Heilige Drie-eenheid door El Greco, 1577

Am ersten Sonntage nach Pfingsten
(Dreifaltigkeit)

In deinem Tempel will sich's regen,
Wo ich als deine Magd erschien,
Und unter deines Priesters Segen
Fühl' ich es leise Nahrung ziehn.
Wenn eine teure Mutterhand
Das Kreuz mir zeichnet auf die Stirne,
Dann zuckt's lebendig im Gehirne
Und meine Sinne stehn in Brand.

Ja selbst zu Nacht, wenn alle schlafen
Und über mich die Angst sich legt,
In der Gedanken öden Hafen
Der Zweifel seine Flagge trägt:
Wie eine Phosphorpflanze noch
Fühl' ich es warm und leuchtend schwellen,
Und über die verstörten Wellen
Legt sich ein leiser Schimmer doch.

Und muß mir zum Gericht gereichen
Die Lebenspflanze mir gesellt,
Die ich versäumte sondergleichen,
Und dürrem Holze gleichgestellt:[638]
So ist sie in der Sünden Bann,
Des Geistes schwindelnden Getrieben,
Mein heimlich Kleinod doch geblieben
Und angstvoll hangt mein Herz daran.

Ob ich vor deiner Geißel zage,
Nichts kömmt doch dem Bewußtsein gleich,
Daß dennoch ich dein Zeichen trage
Und blute unter deinem Streich.
Fluch allem, was von dir mich stößt!
Dein will ich sein, von dir nur stammen;
Viel lieber sollst du mich verdammen,
Als daß ein andrer mich erlöst.

Een ding gestand doen is

Een ding gestand doen is
jezelf beliegen. Van een pop, een beeld,,
een torso luidt de saaie waarheid dat
ze dood zijn. Al wat meer lijkt
is verguldsel uit de smidse

van je ogen en verfraaiing door je
geest vol kinderleugens. Maar soms -
het duurt niet lang, je moet jezelf
verschalken - maak je geen onderscheid

meer tussen schijngestalten en
het ware beeld. IK wordt de ander,

poppen krijgen lichaamswarmte, torso's
worden vormen van herinnering.
Schijn is de kleurrijkste waarheid -
even daar te zijn is heerlijk.

Henry Moore in Palais Auersperg

Een duif

bereikt een tak. Het klinkt
als knarsende scharnieren,

hangt in de zilveren lucht
en is weer uitgewist.

Klimop bekleedt verweerde stammen.
De cirkel van kastanjes, langzaam uit

elkaar gehaald, legt op het grasperk
nog de handen van zijn schaduw,

bedekt het met een zoete regen
van genade, van gebladerte.

En midden in de tuin ligt
wit en vol van rust een marmeren

gewricht.

Uit: The Return of Sherlock Holmes

"You remember that a stonemason, named Slater, walking from Forest Row about one o'clock in the morning -- two days before the murder -- stopped as he passed the grounds and looked at the square of light still shining among the trees. He swears that the shadow of a man's head turned sideways was clearly visible on the blind, and that this shadow was certainly not that of Peter Carey, whom he knew well. It was that of a bearded man, but the beard was short and bristled forward in a way very different from that of the captain. So he says, but he had been two hours in the public-house, and it is some distance from the road to the window. Besides, this refers to the Monday, and the crime was done upon the Wednesday.
On the Tuesday, Peter Carey was in one of his blackest moods, flushed with drink and as savage as a dangerous wild beast. He roamed about the house, and the women ran for it when they heard him coming. Late in the evening, he went down to his own hut. About two o'clock the following morning, his daughter, who slept with her window open, heard a most fearful yell from that direction, but it was no unusual thing for him to bawl and shout when he was in drink, so no notice was taken. On rising at seven, one of the maids noticed that the door of the hut was open, but so great was the terror which the man caused that it was midday before anyone would venture down to see what had become of him. Peeping into the open door, they saw a sight which sent them flying, with white faces, into the village. Within an hour, I was on the spot and had taken over the case. “

The Hummingbird's Prayer

In your marvel, the heavens orbit
The years are long
But how cautious are you!
You that attach the soul to life
Love is yours, eternity is yours!

Annihilation! To those that know you not
O people! O spirit of eternity
Power is yours, eternity is yours!

The night is your solution
As the morning unravels
And the thirsty sea is weary
The arrow strayed
Shot the thirsty
You're the decent, but we inquire

Judas betrayed, but how many Judases sold Christ?
Judas could not last forever
And you cannot wound a wounded country
A million Judases betrayed the promise and were defeated
You are all that remains
In the fields
And your sickle
Brushed the wheat from above Christ's blood
And you are the wounded
The doctors come to ask
How grand!
Who fathered you?!
Who bore you?!
How noble!
O people, you are the heartbeat of existence.
Eternity is yours
Sovereignty is yours
Power is yours
Power is yours

‘Lelijke jongen toch,’ roept zij kwaad, ‘waar kom ie vandaan?’
‘Albert, toe nou! 't Is je tied, heur!’
‘Och ja, mense, ik kom al jà!’

