‘In Rotterdam?’

‘Waar woont u?’

‘In Nieuwpoort.’

‘Welke straat?’

‘Mauritskade 1600.’

„Everything has led up to this moment. No, wrong, he isn’t there yet. The moment’s just ahead of him. This is the time before the waiting stops and he crosses over into what he’s been waiting for. He inhales the river smell, takes it deep into his nostrils. He’s been moving toward the moment that’s about to happen ever since he woke up this morning, ever since last week, when his father came home from work and with his briefcase still in his hand said they’d be going to Indian Cove on Saturday if the weather held. Every day he could feel it coming closer. It was like waiting for the trip to the amusement park, like waiting for the circus tents to rise out of the fields the next town over. In another second the waiting will end. The day will officially begin. It’s what he’s been hoping for, but here at the edge of the river he doesn’t want to let the waiting go. He wants to hang on with all his might. He’s standing on the shore of the river, the brown-green ripples are breaking at his toes. The sun is shining, Julia’s waving him on, the white barrels are rising and falling gently, and what he wants is to go back to the wooden sign with the tomahawk and start waiting for the shore of the river.

What’s wrong with him? Why can’t he be like Julia? He loves this day, doesn’t he? Any second now he’ll be standing in the water up to his knees, swishing his hands around. He’ll go in up to his bathing suit. He’ll wet his chest and shoulders, hop on the tube and paddle out to Julia. He’ll laugh in the sun.“

Uit: Zorro (Vertaald door Margaret Sayers Peden)

“Let us begin at the beginning, at an event without which Diego de la Vega would not have been born. It happened in Alta California, in the San Gabriel mission in the year 1790 of Our Lord. At that time the mission was under the charge of Padre Mendoza, a Franciscan who had the shoulders of a woodcutter and a much younger appearance than his forty well-lived years warranted. He was energetic and commanding, and the most difficult part of his ministry was to emulate the humility and sweet nature of Saint Francis of Assisi. There were other Franciscan friars in the region supervising the twenty-three missions and preaching the word of Christ among a multitude of Indians from the Chumash, Shoshone, and other tribes who were not always overly cordial in welcoming them. The natives of the coast of California had a network of trade and commerce that had functioned for thousands of years. Their surroundings were very rich in natural resources, and the tribes developed different specialties. The Spanish were impressed with the Chumash economy, so complex that it could be compared to that of China. The Indians had a monetary system based on shells, and they regularly organized fairs that served as an opportunity to exchange goods as well as contract marriages.
Those native peoples were confounded by the mystery of the crucified man the whites worshipped, and they could not understand the advantage of living contrary to their inclinations in this world in order to enjoy a hypothetical well-being in another. In the paradise of the Christians, they might take their ease on a cloud and strum a harp with the angels, but the truth was that in the afterworld most would rather hunt bears with their ancestors in the land of the Great Spirit. Another thing they could not understand was why the foreigners planted a flag in the ground, marked off imaginary lines, claimed that area as theirs, and then took offense if anyone came onto it in pursuit of a deer.”

Uit: Giovanni's Room

"The street he lived on was wide, respectable rather than elegant, and massive with fairly recent apartment buildings; the street ended in a small park. His room was in the back, on the ground floor of the last building on this street. We passed the vestibule and the elevator into a short, dark corridor which led to his room. The room was small, I only made out the outlines of clutter and disorder, there was the smell of alcohol he burned in his stove. He locked the door behind us, and then for a moment, in the gloom, we simply stared at each other--with dismay, with relief, and breathing hard. I was trembling. I thought if I do not open the door at once and get out of here, I am lost. But I knew I could not open the door, I knew it was too late; soon it was too late to do anything but moan. He pulled me against him, putting himself into my arms as though her were giving me himself to carry, and slowly pulled me down with him to that bed. With everything in me screaming No! yet the sum of me sighed Yes."

(…)

“We had our arms around each other. It was like holding in my hand some rare, exhausted, nearly doomed bird which I had miraculously happened to find. I was very frightened; I am sure he was frightened too, and we shut our eyes. To remember it so clearly, so painfully tonight tells me that I have never for an instant truly forgotten it. I feel in myself now a faint, a dreadful stirring of what so overwhelmingly stirred in me then, great thirsty heat, and trembling, and tenderness so painful I thought my heart would burst. But out if this astonishing, intolerable pain came joy; we gave each other joy that night. It seemed, then, that a lifetime would not be long enough for me to act with Joey the act of love.”

Uit: Killing Time

„There are no newspapers here, no televisions, and above all no computers, which means no damned Internet. Dugumbe forbids it all. His explanation for this stance is simple, though no less profound for its simplicity: information, he insists, is not knowledge. The lessons passed on from one's elders, taught by the wisest of them but recorded only in the mind, these, Dugumbe has always said, represent true knowledge. The media I've mentioned can only divert a man from such wisdom and enslave him to what Dugumbe calls the worst of all devils: confusion. There was a time when I--a man of the West, the possessor of not one but two doctorates--would have laughed at and disdained such beliefs; and in truth, during the time I've been here the laws and folklore of these people have come to trouble me deeply. Yet in a world stuffed full of deliberately warped information, of manufactured "truths" that have ignited conflicts far greater than Dugumbe's tribal struggles, I now find myself clinging to the core of the old king's philosophy even more tightly than he does.
There--I've just heard it. Distant but unmistakable: the thunderous rumble that heralds their approach. It'll appear out of the sky soon, that spectral ship; or perhaps it will rise up out of the waters of Lake Albert. And then the burning will begin again, particularly if Dugumbe attempts to forcefully resist the extraordinary brother and sister who command the vessel. Yes, time is running out, and I must write faster--though just what purpose my writing serves is not quite so clear. Is it for the sake of my own sanity, to reassure myself that it all truly happened? Or is it for some larger goal, perhaps the creation of a document that I can feed out over what has become my own devil, the Internet, and thereby fight fire with fire? The latter theory assumes, of course, that someone will believe me. But I can't let such doubts prevent the attempt. Someone must listen, and, even more important, someone must understand . .“

COMRADE

Petits mois petites fumées
et l’oubli en robe de laine
une porte s’ouvre tendrement
près du mur où naît le vent
près du jardin bienheureux
où les saints et les anges
ont peur des saisons
Les allées n’ont pas de noms
ce sont les heures ou les années
je me promène lentement
Quelquefois je me dis
Il est temps de s’arrêter
et je continue à marcher
Je me dis
Il faut prendre l’air
Il faut regarder les nuages
et respirer à pleins poumons
Il faut voir voler les mouches
et faire une promenade de santé
Il ne faut pas tant fumer
je me dis aussi
Calculons
je me dis encore
encore beaucoup d’autres choses
qui sont toujours les mêmes
innombrables
identiques
Mon Dieu mon Dieu

supervisje.
Lief zijn.
En vergeten.

