Uit: Trailerpark

“Even her eyes, which happened to be pale blue, looked red, as if she smoked too much and slept too little, which, as it later turned out, happened to be true. Her body was a little strange, however, and people remarked on that. It was blocky and squareshaped, not exactly feminine and not exactly masculine, so that while she could almost pass for either man or woman, she was generally regarded as neither. Shewore mostly men's clothing, a long, dark blue, wool overcoat or else overalls and workshirts and ankle-high workboots, which again, except for the overcoat, was not all that unusual among certain women who worked outside a lot and didn't do much socializing. But with Flora, because of the shape of her body, or rather, its shapelessness, her clothing only contributed to what you might call the vagueness of her sexual identity. Privately, there was probably no vagueness at all, but publicly there was. People elbowed one another and winked and made not quite kindly remarks about her when she passed by them on the streets of Catamount or when she passed along the trailerpark road on her way to or from town. The story, which came from Marcelle Chagnon, who rented her the trailer and who therefore ought to know, was that Flora was retired military and lived off a small pension, and that made sense in one way, given people's prejudices about women in the military, and in another way too, because at that time Captain Dewey Knox (U.S. Army, ret.) was already living at number 6 and so people at the park had got used to the idea of someone living off a military pension instead of working for a living.”

I do it for my own sake, she thought. It makes no difference what I talk about to her.
She was wrong. Johanna did not understand the words, but she was aware of her daughter's torment and her own powerlessness. She did not remember it was her task to console the child who had always asked unreasonable questions. Still, the demand remained as well as the guilt over her inadequacy.
Her desire was to escape into silence, to close her eyes, but she couldn't, her heart thumping, the darkness behind her eyelids scarlet and painful. She started crying. Embarrassed, Anna tried to console her, there, there, wiping the old woman's cheeks.
When she was unable to halt Johanna's despair, Anna became frightened and rang for help. As usual, there was a delay, then the fair girl was standing in the doorway, a girl with young eyes but no depth in them. Anna saw contempt in those blue eyes, and for a moment Anna could see what the girl saw: an older woman, anxious and clumsy, by the side of the really old one.
"There, there," she said, too, but her voice was hard, as hard as the hand that ran over the old woman's head. And yet she succeeded. Johanna fell asleep so suddenly, it seemed unreal.
"We mustn't upset the patients," said the girl. "You must sit there quietly for a while. We'll come and change her and remake the bed in about ten minutes."
Anna slipped out to the terrace like a shamefaced dog, found her cigarettes, and drew the smoke deep down into her lungs. It calmed her and she could think. At first angry thoughts: damned bitch, hard as nails. Pretty, of course, and horribly young. Had Mother obeyed her out of fear? Was there a discipline here that the helpless old people sensed and gave in to?
Then came the self-reproach. The girl was only doing her job, everything she, Anna, ought to be doing, according to the laws of nature. But she couldn't, couldn't bring herself to, even if the time and place had existed.

“My doctoral research was  still only a few months old when I happened upon a little  book in a flea market in the south of France and immediately decided to plagiarize it.

On the black dust jacket was written in small white letters Les politiques de FLF. Aside from that there was nothing on the front or the back. Quite why I’d picked it up I didn’t know, since although I’d been professionally engaged with the prose of Ferdynand LeFebvre for six months by then, I’d never heard anyone refer to him by anything so familiar as ‘FLF’. I quickly leafed through to the title page, where the subject was rendered more explicitly as Les politiques de Ferdynand LeFebvre.

Underneath was the name of the author: Pierre-Marc Brissot. It meant nothing to me, but given that I hadn’t yet taken proper hold of my research project, that might have been a bibliographical oversight on my part. The book seemed to have the same chapter breakdown as I was planning to use.I couldn’t see the name of a publisher, and the way the text was laid out, simply, soberly, led me to suspect it was a hobbyist’s project. I felt hotter and hotter. I did find a year of publication, 1989, and saw that Mr

Brissot had dedicated the text to the memory of his beloved wife Jeanette, 21 May 1921–14 May 1988. I could picture this Mr Brissot, an elderly, bald academic, slumped in a chair beside his dying wife’s hospital bed, his head full of the camouflaged political messages of Ferdynand LeFebvre.

