Engelbewaarder

1

Je hebt, denk ik, een overvol bestaan:

alle dagen meezingen in het koor

voor de almachtige, en ertussendoor

hier op de aarde mijn gangen nagaan,

mijn onverbeterlijke eigenwaan

Early Spring

When the waving heavens are soft
Cool inside the birth of green—
And the snowdrops filter
Through the blades and leaves

Budding and leafing
A rosy reflection—a mist of chill,
A pillow of muse in all its glory
And glistening, never blinding
A fading, a release,
A relinquishing on all
That is cold and vacant.
When the birds are plump
And wild with nature—
Seeking a link of rebirth.

Early spring, when the
World reopens to your embrace
And there is no need for cover,
For protection—
All you need is one smile—
And muse to live.
Early spring: when birth
Is a little gold, a little white.

Maple Lives

This yellow sweet anthem of spring is nearing
Sung and played by the Green Mistress's steering
Of mated birds and collected hives
This busy song, her ode to maple lives.
Frothing from her mother-bark's leaf
Is this sole drop, wet and golden and candy sweet.
How delicious for her to swallow all in her path,
To collect and drown their secret wrath...

Then forth she wanders, glassy and bubbling,
With stolen specks of silent troubling...
Frozen conspiracies and shadowed fights,
Arousing this nature's cast of caramel light.

The poor mass of humbled beings broken by her design,
Will illustrate the price of what's physically benign.
This maturing candy rock of once silent sweet flirt,
Will allow you to flavor those souls she had hurt.

“My phone rings. I let the machine pick up.
“Hey, it’s Jim … just wanted to know if you wanna go out for a quick drink.
Gimme a call, but try and get back—”
As I pick up the machine screeches like a strangled cat.
“Yes, definitely,” I tell him. “My blood alcohol level is dangerously low.”
“Cedar Tavern at nine,” he says.
Cedar Tavern is on University and Twelfth and I’m on Tenth and Third, just a few blocks away. Jim’s over on Twelfth and Second. So it’s a fulcrum between us. That’s one reason I like it. The other reason is because their martinis are enormous; great bowls of vodka soup. “See you there,” I say and hang up.
Jim is great. He’s an undertaker. Actually, I suppose he’s technically not an undertaker anymore. He’s graduated to coffin salesman, or as he puts it, “pre-arrangements.” The funeral business is rife with euphemisms. In the funeral business, nobody actually “dies.” They simply “move on,” as if traveling to a different time zone.
He wears vintage Hawaiian shirts, even in winter. Looking at him, you’d think he was just a normal, blue-collar Italian guy. Like maybe he’s a cop or owns a pizza place. But he’s an undertaker, through and through. Last year for my birthday, he gave me two bottles. One was filled with pretty pink lotion, the other with an amber fluid. Permaglow and Restorative: embalming fluids. This is the sort of conversation piece you simply can’t find at Pottery Barn. I’m not so shallow as to pick my friends based on what they do for a living, but in this case I have to say it was a major selling point.
A few hours later, I walk into Cedar Tavern and feel immediately at ease. There’s a huge old bar to my right, carved by hand a century ago from several ancient oak trees. It’s like this great big middle finger aimed at nature conservationists.”

Pater Filio

Sense with keenest edge unused,
   Yet unsteel'd by scathing fire;
Lovely feet as yet unbruised
   On the ways of dark desire;
Sweetest hope that lookest smiling
O'er the wilderness defiling!

Why such beauty, to be blighted
By the swarm of foul destruction?
Why such innocence delighted,
When sin stalks to thy seduction?
All the litanies e'er chaunted
Shall not keep thy faith undaunted.

I have pray'd the sainted Morning
   To unclasp her hands to hold thee;
From resignful Eve's adorning
   Stol'n a robe of peace to enfold thee;
With all charms of man's contriving
Arm'd thee for thy lonely striving.

Me too once unthinking Nature,
--Whence Love's timeless mockery took me,--
Fashion'd so divine a creature,
Yea, and like a beast forsook me.
I forgave, but tell the measure
Of her crime in thee, my treasure.