Bij een oude foto

dertig was ik
(in 1963 was ik niet lelijk)
de vrouw die me fotografeerde zei:
nu moet je aan mij denken
ontspan je lippen

een gescheiden vrouw
met vier aardige katten
maar even dominerend
als mijn Duitse hospita
dus hield ik flink afstand

ze had een donkere kamer
waarin ze mij heeft ontwikkeld
zelfs uitvergroot
(later ingelijst
hoelang heb ik op haar buffet
gestaan?
wat heeft ze ernaar starende
gedaan?)

onlangs toonde ik iemand
die foto
hij vroeg:
is dat je zoon?

Uitkomst

toen ik jonger was
droomde ik dat er niets
van me terecht zou komen
twaalf ambachten enzovoorts
alleen blijven zou ik
op honderd huurkamers wonen
bespioneerd door Duitse hospita's
en zie
vierenvijftig ben ik
ál mijn dromen
werden ten volle bewaarheid
wat wil ik nog meer?

Fell from the roof on East Two-nine

Cathy was 11 when she pulled the plug

On 26 reds and a bottle of wine

Bobby got leukemia, 14 years old

He looked like 65 when he died

He was a friend of mine

Those are people who died, died

They were all my friends, and they died

G-berg and Georgie let their gimmicks go rotten

So they died of hepatitis in upper Manhattan

Sly in Vietnam took a bullet in the head

Bobby OD'd on Drano on the night that he was wed

They were two more friends of mine

Two more friends that died

Those are people who died, died

They were all my friends, and they died

Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room

Bobby hung himself from a cell in the tombs

Judy jumped in front of a subway train

Eddie got slit in the jugular vein

And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others

And I salute you brother

Those are people who died, died

They were all my friends, and they died

Herbie pushed Tony from the Boys' Club roof

Tony thought that his rage was just some goof

But Herbie sure gave Tony some bitchen proof

"Hey," Herbie said, "Tony, can you fly?"

But Tony couldn't fly, Tony died

Those are people who died, died

They were all my friends, and they died

Brian got busted on a narco rap

He beat the rap by rattin' on some bikers

He said, "Hey, I know it's dangerous, but it sure beats Riker's"

But the next day he got offed by the very same bikers

Those are people who died, died

They were all my friends, and they died

Teddy sniffing glue, he was 12 years old

Fell from the roof on East Two-nine

Cathy was 11 when she pulled the plug

On 26 reds and a bottle of wine

Uit: Op Oloop (Vertaald door Lisa Dillman)

„0:00 A.M.

The clock struck ten.

He'd taken great care writing the invitations. Now all he had to do was address the last envelope, to his closest friend, Piet Van Saal. But he couldn't. He felt as though two leaden talons had alighted on his shoulders, determined to wrench him from his task.

He sat there for quite some time, his head lolling against the headrest of his swivel chair. Laxity suited him. Then, slowly, demurely, he opened his eyes. And once again leaned toward the desk, trying to fool fate. He looked left and right, furtively--like a common criminal--and took up his pen. But he could get no further than the S of Senor. A fine, elegant capital S, like a meat hook. And on it he hung what remained of his body (fatigue) and soul (exasperation).

Thus, Op Oloop was convinced yet again that it was simply impossible for him to act contrary to his nature. "SUNDAY: WRITING, BETWEEN 7:00 AND 10:00 A.M." That was the rule. When life is as ordered as a mathematical equation, you can't just skip a digit whenever you feel like it. Op Oloop was entirely incapable of any impromptu act that might violate the pre-established norms of his routine, even such a trivial, graphical act as addressing an envelope he'd already begun while still within the allotted time.

"Oh well. I'll see him in person," he consoled himself. Op Oloop was method personified--an accomplished executioner of spontaneity: method made word; all his hopes, desires, feelings channeled into the vessel of method. He was method incarnate: undisturbed by even the tiniest rogue impulse, the littlest leap or bound--be it spiritual or carnal. How could he break that rhythm? How could he alter that flow?“

LA NEIGE

La neige nous met en rêve

Sur de vastes plaines,

Sans traces ni couleur.

Veille mon cœur,

La neige nous met en selle

Sur des coursiers d’écume.

Sonne l’enfance couronnée,

La neige nous sacre en haute-mer,

Plein songe,

Toute voile dehors.

La neige nous met en magie.

Blancheur étale.

Plumes gonflées

Où perce l’œil de cet oiseau.

Mon cœur ;

Parfois, je l’oublie ;

„There now is your insular city of the Manhattoes, belted round by wharves as Indian isles by coral reefs- commerce surrounds it with her surf. Right and left, the streets take you waterward. Its extreme downtown is the battery, where that noble mole is washed by waves, and cooled by breezes, which a few hours previous were out of sight of land. Look at the crowds of water-gazers there.

Circumambulate the city of a dreamy Sabbath afternoon. Go from Corlears Hook to Coenties Slip, and from thence, by Whitehall, northward. What do you see?- Posted like silent sentinels all around the town, stand thousands upon thousands of mortal men fixed in ocean reveries. Some leaning against the spiles; some seated upon the pier-heads; some looking over the bulwarks of ships from China; some high aloft in the rigging, as if striving to get a still better seaward peep. But these are all landsmen; of week days pent up in lath and plaster- tied to counters, nailed to benches, clinched to desks. How then is this? Are the green fields gone? What do they here?

But look! here come more crowds, pacing straight for the water, and seemingly bound for a dive. Strange! Nothing will content them but the extremest limit of the land; loitering under the shady lee of yonder warehouses will not suffice. No. They must get just as nigh the water as they possibly can without falling And there they stand- miles of them- leagues. Inlanders all, they come from lanes and alleys, streets avenues- north, east, south, and west. Yet here they all unite. Tell me, does the magnetic virtue of the needles of the compasses of all those ships attract them thither?

