Schließer

auch diese Nacht fällt
hinter deinem Haus zu Boden
du hast freie Sicht tief hinein
weißt von den Funkmasten den Rasthöfen
wie Transit sich daran entlang spurt
mit rotem Licht die Sedimente abfährt
das Zurückgelassene nachdunkelt
viel hast du dort geborgen
dir stur in die Zimmer gestellt
Schwemmholz deiner Herkunft

Blazon

The snow-white Olympic swan,
with beak of rose-red agate,
preens his eucharistic wing,
which he opens to the sun like a fan.

His shining neck is curved
like the arm of a lyre,
like the handle of a Greek amphora,
like the prow of a ship.

He is the swan of divine origin
whose kiss mounted through fields
of silk to the rosy peaks
of Leda's sweet hills.

White king of Castalia's fount,
his triumph illumines the Danube;
Da Vinci was his baron in Italy;
Lohengrin is his blond prince.

His whiteness is akin to linen,
to the buds of white roses,
to the diamantine white
of the fleece of an Easter lamb.

He is the poet of perfect verses,
and his lyric cloak is of ermine;
he is the magic, the regal bird
who, dying, rhymes the soul in his song.

This winged aristocrat displays
white lilies on a blue field;
and Pompadour, gracious and lovely,
has stroked hs feathers.

He rows and rows on the lake
where dreams wait for the unhappy,
where a golden gondola waits
for the sweetheart of Louis of Bavaria.

Countess, give the swans your love,
for they are gods of an alluring land
and are made of perfume and ermine,
of white light, of silk, and of dreams.

Dreamhorse

Laddie, we called him, Laddie the horse
our father rescued from a house
the auctioneer was knocking down,
knocking down, knocking down,
his little hammer knocking down,
carriage clock and rocking horse.

Conceived in a horse-drawn century,
a foal delivered by carpentry
from the dark of a sapwood womb
to paint-shop and tack-room,
for children to canter and groom
in a mechanised century.

The girls' Black Beauty, my Bucephalus,
my Copenhagen, Pegasus –
responding to the spur
that drove him over
battlefield and frontier –
grew old along with us.

His mane receded. Cowboy spurs cut up
his flank. He lost a stirrup,
but horse-doctors today
can keep old age at bay –
in rocking horses, anyway.
Grandson, let me give you a leg up.

Uit: Schroedinger’s Jew

“97 years ago today Leopold Bloom, a fictitious man, wandered the streets of Dublin, a real city; and Joyce scholars still argue about his odd odyssey. I would like to add to the confusion with a note about Bloom's "Jewishness."
"Is" Leopold Bloom a Jew?
Not according to Orthodox Rabbinical law, which defines a Jew as the child of a Jewish mother. Bloom as the child of a Protestant mother "is not" a Jew.
According to Nazi law, however, a Jew "is" a person with a known Jewish ancestor. Bloom as the son of Rudolph Bloom [born Rudolph Virag], "is" a Jew.
See how easily a person can "be" and "not be" a Jew at the same time?
On the third hand, most humanists define a Jew as one who believes in and practices the Judaic religion. By this definition, Bloom who neither believes in nor practices any religion "is not" a Jew. But Marilyn Monroe, who practiced and probably tried to believe in Judaism while married to Arthur Miller, "was" a Jew by that definition-- for those few years, if not before or after.
Extensionally or phenomenologically, a Jew "is" somebody considered Jewish by all or most of the people he meets. By this standard the multi-ordinal Bloom "is" a Jew again.
Once more: in terms of pure existentialism a Jew "is" somebody who chooses to consider themselves Jewish. Bloom obviously doesn't consider himself Jewish but Irish, most of the time. Only when under verbal assault by the anti-semitic Citizen in Barney Kiernan's pub does Bloom define himself as Jewish ["And Jesus was a Jew too. Your god. He was a Jew like me."] Here he obviously has in mind the "known Jewish ancestor" rule, because he adds "And so was his father," to which the Citizen replies, as a correct Catholic, "He had no father," and Bloom, unfamiliar with that theology -- logic played with deuces, eights and one-eyed jacks wild -- can only pragmatically reply, "Well, his uncle then."