When I noticed that the book had the very subtitle I was intending to give my dissertation, Sleuth on the steppe, a feeling crept over me of having slipped through a hole in time into a parallel universe where I had a firm grip on my own future. I paid (four euros) and took the book back with me to my parents’ holiday home.”

Uit: Conversation in the Cathedral (Vertaald door Gregory Rabassa)

„1975

Popeye Arévalo had spent the morning on the beach at Miraflores. You look toward the stairs in vain, the neighborhood girls tell him, Teté’s not coming. And as a matter of fact, Teté didn’t go swimming that morning. Defrauded, he went home before noon, but while he was going up the hill on Quebrada he could see Teté’s little nose, her curls, her small eyes, and he grew emotional: when are you going to notice me, when Teté? He reached home with his reddish hair still damp, his freckled face, burning from the sun. He found the senator waiting for him: come here, Freckle Face, they would have a little chat. They shut themselves up in the study and the senator, did he still want to study architecture? Yes, papa, of course he wanted to. Except that the entrance exam was so hard, a whole bunch took it and only a small few got in. But he’d grind and he’d probably get in. The senator was happy that he’d finished high school without failing any courses and since the end of the year he’d been like a mother to him, in January he’d increased his allowance from twenty to forty soles. But even then Popeye didn’t expect so much: well, Freckled Face, since it was hard to get into Architecture, it would be better not to take a chance this year, he could enrol in the prep course and study hard, and that way you’ll get in next year for sure: what did Freckled Face think? Wild, papa, Popeye’s face lighted up even more, his eyes glowed. He’d grind, he’d kill himself studying and the next year he’d get in for sure. Popeye had been afraid of a deadly summer, no swimming, no matinees, no parties, days and nights all soaked up in math, physics and chemistry, and in spite of so much sacrifice, I won’t get in and my vacation will be completely wasted.“

Begraaf mijn hart in Limburg

Begraaf mijn hart in Limburg.

Laat

mijn hoofd voorover vallen van het hakblok

van de slager met zijn zwarte schort. Mijn milt

blijft eeuwig kloppen op het voetbalveld.

Mijn nieren worden opgediend met fijne saus.

Begraaf mijn hart in Limburg. Bak mijn lever in

een mengelmoes van ui, rozijn en kruiderij.

Draai van mijn darmen worst. Doe mijn prostaat aan

rovers van de hand. Vouw mijn geslacht sereen,

onzichtbaar, in de plooien van dit akkerland.

Doe mijn longen maar niet weg. Blaasbalgachtigen.

lege land hun riedel zingen.

Omweg via Winsum

Tamminga, ook ik verloor een zoon.

Toorn richting de hemel, die met zwijgen

werd beloond. Laagtij voor het zware hart.

Weten: niet méér dan ijdel wachten lijkt

dit leven, nu het moet geleefd. Mijn zoon

is droomschuim, rouwkruid, inkt op perkament.

Vaders tronen hoog, hoogmoedig, boven

eigen schepsels uit. De natuur verdraagt

dat niet en straft. Inktwaan, zangdrift,

en het leven in een leeg heelal.

Uit: A Walk on the Wild Side

"He's just a pore lonesome wife-left feller," the more understanding said of Fitz Linkhorn, "losin' his old lady is what crazed him.

"That man is so contrary," the less understanding said, "if you throwed him in the river he'd float upstream."

For what had embittered him Fitz had no name. Yet he felt that every daybreak duped him into waking and every evening conned him into sleep. The feeling of having been cheated-of having been cheated- that was it. Nobody knew why or by whom.

But only that all was lost. Lost long ago, in some colder country. Lost anew by the generations since. He kept trying to wind his fingers about this feeling, at times like an ancestral hunger; again like some secret wound. It was there, if a man could get it out into the light, as palpable as the blood in his veins. Someone just behind him kept turning him against himself till his very strength was a weakness. Weaker men, full of worldly follies, did better than Linkhorn in the world. He saw with eyes enviously

slow-burning.

"I ain't a playin' the whore to no man," he would declare himself, though no one had so charged him.

Six-foot-one of slack-muscled shambler, he came of a shambling race. That gander-necked clan of which Calhoun and Jackson sprang. Jesse James' and Jeff Davis' people.