Once more. Say you are in the country; in some high land of lakes. Take almost any path you please, and ten to one it carries you down in a dale, and leaves you there by a pool in the stream. There is magic in it. Let the most absent-minded of men be plunged in his deepest reveries- stand that man on his legs, set his feet a-going, and he will infallibly lead you to water, if water there be in all that region. Should you ever be athirst in the great American desert, try this experiment, if your caravan happen to be supplied with a metaphysical professor. Yes, as every one knows, meditation and water are wedded for ever.“

Uit: Don't Tell Anyone

„Did I tell you she was raped?
And not by the man she stabbed?
If you could do . . . something--I couldn't remember what--then you'd be able to do something else. I couldn't remember that, either. I knew it was the poem they quote at commencements and at civic-awards ceremonies in small upstate communities like mine. I remembered the rhythm of its lines, but I couldn't remember the words.
My head was a hive of half-remembered words, tatters of statement, halves of stories, the litter of alibis, confessions, supplications, and demands, the aftereffects, perhaps, of the time I spent standing beside my grown, or half-grown, ungrown, ingrown child in a courtroom. She trembled, and I tried to situate myself, standing as we were before the clerks' desk, which was before and below the bench of the judge, so that she could lean her thin, shivering body on mine, at least a shoulder or forearm, at least the comfort I could offer with the heft of my hand against the hard, cold, bony fingers of hers. But she would not accept the heat of my flesh or the weight I wished she might prop herself on. The trial for the crime had never taken place, because our lawyer convinced us--Alec, my daughter, and me--that she should plead nolo contendere: guilty, in a word. She had, as they say, copped a plea. She'd bargained down. She and the victim and the Manhattan district attorney's office had agreed to change the shape of events. We would say that Alec did not incise three small cuts in the skin of Victor Petrekis's face with a stainless-steel pocket knife brought to her from England by her father when she was small. She and our lawyer, Petrekis and the assistant district attorney, had constructed a language to make her crime the attempt of the deed she had in fact done. And we were before the judge to hear the sentence he would pass.“

Defence of Fort M'Henry (Fragment)

Tune – Anacreon In Heaven

O! say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there --
O! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream --
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

Zoals regen...

Romantische herfst

Iets

Het leven
je zou het je moeten kunnen
herinneren
als een buitenlandse reis
en er met vrienden of vriendinnen
over na moeten praten

Uit: Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire

„The maid had run screaming down the hill into the village and roused as many people as she could.
"Lying there with their eyes wide open! Cold as ice! Still in their dinner things!"
The police were summoned, and the whole of Little Hangleton had seethed with shocked curiosity and ill-disguised excitement. Nobody wasted their breath pretending to feel very sad about the Riddles, for they had been most unpopular. Elderly Mr. and Mrs. Riddle had been rich, snobbish, and rude, and their grown-up son, Tom, had been, if anything, worse. All the villagers cared about was the identity oftheir murderer for plainly, three apparently healthy people did not all drop dead of natural causes on the same night.
The Hanged Man, the village pub, did a roaring trade that night; the whole village seemed to have turned out to discuss the murders. They were rewarded for leaving their firesides when the Riddles' cook arrived dramatically in their midst and announced to the suddenly silent pub that a man called Frank Bryce had just been arrested.

"Frank!" cried several people. "Never!"
Frank Bryce was the Riddles' gardener. He lived alone in a rundown cottage on the grounds of the Riddle House. Frank had come back from the war with a very stiff leg and a great dislike of crowds and loud noises, and had been working for the Riddles ever since

Reveille

In the brutal nights we used to dream
Dense violent dreams,
Dreamed with soul and body:
To return; to eat; to tell the story.
Until the dawn command
Sounded brief, low
'Wstawac'
And the heart cracked in the breast.

Now we have found our homes again,
Our bellies are full,
We're through telling the story.
It's time. Soon we'll hear again
The strange command:
'Wstawac'

Shema

You who live secure
In your warm houses
Who return at evening to find
Hot food and friendly faces:

Consider whether this is a man,
Who labours in the mud
Who knows no peace
Who fights for a crust of bread
Who dies at a yes or a no.
Consider whether this is a woman,
Without hair or name
With no more strength to remember
Eyes empty and womb cold
As a frog in winter.

Consider that this has been:
I commend these words to you.
Engrave them on your hearts
When you are in your house, when you walk on your way,
When you go to bed, when you rise.
Repeat them to your children.
Or may your house crumble,
Disease render you powerless,
Your offspring avert their faces from you.

„My brother was five years elder to me, but only three grades ahead. Not that his tryst with schooling began late, it surely must been his keen devotion to learning that dissuaded him from any hasty progress. How could the great monument of knowledge stand tall without a strong foundation? Hence the motto of spending more than a year in each division.
My upbringing was solely his responsibility and for me, his was obviously the final word. How could I ever think of defying him? He was so studious … always engrossed in books. I often found fancy cats, dogs and birds drawn on few pages of his note books…. could well have been his idea of taking a break perhaps.
Many a times he wrote a single name several times over, or scribbled few sentences that didn’t make any sense to me. For instance, once I found the following etched in his notebook:
Special, Ameena, brothers, because, Radheshyam, Mr. Radheshyam, one hour…
At the end of this trail was the image of a man. I broke my head over this creation but failed to unravel the mystery. Nor did I dare to ask him. He was in the ninth standard; I was only in the fifth grade…how could I attempt to dissect such intricate stuff?
I never lost a single chance to rush to the playground, throwing pebbles in the air; flying paper butterflies. Climbing up and down the stairs, riding the hostel gate like a motorcar….I had great fun, but back in the hostel room, an eerie silence invariably unnerved me.
My brother would fling the first question rudely “Where were you?”

My answer was a meek silence, conveying the acceptance of my crime. He would then caution me in a flurry of kind and rude words.“

Stimmung

Ich weiß es nicht und kann es nicht enthüllen;

Unfassbar

“You wouldn’t believe some of the weird shit people pay me to steal.

Old things, new things. Expensive things, rare things, gross things.

Lately it’s been naughty things.

We’ve all heard stories about people who regret their tattoos. But I’d rather spend eternity with Tweety

Bird inked on my ass than knowing there’s a hide- thecucumber short film out there with my name on it, and my bank account tells me I’m not alone. I’ve done three pilfer- the- porno cases in the last eight months, and I’ve got another one on deck.

But I think I’m going to tell that fourth case to go to hell. Maybe I’ll quit doing them altogether. They

make me feel like an ambulance chaser, or one of those private dicks who earns a living by spying on cheating spouses, and that’s no fun. Profitable, yes, but there’s no dignity in it, and I don’t need the money that badly. In fact, I don’t need the money at all. I’ve been at this gig for nearly a century, and in that time I’ve stored up quite a healthy little nest egg.

I suppose this begs the question of why I’d even bother with loathsome cases, if all I’m going to do is bitch about them. It can’t be mere boredom, can it? Mere boredom cannot explain why I willingly

breached the bedroom of a fifty- year- old man with a penchant for stuffed animals in Star Trek uniforms.

