In The Goddess' Name I Summon You

Oil on limbs,
maybe a rancid smell
as on the chapel's
oil-press here,
as on the rough pores
of the unturning stone.

Oil on hair
wreathed in rope
and maybe other scents
unknown to us
poor and rich
and statuettes offering
small breasts with their fingers.

Oil in the sun
the leaves shuddered
when the stranger stopped
and the silence weighed
between the knees.
The coins fell:
‘In the goddess's name I summon you...'

Oil on the shoulders
and the flexing waist
legs grass-dappled,
and that wound in the sun
as the bell rang for vespers
as I spoke in the churchyard
with a crippled man.

Flowers of the rock

Flowers of the rock facing the green sea
with veins that reminded me of other loves
glowing in the slow fine rain,
flowers of the rock, figures
that came when no one spoke and spoke to me
that let me touch them after the silence
among pine-trees, oleanders, and plane-trees.

Carbon Paper

Someone overnight sticks a gigantic
piece of carbon paper on my door.
Everything I am thinking immediately
comes through on the Other side of the wall.

Inquisitive people from all over the place
come in throngs, I hear the soles of their shoes
lift up the stairs to my apartment
and. leaving,
put them down again.

They are birds of every species,
moon farm dogs,
transitions, forest aisles and
old acacias that
suffer from insomnia.

They put on spectacles and
read me, are moved or
threaten me with their fists, it
depends, for I have a
clear idea of it all.

Only about my soul
I know nothing.
About my soul that perpetually
slides away from me between days,
like a cake of soap
in the bath.

The View From An Attic Window

Among the high-branching, leafless boughs
Above the roof-peaks of the town,
Snowflakes unnumberably come down.

I watched out of the attic window
The laced sway of family trees,
Intricate genealogies

Whose strict, reserved gentility,
Trembling, impossible to bow,
Received the appalling fall of snow.

All during Sunday afternoon,
Not storming, but befittingly,
Out of a still, grey, devout sky,

The snowflakes fell, until all shapes
Went under, and thickening, drunken lines
Cobwebbed the sleep of solemn pines.

Up in the attic, among many things
Inherited and out of style,
I cried, then fell asleep awhile,

Waking at night now, as the snow-
flakes from darkness to darkness go
Past yellow lights in the street below.

2
I cried because life is hopeless and beautiful.
And like a child I cried myself to sleep
High in the head of the house, feeling the hull
Beneath me pitch and roll among the steep
Mountains and valleys of the many years
That brought me to tears.

Down in the cellar, furnace and washing machine,
Pump, fuse-box, water heater, work their hearts
Out at my life, which narrowly runs between
Them and this cemetery of spare parts
For discontinued men, whose hats and canes
Are my rich remains.

And women, their portraits and wedding gowns
Stacked in the corners, brooding in wooden trunks;
And children’s rattles, books about lions and clowns;
And headless, hanging dresses swayed like drunks
Whenever a living footstep shakes the floor;
I mention no more;

But what I thought today, that made me cry,
Is this, that we live in two kinds of thing:
The powerful trees, thrusting into the sky
Their black patience, are one, and that branching
Relation teaches how we endure and grow;
The other is the snow,

Falling in a white chaos from the sky,
As many as the sands of all the seas,
As all the men who died or who will die,
As stars in heaven, as leaves of all the trees;
As Abraham was promised of his seed;
Generations bleed,

Till I, high in the tower of my time
Among familiar ruins, began to cry
For accident, sickness, justice, war and crime,
Because all died, because I had to die.
The snow fell, the trees stood, the promise kept,
And a child I slept.

Untimely Meditations

CHAPTER 1
Time is money. Money is time.
So, I keep seven o’clock in the
bank and gain interest in the
hour of God.  I’m saving to buy
my freedom. God grant me wings.
I’m too fly not to fly. Eye sore
to look at humans without wings.
So, I soar. And find tickle in the
feather of my wings. Flying
hysterically over land. Numerically,
I am seven mountains higher than
the valley of death, seven dimensions
deeper than dimensions of breath.

CHAPTER 2
The fiery sun of my passions
evaporates the love lakes of my
soul, clouds my thoughts and
rains you into existence. As I take
flights on bolts of lightening.
Claiming chaos as my concubine
and you as my me. I of the storm.
You of the sea. We of the moon.
Land of the free. What have I done
to deserve this? Am I happy?

