Depression

So proudly she came into the subway car
all who were not reading their newspapers saw
the head high and the slow tread—
coat wrinkled and her belongings in a paper bag,
face unwashed and the grey hair uncombed;

simple soul, who so early in the morning when only the
poorest go to work,
stood up in the subway and outshouting the noise:
'Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen, I have a baby at home who
is sick,
and I have no money, no job;' who did not have box or cap
to take coins—
only his hands,
and, seeing only faces turned away,
did not even go down the aisle as beggars do;

the fire had burnt through the floor:
machines and merchandise had fallen into
the great hole, this zero that had sucked away so many years
and now, seen at last, the shop itself;
the ceiling sloped until it almost touched the floor a strange curve
in the lines and oblongs of his life;
drops were falling
from the naked beams of the floor above,
from the soaked plaster, still the ceiling;
drops of dirty water were falling
on his clothes and hat and on his hands;
the thoughts of business
gathered in his bosom like black water

in footsteps through a swamp;
waiting for a job, she studied the dusty table at which she sat
and the floor which had been badly swept—
the office-boy had left the corners dirty;
a mouse ran in and out under the radiator
and she drew her feet away
and her skirt about her legs, but the mouse went in and out
about its business; and she sat waiting for a job
in an unfriendly world of men and mice;

walking along the drive by twos and threes,
talking about jobs,
jobs they might never get and jobs they had had,
never turning to look at the trees or the river
glistening in the sunlight or the automobiles
that went swiftly past them—
in twos and threes talking about jobs;

in the drizzle
four in a row
close to the curb
that passers-by might pass,
the squads stand
waiting for soup,
a slice of bread
and shelter—
grimy clothes
their uniform;
on a stoop
stiffly across the steps
a man
who has fainted;
each in that battalion
eyes him,
but does not move from his place,
well drilled in want.

Snowflakes

Shrouded, stitched in silky white,
they cry aloud all through the night
and find such weeping not enough,
the bird of guilt brings that sound here
for our anxiety and fear.

Once you were sweetest.
You turned bitter hot.
The wind compressed your breast.
Silence turned to test.
You were. Now you’re not.

Without a sled, the little snow
circled the strange land far below
and fell on lips, on women’s faces
as they poured themselves into clay embraces
where the poisoned honeycomb was laid.

Nothing but silent snow falling, snow not
making a sound, like a hand that writes
to cover everything up. Snow falls right
on the window, falls white on the piers,
it lies down a moment, then disappears
to another world—and you miss it a lot.

I’ve heard when it sees horses under the yoke
it performs a miracle like a joke,
and laughs when the coachman, without thinking,
creature of habit and heavy drinking,
eyes dazzled by glistening steeds and tack,
still calls his horses black.

There are so many crippens in Germany! How is it possible?”

“How slowly the time passes here, encompassed as I am by frost and snow! yet a second step is taken towards my enterprise. I have hired a vessel, and am occupied in collecting my sailors; those whom I have already engaged appear to be men on whom I can depend, and are certainly possessed of dauntless courage.
But I have one want which I have never yet been able to satisfy; and the absence of the object of which I now feel as a most severe evil. I have no friend, Margaret: when I am glowing with the enthusiasm of success, there will be none to participate my joy; if I am assailed by disappointment, no one will endeavour to sustain me in dejection. I shall commit my thoughts to paper, it is true; but that is a poor medium for the communication of feeling. I desire the company of a man who could sympathise with me; whose eyes would reply to mine. You may deem me romantic, my dear sister, but I bitterly feel the want of a friend. I have no one near me, gentle yet courageous, possessed of a cultivated as well as of a capacious mind, whose tastes are like my own, to approve or amend my plans. How would such a friend repair the faults of your poor brother! I am too ardent in execution, and too impatient of difficulties. But it is a still greater evil to me that I am self-educated: for the first fourteen years of my life I ran wild on a common, and read nothing but our uncle Thomas's books of voyages. At that age I became acquainted with the celebrated poets of our own country; but it was only when it had ceased to be in my power to derive its most important benefits from such a conviction that I perceived the necessity of becoming acquainted with more languages than that of my native country. Now I am twenty-eight, and am in reality more illiterate than many schoolboys of fifteen. It is true that I have thought more, and that my day dreams are more extended and magnificent; but they want (as the painters call it) keeping; and I greatly need a friend who would have sense enough not to despise me as romantic, and affection enough for me to endeavour to regulate my mind."

Zo

‘Screaming that all the world is mad, that clues
Lead nowhere, or to walls so high their tops cannot be seen;
Screaming all day of war, screaming that nothing can be solved.’

Je gezicht eindelijk in rust.
Er is iets anders doorgebroken, iets lichters,
stijgend in eigen verbazing,
                     vrij ademend,
                            dankbaar.