Lincoln's people. Forest solitaries spare and swart, left landless as ever in sandland and Hooverville now the time of the forests had passed.“

Uit:The Devil Wears Prada

„The light ahead of me blessedly turned red and looked as though it might be a long one. The car jerked to a stop without hitting anyone or anything, and I breathed a sigh of relief. "I'm in the car right now, Miranda, and I should be at the garage in just a few minutes." I figured she was probably concerned that everything was going well, so I reassured her that there were no problems whatsoever and we should both arrive shortly in perfect condition.
"Whatever," she said brusquely, cutting me off midsentence. "I need you to pick up Madelaine and drop her off at the apartment before you come back to the office." Click. The phone went dead. I stared at it for a few seconds before I realized that she'd deliberately hung up because she had provided all of the details I could hope to receive. Madelaine. Who the hell was Madelaine? Where was she at the moment? Did she know I was to pick her up? Why was she going back to Miranda's apartment? And why on earth--considering Miranda had a full-time driver, housekeeper, and nanny--was I the one who had to do it?
Remembering that it was illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving in New York and figuring the last thing I needed at that moment was a run-in with the NYPD, I pulled into the bus lane and switched my flashers on. Breathe in, breathe out, I coached myself, even remembering to apply the parking brake before taking my foot off the regular one. It had been years since I'd driven a stick-shift car--five years, actually, since a high school boyfriend had volunteered his car up for a few lessons that I'd decidedly flunked--but Miranda hadn't seemed to consider that when she'd called me into her office an hour and a half earlier.“

Uit: Odette Toulemonde und andere Geschichten (Vertaald door Inés Köbel)

“Ruhig, Odette, ruhig.

waltet der keichende Herbst. Andere Zeiten sind da;

Chanson

C'est le soir, l'heure du poète,
Le laboureur quitte son champ,
La nature devient muette
Aux splendeurs du soleil couchant.

Là-bas, au pied de la colline,
Sur un lit mouflu de gazon,
S'arrête Rose l'orpheline,
Pour voir les feux de l'horizon.

C'est une fille de Bohème
Qui traîne son mauvais destin ;
Sa voix a la grâce suprême,
Quand elle a jeûné le matin !

Un chasseur, battant la pâture,
Vient à passer sur son chemin ;
Soudain la pauvre créature
Se lève en lui tendant la main.

Si blanche était la main de Rose !
Sentant ses lèvres s'embraser,
Le jeune chasseur y dépose
L'aumône du cœur : — un baiser.

De Oorlogsidioot

(Shellshock)

Aan 't hooge huis, aan het trottoir,
wat afwaarts van den boulevard;
op 't zelfde plekje neergekromd,
daar, waar de zon maar zelden komt,
zit d'oorlogsidioot op wacht
en lacht, omdat men om hem lacht.

Zijn handen dwalen door de lucht,
als één die tast, wanneer hij vlucht.
Zijn oogen kijken als een kind,
dat ziet en nog geen namen vindt.
Hij grinnikt over alles wee.
De kindren om hem lachen mee.

Men wandelt langs hem als langs steen.

Uit: Call Me the Breeze

„He spent about a month on it, beavering away in his room. When he was finished, he presented it to me: 'The magnificent Joey Tallon Archibe!' he says.

But there could be no doubt about it -- he really had done a terrific job. In place of the leatherette holdall, a neat little stack of marbled box files containing all my notebooks and ledgers.

I've had a really good time going through it. And if I was any kind of writer at all, I'd have made something worthwhile out of it, instead of just sitting here rambling half the night, filling up pages with discursive nonsense. I mean, it's not as if enough didn't happen!

Particularly during the seventies, when the old leatherette holdall found itself very much favoured -- particularly by anonymous men who had a predilection for leaving it behind them in crowded public houses.

Campbell Morris

Although somehow you always felt that in a small border town like Scotsfield nothing serious would ever really happen. That most of what you heard was talk and would never amount to anything much.

But that was before the 'Campbell Morris Incident'. Campbell was a salesman who happened to drop by for the Lady of the Lake festival but ended up getting himself killed. It's impossible to say who started the rumours about him.

Either way it ended with him being pulled out of the reservoir and the cops going apeshit, raiding pubs. It wasn't my business. I was too busy getting on with my life, pulling pints and thinking about Jacy. She was all I ever thought about in those days.