Uit: The House at Pooh Corner

“Then, suddenly again, Christopher Robin, who was still looking at the world, with his chin in his hand, called out "Pooh!" "Yes?" said Pooh. "When I'm--when--Pooh!" "Yes, Christopher Robin?" "I'm not going to do Nothing any more." "Never again?" "Well, not so much. They don't let you." Pooh waited for him to go on, but he was silent again. "Yes, Christopher Robin?" said Pooh helpfully. "Pooh, when I'm--you know--when I'm not doing Nothing, will you come up here sometimes?" "Just me?" "Yes, Pooh." "Will you be here too?" "Yes Pooh, I will be really. I promise I will be Pooh." "That's good," said Pooh. "Pooh, promise you won't forget about me, ever. Not even when I'm a hundred." Pooh thought for a little. "How old shall I be then?" "Ninety-nine." Pooh nodded. "I promise," he said. Still with his eyes on the world Christopher Robin put out a hand and felt Pooh's paw. "Pooh," said Christopher Robin earnestly, "if I--if I'm not quite--" he stopped and tried again-- "Pooh, whatever happens, you will understand, won't you?" "Understand what?" "Oh, nothing." He laughed and jumped to his feet. "Come on!" "Where?" said Pooh. "Anywhere." said Christopher Robin.
So, they went off together. But wherever they go, and whatever happens to them on the way, in that enchanted place on the top of the Forest, a little boy and his Bear will always be playing.”

My Little Boy That Died

Look at his pretty face for just one minute !
His braided frock and dainty buttoned shoes,
His firm-shut hand, the favorite plaything in it,
Then, tell me, mothers, was it not hard to lose
And miss him from my side,—
My little boy that died?

How many another boy, as dear and charming,
His father's hope, his mother's one delight,
Slips through strange sicknesses, all fear disarming,
And lives a long, long life in parents' sight
Mine was so short a pride:
And then—my poor boy died.

I see him rocking on his wooden charger;
I hear him pattering through the house all day;
I watch his great blue eyes grow large and larger,
Listening to stories, whether grave or gay
Told at the bright fireside—
So dark now, since he died.

But yet I often think my boy is living,
As living as my other children are.
When good-night kisses I all round am giving
I keep one for him, though he is so far.
Can a mere grave divide
Me from him—though he died?

So, while I come and plant it o'er with daisies
(Nothing but childish daisies all year round)
Continually God's hand the curtain raises,
And I can hear his merry voice's sound,
And I feel him at my side—
My little boy that died.

Uit: Popa Tanda (Vertaald door Lucy Byng)

“The long and the short of it was that Father Trandafir was sent from Butucani to Saraceni—to promote a good understanding among the faithful. Priest in Saraceni! Who knows what that means to be priest in Saraceni? That is what befell Father Trandafir! Who would fain leap the ditch throws his bag over it first. Father Trandafir only had a wife and two children; his bag was empty. That was why he leaped so unwillingly from Butucani to Saraceni.
In the "Dry Valley" there was a village which they called "Saraceni." A village called "poor" in a "dry" valley; could any place have a more unpleasant name?
The Dry Valley!
"Valley" because the place was shut in between mountains; "dry," because the stream, which had cut its way through the middle of the valley, was dry most of the year.
This was how the valley lies.
To the right stood a hill called "Rîpoasa." On the left were three other hills, called "Fatza," "Grofnitza," and "Alunish." Rîpoasa was rocky. Fatza was cultivated; the village stood on Grofnitza, while on Alunish lay the village graveyard among hazel and birch trees. Thus it lay to right and left, but the chief feature of the landscape stood at the bottom. Here rose the mountains—from there, came what did come.
The other side, beyond Rîpoasa was the Rapitza Valley—a much deeper valley than the Dry Valley, and so called because the Rapitza flowed through it. The Rapitza was a treacherous river, especially in the spring, and the stream in the Dry Valley was a branch of the Rapitza. In the spring, when the snow melted on the mountains, the Rapitza got angry and poured part of her fury into the branch that flowed through the Dry Valley, and the latter ceased to be "dry."