Auferstanden aus Ruinen
(Hymne der DDR)

Auferstanden aus Ruinen
und der Zukunft zugewandt,
laß uns dir zum Guten dienen,
Deutschland, einig, Vaterland.
Alte Not gilt es zu zwingen,
und wir zwingen sie vereint,
denn es wird uns doch gelingen,
daß die Sonne schön wie nie
über Deutschland scheint.

Glück und Friede sei beschieden
Deutschland, unserm Vaterland.
Alle Welt sehnt sich nach Frieden,
reicht den Völkern eure Hand.
Wenn wir brüderlich uns einen,
schlagen wir des Volkes Feind.
Laßt das Licht des Friedens scheinen,
daß nie eine Mutter mehr
ihren Sohn beweint.

Laßt uns Pflügen, laßt uns bauen,
lernt und schafft wie nie zuvor,
und der eignen Kraft vertrauend,
steigt ein frei Geschlecht empor.
Deutsche Jugend, bestes Streben
unsres Volks in dir vereint,
wirst du Deutschlands neues Leben,
und die Sonne schön wie nie
über Deutschland scheint.

Santa Margherita

Het terras van onze villa
is opgenomen in het lila
van de baai. Rapallo en Sestri
liggen aan de voet der bergen
te trillen in de zon. Palmen

Espagne

Mon doux pays des Espagnes
Qui voudrait fuir ton beau ciel,
Tes cités et tes montagnes,
Et ton printemps éternel ?

Ton air pur qui nous enivre,
Tes jours, moins beaux que tes nuits,
Tes champs, où Dieu voudrait vivre
S'il quittait son paradis.

Autrefois ta souveraine,
L'Arabie, en te fuyant,
Laissa sur ton front de reine
Sa couronne d'Orient !

Un écho redit encore
A ton rivage enchanté
L'antique refrain du Maure :
Gloire, amour et liberté !

Une allée du Luxembourg

Elle a passé, la jeune fille
Vive et preste comme un oiseau
À la main une fleur qui brille,
À la bouche un refrain nouveau.

C'est peut-être la seule au monde
Dont le coeur au mien répondrait,
Qui venant dans ma nuit profonde
D'un seul regard l'éclaircirait !

Mais non, - ma jeunesse est finie ...
Adieu, doux rayon qui m'as lui, -
Parfum, jeune fille, harmonie...
Le bonheur passait, - il a fui !

Uit: Nietzsche’s Zarathustra

“You cannot read a serious article in the Nazi press without stumbling over their precious „Weltanschauung“, their so-called philosophy. Whatever they do, be it the most stupid, the most brutal, the most bestial thing – they profess to do it on philosophical grounds.
How is this philosophy just a sham, invented by crooks and imposters? Undoubtedly that is true in many cases. But it is too comfortable an explanation to be altogether satisfactory. It won’t do. This philosophy is worth looking at, with the cool detachment of an historian or scientist. And here Nietzsche comes in, the world-famous German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who is now being claimed by the Nazis, and who was in fact about as much of a Nazi as you and I. It is about him, and about his book „Thus Spake Zarathustra „ I talk to you today. It is the story of one of the most fateful misrepresentations in the history of the human mind.
Who was this man Nietzsche? [...]
That book – „Thus Spake Zarathustra“ is the full title, – is a strange work, the strangest mixture of poetry, prose, fiction, philosophy. Just this mixture made it so much more impressive to the large public than Nietzsche’s more important strictly philosophical works. I think I had better give you just a taste of it; of its beginning. Zarathustra goes into the mountains, to stay there in solitude for ten years, his only companions being his eagle and his serpent. Then he decides toreturn to me, to impart unto them his wisdom. As he arrives in the nearest town he finds the people gathered in the market place, waiting for a rope dancer’s performance. And now, listen; I have to concentrate it a bit. „And thus spake Zarathustra unto the folk: I teach you the man that is to be, the Superman: Man is something that is to be surpassed. What have ye done to surpass him? All beings hitherto have created something higher than themselves; and you desire the ebb of that great tide, and would rather relapse into the Beast than surpass Man? The Superman is the meaning of the earth. I conjure you, my brethren, remain true to the earth, and do not believe those who speak unto you of hopes beyond this earth. Thus spake Zarathustra. All the folk laughed at him however and became impatient for the rope dancer, who began his performance.“

Pourquoi resteraient-ils couverts

Le franc amour flambe et s'étage ;
Le faune halète aux bois verts
Et l'ermite en son ermitage.
Aimons ! plus de baguenaudage !
Les pudeurs, le refus subtil
Des flirts et du marivaudage,
Quitte tout, ma mie, en avril !

