In uw handen

Steeds weer komt boven zij verdrinkt

in jouw droom

die steeds bovenkomt, mij onderduwt
Blijven verdrinken, blijven lachen
terwijl ik niet lach. De steen malend

Geluidloos lied dat zinkt in mijn hoofd
Blijven roepen onder water
zonder dat er ochtend kwam

Take me to the river

Uit: Who Fears Death

„My life fell apart when I was sixteen. Papa died. He had such a strong heart. Yet he died. Was it the heat and smoke from his blacksmithing shop? It’s true that nothing could take him from his work, his art. He loved to make the metal bend and obey him. But his work only seemed to strengthen him; he was so happy in his shop. So what was it that killed him? To this day I can’t be sure. I hope it had nothing to do with me or what I did back then.
Immediately after he died, my mother came running out of their bedroom sobbing and throwing herself against the wall. I knew then that I would be different. I knew in that moment that I would never again be able to fully control the fire inside me. I became a different creature that day, not so human. Everything that happened later, I now understand started then.
The ceremony was held on the outskirt of town, before the sand dunes. It was the middle of the day and terribly hot. His body lay on thick white cloth, surrounded by a garland of braided palm fronds. I knelt there in the sand before his body, saying my last goodbye. I’ll never forget his face. It didn’t look like Papa’s anymore. Papa’s skin was dark brown, his lips were full. This face had sunken cheeks, deflated lips and skin like grey brown paper. Papa’s spirit had gone elsewhere.

The back of my neck prickled. My white veil was a poor protection from people’s ignorant and fearful eyes. By this time, everyone was always watching me. I clenched my jaw. Around me, women were on their knees weeping and wailing. Papa was dearly loved, despite the fact that he’d married my mother, a woman with a daughter like me- an Ewu daughter. That had long been excused as one of those mistakes even the greatest man can make. Over the wailing, I heard my mother’s soft whimper. She had suffered the greatest loss.“

Uit: The Lacuna

„Isla Pixol, Mexico, 1929

In the beginning were the howlers. They always commenced their bellowing in the first hour of dawn, just as the hem of the sky began to whiten. It would start with just one: his forced, rhythmic groaning, like a saw blade. That aroused others near him, nudging them to bawl along with his monstrous tune. Soon the maroon-throated howls would echo back from other trees, farther down the beach, until the whole jungle filled with roaring trees. As it was in the beginning, so it is every morning of the world.

The boy and his mother believed it was saucer-eyed devils screaming in those trees, fighting over the territorial right to consume human flesh. The first year after moving to Mexico to stay at Enrique’s house, they woke up terrified at every day’s dawn to the howling. Sometimes she ran down the tiled hallway to her son’s bedroom, appearing in the doorway with her hair loose, her feet like iced fish in the bed, pulling the crocheted bedspread tight as a web around the two of them, listening.

It should have been like a storybook here. That is what she’d promised him, back in the cold little bedroom in Virginia North America: if they ran away to Mexico with Enrique she could be the bride of a wealthy man and her son would be the young squire, in a hacienda surrounded by pineapple fields. The island would be encircled with a shiny band of sea like a wedding ring, and somewhere on the mainland was its gem, the oil fields where Enrique made his fortune.“

Uit: The Road to Los Angeles

„I became a flunkie on a truck. All we did was move boxes of toilet tissue from the warehouse to the harbor grocery stores in San Pedro and Wilmington. Big boxes, three feet square and weighing fifty pounds apiece. At night I lay in bed thinking about it and tossing.
My boss drove the truck. His arms were tattooed. He wore tight yellow polo shirts. His muscles bulged. He caressed them like a girl's hair. I wanted to say things that would make him writhe. The boxes were piled in the warehouse, fifty feet to the ceiling. The boss folded his arms and had me bring boxes down to the truck. He stacked them. Arturo, I said, you've got to make a decision; he looks tough, but what do you care?
That day I fell down and a box bashed me in the stomach. The boss grunted and shook his head. He made me think of a college football player, and lying on the ground I wondered why he didn't wear a monogram on his chest. I got up smiling. At noon I ate lunch slowly, with a pain where the box bashed me. It was cool under the trailer and I was lying there. The lunch hour passed quickly. The boss came out of the warehouse and saw my teeth inside a sandwich, the peach for dessert untouched at my side.
"I ain't paying you to sit in the shade," he said.
I crawled out and stood up. The words were there, ready. "I'm quitting," I said. "You and your stupid muscles can go to hell. I'm through."
"Good," he said. "I hope so."
        "I'm through."
        "Thank God for that."
        "There's one other thing."
        "What?"
"In my opinion you're an overgrown sonofabitch."
        He didn't catch me.
After that I wondered what had happened to the peach. I wondered if he had stepped on it with his heel. Three days passed and I went down to find out. The peach lay untouched at the side of the road, a hundred ants feasting upon it.“

Uit: The Shootist

„He thought: When I get there nobody will believe I could have managed a ride like this and neither by God will I.