“In case you didn't know, in secondary school - especially in the early years of secondary school - diversity is not celebrated. In secondary school, being different is the worst crime you can commit. Actually, in secondary school, being different is pretty much the only crime you can commit. Most of the things the UN considers crimes are not considered crimes at secondary school. Being cruel is fine. Being brutal is fine. Being obnoxious is fine. Being superficial is especially fine. Explosive acts of violence are fine. taking pleasure in the humiliation of others is fine. Holding someone's head down the toilet is fine (and the weaker the someone, and the dirtier the toilet, the finer it is). None of these things will hurt your social standing. But being different - that's unforgivable. Being different is the fast-track to
Pariah Town. a pariah is someone who's excluded from mainstream society. And if you know that at twelve years of age, you're probably an inhabitant of Pariah Town.”

“If you're a boy, any display of sensitivity is gay. Compassion is gay. Crying is supergay. Reading is usually gay. Certain songs and types of music are gay. 'Enola Gay' would certainly be thought gay. Love songs are gay. Love itself is incredibly gay, as are any other heartfelt emotions. Singing is gay, but chanting is not gay. Wanking contests are not gay. Neither is all-male cuddling during specially designated periods in football matches, or communal bathing thereafter. (I didn't invent the rules of gay - I'm just telling you what they are.)”

Uit: Prince (Vertaald door Barbara Haveland)

„These are the next to go. From cathedral to village church, from palace to ruin, the transformation progresses into more rounded contours. The iceberg bobs on the waves like a message in a bottle from wastelands where men and dogs perish. Within the confines of the glass the image is starting to develop. It looks like a ship with a hundred masts.
Ninety-seven of these disappear; they were but reflections in crystal, refractions of the light, particles and impurities within the fabric. But three remain, and three are enough for a ship. A wooden craft with broken masts that have collapsed onto the deck to lie there in a welter of savagely ripped sails and ropes from the rigging.
Still it lies behind glass, but the glass runs with moisture, eaten away to a thinner pane with each day that passes. Details become visible.
The ship appears to have been caught in a gale. The galley has been smashed to pieces, the cabin lies shattered beneath the spanker, the blades of oars stick out here, there, and everywhere from lifeboats that no living soul had time to launch. Spars and cleats have come adrift, davits have been twisted out of shape, and ventilator cowlings crushed beneath the shrouds.
There are no dead to be seen. Only the shambles they left behind them.
Under the hatches, emptiness and ivory hold sway; in the hold a coffin lies lashed to the foot of the mast. I hear the hooting of a ship in the fog, wake, stretch, and give a great yawn in these cramped quarters so reminiscent of a bunk. We are approaching a foreign coastline. One by one, foghorn answers foghorn.”

“JESSICA (bored): Markus has demonstrated everything that can be done with his mobile phone.
MARKUS: But girls don't understand these sort of things.
ELIN: What sort of things?
MARKUS: Cell phones and that sort, sports, cars, porno... hehehe
Markus tosses himself backwards with his hands over his head.
He thinks Jessica will hit him, but she doesn't.
ELIN (to Markus): You're so stupid. What are we good at, then?
MARKUS: I don't know... Make‑up and such things...
JESSICA: So you think we just tease and put make‑up on ourselves the whole day.
MARKUS: No, what the heck, I don't know
ELIN: What else then?
MARKUS: What 'what else then'?
ELIN: Other things we're good at.
MARKUS: I don't know, appearance, clothes, make‑up, and those kinds of things.”
ELIN: You are so bloody stupid!”

und doch will ich wüten
gegen die stunden
in denen du fort bist

memento

wird wer erzählen von uns
wissen von unseren gesten
wie bleibt das erhalten?
und die zeit die wir waren
am ende bekommt sie die namen
von generälen von hungersnöten
von kollaps von aufstand
und das ganz ohne einspruch
und keiner weiß mehr
wie du die hand hieltst
und welchen schatten sie warf
auf dein gesicht blicktest du
gegen die sonne

SELBSTPORTRAIT

Sie ließen unsre Demut still geschehen.

uns menschlich an. Wir suchten zu verstehen
und spürten eines Gottes Hauch nicht wehen.
Sie ruhen sanft im Frieden seiner Tatzen.

Sie schlafen nun in tieferen Bezirken,
sind duettierend nahe bei Rossini,
im Grab beschützt von Zweigen schlanker Birken.

In Casta-Diva-Nächten des Bellini,
so mögen sie wie Monde Wunder wirken,
Angelikas Geschwister bei Puccini.

