in vlammend vermiljoen blad -

braken in goddelijke gruzelementen

“The Return Of Chorb

The Kellers left the opera house at a late hour. In that pacific German city, where the very air seemed a little lusterless and where a transverse row of ripples had kept shading gently the reflected cathedral for well over seven centuries, Wagner was a leisurely affair presented with relish so as to overgorge one with music. After the opera Keller took his wife to a smart nightclub renowned for its white wine. It was past one in the morning when their car, flippantly lit on the inside, sped through lifeless streets to deposit them at the iron wicket of their small but dignified private house. Keller, a thickset old German, closely resembling Oom Paul Kruger, was the first to step down on the sidewalk, across which the loopy shadows of leaves stirred in the streetlamp's gray glimmer. For an instant his starched shirtfront and the droplets of bugles trimming his wife's dress caught the light as she disengaged a stout leg and climbed out of the car in her turn. The maid met them in the vestibule and, still carried by the momentum of the news, told them in a frightened whisper about Chorb's having called. Frau Keller's chubby face, whose everlasting freshness somehow agreed with her Russian merchant-class parentage, quivered and reddened with agitation.

"He said she was ill?"

The maid whispered still faster. Keller stroked his gray brush of hair with his fat palm, and an old man's frown overcast his large, somewhat simian face, with its long upper lip and deep furrows.

"I simply refuse to wait till tomorrow," muttered Frau Keller, shaking her head as she gyrated heavily on one spot, trying to catch the end of the veil that covered her auburn wig. "We'll go there at once. Oh dear, oh dear! No wonder there's been no letters for quite a month."

Keller punched his gibus open and said in his precise, slightly guttural Russian: "The man is insane. How dare he, if she's ill, take her a second time to that vile hotel?"

Schrijven

voor M.B.

 Bloed verdunnen, weefsels schiften,

 lijm bereiden uit de vis,

 door een stalen wanne ziften

 korreling van dode driften,

 't spinselvocht der ergernis

 stolt erover tot vernis.

 In die glaslaag over asse

 dat de vingernagel krasse,

dat hij als een sprinkhaan kriepe,

 doende alsof een vogel zong.

 Dat de boosheid zich verdiepe:

 schrijven met des vogels tong.

Delphi

I

Navel der aarde Gods. Wij zitten

 en horen sperwers water drinken.

 Dat is alsof metalen klinken

en smelten in een blauwe hitte.

 Een slang, een goddelijke schaamte,

 schuift over schilferende muren,

of ligt te blijven en te duren

 bij kleibaksels en geraamten.

 De droge tepels der kamille

 verpulveren tussen onze lippen.

Het laatst zal ons de smaak ontglippen

 uit de verzadigde papillen.

En dan, uw linker in mijn rechter,

 twee laatste stofveredelingen,

 zijn wij zelf eetbare dingen

 in Gods vuurvaste trechter.

„“Why am I referred here? I don’t have a problem,” I said.
She didn’t react. Just gestured that I remove my shoes and take the couch. She had an office like any other doctor’s, minus the smells and cold, dangerous instruments.
She waited for me to talk more. I hesitated and spoke again.
“I’m sure people come here with big, insurmountable problems. Girlfriends dump their boyfriends everyday. Hardly the reason to see a shrink, right? What am I, a psycho?”
“No, I am the psycho. Psychotherapist to be precise. If you don’t mind, I prefer that to shrink,” she said.
”Sorry,” I said.
“It’s OK,” she said and reclined on her chair. No more than thirty, she seemed young for a shrink, sorry, psychotherapist. Certificates from top US universities adorned the walls like tiger heads in a hunter’s home. Yes, another South Indian had conquered the world of academics. Dr. Neeta Iyer, Valedictorian, Vassar College.
“I charge five hundred rupees per hour,” she said. “Stare at the walls or talk. I’m cool either way.”
I had spent twelve minutes, or a hundred bucks, without getting anywhere. I wondered if she would accept a partial payment and let me leave.”

Watching TV

How strange to be like this, on the sofa, watching my own face making clumsy faces on the screen. The show's not bad but my acting leaves a lot to be desired. I don't recognize my voice; and my gestures seem false, derivative, hardly spontaneous. And the strangest thing, perhaps, is that the show is live.