'He was a fucking spy! And that's it!' you'd hear them shouting late at night, full of guilt over what they had done. There had been six or seven of them involved, I think.

'How about we go out to The Ritzy?' they'd said, as the salesman drunkenly grinned. 'You'll see things out there that you'd never come across in Dublin or London.'

„The northern landscape like the desert makes for absolutism. Except that in the north the desert is green and full of water. And there are no temptations, no roundnesses or curves. The land is flat, which makes people extremely visible, and that in turn is visible in their behavior. The Dutch are not much for contact; they are for confrontation. They bore their luminous eyes into those of another and weigh his soul. They have no hiding places. Not even their houses. They leave their curtains open and consider it a virtue.
Cees Nooteboom

I don't remember when I first noticed it. I'd be standing at a tram stop waiting for a tram, staring at the map of the city in the glass case, at the color-coded bus and tram routes that I didn't understand and that were of little or no interest to me at the time, standing there without a thought in the world when suddenly, out of the blue, I'd be overcome by a desire to bash my head into the glass and do myself harm. And each time I'd come closer to it. Here I go, any second now, and then . . .

"Come now, Comrade," he would say in a slightly mocking tone, laying a hand on my shoulder. "You're not really going to . . . ?"

It's all my imagination, of course, but the picture it creates can be so real that I actually think I'm hearing his voice and feeling his hand on my shoulder.

People say that the Dutch speak only when they have something to say. In this city, where I'm surrounded by Dutch and communicate in English, I often perceive my native language as alien. Not until I found myself abroad did I notice that my fellow countrymen communicate in a kind of half language, half swallowing their words, so to speak, and uttering semi-sounds. I experience my native language as an attempt by a linguistic invalid to convey even the simplest thought through gestures, grimaces, and intonations. Conversations among my compatriots seem long, exhausting, and devoid of content. Instead of talking, they seem to be stroking each other with words, spreading a soothing, sonorous saliva over one another.“

Uit: Five by Endo : Stories (Vertaald door Van C. Gessel)

“Yet the night he read the Confessions, Suguro felt as though a more responsive chord had been struck within him than with any other history of the Christian era he had encountered. Every study he had read was little more than a string of paeans to the noble acts of priests and martyrs and common believers inspired by faith. They were without exception chronicles of those who had sustained their beliefs and their testimonies no matter what sufferings or tortures they had to endure. And each time he read them, Suguro had to sigh, `There's no way I can emulate people like this.'

He had been baptized as a child, along with the rest of his family. Since then he had passed through many vicissitudes and somehow managed to arrive in his forties without rejecting his religion. But that was not due to firm resolve or unshakeable faith. He was more than adequately aware of his own spiritual slovenliness and pusillanimity. He was certain that an unspannable gulf separated him from the ancient martyrs of Nagasaki, Edo and Unzen who had effected glorious martyrdoms. Why had they all been so indomitable?

Suguro diligently searched the Christian histories for someone like himself. But there was no one to be found. Finally he had stumbled across the Christian Confessions one day in a second-hand bookshop, and as he flipped indifferently through the pages of the book, he had been moved by the account of a man whose name Collado had concealed. The man had the same feeble will and tattered integrity as Suguro. Gradually he had formed in his mind an image of this man — genuflecting like a camel before the priest nearly three hundred years earlier, relishing the almost desperate experience of exposing his own filthiness to the eyes of another.

`I stayed for a long time with some heathens. I didn't want the innkeeper to realize I was a Christian, so I went with him often to the heathen temples and chanted along with them. Many times when they praised the gods and buddhas, I sinned greatly by nodding and agreeing with them. I don't remember how many times I did that. Maybe twenty or thirty times — more than twenty, anyway.“

Paris (Fragment)

Its no use writing between the lines if youre only
Paid for the lines themselves.

City Nightfall

SMOKE upon smoke; over the stone lips
Of chimneys bleeding, a darker fume descends.
Night, the old nun, in voiceless pity bends
To kiss corruption, so fabulous her pity.
All drowns in night. Even the lazar drowns
In earth at last, and rises up afresh,
Married to dust with an Infanta's flesh—
So night, like earth, receives this poisoned city,
Charging its air with beauty, coasting its lanterns
With mains of darkness, till the leprous clay
Dissolves, and pavements drift away,
And there is only the quiet noise of planets feeding.
And those who chafe here, limed on the iron twigs,
No greater seem than sparrows, all their cries,
Their clockwork and their merchandise,
Frolic of painted dolls. I pass unheeding.