But I say all that to simply say this: I was ready for a different kind of case. I would even go so far as to say I was eager for a different kind of case, but if you haven’t heard the old adage about being careful what you wish for, and you’d like a cautionary fable based upon that finger- wagging premise, well then. Keep reading. Have I got a doozy for you.“

Elegy

Those of us who have hands that don’t belong to us,
too grotesque for a caress, useless for the workroom or the hoe,
long and flaccid like a flower bereaved of seed
or like a reptile that offers up its venom
because it has nothing else to give.
Those of us who have a guilty or embittered look
from which the unfinished death of the world peers out
and which glows a smile that freezes before the naked statues
because it will never close itself around gold rings
or give itself over like a torch over the horizons of time
on a night whose dawn is but this noon
that flagellates our skins at times ripped out forever.

Those of us who have rolled through the ages like a rock broken off from Genesis
over the grass or among the undergrowth in unbridled rush
to remain unstoppable and never go back to what we were
while men ascend with difficulty
and sprout other hands from their own to bend the direction of the winds
or to weave themselves tenderly.

Those of us who dress bodies with old suits,
for whom theft is enough or the alms of a crumb that is all bread and only Host,
we have arrived at the shores of the centuries that go by our anguished hearts
and we will never see with clean eyes
another day like this one when all the music in the universe
becomes a voice that doesn’t listen to anyone among the empty words
and in the dream without water.

Uit: Wuthering Heights

“One stop brought us into the family sitting-room, without any introductory lobby or passage: they call it here 'the house' pre-eminently. It includes kitchen and parlour, generally; but I believe at Wuthering Heights the kitchen is forced to retreat altogether into another quarter: at least I distinguished a chatter of tongues, and a clatter of culinary utensils, deep within; and I observed no signs of roasting, boiling, or baking, about the huge fireplace; nor any glitter of copper saucepans and tin cullenders on the walls. One end, indeed, reflected splendidly both light and heat from ranks of immense pewter dishes, interspersed with silver jugs and tankards, towering row after row, on a vast oak dresser, to the very roof. The latter had never been under-drawn: its entire anatomy lay bare to an inquiring eye, except where a frame of wood laden with oatcakes and clusters of legs of beef, mutton, and ham, concealed it. Above the chimney were sundry villainous old guns, and a couple of horse-pistols: and, by way of ornament, three gaudily-painted canisters disposed along its ledge. The floor was of smooth, white stone; the chairs, high-backed, primitive structures, painted green: one or two heavy black ones lurking in the shade. In an arch under the dresser reposed a huge, liver-coloured bitch pointer, surrounded by a swarm of squealing puppies; and other dogs haunted other recesses.

The apartment and furniture would have been nothing extraordinary as belonging to a homely, northern farmer, with a stubborn countenance, and stalwart limbs set out to advantage in knee-breeches and gaiters. Such an individual seated in his arm-chair, his mug of ale frothing on the round table before him, is to be seen in any circuit of five or six miles among these hills, if you go at the right time after dinner.“

Uit: Young Adam

“Salt?” I said, the monosyllable carrying the cynical weight of my disbelief.

“Starin’ you in the face,” she said.

It was damp. I had to scrape it from the side of the dish with my knife. Ella ignored the scratching sound and Leslie, his face twitching as it sometimes did, went on reading the paper. It was only when I had began to eat my bacon that it occurred to me they’d had an egg. I could see the traces on the prongs of their forks. And after I’d gone all the way across the dock to the telephone… Leslie got up noisily, without his second cup of tea. He was embarrassed. Ella had her back to me and I swore at her under my breath. A moment later she too went up on deck, taking the kid with her, and I was left alone to finish my breakfast. young adam

We were all on deck when the ambulance arrived. It was one of those new ambulances, streamlined, and the men were very smart. Two policemen arrived at the same time, one of them a sergeant,

and Leslie went ashore to talk to them. Jim, the kid, was sitting on an upturned pail near the bows so that he would get a good view. He was eating an apple. I was still annoyed and I sat down on a hatch and waited. I looked out across the water at the black buffalo-like silhouette of a tug which crept upstream near the far shore. Beyond it on the far bank, a network of cranes and girders closed in about a ship. “To sail away on a ship like that,” I thought, “away. Montevideo, Macao, anywhere. What the hell am I doing here? The pale North.” It was still early and the light was still thin but already a saucer of tenuous smoke was gathering at the level of the roofs.

Then the ambulance men came across the quay and on to the

barge and I pointed to where we had put the body under the sacks. I left them to it. I was thinking again of the dead woman and the egg and the salt and I was bored by the fact that it was the beginning of the day and not the end of it, days being each the same as the other as they were then, alike as beads on a string, with only the work on the barge, and Leslie to talk to.”

Mijn Hemel

„Tegenwoordig krijgt men vast diazepam voorgeschreven. Of mindfulness.”

Alles is goed.”

„Is alles goed?”

Water. Vuur. Alles is

Zoveel kleiner is waarvoor

‘Ik heb me voortgeplant, kerel!

Der Presslufthammer musste her.

Keinen Mumm, was?“

The Science Of The Night

I touch you in the night, whose gift was you,

My careless sprawler,

And I touch you cold, unstirring, star-bemused,

That have become the land of your self-strangeness.
What long seduction of the bone has led you

Down the imploring roads I cannot take

Into the arms of ghosts I never knew,

Leaving my manhood on a rumpled field

To guard you where you lie so deep

In absent-mindedness,

Caught in the calcium snows of sleep?

And even should I track you to your birth

Through all the cities of your mortal trial,

As in my jealous thought I try to do,

You would escape me--from the brink of earth

Take off to where the lawless auroras run,

You with your wild and metaphysic heart.

My touch is on you, who are light-years gone.

We are not souls but systems, and we move

In clouds of our unknowing

like great nebulae.

Our very motives swirl and have their start

With father lion and with mother crab.

Dreamer, my own lost rib,

Whose planetary dust is blowing

Past archipelagoes of myth and light

What far Magellans are you mistress of

To whom you speed the pleasure of your art?

As through a glass that magnifies my loss

I see the lines of your spectrum shifting red,

The universe expanding, thinning out,

Our worlds flying, oh flying, fast apart.

From hooded powers and from abstract flight

I summon you, your person and your pride.

Fall to me now from outer space,

Still fastened desperately to my side;

Through gulfs of streaming air

Bring me the mornings of the milky ways

Down to my threshold in your drowsy eyes;

And by the virtue of your honeyed word

Restore the liquid language of the moon,

That in gold mines of secrecy you delve.

