Den grooten Potiphar, dien koningklijken man;
By Pharoos amptenaer, die hem goetwilligh slaeckte,
Hecht, nacht en dagh gerust, den avont aen den morgen;
In haeren geilen geest, zoo schendigh wort vervoert,
Heeft zy nu, dagh op dagh, den jongeling bestreden;

- Ah !

Uit: Will This Do? An Autobiography

“What she found attractive in him, I suspect, was his humour. Laura Waugh, for all her apparent shyness and avoidance of company, was a born satirist. Behind a veil of good manners, she mocked everybody and everything. The strength necessary to support such an attitude came, ultimately, not from any sense of social superiority but from her Catholicism, which grew more devout, and at the same time more sceptical, with age.
Her husband was moody and given to fits of acute depression which left her largely to her own devices. Shunning ordinary human contact, she sought refuge in cows and rejoiced in the company of farming folk. At other times, she retreated into her own private meditations whose direction was not easily to be distinguished from simple misanthropy. She killed time with crosswords, word games and jigsaws. She was at ease with her children and their friends, and with her own family and, of course, with Coggins, but with practically nobody else. She was also haunted by the spectacle of her mother, my once all-powerful grandmother, whom she had to nurse through a last year of distressing debility.
Many thought that she was too self-effacing and let her husband get away with too much, but it suited her as much as it suited him that he should take his meals in the library if he chose, or go away for long periods, seeking warmer climates in the winter, or carousing with smart friends in London. She saw herself primarily as a farmer, her five or six cows the pride and joy of her life. Some interpreted her decision to publish Evelyn Waugh’s diaries - they first appeared in a shortened, more lurid serialization in the Observer - as an act of revenge, but it was more the product of absent-mindedness. She intended to read the series before publication, but eventually got round to reading only a small part.”

When The Eyes Open

Snow on the mountains
above the High Places
and above Jerusalem.
Come down O Jerusalem
and return my child to me.
Come O Bethlehem
and return my child to me.
Come high mountains
come winds
come floods in the harbors
and return my child to me.
And even you, O bent bulrush,
thin stalk in the stream,
stringy desert bushes,
return my child to me
as the soul returns to the body
when the eyes open.

Get Out of Beirut

Take the knapsacks
and the utensils and washtubs
and the books of the Koran
and the army fatigues
and the tall tales and the torn soul
and whatever's left, bread or meat,
and kids running around like chickens in the village.
How many children do you have?
How many children did you have?
It's hard to keep tabs on kids in a situation like this.
Not like in the old country
in the shade of the mosque and the fig tree,
when the children the children would be shooed outside by day
and put to bed at night.
Put whatever isn't fragile into sacks,
clothes and blankets and bedding and diapers
and something for a souvenir
like a shiny artillery shell perhaps,
or some kind of useful tool,
and the babies with rheumy eyes
and the R.P.G. kids.
We want to see you in the water, sailing aimlessly
with no harbor and no shore.
You won't be accepted anywhere
You are banished human beings.
You are people who don't count
You are people who aren't needed
You are a pinch of lice
stinging and itching
to madness.

Uit: Becoming the Third Wave

“I am not one of the people who sat transfixed before the television, watching the Senate hearings. I had class-es to go to, papers to write, and frankly, the whole thing was too painful.
A black man grilled by a panel of white men about his sexual deviance. A black woman claiming harassment and being discredited by other women.... I could not bring myself to watch that sensationalized assault of the human spirit.
To me, the hearings were not about determining whether or not Clarence Thomas did in fact harass Anita Hill. They were about checking and redefining the extent of women’s credibility and power.
Can a woman’s experience undermine a man’s career-, Can a woman’s voice, a woman’s sense of self-worth and injustice, challenge a structure predicated upon the subjugation of our gender Anita Hill’s testimony threatened to do that and more. If Thomas had not been confirmed, every man in the United States would be at risk. For how many senators never told a sexist Joke–
How many men have not used their protected male privilege to thwart in some way the influence or ideas of a woman colleague, friend, or relative.
For those whose sense of power is so obviously connected to the health and vigor of the penis. it would have been a metaphoric castration. Of course this is too great a threat.
While some may laud the whole spectacle for the consciousness it raised around sexual harassment, its very real outcome is more informative. He was promoted. She was repudiated. Men were assured of the inviolabIlity of their penis/power. Women were admonished to keep their experiences to themselves.”

Uit: Inheritance

“In the beginning, there were dragons: proud, fierce, and independent. Their scales were like gems, and all who gazed upon them despaired, for their beauty was great and terrible.
And they lived alone in the land of Alagaësia for ages uncounted.
Then the god Helzvog made the stout and sturdy dwarves from the stone of the Hadarac Desert.
And their two races warred much.
Then the elves sailed to Alagaësia from across the silver sea. They too warred with the dragons. But the elves were stronger than the dwarves, and they would have destroyed the dragons, even as the dragons would have destroyed the elves.
And so a truce was struck and a pact was sealed between the dragons and the elves. And by this joining, they created the Dragon Riders, who kept the peace throughout Alagaësia for thousands of years.
Then humans sailed to Alagaësia. And the horned Urgals. And the Ra’zac, who are the hunters in the dark and the eaters of men’s flesh.
And the humans also joined the pact with the dragons.
Then a young Dragon Rider, Galbatorix, rose up against his own kind. He enslaved the black dragon Shruikan and he convinced thirteen other Riders to follow him. And the thirteen were called the Forsworn.
And Galbatorix and the Forsworn cast down the Riders and burnt their city on the isle of Vroengard and slew every dragon not their own, save for three eggs: one red, one blue, one green. And from each dragon they could, they took the heart of hearts—the Eldunarí—that holds the might and mind of the dragons, apart from their flesh.”

