sparrows and other feathery things

Homing from one hedge to the next,

                                                             late May, gnat-floating evening.

Is love stronger than unlove?

                                                              Only the unloved know.

And the mockingbird, whose heart is cloned and colorless.

And who's this tiny chirper,

lost in the loose leaves of the weeping cherry tree?

His song is not more than three feet off the ground, and singular,

And going nowhere.

Listen. It sounds a lot like you, hermane.

                                                                    It sounds like me. -

Still Life On A Matchbox Lid

The heart is colder then the eye is.
The watchers, the holy ones,
know this, no shortcut to the sky,
A single dog hair can split the wind.

If you want great tranquility,
it's hard work and a long walk.

Don't brood on the past.
The world is without appendages,
no message, no name.

selten Musik. Es wird immer wieder dasselbe Lied gespielt, Gloria Gaynors »I Will Survive«.

karpeles

Hier. Hier rein. Hier ... Jetzt komm schon.

anna

Ich weiß nicht.

karpeles

Kurz. Fünf Minuten. Was sind fünf Minuten? Was kann ich dir schon tun in fünf Minuten?

anna

Dir reichen zwanzig Sekunden.

karpeles

anna

Hofman. Mit langem »o«. Hofman.

karpeles

Wie Ofen? Wie Ofenmann.”

Uit: The Kill List

“On a cold morning in early spring of 2014 a new name was added to the kill list. He was so elusive that even his true name was not known and the huge machine of American counter-terrorism had no picture of his face. Like Anwar al-Awlaki, the American/Yemini fanatic who preached hate sermons on the internet, who had once been on the kill list and who was wiped out by a drone-launched missile in North Yemen in 2010, the new addition also preached online. So powerful were his sermons that young Muslims in the Diaspora were converting to ultra-radical Islam and committing murders in its name.

Like Awlaki the new addition also delivered in perfect English. Without a name, he was known simply as The Preacher.

The assignment was given to J-SOC whose CO passed it down to TOSA, a body so obscure that ninety eight percent of serving U.S. officers have never heard of it.

In fact TOSA is the very small department, based in north Virginia, tasked with hunting down those terrorists who seek to hide themselves from American retributive justice.

That afternoon the director of TOSA, known in all official communications as Gray Fox, walked into the office of his senior manhunter and laid a sheet upon his desk. It simply bore the words:

‘The Preacher. Identify, Locate, Destroy.’

Under this was the signature of the Commander-in-Chief, the president. That made the paper a presidential executive order, an EXORD.

The man who stared at the order was an enigmatic Lt. Colonel of the US Marine Corps of forty four who also, inside and outside the building, was known only by a code. He was called THE TRACKER.”

Uit: The Multiple Effects of Rainshadow

“The world is full of moral disapproval. I have always tried to run a respectable establishment: clean rooms, clean linen, no drunks, no nonsense in the gentlemen's rooms of an evening - I mean girls, of course, and even boys. (Oh yes! I'm aware!) But since that terrible morning last year I seem to be thrown into a worm-pit of confusion. What is right? What is wrong? After that murderous Monday who can judge the reason for things? There is more forgiveness, Father Donellan told me in that hopeless hopeful voice of his, than we can ever assess.

You might have thought I could see it all coming.

But how? With my boarders to look after? Landladies get very possessive. And my daughters? But look after them I did, despite the appalling blanketing heat, the jellied air of monsoons that never hatched. Arguing often as not with that military martinet who ran the place. It wasn't easy. Nothing is easy.

Rollcall: Doctor Quigley, Matron Tullman, Misses Starck and Weber. Briefly, schoolmaster Vine. Then even more briefly that misfit Morrow. (l couldn't help liking him.) To say nothing of my girls: Claire still wrestling with correspondence lessons, refusing to stay at boarding school on the mainland; and Leonie at that older, troublesome age, so difficult, realising she is truly the hostage of biology.

There isn't anything sadder than the educated poor.

Us.”.