ENVOI

Lijken uw voet ontsproten in ’t vruchtbaar verband

Ten hoog’ren hemel, war hoog boven ’t karnen

want man èn vrouw streven op Golgotha
en niemand kan hun laatste vrees doorgronden.

Maria Semple

Semple publiceerde de romans zijn “This One is Mine” (2008), “Where'd You Go, Bernadette” (2012), en “Today will be Different” (2016).

Uit: This One Is Mine

“David stood at the sink, a pine forest to his left, the Pacific Ocean to his right, and cursed the morning sun. It beat through the skylight and smashed into the mirror, making it all but impossible to shave without squinting. He had lived in Los Angeles long enough to lose track of the seasons, so it took glancing up at CNBC and seeing live images of people snowshoeing down Madison Avenue for it to register: it was the middle of winter. And he determined that all day, no matter how bad things got, at least he’d be grateful for the weather.
His pool shimmered. Stone Canyon Reservoir shimmered. The ocean shimmered. He cocked his head and flicked his wrist, skipping an imaginary stone from the pool to the reservoir. It split some Westwood high- rises, then landed in the Santa Monica Bay.
He wound up again—this time to clear Catalina—then stopped.
There was a furry . . . brown . . . thing floating in the Jacuzzi. “Honey!” He walked into the bedroom. “There’s something in the Jacuzzi.” He paused, waiting for the daylight in his eyes to fade.
His wife was in bed, her back to him, her hair seeping from under the pillow she’d taken to putting over her head at night. “Ma- ma, Ma- ma.” A squawk erupted from the baby monitor.
There was a cough, then a bleat.
But Violet didn’t move. What was her plan? Who did she think was going to get the baby? Was a standoff really so necessary that Violet would let Dot cry like this? Jesus Christ. David marched by the bed, skirting the rug so his bare heels struck the hardwood.
“Aggh.” Violet pulled the pillow off her head. And there they were, the reason he fell in love with her almost twenty years ago in front of the Murray Hill Cinema: the violets tattooed behind her ear.
David’s dog walker, a friend of Violet’s from Barnard, had set them up. David managed two bands at the time — big ones, but still, only two. He’d been told Violet worked for a legendary theater producer and was the daughter of some obscure intellectual he’d never heard of. The plan was to meet half an hour before Full Metal Jacket. David arrived on time, but the movie had already sold out. He spotted Violet — she had said she’d be the one wearing red plastic sandals — sitting on the sidewalk in the ticket holders’ line, engrossed in the New York Times, and listening to a Walkman. Two movie tickets were tucked under her leg. She wasn’t a knockout, but wasn’t fat either, and had a face you wanted to look into. She turned the page of the business section and folded it, then folded it again. An artsy chick who read the business section? Who was responsible enough to have arrived early and bought tickets?"

Amy Waldman

Uit: The Submission

"The names," Claire said. "What about the names?"
"They're a record, not a gesture," the sculptor replied. Ariana's words brought nods from the other artists, the critic, and the two purveyors of public art arrayed along the dining table, united beneath her sway. She was the jury's most famous figure, its dominant personality, Claire's biggest problem.
Ariana had seated herself at the head of the table, as if she were presiding. For the previous four months they had deliberated at a table that had no head, being round. It was in an office suite high above the gouged earth, and there the other jurors had deferred to the widow's desire to sit with her back to the window, so that the charnel ground below was only a gray blur when Claire walked to her chair. But tonight the jury was gathered, for its last arguments, at Gracie Mansion's long table. Ariana, without consultation or, it appeared, compunction, had taken pride of place, giving notice of her intent to prevail.
"The names of the dead are expected; required, in fact, by the competition rules," she continued. For such a scouring woman, her voice was honeyed. "In the right memorial, the names won't be the source of the emotion."
"They will for me," Claire said tightly, taking some satisfaction in the downcast eyes and guilty looks along the table. They'd all lost, of course--lost the sense that their nation was invulnerable; lost their city's most recognizable icons; maybe lost friends or acquaintances. But only she had lost her husband.
She wasn't above reminding them of that tonight, when they would at last settle on the memorial. They had winnowed five thousand entries, all anonymous, down to two. The final pruning should have beeneasy. But after three hours of talk, two rounds of voting, and too much wine from the mayor's private reserve, the conversation had turned ragged, snappish, repetitive. The Garden was too beautiful, Ariana and the other artists kept saying of Claire's choice. They saw for a living, yet when it came to the Garden they wouldn't see what she saw.”