Awake!

My whirling hands stay at the noon,

Each cell within my body holds a heart

And all my hearts in unison strike twelve.

Uit:: The Crisis (Vertaald door Charles Rougle)

“Just the other day, citizens, they hauled a load of bricks down the street. Yes, indeed!

You know, my heart up and started to pitter-patter with joy. On account of this means we're building, citizens. They don't go hauling bricks around for nothing. It's begun—cross your fingers and knock on wood!

Maybe in about twenty years, maybe less, all citizens might have a whole room each. And if the population doesn't go and grow too fast, and if, for instance, they'll let everyone get an abortion, maybe there'll be two or even three per snoot. Bathroom included.

Then we'll really begin living, citizens! There'll be one room, say, to sleep in, another for entertaining guests, and a third for whichever... All kinds of stuff! Living a free life like that we'll find plenty of things to do.

Well, but for the time being this living space thing is kind of tough. Sort of skimpy on account of the crisis.

Now me, you guys, I've lived in Moscow. Just got back from there. Got to know this crisis first hand.

So I come to Moscow. I'm walking around the streets with my things. And I mean there was just no way. Not only no place to stay, but no place to put my things.

So two weeks I'm walking the streets with my things. Grew a scruffy beard and little by little lost all my things. So there I was traveling light without anything. Trying to find somewhere to live.

Finally in one building there's this little guy coming down the stairs.

"For thirty rubles," he goes, "I can set you up in the bathroom. It's a classy apartment," he says. "Three toilets... A bathroom... In the bathroom," he goes, "is where you can live. No windows," he says, "but there is a door. And you've got water right there. If you want," he says, "fill up the tub and dive around all day."

Abendgang

Durch schmiege Nacht
Schweigt unser Schritt dahin
Die Hände bangen blass um krampfes Grauen
Der Schein sticht scharf in Schatten unser Haupt
In Schatten
Uns!
Hoch flimmt der Stern
Die Pappel hängt herauf
Und
Hebt die Erde nach
Die schlafe Erde armt den nackten Himmel
Du schaust und schauerst
Deine Lippen dünsten
Der Himmel küsst
Und

‘Suzie, het spijt me.

Uit: Under the Volcano

“Slightly to the right and below them, below the gigantic red evening, whose reflection bled away in the deserted swimming pools scattered everywhere like so many mirages, lay the peace and sweetness of the town. It seemed peaceful enough from where they were sitting. Only if one listened intently, as M. Laruelle was doing now, could one distinguish a remote confused sound—distinct yet somehow inseparable from the minute murmuring, the tintinnabulation of the mourners—as of singing, rising and falling, and a steady trampling—the bangs and cries of the fiesta that had been going on all day.

M. Laruelle poured himself another anís. He was drinking anís because it reminded him of absinthe. A deep flush had suffused his face, and his hand trembled slightly over the bottle, from whose label a florid demon brandished a pitchfork at him.

"—I meant to persuade him to go away and get déalcoholisé," Dr Vigil was saying. He stumbled over the word in French and continued in English. "But I was so sick myself that day after the ball that I suffer, physical, really. That is very bad, for we doctors must comport ourselves like apostles. You remember, we played tennis that day too. Well, after I looked the Consul in his garden I sended a boy down to see if he would come for a few minutes and knock my door, I would appreciate it to him, if not, please write me a note, if drinking have not killed him already."

M. Laruelle smiled.

"But they have gone," the other went on, "and yes, I think to ask you too that day if you had looked him at his house."

"He was at my house when you telephoned, Arturo."

"Oh, I know, but we got so horrible drunkness that night before, so perfectamente borracho, that it seems to me, the Consul is as sick as I am." Dr. Vigil shook his head. "Sickness is not only in body, but in that part used to be call soul. Poor your friend he spend his money on earth in such continuous tragedies."

“The storyteller said: Now that the good winds are blowing, now that we’re done with days of anxiety and nights of terror, now that there are no more denunciations, persecutions, secret executions, and whim and madness have departed from the heart of the Empire, and we and our children aren’t playthings of blind power; now that a just man sits on the Golden Throne and people look peacefully out of their doors to see if the weather’s fine and plan their vacations and kids go to school and actors put their heart into their lines and girls fall in love and old men die in their beds and poets sing and jewelers weigh gold behind their little windows and gardeners rake the parks and young people argue and innkeepers water the wine and teachers teach what they know and we storytellers tell old stories and archivists archive and fishermen fish and all of us can decide according to our talents and lack of talents what to do with our life—now anybody can enter the emperor’s palace, out of need or curiosity; anybody can visit that great house which was for so many years forbidden, prohibited, defended by armed guards, locked, and as dark as the souls of the Warrior Emperors of the Dynasty of the Ellydrvides. Now any of us can walk those wide, tapestried corridors, sit down in the courtyards to listen to the fountains run, go into the kitchens and cadge a doughnut from a fat, grinning cook’s helper, pick a flower in the gardens, admire ourself in the mirror galleries, watch maids go by with baskets full of clean laundry, tickle the foot of a marble statue with an irreverent finger, say good morning to the crown prince’s tutors, smile at the princesses playing ball on the lawn; and then go on to the door of the throne room and simply wait our turn to come right up to the emperor and say to him, for instance, “Sir, I love plays, but my town doesn’t have a theater. Do you think you might tell them to build one?”

The Windhover

To Christ our Lord

I CAUGHT this morning morning’s minion, king-

dom of daylight’s dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding

Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding

High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing

In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,

As a skate’s heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding

Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding

Stirred for a bird,—the achieve of; the mastery of the thing!

Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here

Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion

Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!

No wonder of it: shéer plód makes plough down sillion

Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,

Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold-vermillion.

Spring and Fall:

to a Young Child

Margaret, are you grieving

Over Goldengrove unleaving?

Leaves, like the things of man, you

With your fresh thoughts care for, can you?

Ah! as the heart grows older

It will come to such sights colder

By and by, nor spare a sigh

Though worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie;

And yet you will weep and know why.

Now no matter, child, the name:

Sorrow's springs are the same.

Nor mouth had, no nor mind, expressed

What héart héard of, ghóst guéssed:

It is the blight man was born for,

It is Margaret you mourn for.

The Soldier

YES. Why do we áll, seeing of a soldier, bless him? bless

Our redcoats, our tars? Both these being, the greater part,

But frail clay, nay but foul clay. Here it is: the heart,

Since, proud, it calls the calling manly, gives a guess

That, hopes that, makesbelieve, the men must be no less;

It fancies, feigns, deems, dears the artist after his art;

And fain will find as sterling all as all is smart,

And scarlet wear the spirit of wár thére express.