Night

Over the garden the moons tide tumbles;

Shrubs are shaken by gusts and tremblings;

Pathways ribbon with sudden dissemblings

Towards the threshold where false foot stumbles.

Out of the soil of midnight, tender,

Lift my arms white tendrils and, weaving,

Motion to someone shadowy and absent,

Someone who tarries somewhere, perhaps may not be existent.

Oh, do I fear the days of torrid splendour,

Nights full of flowers? Oh, do I fear when I see that

These would not yield to the ultimate depths of my choosing?

My heart is breaking little by little

As a ripe pomegranate, skin parched brittle,

Breaks: full loving is prelude to losing.

Cords are unknotted, the covers have parted,

And I rise winged from where I have smarted.

Oh, do I fear now what heart discloses,

All these desires in fevered legions?

And shall I gather the pure cold roses,

Open and waiting in those white regions,

Towards which the days have died and the nights have faded,

And my blue sail wafts a burning soul that has loved as they

Did?

Carentan O Carentan

Trees in the old days used to stand

And shape a shady lane

Where lovers wandered hand in hand

Who came from Carentan.

This was the shining green canal

Where we came two by two

Walking at combat-interval.

Such trees we never knew.

The day was early June, the ground

Was soft and bright with dew.

Far away the guns did sound,

But here the sky was blue.

The sky was blue, but there a smoke

Hung still above the sea

Where the ships together spoke

To towns we could not see.

Could you have seen us through a glass

You would have said a walk

Of farmers out to turn the grass,

Each with his own hay-fork.

The watchers in their leopard suits

Waited till it was time,

And aimed between the belt and boot

And let the barrel climb.

I must lie down at once, there is

A hammer at my knee.

And call it death or cowardice,

Don't count again on me.

Everything's all right, Mother,

Everyone gets the same

At one time or another.

It's all in the game.

I never strolled, nor ever shall,

Down such a leafy lane.

I never drank in a canal,

Nor ever shall again.

There is a whistling in the leaves

And it is not the wind,

The twigs are falling from the knives

That cut men to the ground.

Tell me, Master-Sergeant,

The way to turn and shoot.

But the Sergeant's silent

That taught me how to do it.

O Captain, show us quickly

Our place upon the map.

But the Captain's sickly

And taking a long nap.

Lieutenant, what's my duty,

My place in the platoon?

He too's a sleeping beauty,

Charmed by that strange tune.

Carentan O Carentan

Before we met with you

We never yet had lost a man

Or known what death could do.

Uit: Was mein Herz begehrt (Vertaald door Eta Neumann-Veith u. Andrea Seidler)

Elegy To A Lost Youth

Oh sweet wife, your comfort's dead -

can't even raise his wrinkled head,

who was rampant night and day:

a stallion eager for the fray.

Alas! alack! O woe is me!

My mount is useless, as you see.

He who stood proud and erect

now can't command the least respect.

A feral beast only last year,

village women made him rear

up when they showed a comely thigh

- and on he charged to do, not die.

He pranced through Europe east to west,

and always gave his perky best

to Irish red-heads, dusky Roms,

wispy maidens, buxom moms.

He'd make a seamstress lose her needle,

doll-like duchesses he'd wheedle,

tempt a cowgirl off the farm.

Feisty fishwives he could charm!

There was not a breed he missed

from trousered Tosk to dirndled Swiss

on pristine Alpine peaks -

even pious, racist Greeks -

until they yielded up their crannies,

(he cheered up many lonely grannies).

In France he had amazing luck:

queues would form to have a suck -

and when he went to Istanbul

great grown men desired that tool!

(They didn't get it, but perhaps

I should have gratified those chaps...)

Oh, my poor neglected wife

your husband's manhood has no life,

can't give you pleasure any more

as once it did till it was sore.

A prominent, popular swell,

what he did he did right well.

Now old age has come to this:

he peeps out only for a piss.

wird deine Gluth vor den getrübten Sinnen;