Uit: Lies of silence

“The time had come. There had been no war in his life. He would never be called up as a soldier and put to the test of bravery in battle. He would never be asked to perform an act of heroism as a member of a resistance group. He had, instead, been put to the test by accident, a test he had every right to refuse. And yet as he unlatched the gate and went up to the front door of the house he knew that the moment the phone rang and he answered it, the moment he told them he was afraid, he would lose forever something precious, something he had always taken for granted, some secret sense of his own worth.
He unlocked the front door and went into the hall. A phone was ringing upstairs. He looked at his watch. It was just after five. He began to run upstairs, pushing past a little red-haired man who was also on his way up.
"Sorry," he said.
"That's all right, guv."
When he unlocked the door of the flat, the phone was still ringing. But as he went into the hall it stopped. Now he would have to wait until he called back. He did not want to wait. He must get it over with now. He went to the phone. Don't let him persuade you. Tell him the truth. You are afraid.
"Sorry, guv. Gas man."
He turned. He had not closed the door. The little red-haired man was in the doorway. "I've come to read the meter, sir."
"Yes, go ahead."
"It's in the back, here," the meter man said, moving past him and opening the kitchen door.
"You're Mr. Dillon?"
"Yes."
The little meter man whistled, as though calling a dog. "Right, then," he said.
Two young men came in at the door. They wore jeans, T-shirts, sneakers. They raised their revolvers. They were not wearing masks. This time, there would be no witnesses.

Ein Traum ist unser Leben...

Ein Traum, ein Traum ist unser Leben

Auf Erden hier;

quelle agonie

j’aurais pu être sicaire
au service de la reine ngalifourou
je n’ai même pas eu cet alibi

je confesse
j’ai eu des vices
mais ai-je pu
supporter
qu’on batte les enfants
leurs pères et mères
devant les uns les autres

me voici aux limbes de toutes souffrances
bossu
quelle audace m’a ouvert les bras ?
avec les tempes crevées

par des longitudes onéreuses
il ne faut pas l’amour
qui ne gagne à la race

ô mes expédients
et j’ai encore chiné
non laissez-moi aimer sammy

de toutes mes forces
je tourne le dos aux voluptés
laissez-moi vivre pour vous

mais non
pauvre
l’encens le pus on s’étonne

d’un chiffre d’or
il a gagné la mort
vive l’amour

Peer

In weemoedige, herfstige sfeer

Troostvogel

Wanneer je soms iets naars beleeft
Je niet mag uitgaan door de regen
Of slaande ruzie hebt gekregen

In Doesburg of in 't Verre Oosten

't Is tweemaal vierenveertig, acht maal elf...

Echtelijke uren

Hij zei al eens heel trots
dat hij kan luisteren
zonder te luisteren
dus praat zij nu
tegen een slaapkamerwand
die na iedere zin
geïnteresseerd snurkt

Zij weet zij heeft
geen luisteraar nodig
maar moed om weer
te horen
mijn stem
zwijgend
in haar hoofd
haar fantasie

Babel

Hoog opgestapeld fruit was lang op reis
voordat rottende druiven hun vertrouwde huis
ellebogen is alles of anders in elk geval bijna anders

Uit: Moab Is My Washpot

“Let’s try--and God knows it’s hard--to be logical about this. If we object to corporal punishment, and I assume we do, on what grounds is this objection based? On the grounds that it is wrong to cause a child pain? Well, I don’t know about you, but when I recall childhood pain, I don’t recall the pains of toothache, a thrashed backside, broken bones, stubbed toes, gashed knees or twisted ankles--I recall the pains of loneliness, boredom, abandonment, humiliation, rejection and fear. Those are the pains on which I might and, still sometimes do, dwell, and those pains, almost without exception, were inflicted on me by other children and by myself.

I have paused on this subject of corporal punishment because the issue is so culturally loaded today as to be almost impossible to inspect. It comes in so many people’s minds very close to the idea of "abuse," a word which when used within ten spaces of the word "child" causes hysteria, madness and stupidity in almost everybody.

