Weet toch dat Uw taal slechts is in m i j n hand veilig,
Wijl zij gestaêg door m i j n stem slechts klinkt heilig.

Stil in hun lekkere bedjes gelegen.....

of daar achter elk schijnsel iemand
tekende las klarinet blies touwtjesprong at

Papaver somniferum

Dichtgevouwen halve manen jongemeisjesrood

Dag hemel in cipressenrouw. Dag hemelende cipres.

Uit:Feeding on Dreams: Confessions of an Unrepentant Exile

“So we set out, with cameras at the ready, for New York, another city of my dreams assaulted on another September 11, again a Tuesday morning when fire fell from the sky. Though by 2001 very few people in the world recalled the existence of that remote Chilean date, I was besieged by the need to extract some hidden meaning behind the juxtaposition and coincidence of those twinned episodes bequeathed to me by the malignant gods of random history. There was something horribly familiar in that experience of disaster, confirmed during my visit to the ruins where the twin towers had once reached for the sky.
What I recognized was a parallel suffering, a disorientation that echoed what we had lived through in Chile. Its most turbulent incarnation was the hundreds of relatives roaming the streets of New York after 9/11, clutching photographs of sons, fathers, lovers, daughters, husbands, begging for information, are they alive, are they dead?, every citizen of the United States forced to look into the chasm of what it means to be desaparecido, with no certainty or funeral possible for those who are missing. The photographs were still there in 2006, pinned on the wires separating the ogling spectators from the abyss, encouraging me to use the unique perspective of my own life to forge a message to the citizens of America lost in a labyrinth of pain.”

Aber vielleicht

Meine großen Worte
werden mich nicht vor dem Tode schützen
und meine kleinen Worte
werden mich nicht vor dem Tode schützen
überhaupt kein Wort
und auch nicht das Schweigen zwischen
den großen und kleinen Worten
wird mich vor dem Tod schützen

Aber vielleicht
werden einige
von diesen Worten
und vielleicht
besonders die kleineren
oder auch nur das Schweigen
zwischen den Worten
einige vor dem Tod schützen
wenn ich tot bin

Die Engel der Geschichte

Es ist nicht wahr
daß Geschichte
gefälscht wird
Sie hat sich großenteils
wirklich
falsch
zugetragen
Ich kann das bezeugen:
Ich war dabei

Doch leicht begreiflich
daß jetzt
die verschiedenen Seiten
verbesserte Fassungen
nachliefern
die das Geschehene
nicht
so sehr berichten
wie berichtigen wollen

Weil sie erkennen:
Wir dürfen uns nie
und nimmer
entmutigen lassen
vom schlechten
Wirklichen

Uit: The Hunting Gun (Vertaald door Michael Emmerich)

“It’s hard to believe three weeks have gone by since Mother died. People stopped coming to pay their respects yesterday, more or less, so all of a sudden the house has grown very quiet, and at last I can really feel how sad it is that Mother is gone. I’m sure you must be feeling totally worn out. I can’t thank you enough for all you did, taking care of everything from planning the service to contacting all the relatives, even troubling yourself about food for the wake—and then on top of all that, since the circumstances of Mother’s death were so unusual, going to talk so many times with the police for me. You truly thought of everything. And then of course you had to rush off immediately to Tokyo on business… I hope you don’t get sick from having exerted yourself too much.
Assuming you were able to stick to the plan you had when you left, though, you should be done with everything in Tokyo by now, and be back in Izu gazing out at the beautiful woods—that bright but somehow cold and moody landscape I know so well, that looks like a picture on a china dish. I’ve put pen to paper, in fact, hoping that you will read this letter while you are still in Izu.
I was going to try and write the sort of letter that would make you want to go out and stand in the wind with your pipe in your mouth, but I don’t have it in me. For some time now I haven’t been able to get past this point—I don’t know how many sheets of paper I’ve wasted. This isn’t how I wanted it to be. I just wanted to explain very honestly how I’m feeling right now, so that you will understand, and I’ve planned out any number of times how to do it, I practised writing this letter, but the second I take up my pen everything I want to say washes over me all at once… no, that isn’t really right, either. It’s the sorrow that pours over me, like the white crests of the waves in Ashiya on a windy day, confusing me. I’ll force myself to write, though, even so.”