Weemoedt's Herfstcantate

Ik was niet altijd zo alleen,
integendeel: rondom mij heen

en denk dan stil: "the best there is"!

Asyl

Veel honden hebben baasjes,

veel mannen wel een vrouw.

Ik heb alleen maar niemand

waar ik zoveel van hou.

Dakkapel

’k Zie zo vaak verliefde paartjes

even stilstaan voor mijn huis:

‘Daar woont Weemoedt’, wijst de jongen.

En het meisje slaat een kruis.

Uit: The Fifth Child

“She was at the end of a long ward, which had any number of cots and beds along the walls. In the cots were- monsters. While she strode rapidly through the ward to the door at the other end, she was able to see that every bed or cot held an infant or small child in whom the human template had been wrenched out of pattern, sometimes horribly, sometimes slightly. A baby like a comma, great lolling head on a stalk of a body….then something like a stick insect, enormous bulging eyes among stiff fragilities that were limbs… a small girl all blurred, her flesh guttering and melting- a doll with chalky swollen limbs, it’s eyes wide open and blank, like blue ponds, and it’s mouth open, showing a swollen little tongue. A lanky boy was skewed, one half of his body sliding from the other. A child seemed at first glance normal, but then Harriet saw that there was no back to its head; it was all face which seemed to scream at her. Rows of freaks, nearly all asleep, and all silent. They were literally drugged out of their minds .Well, nearly silent: there was a dreary sobbing from a cot that had its sides shielded  with blankets.

(…)

“Someone conservative, old-fashioned, not to say obsolescent; timid, hard to please: this is what other people called them, but there was no end to the unaffectionate adjectives they earned. They defended a stubbornly held view of themselves, which was that they were ordinary and in the right of it, should not be criticised for emotional fastidiousness, abstemiousness, just because these were unfashionable qualities.

"Not all the singers of a thousand years"

Sonnet, dedicated to those French men of letters (Messrs. Zola, Copee, Sardou and others) who refused to compromise their spotless reputations or imperil their literary exclusiveness by signing a merciful petition in favour of Oscar Wilde.

Not all the singers of a thousand years

Can open English prisons. No. Though hell

Opened for Tracian Orpheus, now the spell

Of song and art is powerless as the tears

That love has shed. You that were full of fears,

And mean self-love, shall live to know full well

That you yourselves, not he, were pitiable

When you met mercy's voice with frowns or jeers.

And did you ask who signed the plea with you?

Fools! It was signed already with the sign

Of great dead men, of God-like Socrates,

Shakespeare and Plato and the Florentine

Who conquered form. And all your pretty crew

Once, and once only, might have stood with these.

Uit: Day

“Alfred was growing a moustache.
An untrained observer might think he was idling, at a loose end in the countryside, but this wasn't the case.
In fact, he was concentrating, thinking his way through every bristle, making sure they would align and be all right.
His progress so far was quite impressive: a respectable growth which already suggested reliability and calm. There were disadvantages to him, certain defects: the shortness, inelegant hands, possible thinning at his crown, habit of swallowing words before they could leave him, habit of looking mainly at the ground—and those few extra pounds at his waist, a lack of condition—but he wasn't so terribly ugly, not such a bad lot.
Mainly his problem was tiredness—or more an irritation with his tiredness—or more a tiredness that was caused by his irritation—or possibly both. He could no longer tell.
It wasn't that he was awkward, or peculiar, quite the reverse: he was biddable and sensible and ordinary, nothing more: but even an ordinary person could sometimes have enough and get browned off and, for example, want to be offered, every now and then, a choice.
That was only reasonable, wasn't it? A man had to imagine he'd got a chance at freedom, a bit of space. The interval between alternatives, that gave you space. But sometimes you would consider yourself and all you could see were obstructions and you'd be amazed that you ever were able to leave your house—your bed, never mind your house.
You'd look in the mirror some mornings and wonder why it didn't show; the way most of you was always yelling to get out.”
