Op de Vijf Zinnen

’t Misbruik der zinnen werkt in ’t einde pijn en smart,
Doch ’t redelijk gebruik vernoegt des mensen hart;

Veroorzaakt tussen mens en dier een groot verscheel;

Bij reukeloze neus, niet snuffende de geur;

De zoete saus is smaak, al schafte zelf Jupijn;

Men neem ’t gevoelen weg, zo treurt het welig wicht,
Met fakkel zonder vlam, met koker zonder schicht.

Uit: Will This Do? An Autobiography

„We sold Chilton Foliat rather well to an amiable businessman who has lived in it ever since. The money enabled Teresa to buy Combe Florey from my mother with enough left over to redecorate the main house. It also enabled my mother to refurbish the wing according to her particular requirements, with vast stone sinks which never let the water out and stank. But it was a happy enough arrangement while it lasted.
*  *  *  *

Being a more intensely private person than Evelyn Waugh - who, despite all his protestations to the contrary, was in large part a public Figure - Laura Waugh was also, in her own way, more remarkable. As Laura Herbert, she grew up in three households -Pixton in Somerset, a large house in Bruton Street and Portofino -all crowded with guests from every corner of the earth. This gave her a pronounced distaste for social life.
My father had met her first at Portofino, when she was seventeen. A year later, he was in love with her, but his suit did not seem well starred. Laura’s family was Catholic. Evelyn, who had become a Catholic in 1930 after the failure of his first marriage, seemed in no position to declare himself a suitor while his annulment was held up, apparently sine die, by the Westminster and Vatican bureaucracy. A further complication was that by unhappy coincidence his first wife, Evelyn Gardner, was a niece of Aubrey Herbert and Laura’s first cousin. Feeling in the family was strongly against the match. Although Evelyn Waugh was already a successful novelist, and would have been a catch for most teenage brides of the period, the Herberts were not a family to be intimidated by smartness of that sort. Evelyn was thirteen years older than his bride, had already been married to one member of the family and, worst of all, came from a background which was distinctly middle class.”

Clockwork Doll

I was a clockwork doll that night,
and I turned left and I turned right
and when I fell and broke to bits,
they recomposed my wax and wits.

I was a proper doll once more,
my manner carefully demure;
and yet a doll of another kind—
an injured twig that tendrils bind.

And when they asked me to a ball—
although my steps were rhythmical,
they partnered me with dog and cat.

My hair was gold, my eyes were blue.
I wore a dress where flowers grew.
Cherries blazed on my straw hat.

Like Rachel

To die like Rachel
when the soul shudders like a bird,
wants to break free.
Behind the tent, in fear and dread,
Jacob and Joseph speak of her,
a-tremble.
All the days of her life
turn head over heels inside her
like a baby that wants to be born.

How grueling. How
Jacob’s love ate away at her
with a greedy mouth.
As the soul takes leave now,
she has no use for any of that.

Suddenly the baby screeches,
Jacob comes into the tent—
all this Rachel does not even sense.
Rapture washes over her face,
her head.

Then did a great repose descend upon her.
The breath of her nostrils would not stir a feather.
They laid her down among mountain stones
and made her no lament.
To die like Rachel,
that’s what I want.

Uit: Baby Love

“For the last fifteen years I have told everyone—friends, family, hairdressers, editors, cabdrivers, doctors, and anyone else who would listen—that I wanted a baby. I want to have a baby, I would say with urgency or a wistful longing, or both. And I meant what I said, I really did, I just had no idea what I was talking about. I had almost no actual experience of babies, so the object of my wanting was abstract, the display of it ritualized. I want to have a baby was something I said, a statement that evoked a trajectory, a general direction for my life.
The truth is, I was wracked with ambivalence. I had the usual questions: When, with whom, and how the hell was I going to afford it? But there was something else, too, a question common—if not always conscious—to women of my generation, women raised to view motherhood with more than a little suspicion. Can I survive having a baby? Will I lose myself—my body, my mind, my options—and be left trapped, resentful, and irretrievably overwhelmed? If I have a baby, we wonder silently to ourselves, will I die?
To compound matters, I had a tempestuous relationship with my mother, and feared the inevitable kickback sure to follow such a final and dramatic departure from daughterhood. What if, instead of joy and excitement, my mother felt threatened by the baby, and pushed even further into the margins of my life? What if, then, out of jealousy and her own discontent, she launched covert or not-so-covert strikes against my irrefutable separateness, now symbolized so completely by becoming a mother myself?
Because mothers make us, because they map our emotional terrain before we even know we are capable of having an emotional terrain, they know just where to stick the dynamite. With a few small power plays—a skeptical comment, the withholding of approval or praise—a mother can devastate a daughter."