„8.3.99 Berlin Wien
FRAU DDR-PROFESSOR

Hay-Cutters

Time tells them. They go along touching
the grass, the feathery ends. When it feels
just so, they start the mowing machine,
leaving the land its long windrows,
and air strokes the leaves dry.

Sometimes you begin to push; you want to
hurry the sun, have the hours expand, because
clouds come. Lightning looks out from their hearts.
You try to hope the clouds away.
'Some year we'll have perfect hay.'

With Kit, Age 7, at the Beach

We would climb the highest dune,
from there to gaze and come down:
the ocean was performing;
we contributed our climb.

Waves leapfrogged and came
straight out of the storm.
What should our gaze mean?
Kit waited for me to decide.

Standing on such a hill,
what would you tell your child?
That was an absolute vista.
Those waves raced far, and cold.

'How far could you swim, Daddy,
in such a storm?'
'As far as was needed,' I said,
and as I talked, I swam.

Verses To A Child

3
Just then thou didst recall to me
A distant long forgotten scene,
One smile, and one sweet word from thee
Dispelled the years that rolled between;
I was a little child again,
And every after joy and pain
Seemed never to have been.

4
Tall forest trees waved over me,
To hide me from the heat of day,
And by my side a child like thee
Among the summer flowerets lay.
He was thy sire, thou merry child.
Like thee he spoke, like thee he smiled,
Like thee he used to play.

5
O those were calm and happy days,
We loved each other fondly then;
But human love too soon decays,
And ours can never bloom again.
I never thought to see the day
When Florian's friendship would decay
Like those of colder men.

Zaterdagavond

Bombam, bombam
De groote klokke luidt;
Bombam, bombam
Wie weet wat dit beduidt?
De week is uit, de week is uit
En morgen is het zondag!

Bombam, bombam,
Ons huis is opgetooid;
Bombam, bombam,
De vloer met zand bestrooid,
Het wit gordijntje versch geplooid:
Want morgen is het zondag!

Bombam, bombam,
De koster luidt zoo sterk;
Bombam, bombam,
Sa, jongens aan het werk!
De straat gereven tot een perk,
Want morgen is het zondag!

Bombam, bombam,
De schoenen zijn gepoetst,
Bombam, bombam,
Ei! deed men nog iet goeds,
Zoo men op morgen werken moest?

Was sollte schiefgehen? fragte ich.
Du lässt dich in nichts hineinziehen.

Uit: The Far Country

“He thought about it, trying to absorb this new idea, to visualize what it was that she wanted. "I thought you might like a bracelet, or a ring," he said. With so much money in their pockets, after so long, she should have something really good.
She squeezed his arm. "That's sweet of you, but I don't want jewelry. I'd never be anywhere where I could wear it. No, I want a picture."
He tried to measure her desire by yardstick. "Any idea what it'll cost?"
"I don't know till I see it," she said. "It might cost a hundred pounds."
"A hundred pounds!" he said. "My word!"
"Well, what's the Ford going to cost you?"
"Aw, look," he said. "That's different. That's for the station."
"No, it's not," she said. "The Chev'll do the station work for years to come. It's for you to run about in and cut a dash, and it's costing fourteen hundred pounds."
"It's for both of us," he said weakly, " and it comes off the tax."
"Not all of it," she said. "If you're having your Ford Custom I'm going to have my picture."
He realized that she was set on having this picture; it was a strange idea to him, but he acquiesced. "There's a shop down here somewhere," he said. "Maybe there'd be something there you like."
When they came to the shop it was closed, but the windows were full of pictures, religious and secular. He knew better than to offer her a picture of the infant Christ in her present mood, although he rather admired it himself. He said, "That's a nice one, that one of the harbour. The one where it says 'St. Ives."'

