Tumbleweeds

Rolling nests of the prairie,
prickered and denuded and dead,
clutching at clumps, skipping across
asphalt, whole shrubs ripped out
and flung, and clinging together
like herds racing over acres.
I'd only ever seen them

in Spaghetti Westerns tumbling
quaintly across the painted backdrop—
props blown by big fans and collecting
off-camera against some studio wall.
But here, in Nebraska, they roll
for miles unless a fence catches them.
All day they crunched beneath

my wheels like the delicate skeletons
of small animals. One clutched the grille
and flapped there like a giant bird.
And I felt I could join them, easily,
as stripped as I am, as thin as I've become,
as determined as I am to roll onward.
But even as I dodged them, speeding up

or slowing down, I found myself
feeling satisfied when one met me head-on,
the tread turning branches to chafe.
I relished the champ of their blanched
bodies as my machine ground them to dust,
here where chance seemed perfectly arrayed
and where, once, the deer and antelope played.

The Flight Of The Moon

I was singing on the toilet
when the moon
came rolling in

bare naked
on a bicycle
racing through a forest of metaphor
the moon came to meet me.

Along the road outside
a beautiful woman walks by, brushing her teeth.
On a park bench
a man in a maternity dress is drinking apple juice.
At the end of the century health is always in full phase.

A hole in the sky drops open.
Distress like the moon, a gloom like the moon are gone
and the likes
fly brightly round and round that hole.

The deep folds of the abyss smooth.
Across the now-blank suffering face
poets start to skate.

The moon... mine... another.

Moscow

Don’t give a bouquet to the woman.
Repairing the subway escalator, her fingertips clear to the bone with machine oil.
The motion of the precision joints
ascends in the brains of the commuters.

In her damp hands
the escalator tugged once
and like a serpent      began to rise.
She stood up –
and looked up.

Far beyond the flashing shoes of
the clattering gate
a god was idly pissing.

« Usually Doc Wallace says, “Everybody in one piece, huh?” And we’re always quick to answer. He comes into the locker room just grinning, no matter if we've won or lost, with that old black leather medical bag in his hand. And all of us, all the team, we’re scattered around old steel lockers or the wood benches. We’re still sweaty from the game, geared up or let down, with all our pads and jerseys and personal stuff thrown around.
The Claude Tigers. There’s about twenty of us. We got red and black uniforms. Jesus, we’re a mixed bag. Even though we got more white than most, we still got several black players and three Mexican brothers. No matter though. There’s no shit between any of us because, one, it’s stupid, and, two, we don’t win when we’re not all together. l make sure that’s clear. That’s my role in a way. Make sure everyone’s pumped. Make sure we’re together like a swarm of ants or something like that, like a bunch of monkeys or something. When we win, we all just yell and laugh and stuff, but when we lose, we all feel it together and no one says anything for a long time.
Either way, Doc always wanders the locker room after a game kind of checking us over, looking in our eyes for a concussion or something, sometimes pressing on bones here and there. What I find funny about Doc is his long gray hair, which makes him appear like some old hippie or something. We kid him about that and he takes it fine because that’s the kind of man he is, real lively. Some might say jovial, I guess. Sometimes I flash him the peace sign with my fingers and he just shakes his head and smiles.
Tonight Doc goes first to one of our linemen, Harvey, who’s real big and round but not what I’d call fat. Harvey is undressed from the waist up. He’s got sweat and dirt on his face because he hasn’t showered yet. Sometimes hedon’t. Three fingers on one hand are taped together with some raggedy bandage, but with his other hand he’s busy stuffing his jaw full of Red Man. Doc just stares at him for a bit, shaking his head at the amount of chew Harvey is putting in his mouth, then he points at Harvey’s wrapped hand. “Bothering you any?”

Uit: Roma

“She traveled back and forth, up and down the river path. No single place was home. She liked the seaside, where there was always fish to eat, and the gentle lapping of the waves lulled her to sleep at night. She was less fond of the foothills, where the path grew steep, the nights could be cold, and views of great distances made her dizzy. She felt uneasy in the villages, and was often shy around strangers. The path itself was where she felt most at home. She loved the smell of the river on a hot day, and the croaking of frogs at night. Vines grew amid the lush foliage along the river, with berries that were good to eat. Even on the hottest day, sundown brought a cool breeze off the water, which sighed and sang amid the reeds and tall grasses.
Of all the places along the path, the area they were approaching, with the island in the river, was Lara’s favorite.
The terrain along this stretch of the river was mostly flat, but in the immediate vicinity of the island, the land on the sunrise side was like a rumpled cloth, with hills and ridges and valleys. Among Lara’s people, there was a wooden baby’s crib, suitable for strapping to a cart, that had been passed down for generations. The island was shaped like that crib, longer than it was wide and pointed at the upriver end, where the flow had eroded both banks. The island was like a crib, and the group of hills on the sunrise side of the river were like old women mantled in heavy cloaks gathered to have a look at the baby in the crib—that was how Lara’s father had once described the lay of the land.
Larth spoke like that all the time, conjuring images of giants and monsters in the landscape. He could perceive the spirits, called numina, that dwelled in rocks and trees. Sometimes he could speak to them and hear what they had to say. The river was his oldest friend and told him where the fishing would be best. From whispers in the wind he could foretell the next day’s weather. Because of such skills, Larth was the leader of the group.
“We’re close to the island, aren’t we, Papa?” said Lara.“