Mark Christ our King. He knows war, served this soldiering through;

He of all can handle a rope best. There he bides in bliss

Now, and séeing somewhére some mán do all that man can do,

For love he leans forth, needs his neck must fall on, kiss,

And cry ‘O Christ-done deed! So God-made-flesh does too:

Were I come o’er again’ cries Christ ‘it should be this’.

Friday

In the wet frame of these windows,

I see a picture of sad Friday.

How black is the mourning clothes it has on,

I see dense clouds in its eyes.

Blood is dripping from the black cloud,

On Fridays blood is dripping, and not rain!

I’m out of breath; Fridays don’t come to an end,

Wish I could close my eyes, but I can’t.

Blood is dripping from the black cloud,

On Fridays blood is dripping, and not rain!

Fridays have lived for thousands years,

Fridays are full of deep sadness,

Man is tired of himself,

And cries with sealed lips,

Blood is dripping from the black cloud,

On Fridays blood is dripping, and not rain!

Friday is the time to leave, the season of forsaking,

Stabs my back with a dragger, the one who is with me,

Blood is dripping from the black cloud,

On Fridays blood is dripping, and not rain

Farm Implements and Rutabagas in a Landscape

The first of the undecoded messages read: "Popeye sits
in thunder,
Unthought of. From that shoebox of an apartment,
From livid curtain's hue, a tangram emerges: a country."
Meanwhile the Sea Hag was relaxing on a green couch: "How
pleasant
To spend one's vacation en la casa de Popeye," she
scratched
Her cleft chin's solitary hair. She remembered spinach

And was going to ask Wimpy if he had bought any spinach.
"M'love," he intercepted, "the plains are decked out
in thunder
Today, and it shall be as you wish." He scratched
The part of his head under his hat. The apartment
Seemed to grow smaller. "But what if no pleasant
Inspiration plunge us now to the stars? For this is my
country."

Suddenly they remembered how it was cheaper in the country.
Wimpy was thoughtfully cutting open a number 2 can of spinach
When the door opened and Swee'pea crept in. "How pleasant!"
But Swee'pea looked morose. A note was pinned to his bib.
"Thunder
And tears are unavailing," it read. "Henceforth shall
Popeye's apartment
Be but remembered space, toxic or salubrious, whole or
scratched."

Olive came hurtling through the window; its geraniums scratched
Her long thigh. "I have news!" she gasped. "Popeye, forced as
you know to flee the country
One musty gusty evening, by the schemes of his wizened,
duplicate father, jealous of the apartment
And all that it contains, myself and spinach
In particular, heaves bolts of loving thunder
At his own astonished becoming, rupturing the pleasant

Arpeggio of our years. No more shall pleasant
Rays of the sun refresh your sense of growing old, nor the
scratched
Tree-trunks and mossy foliage, only immaculate darkness and
thunder."
She grabbed Swee'pea. "I'm taking the brat to the country."
"But you can't do that--he hasn't even finished his spinach,"
Urged the Sea Hag, looking fearfully around at the apartment.

But Olive was already out of earshot. Now the apartment
Succumbed to a strange new hush. "Actually it's quite pleasant
Here," thought the Sea Hag. "If this is all we need fear from
spinach
Then I don't mind so much. Perhaps we could invite Alice the Goon
over"--she scratched
One dug pensively--"but Wimpy is such a country
Bumpkin, always burping like that." Minute at first, the thunder

Soon filled the apartment. It was domestic thunder,
The color of spinach. Popeye chuckled and scratched
His balls: it sure was pleasant to spend a day in the country.

The Ice-Cream Man

Rum and raisin, vanilla, butter-scotch, walnut, peach:

You would rhyme off the flavours. That was before

They murdered the ice-cream man on the Lisburn Road

And you bought carnations to lay outside his shop.

I named for you all the wild flowers of the Burren

I had seen in one day: thyme, valerian, loosestrife,

Meadowsweet, tway blade, crowfoot, ling, angelica,

Herb robert, marjoram, cow parsley, sundew, vetch,

Mountain avens, wood sage, ragged robin, stitchwort,

Yarrow, lady’s bedstraw, bindweed, bog pimpernel.

Eurycleia

I

Eurycleia fetched a basin, poured cold water into it,

Added hot water, and got ready to wash his feet.

But Odysseus shifted out of the firelight, afraid

She might notice his scar, the key to his identity,

A wound a boar inflicted years back, a flesh-wound.

His wet-nurse cradled his foot in her hands and touched

The scar, and recognising him she let go of his leg

Which clattered into the basin — water everywhere,

Such pain and happiness, her eyes filling with tears,

Her old voice cracking as she stroked his beard and whispered

‘You are my baby boy for sure and I didn’t know you

Until I had fondled my master’s body all over.’

II

I began like Odysseus by loving the wrong woman

Who has disappeared among the skyscrapers of New York

After wandering for thousands of years from Ithaca.

She alone remembers the coppice, dense and overgrown,

Where in a compost of dead leaves the boar conceals

Its bristling spine and fire-red eyes and white tusks.

Lied zur Ermutigung III
für Li

Diese Vögel
ohne Schmerzen,
diese leichtesten goldenen
Vögel
dahintreibend
über den Dächern.

Keiner
nach dem andern
fragend.

Ohne Bitte,
ohne Sehnsucht,
sich mischend, sich trennend.

Wir,
unter den Dächern,
uns anklammernd.

Sieh,
die Sonne kehrt
wieder
als goldener Rauch.
Die fallende steigt.
Steigt aus den Dächern Hiobs.
Es tagt
heute
zum zweiten Mal.

Wo steht unser Mandelbaum

Ich liege

in deinen Armen, Liebster,

wie der Mandelkern in der Mandel.
Sag mir: wo steht

unser Mandelbaum?

Ich liege in deinen Armen

wie in einem Schiff,

ohne Route noch Hafen,

aber mit Delphinen am Bug.

Unter unserem Rücken

ein Band von Betten

unsere Betten in den vielen Ländern,

im Nirgendwo der Nacht,

wenn rings ein fremdes Zimmer versinkt.

Wohin wir kamen

- wohin wir kommen, Liebster,

alles ist anders,

alles ist gleich.

Überall wird das Heu

auf andere Weise geschichtet

zum Trocknen

unter der gleichen

Sonne.

Uit: An American Tragedy

„Dusk--of a summer night.

