Uit: Dream Stuff

“His father was missing - that was the official definition. Or, more hopefully, he was a prisoner of war. More hopefully because wars have a foreseeable end, their prisoners come home: to be missing is to have stepped into a cloud. Jack's mother, who was aware of this, never let a mealtime pass without in some way evoking him.
'I suppose,' she would say, 'your daddy will be having a bite to eat about now.'
They knew quite well he wouldn't be sitting down, as they were, to chops and boiled pudding, but it kept him, even if all he was doing was pushing a few spoonfuls of sticky rice into his mouth, alive and in the same moment with them.
When St Patrick's Day came round she would say: 'Sweet peas. They're your father's favourites. You should remember that, Jack. Maybe by the time they're ready he will be home.'
One year, struck by one of the models in a Paton and Baldwin pattern book, she knitted a cable-stitch sweater for him. Jack held the wool when it was wound, watching the yards and yards it would take pass over his hands. Twenty skeins! When all the parts were finished and had been assembled into the shape of a sweater, his mother held it up to her shoulders. 'Look, Jack.'
He was astonished by the bulkiness of it. He hadn't remembered his father's being so big. In a moment when his mother was out of the room he held its roughness to his cheek, but all he could smell was new wool.
Collapsed now between layers of tissue, it lay in a drawer of his father's lowboy acquiring an odour of naphthalene.”

Laß endlich, Vater! offenen Aug's mich dir
Herrlich ans Leben gebracht, o Vater! -

Wohl keimt aus jungen Reben uns heil'ge Kraft;

Uit: I Would Die 4 U

“I got a glimpse of Prince’s weird ways of interacting with people when I spent time with him at Paisley Park for a cover story I was writing for the now-defunct Icon magazine. It was 1998, and we did an interview that was too short and incomprehensible to support a cover story, partly because he didn’t allow recording devices, which made it nearly impossible to capture the dramatic, diversion-filled paragraphs he speaks in and that sometimes went in circles, using parables and sentences so cryptic that they’d fit in a David Lynch film. When I looked back at the notes I’d scribbled while he talked I kept asking myself, what did that mean? The notes I wrote did little justice to what he had said and I couldn’t commit his quotes to memory due to his unique language. So, his quotes, in my story, were often approximations of what he said, usually more his intent than his exact words. Apparently, he intends to be cryptic. An former girlfriend said, “Sometimes he says things that make you feel like you haven’t gotten an answer. He leaves you to have to think about every word he says, which is kind of irritating.”
After our interview, I asked his publicist if I could email him more questions. Because I had a cover story to do, it was allowed. I emailed Prince ten. The last question was, “Will you play basketball with me?” (I knew that in high school the only thing he really cared about, apart from music, was basketball. He played on his high school team and by all reports he was good although his chance to get a lot of playing time was stymied by being small.) Well, one night a few days later, he emailed back answers to some of my questions and ignored others, but to my question about basketball he wrote, “Any time brother . . . :).” Any time? I put a basketball in my bag and boarded the next possible plane to Minneapolis. I don’t think he expected that. I wanted a real human interaction with him but didn’t know if he could or would give it to me.”

Edgard Varèse unawares in New York

He certainly wasn't thinking "the emancipation of dissonance,"
as Schöenberg put it, slouched as he was, rumpled tie and all
from someone across mimicking Evans if it was Walker Evans
in those grainy black & white nights with the El rattling home
while signals dotting the darkness dawning
the same shrouded light the snowdrifts the awnings
and dumbwaiters all those under-the-table jobs he'd taken
without so much as a flinch, like selling
blood or a rare autographed copy or the many lost drafts
in pre-war Berlin when the art of taking a walk
stretched into shadows obliquely leading you nowhere
yes nowhere the damp slipping in quickly.
Never mind so far and so near.
Never mind the air so heavy with the scent of camel

Behoud

Morgen versnelt.
Gisteren zwelt
liefde doodt, gaat niet dood.

Behoud geen resten.
Stap over haar schreef.
Zij blijft de welriekende dreef
in jouw verwoeste gewesten.

Uit: Everyman

“Nancy told everyone, "I can begin by saying something to you about this cemetery, because I've discovered that my father's grandfather, my great-grandfather, is not only buried in the original few acres alongside my great-grandmother but was one of its founders in 1888. The association that first financed and erected the cemetery was composed of the burial societies of Jewish benevolent organizations and congregations scattered across Union and Essex counties. My great-grandfather owned and ran a boarding house in Elizabeth that catered especially to newly arrived immigrants, and he was concerned with their well-being as more than a mere landlord. That's why he was among the original members who purchased the open field that was here and who themselves graded and landscaped it, and why he served as the first cemetery chairman. He was relatively young then but in his full vigor, and it's his name alone that is signed to the document specifying that the cemetery was for `burying deceased members in accordance with Jewish law and ritual.' As is all too obvious, the maintenance of individual plots and of the fencing and the gates is no longer what it should be. Things have rotted and toppled over, the gates are rusted, the locks are gone, there's been vandalism. By now the place has become the butt end of the airport and what you're hearing from a few miles away is the steady din of the New Jersey Turnpike. Of course I thought first of the truly beautiful places where my father might be buried, the places where he and my mother used to swim together when they were young, and the places where he loved to swim at the shore.”

Uit: Leaving Brooklyn

„Only much later did I find that those words referred to quite a different sort of fidelity, to not bending your identity out of shape to fit the fashion. But by that time I was light years out of Brooklyn. I was becoming an actress. I was playing Polonius’s daughter.
I never broached the subject with my father, such matters not being, as he might put it, in his “department.” Also, he needed to be right in everything he undertook, and bristled at any hint of error or bungling. His department covered money and cars and going to work. I knew about the money part, for as far back as I could remember he would sit down after dinner at his small desk in the dining room, a desk that looked almost too small for him to fit his knees under, and I would stand beside him, jiggling the metal handles on the drawers, wordless but beseeching, till he pulled me up onto his lap. With arms reaching around me, he would go through mail, tear open envelopes, leaf through papers, and write. What was he doing?
He explained what bills were. “You should pay a bill the same day you receive it. Why wait?”
He would write out a check in his gallant, illegible writing - so that forever after I considered illegible writing a sign of masculinity and sophistication - put it in a small white envelope, dart his tongue across the wide V of the flap, pound it shut on the desk with his fist - the vibrations thumped excitedly through my body - and affix a stamp. Then he would tear up the remaining bits of paper littering the desk. Once in a while he even tore up an envelope unopened. He tore it across, then tore two or three more times with fierce gusts of energy, and threw the scraps in the wastebasket under the desk.
“Why do you have to tear it up?”
“It’s garbage.”
“I know, but why do you have to tear it up? Why can’t you just throw it away?”

Steppes

Traveller (Putnik, fragment)

Good Gracious God what have I done!
Trapped by night in a foreign land,
I don’t know what track to follow,
on bare rocks my feet do wallow,
Weary legs in a wilderness!

no shelter here have I yet found,
The north wind blows on snowy peaks,
While this poor wayfaring stranger
finds in darkness darkest danger,
As this rough earth with hardness speaks

All around the fog has fallen
And covered up now is the moon,
star tracks have disappeared and yes
Mayko mila (mother dearest),
If you could only see your son!

If only you could see this soul
surrounded just by poverty.
you sure would shed a bitter tear,
Indeed your hand would tremble here
To see him in such misery.