Uit: Aniara

My first meeting with my Doris shines
with light added loveliness to light itself.
But the simple truth is that my first
and just a simple meeting with my Doris
is now a scene that anyone can see
every day in front of him in every hall
funneling the refugees to lift-off zones
on forced migration to the tundra globe,
in these years when Earth has come to such a pass
that for her toxic radiation she's prescribed
rest and quiet under quarantine.

Golgonder Aniara's locked, the siren gives a wail
for field-egress by the old routine
and then the gyrospin commences towing
the golgonder upwards to the zenith light
where magnetrinos blocking field-intensity
soon signal level-zero and our field-release occurs.
And like a giant pupa without weight,
vibrationless, Aniara gyrates clear
and free of interference out from Earth.
A purely routine start, no misadventures,
a normal gyromagnetic field release.
Who could imagine that this very flight
was doomed to be a space-flight, like to none,
which was to sever us from Sun and Earth,
from Mars and Venus and from Dorisvale.

Blätterfall

Der Herbstwald raschelt um mich her.
Ein unabsehbar Blättermeer
Entperlt dem Netz der Zweige.
Du aber,   dessen schweres Herz
Mitklagen will den großen Schmerz:
Sei stark,   sei stark und schweige!

Du lerne lächeln,   wenn das Laub
Dem leichteren Wind ein leichter Raub
Hinabschwankt und verschwindet.
Du weißt,   dass just Vergänglichkeit
Das Schwert,   womit der Geist der Zeit
Sich selber überwindet.

auf daß er sich ein Opfer fasse, -
und stürzt alsbald mit großem Grimm
auf einen Menschen namens Schrimm.

und hat ihn drauf bis Montag früh.

O Vrijheid!

jij vaal
vaal visioen

ontelbare levenden afgestaan?

slapen in jouw schoot niet rechten
en plichten zacht?
o vrijheid!
bén je een maar een vaal visioen
of ben je de grond,
onvervreemdbare grond
voor ons dierbaarste doen
ons meest achteloze laten?

Brief an die Gattin

Schweigende, stumme Weiten in der Tiefe.
Die Stille heult. Ich schreie. Doch wer riefe
mir Antwort zu in diesem todumhauchten
serbischen Land, des Täler blutig rauchten;
und du bist fern. Nur nachts durch meine Träume
klingt deine Stimme noch. In heiße Räume

Augen würd ich unfehlbar zu dir finden;

der Wege all zurück.

Rap in Amsterdam

liepen vlak langs me
te rappen in het Turks.

Tsjik tsji-tsjik tsjak!

O nee?

“Zes kauwgom alstublieft, meneer Ahmet”,
het openmaakten en onze toekomst lazen,

wat zou er dan in staan?

Ancient River

The Maas is the oldest river in the world.
It has flowed now for about a million years.
I never knew, they can apparently tell
the age of rivers, like that of men.

It is born in France, baptised as the Meuse,
wanders into Belgium, meanders for a while,
then winds into Holland to meet the North Sea.
These thoughts came to me in the lift.

I got off on the eleventh floor,
and three lands, 900 kms, a million years
and uncountable tonnes of cascading water
walked with me into my room.