And the tall walls of the commercial heart of an American city of perhaps 400,000 inhabitants--such walls as in time may linger as a mere fable.

And up the broad street, now comparatively hushed, a little band of six,--a man of about fifty, short, stout, with bushy hair protruding from under a round black felt hat, a most unimportant- looking person, who carried a small portable organ such as is customarily used by street preachers and singers.  And with him a woman perhaps five years his junior, taller, not so broad, but solid of frame and vigorous, very plain in face and dress, and yet not homely, leading with one hand a small boy of seven and in the other carrying a Bible and several hymn books.  With these three, but walking independently behind, was a girl of fifteen, a boy of twelve and another girl of nine, all following obediently, but not

too enthusiastically, in the wake of the others.

It was hot, yet with a sweet languor about it all.

Crossing at right angles the great thoroughfare on which they walked, was a second canyon-like way, threaded by throngs and vehicles and various lines of cars which clanged their bells and made such progress as they might amid swiftly moving streams of traffic.  Yet the little group seemed unconscious of anything save a set purpose to make its way between the contending lines of traffic and pedestrians which flowed by them.

Having reached an intersection this side of the second principal thoroughfare--really just an alley between two tall structures—now quite bare of life of any kind, the man put down the organ, which

the woman immediately opened, setting up a music rack upon which she placed a wide flat hymn book.  Then handing the Bible to the man, she fell back in line with him, while the twelve-year-old boy

put down a small camp-stool in front of the organ.“

September

I, from a window where the Meuse is wide,
Looked eastward out to the September night;
The men that in the hopeless battle died
Rose, and deployed, and stationed for the fight;
A brumal army, vague and ordered large
For mile on mile by some pale general,-
I saw them lean by companies to the charge,
But no man living heard the bugle-call.

And fading still, and pointing to their scars,
They fled in lessening clouds, where gray and high
Dawn lay along the heaven in misty bars;
But watching from that eastern casement, I
Saw the Republic splendid in the sky,
And round her terrible head the morning stars.

October

Look, how those steep woods on the mountain's face
Burn, burn against the sunset; now the cold
Invades our very noon: the year's grown old,
Mornings are dark, and evenings come apace.
The vines below have lost their purple grace,
And in Forreze the white wrack backward rolled,
Hangs to the hills tempestuous, fold on fold,
And moaning gusts make desolate all the place.

Mine host the month, at thy good hostelry,
Tired limbs I'll stretch and steaming beast I'll tether;
Pile on great logs with Gascon hand and free,
And pour the Gascon stuff that laughs at weather;
Swell your tough lungs, north wind, no whit care we,
Singing old songs and drinking wine together.

Uit: The Blind Musician (Vertaald door Helen Altschuler)

„A child was born, in the dead of night, to a wealthy family in the South-West Territory. The young mother lay sunk in heavy languor; but when the infant's first cry sounded, low and plaintive, she began to toss feverishly on her bed. Her eyes were shut, but her lips moved, whispering, and her pale face, still soft of outline almost as a child's, twisted as though in suffering and impatient protest—the expression a much-petted child might wear on its first contact with sorrow.

The midwife bent close over the whispering lips.

"Why? Why does he..." the mother asked, almost inaudibly.

The midwife did not understand. Again the child's cry sounded. An expression of bitter suffering passed over the mother's face, and a heavy tear welled from her eyes.

"Why? Why?" she whispered, faintly as before.

This time the midwife understood her question, and answered tranquilly:

"Why the child cries? It's always so. Don't you worry yourself about it."

But the mother was not to be soothed. She started at each new cry, demanding over and over again, with wrathful impatience:

"Why so ... so dreadful?"

The midwife heard nothing out of the ordinary in the child's cries; and the mother, she could see, was hardly conscious—did not, perhaps, even know what she was saying. Turning away from the bed, she busied herself with the infant.

The mother fell silent. Only, now and again, some grievous suffering, finding no outlet in words or movement, pressed great tears from her shut eyes. Through the heavy lashes they seeped, and rolled softly down the marble pallor of her cheeks.

Can the mother's heart have sensed the grim, the unalleviable tragedy that had come into the world with the new-born life—that hung over the infant's cradle, to follow him through all his life, to the very grave?

Or was it, perhaps, no more than delirium? Be that as it may, the child was born blind.“

Uit: My First Day In The Orient

'T is at first a delightfully odd confusion only, as you look down one of them, through an interminable flutter of flags and swaying of dark blue drapery, all made beautiful and mysterious with Japanese or Chinese lettering. For there are no immediately discernible laws of construction or deco-ration: each building seems to have a fantastic prettiness of its own; nothing is exactly like anything else, and all is bewilderingly novel. But gradually, after an hour passed in the quarter, the eye begins to recognise in a vague way some general plan in the construction of these low, light, queerly-gabled wooden houses, mostly unpainted, with their first storeys all open to the street, and thin strips of roofing sloping above each shop-front, like awnings, back to the miniature balconies of paper-screened second storeys. You begin to understand the common plan of the tiny shops, with their matted floors well raised above the street level, and the general perpendicular arrangement of sign-lettering, whether undulating on drapery or glimmering on gilded and lacquered sign-boards. You observe that the same rich dark blue which dominates in popular costume rules also in shop draperies, though there is a sprinkling of other tints, — bright blue and white and red (no greens or yellows). And then you note also that the dresses of the labourers are lettered with the same wonderful lettering as the shop draperies. No arabesques could produce such an effect. As modified for decorative purposes, these ideographs have a speaking symmetry which no design without a meaning could possess. As they appear on the back of a workman's frock — pure white on dark blue — and large enough to be easily read at a great distance (indicating some guild or company of which the wearer is a member or employee), they give to the poor cheap garment a factitious appearance of splendour.“

All the roads led to death,

The mariner

Through the seas in fury raging,
'Neath the skies bow'd down and dark,
Battle with the waves lone waging,
Struggles hopeless now my bark.

But, oh joy! the clouds dividing,
Let my star gleam forth to view;
And in its mild beam confiding,
Gay I sing with courage new.

Herold bright of day before me,
Golden youth-restoring star,
Evil chance aye hangeth o'er me,
When thou beamest low and far.

Yet, when thro' the clouds no beaming
Of thy light comes down to me,
I am lost beyond redeeming,
Without guide on shoreless sea.

“ART, SCIENCE–you seem to have paid a fairly high price for your happiness," said the Savage, when they were alone. "Anything else?"

"Well, religion, of course," replied the Controller. "There used to be something called God–before the Nine Years' War. But I was forgetting; you know all about God, I suppose."