The Keys of Fate

There are six keys of fate. The golden key is the key to misery. The silver one is the key to pain. That of Chinese copper is the key to death. The iron one is the key to power. The platinum one is the key to happiness and wisdom. The bronze key is the key to the garage.

April

No one's despair is like my despair--

You have no place in this garden

thinking such things, producing

the tiresome outward signs; the man

pointedly weeding an entire forest,

the woman limping, refusing to change clothes

or wash her hair.

Do you suppose I care

if you speak to one another?

But I mean you to know

I expected better of two creatures

who were given minds: if not

that you would actually care for each other

at least that you would understand

grief is distributed

between you, among all your kind, for me

to know you, as deep blue

marks the wild scilla, white

the wood violet.

Confession

To say I'm without fear--

It wouldn't be true.

I'm afraid of sickness, humiliation.

Like anyone, I have my dreams.

But I've learned to hide them,

To protect myself

From fulfillment: all happiness

Attracts the Fates' anger.

They are sisters, savages--

In the end they have

No emotion but envy.

I loved her for that she was beautiful

I loved her for that she was beautiful;
And that to me she seem'd to be all Nature,
And all varieties of things in one:
Would set at night in clouds of tears, and rise
All light and laughter in the morning; fear
No petty customs nor appearances;
But think what others only dream'd about;
And say what others did but think; and do
What others dared not do: so pure withal
In soul; in heart and act such conscious yet
Such perfect innocence, she made round her
A halo of delight. 'Twas these which won me; --
And that she never school'd within her breast
One thought or feeling, but gave holiday
To all; and that she made all even mine
In the communion of love: and we
Grew like each other, for we loved each other;
She, mild and generous as the air in spring;
And I, like earth all budding out with love.

Ode Aux Vents Du Nord

Venez!

Emportez donc mon cœur, emportez donc ma vie

„Black George was, in the main, a peaceable kind of fellow, and nothing choleric nor rash; yet he did bear about him something of what the ancients called the irascible, and which his wife, if she had been endowed with much wisdom, would have feared. He had long experienced, that when the storm grew very high, arguments were but wind, which served rather to increase, than abate it. He was therefore seldom unprovided with a small switch, a remedy of wonderful force, as he had often essayed, and which the word villain served as a hint for his applying.

No sooner, therefore, had this symptom appeared, than he had immediate recourse to the said remedy, which though, as it is usual in all very efficacious medicines, it at first seemed to heighten and inflame the disease, soon produced a total calm, and restored the patient to perfect ease and tranquility.

This is, however, a kind of horse-medicine, which requires a very robust constitution to digest, and is therefore proper only for the vulgar, unless in one single instance, viz., where superiority of birth breaks out; in which case, we should not think it very improperly applied by any husband whatever, if the application was not in itself so base, that, like certain applications of the physical kind which need not be mentioned, it so much degrades and contaminates the hand employed in it, that no gentleman should endure the thought of anything so low and detestable. “

„My godmother lived in a handsome house in the clean and ancient town of Bretton. Her husband's family had been residents there for generations, and bore, indeed, the name of their birthplace—Bretton of Bretton: whether by coincidence, or because some remote ancestor had been a personage of sufficient importance to leave his name to his neighbourhood, I know not.

When I was a girl I went to Bretton about twice a year, and well I liked the visit. The house and its inmates specially suited me. The large peaceful rooms, the well-arranged furniture, the clear wide windows, the balcony outside, looking down on a fine antique street, where Sundays and holidays seemed always to abide--so quiet was its atmosphere, so clean its pavement--these things pleased me well.

One child in a household of grown people is usually made very much of, and in a quiet way I was a good deal taken notice of by Mrs. Bretton, who had been left a widow, with one son, before I knew her; her husband, a physician, having died while she was yet a young and handsome woman.