“Up to his five and twentieth year, he had been industrious and steady, had kept his terms in the Temple, and studied late and early. The sober application of William Vane had been a by word with the embryo barristers around; Judge Vane, they ironically called him; and they strove ineffectually to allure him away to idleness and pleasure. But young Vane was ambitious, and he knew that on his own talents and exertions must depend his own rising in the world. He was of excellent family, but poor, counting a relative in the old Earl of Mount Severn. The possibility of his succeeding to the earldom never occurred to him, for three healthy lives, two of them young, stood between him and the title. Yet those have died off, one of apoplexy, one of fever, in Africa, the third boating at Oxford; and the young Temple student, William Vane, suddenly found himself Earl of Mount Severn, and the lawful possessor of sixty thousand a year.
His first idea was, that he should never be able to spend the money; that such a sum, year by year, could _not_ be spent. It was a wonder his head was not turned by adulation at the onset, for he was courted, flattered and caressed by all classes, from a royal duke downward. He became the most attractive man of his day, the lion in society; for independent of his newly-acquired wealth and title, he was of distinguished appearance and fascinating manners. But unfortunately, the prudence which had sustained William Vane, the poor law student, in his solitary Temple chambers entirely forsook William Vane, the young Earl of Mount Severn, and he commenced his career on a scale of speed so great, that all staid people said he was going to ruin and the deuce headlong.”

Uit: Dialogues of the Dead

„Lord Falkland.—Nature, sir, will in the end be sure to set right whatever opinion contradicts her great laws, let who will be the teacher.  But, indeed, the more I reflect on those miserable times in which we both lived, the more I esteem it a favour of Providence to us that we were cut off so soon.  The most grievous misfortune that can befall a virtuous man is to be in such a state that he can hardly so act as to approve his own conduct.  In such a state we both were.  We could not easily make a step, either forward or backward, without great hazard of guilt, or at least of dishonour.  We were unhappily entangled in connections with men who did not mean so well as ourselves, or did not judge so rightly.  If we endeavoured to stop them, they thought us false to the cause; if we went on with them, we ran directly upon rocks, which we saw, but could not avoid.  Nor could we take shelter in a philosophical retreat from business.  Inaction would in us have been cowardice and desertion.  To complete the public calamities, a religious fury, on both sides, mingled itself with the rage of our civil dissensions, more frantic than that, more implacable, more averse to all healing measures.  The most intemperate counsels were thought the most pious, and a regard to the laws, if they opposed the suggestions of these fiery zealots, was accounted irreligion.  This added new difficulties to what was before but too difficult in itself, the settling of a nation which no longer could put any confidence in its sovereign, nor lay more restraints on the royal authority without destroying the balance of the whole constitution.  p. 12In those circumstances, the balls that pierced our hearts were directed thither by the hands of our guardian angels, to deliver us from horrors we could not support, and perhaps from a guilt our souls abhorred. »

Uit:The 19th Wife

“In the one year since I renounced my Mormon faith, and set out to tell the nation the truth about American polygamy, many people have wondered why I ever agreed to become a plural wife. Everyone I meet, whether farmer, miner, railman, professor, cleric, or the long-faced Senator, and most especially the wives of these-everyone wants to know why I would submit to a marital practice so filled with subjugation and sorrow. When I tell them my father has five wives, and I was raised to believe plural marriage is the will of God, these sincere people often ask, But Mrs. Young-how could you believe such a claim?
Faith, I tell them, is a mystery, elusive to many, and never easy to explain.
Now, with the publication of this autobiography, my enemies will no doubt suspect my motives. Having survived attempts on both my life and character, however, I stand unconcerned by their assaults. I have chosen to commit my memories to the page neither for fame, the trough from which I have drunk and would be happy never to return to, nor fortune, although it is true I am without home and have two small boys to care for. Simply, I wish to expose the tragic state of polygamy's women, who must live in a bondage not seen in this country since the abolishment of slavery a decade ago; and to reveal the lamentable situation of its children, lonely as they are.

I promise my Dear Reader I shall recount my story truthfully, even when it distresses me to do so. In these pages you will come to know my mother, who by religious duty welcomed four wives into her husband's bed. You will encounter the old woman forced to share her husband with a girl one-fifth her age. And you shall meet the gentleman with so many wives that when one approaches him on the street, he answers, "Madame, do I know you?"
I can, and will, go on.
Under what circumstances does such outrage thrive? The Territory of Utah, glorious as it may be, spiked by granite peaks and red jasper rocks, cut by echoing canyons and ravines, spread upon a wide basin of gamma grass and wandering streams, this land of blowing snow and sand, of iron, copper, and the great salten sea-Utah, whose scarlet-golden beauty marks the best of God's handiwork-the Territory of Utah stands defiant as a Theocracy within the borders of our beloved Democracy, imperium in imperio.“

Nanne Tepper

Twee dingen goed begrijpen.