"Well …" The Savage hesitated. He would have liked to say something about solitude, about night, about the mesa lying pale under the moon, about the precipice, the plunge into shadowy darkness, about death. He would have liked to speak; but there were no words. Not even in Shakespeare.

The Controller, meanwhile, had crossed to the other side of the room and was unlocking a large safe set into the wall between the bookshelves. The heavy door swung open. Rummaging in the darkness within, "It's a subject," he said, "that has always had a great interest for me." He pulled out a thick black volume. "You've never read this, for example."

The Savage took it. "The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments," he read aloud from the title-page.

"Nor this." It was a small book and had lost its cover.

"The Imitation of Christ."

"Nor this." He handed out another volume.

"The Varieties of Religious Experience. By William James."

"And I've got plenty more," Mustapha Mond continued, resuming his seat. "A whole collection of pornographic old books. God in the safe and Ford on the shelves." He pointed with a laugh to his avowed library–to the shelves of books, the rack full of reading-machine bobbins and sound-track rolls.

"But if you know about God, why don't you tell them?" asked the Savage indignantly. "Why don't you give them these books about God?"

Uit: The Loop

„He had kept high, shunning the trails, especially those that ran along the water, where sometimes in this season there were humans. Even through the night, wherever it was possible, he had stayed below the timberline, edging the shadows, in a trot so effortless that his paws seemed to bounce without touching the ground. It was as though his journey had some special purpose.

When the sun rose, he stopped to drink, then found a shaded nook high among the sliprock and slept through the heat of the day.

Now, in this final descent to the valley, the going was more difficult. The forest floor was steep and tangled with blowdown, like tinder in some epic fireplace, and the wolf had to weave his way carefully among it. Sometimes he would double back and find a better route so as not to puncture the silence with the telltale snap of a dead branch. Here and there, the sun broke through the trees to make pools of vivid green foliage and these the wolf would always skirt.

He was a prime four-year-old, the alpha of the pack. He was long in the leg and almost a pure black, with just the faintest haze of gray along his flanks and at his throat and muzzle. Now and again he would pause and lower his head to sniff a bush or a tuft of grass, then lift his leg and make his mark, reclaiming this long-lost place as his own. At other times he would stop and tilt his nose to the air and his eyes would narrow and shine yellow as he read the scented messages that wafted on thermals from the valley below.

Once while doing this, he smelled something closer at hand and he turned his head and saw two white-tailed deer, mother and fawn, no more than a dozen yards away, frozen in a shaft of sunlight, watching him. He stared at them, connecting in an ancient communion that even the fawn understood. And for a long moment, all that moved were the spores and insects that spiraled and glinted above the deer’s heads. Then, as if deer and insect were of equal consequence to a wolf, he looked up and again assessed the air.“

Heaven

Like my mother, and my grandmother too,
plus seven generations before them,
I also seek admission to Heaven
which the Moslem party and the Mohammedan
Union say has rivers of milk
And thousands of houris all over.

But there's a contemplative voice inside me,
stubbornly mocking: Do you really think
the blue sea will go dry
--and what about the sly temptations
waiting in every port?
Anyway, who can say for sure
that there really are houris there
with voices as rich and husky as Nina's,
with eyes that flirt like Yati's?

Lilith

„LILITH. They have accepted the burden of eternal life. They have taken the agony from birth; and their life does not fail them even in the hour of their destruction. Their breasts are without milk: Their bowels are gone: the very shapes of them are only ornaments for their children to admire and caress without understanding. Is this enough; or shall I labor again? Shall I bring forth something that will sweep them away and make an end of them as they have swept away the beasts of the garden, and made an end of the crawling things and the flying things and of all them that refuse to live for ever? I had patience with them for many ages: they tried me very sorely. They did terrible things: I stood amazed at the malice and destructiveness of the things I had made: Mars blushed as he looked down on the shame of his sister planet: cruelty and hypocrisy became so hideous that the face of the earth was pitted with the graves of little children among which living skeletons crawled in search of horrible food. The pangs of another birth were already upon me when one man repented and lived three hundred years; and I waited to see what would come of that. And so much came of it that the horrors of that time seem now but an evil dream. They have redeemed themselves from their vileness, and turned away from their sins. Best of all, they are still not satisfied: the impulse I gave them in that day when I sundered myself in twain and launched Man and Woman on the earth still urges them: after passing a million goals they press on to the goal of redemption from the flesh, to the vortex freed from matter, to the whirlpool in pure intelligence that, when the world began, was a whirlpool in pure force. And though all that they have done seems but the first hour of the infinite work of creation, yet I will not supersede them until they have forded this last stream that lies between flesh and spirit, and disentangled their life from the matter that has always mocked it. I can wait: waiting and patience mean nothing to the eternal. I gave the woman the greatest of gifts: curiosity. By that her seed has been saved from my wrath; for I also am curious; and I have waited always to see what they will do tomorrow.“

Le jour à peine écrit

J'aimais la mort. Je le disais. Je l'écrivais sur chaque
feuille blanche.

On m'emportera sans me voir. On dira qu'il fait jour,
que la pluie tombe. On laissera sous la table un vieux
soulier.

Wandelaar

Wandelaar, je sporen
zijn de weg, en zij alleen;

Passages

I

In the blue, the black

flock of birds

calling, flapping, perching

on the frozen poplar.

… On the bare poplar

sombre rooks, still and silent

like cold dark notes

penned on February’s stave.

II

The blue mountain, the river, the tall

copper wands of slender poplars,

and white of almonds on the hill,

oh snow in flower, butterfly on the bough!

With the broad beans’ fragrance the wind

blows over the land’s bright solitude.

Lyautey

On dirait !
On se voit à déjeuner ?
- Okay, Buzz.

Tausend Stare weiter ziehn,

Tausend Lieder jetzt entfliehn.

Auf der Wiese,  die verblüht,

Noch der Himmel einsam glüht,

Wie die Sehnsucht, die nie stirbt

Und um neue Lieder wirbt.

Sitzt  das Herz am rechten Fleck,

Fällt's nicht wie ein Herbstblatt weg.

Wechselt auch der Baum sein Kleid,

Lieb kennt keine Jahreszeit.

Feast

Insane darkness insatiable darkness
casts its black anchor into the cold sea
and spreads out in gruesome waves
then, as an endless vibration
fells marble pillars,
gnaws shapes
mutes kingdoms
tears the clouds
blankets the East
blatantly snatches
light's sidereal milk
and everything goes down the tubes
insatiable darkness
ugly darkness
insane darkness
immense darkness
infinite
