Willebrord
(Gekleed iin katholieke pij)
Myn welgeboren heer, de zoete Jesus zy
Met u en uwe stadt, en sta u eeuwigh by,
In allerhande nood.
Gedenck my in t gebed, voor uw autaer, ten goede.
Willebrord

Uit: The Big Bang

Uit: Will This Do? An Autobiography

“Although, as I have explained, the Waughs came from many generations of professional men - publishers, doctors, clergymen - the gulf between them and the carefree traditions of the aristocracy was as great as if he had been a fishmonger’s assistant. Even worse than this, he had already been adopted as a guest, friend, boon companion and private buffoon by families which were even richer and grander than the Herberts. This situation was not improved by the noticeable lack of sympathy between himself and 'the boy Auberon’.
Although Evelyn’s affection for the English upper classes and everything they stood for was never in doubt - this was held to be vulgar in itself - their antipathy for each other could easily be explained by the traditional jealousy between privilege and achievement. Although the Herberts were clever and moved in a brilliant circle, Evelyn Waugh was cleverer and noticed too many things to be a comfortable member of any circle.
Under the circumstances, for Laura Herbert to encourage his courtship was an act of most uncharacteristic rebelliousness. She, too, was always displeased by the Brideshead aspect, hating any form of ostentation or grandeur. 'Your dear mother,’ Evelyn Waugh would say to his children, 'is the kindest and most hospitable of women, but she has no sense of style.’
Laura’s awareness of her social superiority may well have helped to sustain her through a marriage which was not without its trials, nor without its reminders of her husband’s success in other fields. Many women (and men) feel depressed and diminished by their spouse’s success. Laura Waugh felt no such qualms, being happy enough to be left at home with her cows and children, regarding the whole circus with a profound contempt.”

A Dress Of Fire

You know, she said, they made you
a dress of fire.
Remember how Jason's wife burned in her dress?
It was Medea, she said, Medea did that to her.
You've got to be careful, she said,
they made you a dress glowing like an ember,
burning like coals.

Are you going to wear it, she said, don't wear it.
It's not the wind whistling, it's the poison
oozing.
You're not even a princess, what could you do to Medea?
Can't you tell one sound from another, she said,
it's not the wind whistling.

Remember, I told her, that time when I was six?
They shampooed my hair and I rushed out into the street.
That shampooing
trailed its scent after me like a cloud.
Then I got sick from the wind and the rain.
I didn't yet know how to read Greek tragedies,
but the scent of the perfume spread
and I was very sick.
Now I can see it was an unnatural perfume.

What will become of you, she said,
they made you a burning dress.
They made me a burning dress, I said.  I know.
So why are you just standing around, she said,
you've got to be careful.
You know what a burning dress is, don't you?

I know, I said, but not about
being careful.
One whiff of that perfume and I'm all confused.
I said to her,  No one has to agree with me,
I don't trust Greek tragedies.

But the dress, she said, the dress is on fire.
What are you saying, I shouted,
what are you saying?
I'm not wearing a dress at all,
what's burning is me.

Uit:Black, White, and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self

“My cousin Linda comes from Boston to help take care of me while my mother writes and my father works at the office. Linda has bright red hair and reddish brown skin to match. Linda sits on our tiny porch for hours, in the same chair Daddy sits in sometimes with the rifle and the dog, waiting for the Klan to come. Linda sits there and watches the cars go by. When she sees the one she wants, she stands up and points. She says she wants a black Mustang, rag top. "That car is live," I say, putting extra emphasis on live but not sounding quite as smooth as my cousin. "Rag top," I say, trying it on as we sit together on the cement porch.
Linda gets sick after a few weeks and can't get out of the extra bed in my room. She tells me secretly, late at night from underneath all our extra quilts and afghans, that she wants to stay here with us forever, that she loves Uncle Mel, wants to marry Uncle Mel. She says, "Your daddy is a good white man!" and smiles, her big teeth all white and perfect.
Linda is sick for a long time. Does she have the mumps, tonsillitis? Daddy says it's because she doesn't want to go home. Mama ends up taking care of both of us. She boils water in the yellow kettle and makes Linda honey and lemon tea, Mama's cold specialty. She tells me and Linda to lie on the brown sofa in the living room, in the sun. Linda lies one way on the corduroy couch, I the other. Before she goes back into her study, Mama covers us with the big, colorful afghan.
Linda and I stay there, whispering, and tickling each other with our toes until it is dark, listening to the click-clacking of Mama's typewriter, until we see the shadowy outline of Daddy walk through the front door.”