Uit: Les Thibault, I, Le pénitencier

March

This is the tomboy month of all the year,
March, who comes shouting o'er the winter hills,
Waking the world with laughter, as she wills,
Or wild halloos, a windflower in her ear.
She stops a moment by the half-thawed mere
And whistles to the wind, and straightway shrills
The hyla's song, and hoods of daffodils
Crowd golden round her, leaning their heads to hear.
Then through the woods, that drip with all their eaves,
Her mad hair blown about her, loud she goes
Singing and calling to the naked trees;
And straight the oilets of the little leaves
Open their eyes in wonder, rows on rows,
And the first bluebird bugles to the breeze.

Forgetfulness

The name of the author is the first to go
followed obediently by the title, the plot,
the heartbreaking conclusion, the entire novel
which suddenly becomes one you have never read,
never even heard of,

as if, one by one, the memories you used to harbor
decided to retire to the southern hemisphere of the brain,
to a little fishing village where there are no phones.

Long ago you kissed the names of the nine Muses goodbye
and watched the quadratic equation pack its bag,
and even now as you memorize the order of the planets,

something else is slipping away, a state flower perhaps,
the address of an uncle, the capital of Paraguay.

Whatever it is you are struggling to remember,
it is not poised on the tip of your tongue,
not even lurking in some obscure corner of your spleen.

It has floated away down a dark mythological river
whose name begins with an L as far as you can recall,
well on your own way to oblivion where you will join those
who have even forgotten how to swim and how to ride a bicycle.

No wonder you rise in the middle of the night
to look up the date of a famous battle in a book on war.
No wonder the moon in the window seems to have drifted
out of a love poem that you used to know by heart.

By A Swimming Pool Outside Syracusa

All afternoon I have been struggling to communicate in Italian with Roberto and Giuseppe,
who have begun to resemble the two male characters in my Italian for Beginners,
the ones who are always shopping or inquiring about the times of trains,
and now I can hardly speak or write English.

Voilà pourquoi, moi, Jeanne, je me suis tue.

The body is running down

The body is running down, drum beats
behind a dozen curtains
the clash of shield on shield
from time to time even lancers appear

I don't keep a look out for heavily-pleated robes

Mounted messengers, porters, gate-keepers?
Why this urgent rhythm?
Why this dull thudding?
Why this desertion
from rabbit-hutch to a passage
wide enough for a team of four?

Little hope of answers
but the spirit is defiant

Renaissance

De son corps de Titan afi’ronteur de nuages;

Uit: We Were a Handful (Vertaald door Mark Corner)

“I saw how Eddie Kemlink was sitting on a general, and twisting his nose as hard as he could and this general was puflîng and panting and yelling: “Comrades-in-arms! Someone somewhere help me!
This rascal could leave a man maimed!” and as I was running around I said to him: “It’s your own fault, why can’t you leave us be?” and the general replied loftily: “What business is it of yours? It’s not as if you’re the one twisting my nose, is it?]ust clear out of here before I find something to clobber you with!” 1 wanted to answer him back, but I was still being chased by the verger.
And the yelling and the hullabaloo got louder and louder, with objects flying in all directions in the terrible mayhem all around. Later on all the lads said that it had been the best ding-dong they’d ever seen. And as if all this had been nothing to speak about - a troupe of monkeys swarmed into the church and joined the fray. In the midst of this I noticed Jumbo socking the maharajah’s elephant on the back with his trunk and saying: “I’m out to get you, you scoundrel,” and laughing wildly while the maharajah’s elephant socked Jumbo across the back with his trunk in return and said: “I’ll beat you black and blue, youjackass, you’ll be seeing stars,” and so they set about each other with a vengeance.
A large tiger, one that was already a bit long in the tooth, came bounding in and laughed saying: “This looks like fun, I’d like to know who’ll swap a few punches with me.” The words were hardly out of his mouth before another tiger jumped on his back and they were rolling about on the carpet and roaring their heads off. Now the Indian rock snake had to get in on the act and it began beating one of the ministers of state with its tail. It was like being thrashed with a bull whip and so the minister squealed horribly and then seized hold of a revolver and shot the snake in the stomach and the serpent shrieked in a piteous voice: “Oh gentlemen, he has shot me dead as a dodo and all I did was give him a few light strokes.”

Dies irae

hoort men het Miserere klagen:
ach! wees der ziel genadig, Heer:

Dies irae... wil niet versagen,
daagt eens de kwaadste van de dagen,
arm hert, dat angstig vraagt: wanneer?