I know that had I dispassionately described to you the use of the cane without any comment, without summoning counsel for a conference in chambers, then many of you would have wondered what I was up to and whether I was entirely balanced. You will have to form your own judgements, but try to understand that when I think about being caned for repeatedly talking after lights out, or for Mobbing About In The Malt Queue, and other such mad prep-schooly infractions, I feel far less passion and distress than I do when I think about the times I was put into detention for crimes of which I was innocent.”

Mijn boeken

vertolken mij voorgoed.

Israël

‘Wie zegt me, Israël, zit jij verloren

Elegy for a Park

The labyrinth is lost. Lost too

all those lines of eucalyptus,

the summer awnings and the vigil

of the incessant mirror, repeating

the expression of every human face,

everything fleeting. The stopped

clock, the tangled honeysuckle,

the arbour, the frivolous statues,

the other side of evening, the trills,

the mirador and the idle fountain

are things of the past. Of the past?

If there’s no beginning, no ending,

and if what awaits us is an endless

sum of white days and black nights,

we are already the past we become.

We are time, the indivisible river,

are Uxmal, Carthage and the ruined

walls of the Romans and the lost

park that these lines commemorate.

Uit: Possession

“The book was thick and black and covered with dust. Its boards were bowed and creaking; it had been maltreated in its own time. Its spine was missing, or rather protruded from amongst the leaves like a bulky marker. It was bandaged about and about with dirty white tape, tied in a neat bow. The librarian handed it to Roland Michell, who was sitting waiting for it in the Reading Room of the London Library. It had been exhumed from Locked Safe no. 5 where it usually stood between Pranks of Priapus and The Grecian Way of Love. It was ten in the morning, one day in September 1986. Roland had the small single table he liked best, behind a square pillar, with the clock over the fireplace nevertheless in full view. To his right was a high sunny window, through which you could see the high green leaves of St. James's Square.
The London Library was Roland's favourite place. It was shabby but civilised, alive with history but inhabited also by living poets and thinkers who could be found squatting on the slotted metal floors of the stacks, or arguing pleasantly at the turning of the stair. Here Carlyle had come, here George Eliot had progressed through the bookshelves. Roland saw her black silk skirts, her velvet trains, sweeping compressed between the Fathers of the Church, and heard her firm foot ring on metal among the German poets. Here Randolph Henry Ash had come, cramming his elastic mind and memory with unconsidered trifles from History and Topography, from the felicitous alphabetical conjunctions of Science
and Miscellaneous--Dancing, Deaf and Dumb, Death, Dentistry, Devil and Demonology, Distribution, Dogs, Domestic Servants, Dreams. In his day, works on Evolution had been catalogued under Pre-Adamite Man. Roland had only recently discovered that the London Library possessed Ash's own copy of Vico's Principj di Scienza Nuova. Ash's books were most regrettably scattered across Europe and America.”

IWANOWO.

schalen, fleisch
und blutleeres gemäuer
frontal ins genick, so sahst du mich an.
ich weiß ich seh nichts als eine
demonstration gegen
uns, das wir, ist ein schwarzes schwitzendes
messer schärfer als deine augenbraue gezeichnet.

Uit: De scheepsjongens van Bontekoe

“Daar stond Peter Hajo, leerling in de hoefsmederij ‘De IJzeren Man’.

Stil!

Peter Hajo was verdwenen.

Buiten heerste december.

“This scene was repeated month after month; Maria, who hated studying and whose only other distraction in life was television, began to wish that the days would pass quickly; she waited eagerly for each journey to school and, unlike other girls her age, she found the weekends deadly dull. Given that the hours pass more slowly for a child than for an adult, she suffered greatly and found the days far too long simply because they allowed her only ten minutes to be with the love of her life and thousands of hours to spend thinking about him, imagining how good it would be if they could talk.
Then it happened.
One morning, on the way to school, the boy came up to her and asked if he could borrow a pencil. Maria didn't reply; in fact, she seemed rather irritated by this unexpected approach and even quickened her step. She had felt petrified when she saw him coming toward her, terrified that he might realize how much she loved him, how eagerly she had waited for him, how she had dreamed of taking his hand, of walking straight past the school gates with him and continuing along the road to the end, where—people said—there was a big city, film stars and television stars, cars, lots of cinemas, and an endless number of fun things to do.”