Uit: Eldest

“In the kitchen, Eragon brought a stone platter of food to a low table. Saphira watched him carefully in case he should have another attack. Several people tried to approach him, but she lifted a lip and growled sending them scurrying away. Eragon pretended to ignore the disturbances and picked at the food. Finally, trying to divert his thoughts from Murtagh, he asked, Who do you think has the means to take control of the Varden, now that Ajihad and the Twins are gone?
She hesitated. It's possible you could, if Ajihad's last words were interpreted as a blessing to secure the leadership. Almost no one would oppose you. However, that does not seem a wise path to take. I see only trouble in that direction.
I agree. Besides, Arya wouldn't approve, and she could be a dangerous enemy. Elves can't lie in the ancient language, but they have no such inhibition in ours-she could deny that Ajihad ever uttered those words if it served her purposes. No, I don't want the position. . . . What about Jörmundur?
Ajihad called him his right-hand man. Unfortunately, we know little about him or the Varden's other leaders. Such a short time has passed since we came here. We will have to make our judgment on our feelings and impressions, without the benefit of history.
Eragon pushed his fish around a lump of mashed tubers. Don't forget Hrothgar and the dwarf clans; they won't be quiet in this. Except for Arya, the elves have no say in the succession-a decision will be made before word of this even reaches them. But the dwarves can't be-won't be-ignored. Hrothgar favors the Varden, but if enough clans oppose him, he might be maneuvered into backing someone unsuited for the command.
And who might that be?
A person easily manipulated. He closed his eyes and leaned back. It could be anyone in Farthen Dûr, anyone at all.“

Nee, alles kon, zei Helena.

Lampmans oeuvre was beperkt in omvang.

What Do Poets Want With Gold?

What do poets want with gold,
Cringing slaves and cushioned ease;
Are not crusts and garments old
Better for their souls than these?

Gold is but the juggling rod
Of a false usurping god,
Graven long ago in hell
With a sombre stony spell,
Working in the world forever.
Hate is not so strong to sever
Beating human heart from heart.
Soul from soul we shrink and part,
And no longer hail each other
With the ancient name of brother
Give the simple poet gold,
And his song will die of cold.
He must walk with men that reel
On the rugged path, and feel
Every sacred soul that is
Beating very near to his.
Simple, human, careless, free,
As God made him, he must be:
For the sweetest song of bird
Is the hidden tenor heard
In the dusk, an even-flush,
From the forest's inner hush,
Of the simple hermit thrush.

What do poets want with love?
Flowers that shiver out of hand,
And the fervid fruits that prove
Only bitter broken sand?

Poets speak of passion best,
When their dreams are undistressed,
And the sweetest songs are sung,
E'er the inner heart is stung.
Let them dream; 'tis better so;
Ever dream, but never know.
If the their spirits once have drained
All that goblet crimson-stained,
Finding what they dreamed divine,
Only earthly sluggish wine,
Sooner will the warm lips pale,
And the flawless voices fail,
Sooner come the drooping wing,
And the afterdays that bring,
No such songs as did the spring.

Remembrance Day

Your proclaimed mourning
your flag at half-mast your
solemn face your smart backward
step and salute at the flowered
foot of empty graves your
glorious words-none, nothing
will their spirit appease. Had they
the choice they would gladly
have worn for you the same
stricken face gladly flown
your droopéd flag spoken
your tremulous eulogy-and
been alive. . . . Admittedly you
suffered too. You lived wretchedly
on all manner of gross fare;
you were tethered to the nervous
precipice day and night; your
groomed hair lost gloss, your
smooth body roundedness.
Truly
you suffered much. But now
you have the choice of a dozen
ways to rehabilitate yourself.

Pick any one of them and soon
you will forget the fear
and hardship, the peril
on the edge of the chasm. . . . The
shops stock again a variety
of hair dyes, the lace and
the gold are coming back; so
you will regain lost mirth
and girth and forget. But when,
how soon, will they their death? Long,
long after you forget they turned
newcomers again before the hazards
and rigors of reincarnation, rude
clods once more who once had borne
the finest scarifications of the potter's
delicate hand now squashed back
into primeval mud, they will
remember. Therefore fear them! Fear

their malice your fallen kindred
wronged in death. Fear their blood feud;
tremble for the day of their
visit! Flee! Flee! Flee your
guilt palaces and cities! Flee
lest they come to ransack
your place and find you still
at home at the crossroad hour. Pray
that they return empty-handed
that day to nurse their red-hot
hatred for another long year. . . .
Your glorious words are not
for them nor your proliferation
in a dozen cities of the bronze
heroes of Idumota. . . . Flee! Seek
asylum in distant places till
a new generation of heroes rise
in phalanges behind their purified
child-priest to inaugurate
a season of atonement and rescue
from fingers calloused by heavy deeds
the tender rites of reconciliation