Uit: Stoner

“In a moment of silence, someone cleared his throat. Sloane repeated the lines, his voice becoming flat, his own again.
"This thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well which thou must leave ere long."
Sloane's eyes came back to William Stoner, and he said dryly, "Mr. Shakespeare speaks to you across three hundred years, Mr. Stoner; do you hear him?"
William Stoner realized that for several moments he had been holding his breath. He expelled it gently, minutely aware of his clothing moving upon his body as his breath went out of his lungs. He looked away from Sloane about the room. Light slanted from the windows and settled upon the faces of his fellow students, so that the illumination seemed to come from within them and go out against a dimness; a student blinked, and a thin shadow fell upon a cheek whose down had caught the sunlight. Stoner became aware that his fingers were unclenching their hard grip on his desk-top. He turned his hands about under his gaze, marveling at their brownness, at the intricate way the nails fit into his blunt finger-ends; he thought he could feel the blood flowing invisibly through the tiny veins and arteries, throbbing delicately and precariously from his fingertips through his body.
Sloane was speaking again. "What does he say to you, Mr. Stoner? What does his sonnet mean?"
Stoner's eyes lifted slowly and reluctantly. "It means," he said, and with a small movement raised his hands up toward the air; he felt his eyes glaze over as they sought the figure of Archer Sloane. "It means," he said again, and could not finish what he had begun to say.
Sloane looked at him curiously. Then he nodded abruptly and said, "Class is dismissed." Without looking at anyone he turned and walked out of the room.
William Stoner was hardly aware of the students about him who rose grumbling and muttering from their seats and shuffled out of the room. For several minutes after they left he sat unmoving, staring out before him at the narrow planked flooring that had been worn bare of varnish by the restless feet of students he would never seeor know. He slid his own feet across the floor, hearing the dry rasp of wood on his soles, and feeling the roughness through the leather. Then he too got up and went slowly out of the room.”

Visions

Je vois passer tous mes baisers,
Toutes mes larmes dépensées ;
Je vois passer dans mes pensées
Tous mes baisers désabusés.

C'est des fleurs sans couleur aucune,
Des jets d'eau bleus à l'horizon,
De la lune sur le gazon,
Et des lys fanés dans la lune.

Lasses et lourdes de sommeil,
Je vois sous mes paupières closes,
Les corbeaux au milieu des rosés,
Et les malades au soleil,

Et lent sur mon âme indolente,
L'ennui de ces vagues amours
Luire immobile et pour toujours,
Comme une étoile pâle et lente

Intentions

Au fil de moires éternelles ;
Et ces vertus sous mes yeux clos !

Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, des fleurs étranges
Montent aux cols des nénuphars ;
Et les vagues mains de vos anges
Agitent l’eau de mes regards.

Et leurs fleurs s’éveillent aux signes

Épars au milieu des flots bleus ;

Quand l’amour a parlé;
Il n’est âme qui meure
Quand l’amour a pleuré...

Et si l’amour s’égare
Aux sentiers d’ici-bas,
Ses larmes me retrouvent
Et ne s’égarent pas...

For A Birthday

I have reached a time when words no longer help:
Instead of guiding me across the moors
Strong landmarks in the uncertain out-of-doors,
Or like dependable friars on the Alp
Saving with wisdom and with brandy kegs,
They are gravel-stones, or tiny dogs which yelp
Biting my trousers, running round my legs.
Description and analysis degrade,
Limit, delay, slipped land from what has been;
And when we groan My Darling what we mean
Looked at more closely would too soon evade
The intellectual habit of our eyes;
And either the experience would fade
Or our approximations would be lies.
The snarling dogs are weight upon my haste,
Tons which I am detaching ounce by ounce.
All my agnostic irony I renounce
So I may climb to regions where I rest
In springs of speech, the dark before of truth:
The sweet moist wafer of your tongue I taste,
And find right meanings in your silent mouth.

Baby Song

From the private ease of Mother's womb
I fall into the lighted room.

Why don't they simply put me back
Where it is warm amd wet and black?

But one thing follows on another.
Things were different inside Mother.

Padded and jolly I would ride
The perfect comfort of her inside.

They tuck me in a rustling bed

—I lie there, raging, small, and red.

I may sleep soon, I may forget,
But I won't forget that I regret.

A rain of blood poured round her womb,
But all time roars outside this room.

The Heron (Fragment)

But that was not the whole story.
The night fallen away, you could stand up to your ankles
In platters of frozen snow on the flooded grass
And stare, and curse a supposed god of some kind,
And at last touch, as guilty as though to break faith
With an absent friend:  spreading the rounded wing
Tenderly grey as an archangel cygnet might be,
Springing it again, inappropriately elastic for death,
Lifting the flopped and folded neck, empty
          Rubber, absurd to imagine as support for that hard
                     Weight of head and great sword bill…’

Der blonde Jack.

„Wohin ist - ach, wohin
Der blonde Jack gezogen?“
Dahin ist er, dahin,
Weit über Meereswogen.
Er streitet am entfernten Strand
Für Freundes Herd und Freundes Land.
Weit über Meereswogen
Ist Jack dahin gezogen.

„Woher ist - ach, woher
Der blonde Jack gekommen?“
Von Schottlands Felsen her,
Hispanien zu Frommen.
Aus theurer Heimath ging er aus;
Zur blauen Glocke heißt sein Haus.
Hispanien zu Frommen,
Ist Jack daher gekommen.

„Woran läßt sich - woran
Der blonde Jack erkennen?“
Zwey Stücke zeig' ich an,
Die dir ihn treulich nennen.
Ein Schurz, gestreift in Roth und Grau,
Ein Federbusch in sächsisch Blau,
Die lassen ihn erkennen,
Die mögen Jack dir nennen.

„Doch wär’ einst - ach, wie schnell
lm Streite Jack geblieben?“
Dann flöss' ein Tränenquell
Der Brüder, die ihn lieben.
Mit Dudelsack und Trommelton
Begleitete man Schottlands Sohn,
Acb , Jack, den Alle lieben,
Ist fern der Glocke blieben!