In November

The leafless forests slowly yield
To the thick-driving snow. A little while
And night shall darken down. In shouting file
The woodmen's carts go by me homeward-wheeled,
Past the thin fading stubbles, half concealed,
Now golden-gray, sowed softly through with snow,
Where the last ploughman follows still his row,
Turning black furrows through the whitening field.
Far off the village lamps begin to gleam,
Fast drives the snow, and no man comes this way;
The hills grow wintry white, and bleak winds moan
About the naked uplands. I alone
Am neither sad, nor shelterless, nor gray,
Wrapped round with thought, content to watch and dream.

Dereliction

I quit the carved stool
in my father’s hut to the swelling
chant of saber-tooth termites
raising in the pith of its wood
a white-bellied stalagmite

Where does a runner go
whose oily grip drops
the baton handed by the faithful one
in a hard, merciless race? Or
the priestly elder who barters
for the curio collector’s head
of tobacco the holy staff
of his people?

Let them try the land
where the sea retreats
Let them try the land
where the sea retreats

Lazarus

The breath-taking
of his sisters when the word
spread: He is risen! But a
man who has lived a full life
will have others to
reckon with beside his
sisters. Certainly that keen-eyed
subordinate who has moved up
to his table at the office, for
him resurrection is an awful
embarrassment The luckless
people of Ogbaku knew its
terrors that day the twin-headed
evil strode their highway. It
could not have been easy
picking up again the blood-spattered
clubs they had cast away; or to
turn from the battered body
of the barrister lying beside his
battered limousine to finish off
their own man, stirring now suddenly
in wide-eyed resurrection How well
they understood those grim-faced
villagers wielding their crimson
weapons once more that at the hour
of his rising their kinsman
avenged in murder would turn
away from them in obedience
to other fraternities, would turn indeed
their own accuser and in one
breath obliterate their plea
and justification! So they killed
him a second time that day on the
threshold of a promising resurrection.

For A Cook

What I remember most is what he did to the couple
who sent his best pasta back to the kitchen,
pronouncing it "too thin." Capers and kalamata
olives tossed with squid-ink angelhair
—salty, he used to say, as sweat on a black man's cock.
He said this often, not only to shock:
food should be made with love, and love to him was sweat,
saliva, tears. What do they want from me?
he muttered, adding an egg, more Parmesan, a pint
of heavy cream, and tossed it all together,
the straw-yellow sauce stringy with albumen,
thickened with semen as an afterthought.
Now he is dead. I write the recipe of all
of him that's still out there in circulation:
tips of fingers and knuckles, pared away to scars
by the big knives, carelessly julienned
together with the root vegetables, the stray chips
of thumbnail, here and there a curled black hair,
spit hissing in a skillet, a drop of blood in the sauce,
the oil of his hand glazing the dough.

Uit: Join Me

“l'd opened it immediately and excitedly. and then read it over and over again. I found it one of the most incredible letters I'd ever received.
Why? Because it was a reply to my advert. The advert I'd placed on a whim. And it contained a passport photo of Christian. smiling. Smiling at me; the bloke he'd joined.
‘Wow,’ l’d said to myself. ‘Someone actually did it
l was overawed. I had my first joinee. A new best friend. of sorts. I mean imagine it. From now on, whatever happened. I would always have this; I would always have Christian Jones of London NW1. Even if no one else ever deemed me worthy of joining in the future even if no one in the entire world ever wanted to accept my offer again Chris Jones was mine. and mine alone. My friend. My mate. My cheeky-faced pal.
Granted. we hadn't actually met yet. and if it came down to it and the whole world treated me with disinterest and scorn, why would he feel any difierent? But I had a hunch Jonesy wouldn‘t desert me. We’d come thisfar. me and him. and besides. I was already calling him ‘Jonesy'.
I should probably explain.
You see. like all good books. this one takes place just after the death of an old Swiss man. And. like all good books - modern classics. You might say - this one unwittingly began life in spring, on a farm, in a village. in a Switzerland sprinkled with sunlight and dew.
It’s early aftemoon. and the old Swiss man is tired.
He’s not as young as he used to be - because he’s old - and the farm he once ran with tireless efficiency has got the better of him. as it does every day now. He hasn’t many animals. nor many crops. but he still tries to clean out the cowshed and find fresh hay for the goats and keep up with the weeds. which never seem to tire as he does, the weedy green bastards. He is ninety.”

ficties valt iedere maatschappij terug in barbaarse
anarchie.”

The Solitary

Over scarp, over fen,
over gully and glen
I have gone on the feet of the breeze,
ever meaning to find
an abode for my mind
in the mountains and valleys and seas.

But I found not a one,
all the places were gone,
they were packed with the living and dead.
Now I live all alone
in a lodge of my own
where the licking flames are red.

Eagle Mountain Glacier

Out under Eagle Mountain,
where ice lies broad and bright --
don't imagine I dreamed this! --
some Danes made camp last night.

Today they crawled from their covers
to cook a breakfast buffet
and soon they were gobbling and guzzling
and gulping and slurping away.

Facts on that far-off glacier
are few and hard to obtain.
I doubt that the Danes will bring us
data a bit germane.

Spring And Fall

Brimming springtime brings from sleep
brooks with jaunty prattle,
shaping life anew in sheep --
shepherds too! -- and cattle.

Thrushes warble, throats aglow,
through the plains and islands --
I like roundup, even so,
when autumn fills the highlands.