“Ben looked round. He saw sad faces all round the room. ‘I know many of you are very sad,’ Ben told the students, ‘ButI want you to think about what you saw. Does anybody have anyquestions?’ Amy Smith put her hand up. ‘What was the place in the filmcalled?’ ‘It was called Auschwitz. The Nazis built Auschwitz to killpeople quickly.’ The room was very quiet. Amy put her hand up again. ‘Wereall the Germans Nazis?’ she asked. ‘No, most Germans were not Nazis.’ ‘Did the German people try to stop them?’ Amy asked. ‘No, most Germans didn’t try to stop the Nazis,’ Ben told her.‘Perhaps they were afraid of them.’ ‘But why were they afraid?’ ‘You must remember that life was very hard in Germany at mattime,’ said Ben. ‘There weren’t very many Nazis but they hadguns. And after 1945 most Germans said, “We didn’t know thatthey killed all those people. We didn’t know about Auschwitz.”’ Now Laurie Saunders put her hand up. ‘I can’t believe that,’she said. ‘I think they knew what happened.’ Ben was happy that his students were interested. They were notusually interested in history. ‘Only they know what they knew,’Adolf Hitler and the Nazis led Germany between 1933 and 1945”, Ben told Laurie. ‘And we don’t know why most German peopledid not try to stop the Nazis.’ It was time for lunch. The students left the room quickly. DavidCollins looked over at Laurie. ‘Come on, Laurie,’ he said. ‘Let’sgo to lunch. I’m hungry.’ ‘I’ll be down in a few minutes, David,’ said Laurie. David went off to lunch. There were only a few students left inthe room now. Laurie looked up at Mr Ross. ‘How many people did the Nazis kill?’ Laurie asked her teacher. ‘They killed more than six million Jews. And about fourmillion others.’ ‘But why did they kill them? Were all the Nazis bad people?’ Mr Ross put his books in his bag. For about a minute he wasquiet. Then he turned to Laurie. ‘I don’t know, Laurie,’ saidMr Ross. ‘I can’t answer that question.’

The Old Swimmer

I OFTEN wander on the beach
Where once, so brown of limb,
The biting air, the roaring surf
Summoned me to swim.

I see my old abundant youth
Whee combers lean and spill,
And though I taste the foam no more
Other swimmers will.

Oh, good exultant strength to meet
The arching wall of green,
To break the crystal, swirl, emerge
Dripping, taut, and clean.

To climb the moving hilly blue,
To dive in ecstasy
And feel the salty chill embrace
Arm and rib and knee.

What brave and vanished laughter then
And tingling thighs to run,
What warm and comfortable sands
Dreaming in the sun.

The crumbling water spreads in snow,
The surf is hissing still,
And though I kiss the salt no more,
Other swimmers will.

“PETRONIUS woke only about midday, and as usual greatly wearied. The evening before he had been at one of Nero's feasts, which was prolonged till late at night. For some time his health had been failing. He said himself that he woke up benumbed, as it were, and without power of collecting his thoughts. But the morning bath and careful kneading of the body by trained slaves hastened gradually the course of his slothful blood, roused him, quickened him, restored his strength, so that he issued from the elæothesium, that is, the last division of the bath, as if he had risen from the dead, with eyes gleaming from wit and gladness, rejuvenated, filled with life, exquisite, so unapproachable that Otho himself could not compare with him, and was really that which he had been called,—arbiter elegantiarum.
He visited the public baths rarely, only when some rhetor happened there who roused admiration and who was spoken of in the city, or when in the ephebias there were combats of exceptional interest. Moreover, he had in his own "insula" private baths which Celer, the famous contemporary of Severus, had extended for him, reconstructed and arranged with such uncommon taste that Nero himself acknowledged their excellence over those of the Emperor, though the imperial baths were more extensive and finished with incomparably greater luxury.
After that feast, at which he was bored by the jesting of Vatinius with Nero, Lucan, and Seneca, he took part in a diatribe as to whether woman has a soul. Rising late, he used, as was his custom, the baths. Two enormous balneatores laid him on a cypress table covered with snow-white Egyptian byssus, and with hands dipped in perfumed olive oil began to rub his shapely body; and he waited with closed eyes till the heat of the laconicum and the heat of their hands passed through him and expelled weariness."