Uit:Eragon

“Nature had never polished a stone as smooth as this one. Its flawless surface was dark blue, except for thin veins of white that spiderwebbed across it. The stone was cool and frictionless under his fingers, like hardened silk. Oval and about a foot long, it weighed several pounds, though it felt lighter than it should have.
Eragon found the stone both beautiful and frightening. Where did it come from? Does it have a purpose? Then a more disturbing thought came to him: Was it sent here by accident, or am I meant to have it? If he had learned anything from the old stories, it was to treat magic, and those who used it, with great caution.
But what should I do with the stone? It would be tiresome to carry, and there was a chance it was dangerous. It might be better to leave it behind. A flicker of indecision ran through him, and he almost dropped it, but something stayed his hand. At the very least, it might pay for some food, he decided with a shrug, tucking the stone into his pack.
The glen was too exposed to make a safe camp, so he slipped back into the forest and spread his bedroll beneath the upturned roots of a fallen tree. After a cold dinner of bread and cheese, he wrapped himself in blankets and fell asleep, pondering what had occurred.”

Voices Of Earth

We have not heard the music of the spheres,
The song of star to star, but there are sounds
More deep than human joy and human tears,
That Nature uses in her common rounds;
The fall of streams, the cry of winds that strain
The oak, the roaring of the sea's surge, might
Of thunder breaking afar off, or rain
That falls by minutes in the summer night.
These are the voices of earth's secret soul,
Uttering the mystery from which she came.
To him who hears them grief beyond control,
Or joy inscrutable without a name,
Wakes in his heart thoughts bedded there, impearled,
Before the birth and making of the world.

Refugee Mother And Child

No Madonna and Child could touch
that picture of a mother’s tenderness
for a son she soon would have to forget.
The air was heavy with odours

of diarrhoea of unwashed children
with washed-out ribs and dried-up
bottoms struggling in laboured
steps behind blown empty bellies. Most

mothers there had long ceased
to care but not this one; she held
a ghost smile between her teeth
and in her eyes the ghost of a mother’s
pride as she combed the rust-coloured
hair left on his skull and then –

singing in her eyes – began carefully
to part it… In another life this
would have been a little daily
act of no consequence before his
breakfast and school; now she

did it like putting flowers
on a tiny grave.

Love Cycle

At dawn slowly
the sun withdraws his
long misty arms of
embrace. Happy lovers

whose exertions leave
no aftertaste nor slush
of love’s combustion; Earth
perfumed in dewdrop
fragrance wakes

to whispers of
soft-eyed light…
Later he
will wear out his temper
ploughing the vast acres
of heaven and take it

out of her in burning
darts of anger. Long
accustomed to such caprice
she waits patiently

for evening when thoughts
of another night will
restore his mellowness
and her power
over him.