“The machine has stopped climbing and hovers in the sky, its wings extended, its beak pointing northward, and it has every appearance of being motionless. The priest opens the sail a little more, three-quarters of the amber balls are already covered in shadow, and the machine starts to descend gently, it is like sailing across a tranquil lake in a small boat, a tiny adjustment to the rudder, a stroke with one oar, those little touches that only mankind is capable of inventing. Slowly, land begins to appear, Lisbon looms into sight, the uneven rectangle of the Palace Square, the labyrinth of streets and alleyways, the frieze of the veranda where the priest lives and where even now the officers of the Holy Office of the Inquisition are forcing an entry to arrest him, they have come too late, officers who are so scrupulous in the affairs of heaven, yet who forget to look up at the blue sky, where they would see the machine, a tiny dot in the remote distance, but how could they raise their eyes when they are confronted, to their horror, with a Bible whose pages have been torn out at the Pentateuch, when they are confronted by the Koran reduced to indecipherable fragments, they leave at once and head for the Rossio and the headquarters of the Holy Office of the Inquisition to report that the priest they had gone to arrest has already escaped, and it never occurs to them that he has taken refuge in the great celestial dome, which they will never know, because it is quite true that God has a weakness for madmen, the disabled, and eccentrics, but most certainly not for officers of the Holy Office of the Inquisition. The Passarola descends a little further, until the estate of the Duke of Aveiro comes into sight, and these three fliers are clearly beginners, they lack the experience that would enable them to distinguish important landmarks at a glance, rivers and streams, lakes, villages sprinkled like stars on earth, dense forests, they can see the four walls of the coach-house, the airport from which they launched their flight, Padre Bartolomeu Lourenço suddenly remembers that he has a spyglass in the chest, he fetches it at once and trains it downwards, ah, how wonderful to be able to live and invent things, he can now distinguish the pallet in the corner, and the forge, but the harpsichord has disappeared,…”

‘Quand on était anticommuniste de manière resolue, on était catalogué à droite. Bon.

Mulberry

You have towered here
leaning half over the wall
all my awareness

years before I knew
what silkworm was or China
I felt your berries

pulp under my feet
tracked your purple all over
grandmother’s carpet

a sapling planted
by some sea captain to make
shade for a future

This winter you lost
one of  your long low branches
to a backed-up car

and the old woman
who has known you all her life
wept at the split wood

Your bark is wrinkled
more deeply than any face
you live so slowly

do our voices sound
to you like the fluttering
of  paper moth wings

do we seem rootless
holding fast to the anchor
of  the saddest things

Uit: Friends Like These

« Surely not. I wasn't a man. I was a boy. I had a silly, ungrown-up job, for starters  -  writing columns and hosting quiz shows.
But steadily, the tremors got stronger. We started buying fresh bread. We visited a farmers' market and bought some olives, despite the fact that very few local farmers in this part of London have ever actually farmed an olive.
I wanted to talk to Lizzie about what was happening, but she seemed so comfortable, so at ease with this slide into domesticity, that it never seemed the right moment.
Then she brought home some display cushions. Not for bottoms, for display only. She also bought some sticks which she stuck in a jar and convinced me were a 'dramatic focal point' for our living room.
I smiled and hid the copy of Kung Fu Soccer I'd bought that afternoon in HMV. In the evening, I poured out my heart over a pint with my mate, Ian.
'What's happening to me, Ian?' I asked. 'I don't want to be one of those men you see wandering around Ikea or the linen section of John Lewis. You know the ones  -  lost souls who discuss congestion charging and wear jeans with elasticated waists.'
'It nearly happened to me,' said Ian, heavily. And then, with real gravitas: 'I even bought a juicer.'
I remembered that. He'd drunk nothing but carrot juice for six weeks and his elbows turned yellow.
'I managed to pull back from the brink,' said Ian. 'That's what you have to do. Before you become a Stepford Man.'
'What if it's too late?' I said, panicked and nervy. 'What if I've already become one of Them? Just the other day . . . God, I can't believe I'm going to tell you this . . .'
Ian closed his eyes and waved me on.
'I saw a girl walking through town. I could see her midriff, and . . .' Ian leaned forward. 'And I tutted, Ian. I bloody tutted.'
'You tutted?' He was outraged. This was worse than he thought.”