The Three Black Crows

Two honest tradesmen meeting in the Strand,
One took the other briskly by the hand;
"Hark ye," said he, "'tis an odd story this
About the crows!" — "I don't know what it is,"
Replied his friend. — "No! I'm surprised at that;
Where I come from, it is the common chat;
But you shall hear an odd affair indeed!
And that it happen'd they are all agreed;
Not to detain you from a thing so strange,
A gentleman, who lives not far from 'Change,
This week, in short, as all the Alley knows,
Taking a vomit, threw up Three Black Crows!"
  "Impossible!" —— "Nay, but 'tis really true;
I had it from good hands, and so may you." ——
"From whose I pray?" —— So, having named the man,
Straight to enquire, his curious comrade ran.
"Sir did you tell?" —— relating the affair.
"Yes sir, I did; and, if 'tis worth your care,
'Twas Mr." — such a one — "who told it me;
But, by the bye, 'twas Two black crows, not Three!"
Resolved to trace so wondrous an event,
Quick to the third the virtuoso went.
"Sir," — and so forth. — "Why, yes; the thing is fact,
Though in regard to number not exact.
It was not Two black crows, 'twas only One;
The truth of that you may depend upon;
The gentleman himself told me the case."—
"Where may I find him?" — "Why in" — such a place.
Away he went, and having found him out,
"Sir, be so good as to resolve a doubt."——
Then to his last informant he referr'd,
And begg'd to know, if true what he had heard:
"Did you, sir, throw up a black crow?" — "Not I!"—
"Bless me! — how people propagate a lie!
Black crows have been thrown up, Three, Two, and One:
And here, I find, all comes at last to None!
Did you say nothing of a crow at all?"——
"Crow — crow — perhaps I might; now I recall
The matter over." — "And pray, sir, what was't?"
"Why, I was horrid sick, and at the last
I did throw up, and told my neighbour so,
Something that was —— as black sir, as a crow."

The Pylons

The secret of these hills was stone, and cottages
Of that stone made,
And crumbling roads
That turned on sudden hidden villages

Now over these small hills, they have built the concrete
That trails black wire
Pylons, those pillars
Bare like nude giant girls that have no secret-

The valley with its gilt and evening look
And the green chestnut
Of customary root,
Are mocked dry like the parched bed of a brook-

But far above and far as sight endures
Like whips of anger
With lightning's danger
There runs the quick perspective of the future-

This dwarfs our emerald country by its trek
So tall with prophecy
Dreaming of cities
Where ofien clouds shall lean their swan-white neck.

A footnote to Marx’s chapter “The working day”

“Heard say that four times four is eight
“And the king is the man what has all the gold.”
“Our king is a queen and her son’s a princess
“And they live in a palace called London, I’m told."

“Heard say that a man called God who’s a dog
“Made the world with us in it,” “And then I’ve heard
“There came a great flood and the world was all drownded
“Except for one man, and he was a bird.”

“So perhaps all the maple are dead, and we’re birds
“Shut in steel cages by the devil who’s good,
“Like the miners in their pit cages
“And us in our chimneys to climb, as we should.”

Farewell To My Student

For our farewell. we went down to the foot-path
Circling the lake. You stood there, looking up at
White egrets nesting in high branches.
And I, apart, stood silent. searching for
Images to recall this moment.
The first, I thought. must be that pine tree
Which, with slashed bark, climbs vertically
Across the lines of waves beyond.
Second. your face, a bronze medallion,
Greek or Roman, against the lake.
Perhaps Bellini
Delved from antiquity such an image
Of a twenty-year-old Triton lifting up a conch
Against a background of blown waves.
And Seurat, centuries later, in the profile
Of a holidaying boy, against the Seine.
And then you turned to me and said
With glance a third thing to remember:
“You are gone already, your thoughts are far from here
Three thousand miles away,
Where you will be tomorrow. And I
Here. remembering today.”

Then ten years passed till, today. i write these lines.

Hij zei iets in de zin van: ‘Here you take a left, cross the bridges, continue, continue, straight ahead till you can’t go further, than you go right and you will see the market.’

Adam”s Apple

Her skin is smooth
as peach or appleblossom
-or a snakeskin.

The snake’s fangs gleam,
the fruit glistens
as warmly in her palm

as ever it shone
on the holy tree.
He savours it

so slowly,
it sticks in
our throat forever.