Lied im Spätherbst

Jahre gehäuft schon zu vielen Jahrzehnten-
vor uns statt Jahrzehnten nur Jahre
Und was wir erhofften, erträumten, ersehnten,
bekam längst- und gleich uns – schon weiße Haare.

Wir lassen uns kaum unter Feiernden sehen
und keuchen ganz schön auf den Stiegen
Und wenn wir noch Freunde besuchen gehen
dann meist, wo sie aufgebahrt liegen

Unsere Kinder sind groß
unsere Welt wird recht klein
Geliebte, wie könnt es denn anders sein?

Uit: Blue Shoes and Happiness

“When you are just the right age, as Mma Ramotswe was, and when you have seen a bit of life, as Mma Ramotswe certainly had, then there are some things that you just know. And one of the things that was well known to Mma Ramotswe, only begetter of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (Botswana's only ladies' detective agency), was that there were two sorts of problem in this life. Firstly, there were those problems-and they were major ones-about which one could do very little, other than to hope, of course. These were the problems of the land, of fields that were too rocky, of soil that blew away in the wind, or of places where crops would just not thrive for some sickness that lurked in the very earth. But looming greater than anything else there was the problem of drought. It was a familiar feeling in Botswana, this waiting for rain, which often simply did not come, or came too late to save the crops. And then the land, scarred and exhausted, would dry and crack under the relentless sun, and it would seem that nothing short of a miracle would ever bring it to life. But that miracle would eventually arrive, as it always had, and the landscape would turn from brown to green within hours under the kiss of the rain. And there were other colours that would follow the green; yellows, blues, reds would appear in patches across the veld as if great cakes of dye had been crumbled and scattered by an unseen hand.”

John Green

Uit: Looking for Alaska

“Before I got here, I thought for a long time that the way out of the labyrinth was to pretend that it did not exist, to build a small, self-sufficient world in a back corner of the endless maze and to pretend that I was not lost, but I was home. But that only led to a lonely life accompanied only by the last words of the already-dead, so I came here looking for a Great Perhaps, for real friends and a more-than-minor life. And then I screwed up and the Colonel screwed up and Takumi screwed up and she slipped through our fingers. And there's no sugar-coating it: she deserved better friends.
When she fucked up, all those years ago, just a little girl terrified into paralysis, she collapsed into the enigma of herself. And I could have done that, but I saw where it led for her. So I still believe in the Great Perhaps, and I can believe in it in spite of having lost her.
Because I will forget her, yes. That which came together will fall apart imperceptibly slowly, and I will forget, but she will forgive my forgetting, just as I forgive her for forgetting me and the Colonel and everyone but herself and her mom in those last moments she spent as a person. I know now that she forgives me for being dumb and scared and doing the dumb and scared thing.
And here's how I know:
I thought at first she was just dead. Just darkness. Just a body being eaten by bugs. I thought about her alot like that, like someone's meal. What was her - green eyes, half a smirk, the soft curves of her legs - would soon be nothing, just the bones I never saw. I thought about the slow process of becoming bone and then fossil and then coal that will, in millions of years, be mined by humans of the future, and how they would heat their homes with her, and then she would be smoke billowing out of a smokestack, coating the atmosphere. I still think that, sometimes, I think that maybe "the afterlife" is just something we made up to ease the pain of loss, to make the time in the labyrinth bearable. Maybe she was just matter, and matter gets recycled.
But ultimately I do not believe that she was just matter. The rest of her must be recycled, too. I believe now that we are greater than the sum of our parts. If you take Alaska's genetic code and you add her life experiences and the relationships she had with people, and then you take the size and shape of her body, you do not get her. There is something else entirely. There is a part of her greater than the sum of her knowable parts. And that part has to go somewhere, because it cannot be destroyed.”