Uit: Fame, Fortune and the Ant (Vertaald door Iain Macintyre)

„Once upon a time there was an ant who did not go out to seek his fortune, but literally bumped into a sugar cube. A double one. It was lying there on the hard Stone floor at the top of the steps leading to the Supreme Court. and it has never been properly explained what this sugar cube was doing there. Nor for that matter what the ant was doing there.
One thing that was widely known among ants was that this particular ant was physically extremely tough, and a hard-working, Stubborn customer. 80 straight away he began trying to shift the sugar cube and, since the stone surface was smooth, he was successful, even though it took all the strength he had.
The double sugar cube was right in the middle of the floor, and the ant pushed it across to the right, up to the wall that closed off that side.
The ant then emerged from behind the sugar cube to see what was stopping him going further. The white object. being much longer than it was broad, lay lengthwise, flush against the wall, and the am. now pushing the short side began to shift it along the wall until the huge bulk suddenly vanished.
The sugar cube was now one step lower.
The ant gazed down into a chasm. He peered around until he saw something white shimmering in its depths. Immediately he plunged down, pushed the sugar cube againSt the wall again, then along it and watched the cube vanish once more.
The process was repeated twice until the white colossus lay in the street. The ant pushed it up against the bottom step. squeezed in between the sugar and the step. and fell into an exhausted sleep. Knowing well that he would need to be wide awake and alert before he considered what he was to do with his immense cargo. Because one thing was clear to him: he would devote the rest of his life to the task. As we know, his exceptional Strength had already won him a degree of renown among the other ants; but it would be as ‘the sugar cube ant‘ that everyone would know him. and so fame and fortune would be his.“

Incubus (Fragment)

The chain uncouples, and his jacket hangs
on the peg over hers, and he's inside.

She stalls in the kitchen, putting the kettle on,
buys herself a minute looking for two
matching cups for the lime-flower tea,
not really lime but linden, heart-shaped leaves
and sticky flowers that smell of antifreeze.
She talks a wall around her, twists the string
tighter around the tea bag in her spoon.
But every conversation has to break
somewhere, and at the far end of the sofa
he sits, warming his hands around the cup
he hasn't tasted yet, and listens on
with such an exasperating show of patience
it's almost a relief to hear him ask it:
If you're not using your body right now
maybe you'd let me borrow it for a while?

It isn't what you're thinking. No, it's worse.

Why on earth did she find him so attractive
the first time she met him, propping the wall
at an awkward party, clearly trying to drink
himself into some sort of conversation?
Was it the dark uncomfortable reserve
she took upon herself to tease him out of,
asking, Are you a vampire? That depends,
he stammered, are you a virgin? No, not funny,
but why did she laugh at him? What made her think
that he needed her, that she could teach him something?
Why did she let him believe she was drunk
and needed a ride home? Why did she let him
take her shirt off, fumble around a bit
on the spare futon, passing back and forth
the warm breath of a half-hearted kiss
they kept falling asleep in the middle of?
And when he asked her, why did she not object?
I'd like to try something. I need you to trust me.

Uit: Yes Man

“We'd been standing, me and this man, waiting for the Central Line train to take us from Holborn to the East End, when the announcement had spluttered and stuttered its way over the tannoy. It was a security alert. We were being asked to leave. Our journeys home had just gained an hour. We'd be shunted and squeezed onto buses outside and driven home, very slowly during rush hour, on a rainy, rainy London night.
The man and I had raised our eyebrows at each other and smiled in a "what's the world coming to" way, but other than that we didn't say a word to each other. We'd simply started to walk up the stairs and out of the station, like the good, old-fashioned, obedient British citizens we were.
"Nice weather for this!" said the man as we jogged through a slanting rain and flashed our travel cards at the bus driver. I ha-ha'ed, probably a little too ha-hard, and we joined the seething masses on board the bus.
After ten minutes and three stops, we found seats for ourselves, and after another ten, we had begun to chat.
"Where are you headed?" I'd asked.
"Aldgate," he'd replied.
The man, as it turned out, was a teacher.
And he was about to teach me.
"So, what did he teach you?" said Ian.
"I'll tell you in a minute."
"Tell me now. I want to know what kind of wisdom he imparted on you that's caused you to summon me here."
"I didn't 'summon' you here."
"You sent me an e-mail saying that your entire life had changed and that you wanted to meet up."