Pilgrims

A warm summer evening, near Multyfarnham.
Two young pilgrims, on their way home
From the all-night vigil of the Mission
Short-cut down the railway lines.
Near dawn, they drop their shriven heads down
On the rails. To die like Elizabethans,
Two torsos yielding two bright crowns.

Pause. Sie könne nicht weinen. Pause. Auf Englisch klingt das fantastisch.”

„These are the caps from the bottles of Scarpia’s Bitter Black Ale that you and I drank in Al’s backyard that night. I can see the stars bright and prickly and our breathing steamy in the cold, you in your team jacket and me in that cardigan of Al’s I always borrow at his house.
He had it waiting, clean and folded, when I went upstairs with him to give him his present before the guests arrived.
“I told you I didn’t want a present,” Al said. “The party was enough I told you, without the obligatory-”
“It’s not obligatory,” I said, having used the same vocabulary flash cards with Al when we were freshmen. “I found something. It’s perfect. Open it.”
He took the bag from me, nervous.
“Come on, happy birthday.”
“What is it?”
“Your heart’s desire. I hope. Open it. You’re driving me crazy.”
Rustle rustle rip, and he sort of gasped. It was very satisfying.
“Where did you find this?”
“Does it not,” I said, “I mean exactly, look like what the guy wears in the party scene in Una settimana straordinaria?”
He smiled into the slender box. It was a necktie, dark green with modern diamond shapes stitched into it in a line. It’d been in my sock drawer for months, waiting. “Take it out,” I said. “Wear it tonight.
Does it not, exactly?”
“When he gets out of the Porcini XL 10,” he said, but he was looking at me.
“Your absolute favorite scene in any movie. I hope you love it.”

Uit: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

““Scarcely were the refugees settled behind the security of the “permanent Indian frontier” when soldiers began marching westward through the Indian country. The white men of the United States—who talked so much of peace but rarely seemed to practice it—were marching to war with the white men who had conquered the Indians of Mexico. When the war with Mexico ended in 1847, the United States took possession of a vast expanse of territory reaching from Texas to California. All of it was west of the “permanent Indian frontier.”
In 1848 gold was discovered in California. Within a few months, fortune-seeking easterners by the thousands were crossing the Indian Territory. Indians who lived or hunted along the Santa Fe and Oregon trails had grown accustomed to seeing an occasional wagon train licensed for traders, trappers, or missionaries. Now suddenly the trails were filled with wagons, and the wagons were filled with white people. Most of them were bound for California gold, but some turned southwest for New Mexico or northwest for the Oregon country.
To justify these breaches of the “permanent Indian frontier,” the policy makers in Washington invented Manifest Destiny, a term which lifted land hunger to a lofty plane. The Europeans and their descendants were ordained by destiny to rule all of America. They were the dominant race and therefore responsible for the Indians—along with their lands, their forests, and their mineral wealth. Only the New Englanders, who had destroyed or driven out all their Indians, spoke against Manifest Destiny.
In 1850, although none of the Modocs, Mohaves, Paiutes, Shastas, Yumas, or a hundred other lesser-known tribes along the Pacific Coast were consulted on the matter, California became the thirty-first state of the Union. In the mountains of Colorado gold was discovered, and new hordes of prospectors swarmed across the Plains.”

Uit:A Brief History of Mexico (Vertaald door César Tort)

“The absurd idea never crossed the mind of Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson, or any of the fathers of the Yankee Independence that a redskin should be the President or that blacks should occupy positions held by the English. What we should have done is to declare that all the Spanish residents in Mexico were to be treated like Mexicans.
The idea that independence would tend to devolve power to the Indian was not an Indian idea. The emancipation, as already said over and over again, was neither devised nor consummated by the Indians. The idea of stirring up the Indians appears in the leaders of the emancipation who had not found positive reception for their plans from the educated classes. They resorted to the dangerous decision of starting a caste war because they were unable to carry out a war of emancipation. Not even Bolívar escapes this charge, since in Colombia he stirred up blacks against the whites in order to recruit his armies. For the people of the North, such procedures would have seemed insane, as they were.
It was therefore a crime: stirring up the underdogs against the top brass without any social improvement, merely to have soldiers. In fact, the idea of putting the Indian in front of the insurrection was an English idea. One of the first people to speak of confederating the Hispanic continent under the rule of a descendant of the Incas was Miranda. This idea was given to Miranda by the two biggest enemies of the Spanish in America, namely the French and the English.”