Frühlingslied

Es ist wahr, der Frühling ist da!
Das Rotkehlchen bläht die über-
mütige Brust, als gehöre der Garten
ihm. Die Kinder lassen die Mützen im
Schrank und wandern zu Abenteuern
im fernen Rebhuhn-Gesträuch. In den
Lüften streiten sich Krähen und
Baumfalken um günstige Hoch-
sitze. Und hier unten, in den Stuben,
das muß gesagt werden, öffnen die Herz-
kranken die Fenster und blasen ein
bißchen die Backen, die Fanfare,
vielleicht fürs allerletzte Jahr.
Ist es wahr, ist der Frühling
hier?

Uit:The Investigators

“Early that June, Constantine Boyd left Detroit with his usual trunk but got on a train headed east instead of west. For the past three summers he’d worked at his uncle’s farm in western Michigan, but now, just as he was becoming truly useful, his family had made other plans. Because a different uncle had requested the loan of him, he was being shipped elsewhere: like a harrow, or a horse.
He was twelve that summer of 1908, and he sulked all the way to Toledo, napped between Toledo and Cleveland, woke angry with his absent mother but then forgave her in Erie, when he found the cookies she’d slipped in beside the sandwiches. In Buffalo he passed a bank that looked like a castle, horses plodding along the canal, and a gigantic electric hoist moving grain from a ship into an empty boxcar. At the station where he switched for the train to Bath, he saw a motorized bicycle, one of the very sights his mother had promised, being chased by a terrier, and with that his bad mood slipped away. He was going someplace near water, he remembered. With new people, new things to see and do, away from the steaming city and his father.
In Bath, one of those new people carried Constantine’s trunk to a dusty automobile. “It was made up the road in Syracuse,” his mother’s younger brother said, running his knobby hand over the hood. “I know the engine’s inventor.”

Uit: Papillon(Vertaal door Walter B. Michaels)

"Look at them, there in front of you. Can you see them clearly, those dozen cheeseheads brought to Paris from some distant village? They're only petits bourgeois, some retired, others small businessmen. Not worth talking about. You can't expect them to understand your twenty-five years and the life you've led in Montmartre. To them, Pigalle and the Place Blanche are hell itself, and anybody who stays up half the night is an enemy of society. They like to serve on this jury, are extremely proud of it, in fact.
Moreover, I can assure you, they're all acutely aware of their own mean little lives.
"And here you are, young and handsome. Surely you realize I'm going to hold nothing back when I describe you as a Don Juan of Montmartre? I'll make them your enemies straight off. You're too well dressed. You should have worn more humble garments. Ah, that was a major tactical error. Don't you see they envy you your clothes? They buy theirs at Samaritaine. Never have they gone to a tailor, even in their dreams."
It was now ten o'clock, and we were ready to start. Before me were six magistrates, one of whom was an aggressive attorney who was going to use all his Machiavellian power and intelligence to convince these twelve shopkeepers that I was guilty...”

Bosi

Growl, my Bósi, never bite ---
better heed this warning!
Or someone --- turning snappish --- might
smash your jaw some morning.

And never join the gibing pack
of 'gentlefolk' that flatters
until a man has turned his back ---
then tears his name to tatters.

Mowing Song

Swishing, stripping, slashing,
slowly he goes mowing,
scythe-blade lashing lithely,
lethally beneath him.
Gallant flowers are falling,
fate betrays the daisies.
Iron edge is tireless;
under him, earth thunders.

'Let's be glad!' the little
lamb bleats out and gambols,
'glad that when the winter
wakens, and they take me
from its dread and deadly
dangers to the manger,
loads of luscious fodder
lie there sweet and drying!'

Slashing, stripping, swashing,
sweeping, he goes reaping,
scythe is swishing blithely.
Slow, behind the mower,
walks a woman raking --
watch your distance, mistress!
not too near me, darling --
near my vicious whishing!

All the flowers have fallen,
fairest grasses perish:
life is brief, aborted
by the ripper's stripping.
Haft is humming softly,
hefted firmly, deftly;
iron edge is tireless;
under him, earth thunders.

Es beginnt erst der Mensch...

Es beginnt erst der Mensch,
wo die Ausbeutung endet,
wo das Brot, das du ißt,
keinen würgt,
wo die Frau ihren Pfennig
nicht tausendmal wendet,
wo das Leben
das Leben verbürgt.

Es beginnt erst der Mensch,
wo das Sterben verständlich,
weil die Jahre
zur Neige gelebt,
und wo endlich
der menschliche Friede unendlich,
wo das Schwert
keine Gräber mehr gräbt.

Es beginnt erst der Mensch,
wo die Herzen erklingen,
wo die Flamme der Menschlichkeit
brennt