She was not young, as I remember her, but she was still handsome,  tall, well-made, and though dark for an Englishwoman, yet wearing always the clearness of health in her brunette cheek, and its vivacity in a pair of fine, cheerful black eyes. People esteemed it a grievous pity that she had not conferred her complexion on her son, whose eyes were blue--though, even in boyhood, very piercing--and the colour of his long hair such as friends did not venture to specify, except as the sun shone on it, when they called it golden. He inherited the lines of his mother's features, however; also her good teeth, her stature (or the promise of her stature, for he was not yet full- grown), and, what was better, her health without flaw, and her spirits of that tone and equality which are better than a fortune to the

possessor.“

„Octave s’inquiétait quand la porte de la chambre s’ouvrit d’un mouvement brusque, et l’Empereur parut sur le seuil, dans la pénombre. La ceinture dénouée de sa robe de chambre pendait comme une corde, il avait le corps pris de spasmes, se tenait le ventre d’une main et s’appuyait de l’autre à l’encadrement. Il avait le visage déformé, il grimaçait ;

Uit: A voyage round John Mortimer (Biografie door Valerie Grove)

„As John insisted, their mutual attraction was a youthful crush, not a physical relationship, and looking back after 65 years, Edwards, by now a distinguished retired circuit judge in his 80th year, told me: “John and I had, I suppose, a crush on each other: it didn’t amount to more than that. It was all about nothing!

“We’d been to single-sex public schools, where people form romantic friendships, which are not really quite homosexual. I was not a homosexual, never have been, and neither, the truth is, was John, but he had this idea of romantic friendships. I like to think that what John felt about me was what Tennyson felt for Hallam – elevated, romantic – not what you’d call a homosexual relationship. When we met, it was 40 years since Oscar Wilde died, but something lingered in the Oxford air, and Waugh captured that atmosphere very well in Brideshead Revisited. We would tell stories about Brian Howard, and Ronald Firbank, who was a great one for pottery rings and long pale hands and floppy ties.”

John has never made a secret of his homosexual inclinations at school, even at the Dragon prep school; and “Horatian” activities were rife at single-sex public schools. (When a writer speculated that John might have had “an unpleasant homosexual experience” at Harrow, “which might explain. . . his wariness of men and his adoration of women”, I read this out to John. He gave a whinnying laugh and said: “But I had perfectly pleasant homosexual experiences at Harrow!”)“

Juli 1940 notiert Thomas Mann in seinem Tagebuch:

Promise

Some blue and flowered morning

we shall sweetly go, hand in hand

to listen to the stories the brook whispers

before the amazement of the bare stones . . .

We shall say, love, just one word:

our eyes will speak in their language of magic,

and the curious breeze will arrive quite still

without breaking the spell of the enchanted tour . . .

Afterwards . . . like a bunch of beautiful new grapes

cut from the grapevine by inexpert hands-

I will leave in your mouth with some fear

the ignored flavor of my first kisses . . .

The Splendor

I never knew its name

It could

have been love, a bit

of happiness, or simp-

ly nothing.

But it lighted up

the day in such a way

that its glow

endures.

It endures.

And it burns.

MADAME DOLMAR.

Arrêtez, arrêtez ! voici Alvare.”

Uit: On Seamus Heaney

„Let me take some examples. You quote Heaney saying “And yet, limber and absolved as linguistic inventiveness may seem in poetry, it is not disjunct from or ever entirely manumitted by the critical intelligence.” Like it or not, Heaney has taken pains in the way he’s expressed this tension (“not disjunct from or ever entirely manumitted by”) only to have you flatly ‘translate’ his argument into a “distrust of linguistic ingenuity” and to claim “he places reason above artifice and content before form”. This is a travesty of scholarship — it’s like saying, regardless of what the author actually writes, he means what I want him to mean. Heaney gives due weight to both claims and you say he’s dismissing one of them. You start from a rigid, aprioristic position and blindly ignore even the evidence you adduce.

Your account of Heaney’s dealings with Clare is similarly garbled, and keeps presuming Heaney is promoting his own poetry. You accuse him of arguing “disingenuously” when he claims that “there is more than mere description in Clare’s poetry”. Why should this uncontroversial claim be disingenuous? (Everyone who reads Clare can see there’s a large freight of description, but most of us easily perceive that the description, at least in his best poems, adds up to something a great deal more.)

In your reply to me you refer to Heaney’s “sometimes, dismissive evaluations of other poets”, presumably referring to his account of Dylan Thomas, about which you say he is “again, favouring content over poetic language”. Heaney’s essay is full of praise for Thomas, but there are occasions in which he sees Thomas carried away by the “extravagance of imagery and diction”.