It was noon of a bodeful day. The sun was an eye bloodshot by dust. His horse was fistulowed. Some friction saddle and hide, of thorn or stone or knot of thread, had created an abscess on the withers, deep and festering, the cure for which he knew was to cauterize and let the air heal by staying off the animal, but he could not stop. If the horse had suffered, he had suffered more. This was the ninth day of his ride, and the last.

He wore a gray Stetson, a black Prince Albert coat, gray vest and trousers, white shirt, gray bow tie, and boots of black lizard.

Between his backside and the saddle throat was stuffed a soft pillow of crimson velvet trimmed with golden tassels. He could not have endured the journey without the pillow. He had stolen it in Creede, Colorado, from a whorehouse.

He rode below the Organs, a bleak range trending south and east, over sand flats wrinkled with dry washes. Tied on behind his saddle were a black valise and a porcelain coffeepot. The lid of the pot had clanked monotonously all morning. He stopped and turning slowly, untied the coffeepot, turned again and hurled it as high into the air as he was able. He meant to draw and fire and riddle it before it hit the ground, but the effort of hurling roused such pain in his groins that he could not draw. He slumped, gripped the pommel, as the pot hit the ground and tumbled down the side of a dry wash, clanking, clanking.

There were many bosques, or thickets, now and he detoured them. But the trail required him to pass between two, and as he did, a man jumped from the brush and leveled an antiquated cap-and-ball pistol and croaked at him to throw down his wallet. The man was thin and elderly and reminded the horseman of his grandfather, who had been driven occasionally to desperate undertakings. He had a claw hand for a left hand, cocked perpetually at the wrist, the fingers stiff and splayed. Reining up, the rider reached inside his coat.“

Uit: Die unendliche Straße

»Hagen?«

Ich wusste schon, was mich meine Mutter fragen würde.

Malte schrie immer weiter.

Je me croirais un riche avoir ;

Comme Pétrarque aux pieds de son idole,

A vos genoux courbé bien bas, bien bas,

Mon cœur s'enivrerait enfin ;

Souriez-lui, marchez fière à son bras ;

Grab und Bahre warten nicht;

Wer die Rosen jetzo bricht,

Dem ist der Kranz bescheret.

Unsers Lebens schnelle Flucht

Leidet keinen Zügel,

Und des Schicksals Eifersucht

Macht ihr stetig Flügel.

Zeit und Jahre fliehn davon,

Und vielleichte schnitzt man schon

An unsers Grabes Riegel.

Wo sind diese, sagt es mir,

Die vor wenig Jahren

Eben also, gleich wie wir,

Jung und fröhlich waren?

Ihre Leiber deckt der Sand,

Sie sind in ein ander Land

Aus dieser Welt gefahren.

Wer nach unsern Vätern forscht,

Mag den Kirchhof fragen;

Ihr Gebein, so längst vermorscht,

Wird ihm Antwort sagen.

Kann uns doch der Himmel bald,

Eh die Morgenglocke schallt,

In unsre Gräber tragen.

Unterdessen seid vergnügt,

Laßt den Himmel walten,

Trinkt, bis euch das Bier besiegt,

Nach Manier der Alten!

Fort! Mir wässert schon das Maul,

Und, ihr andern, seid nicht faul,

Die Mode zu erhalten.

Dieses Gläschen bring ich dir,

Daß die Liebste lebe

Und der Nachwelt bald von dir

Einen Abriss gebe.

Setzt ihr andern gleichfalls an,

Und wenn dieses ist getan,

So lebt der edlen Rebe.

Evening On Calais Beach

It is a beauteous evening, calm and free,

The holy time is quiet as a Nun

Breathless with adoration; the broad sun

Is sinking down in its tranquility;

The gentleness of heaven broods o'er the sea:

Listen! the mighty Being is awake,

And doth with his eternal motion make

A sound like thunder -- everlastingly.

Dear Child! dear Girl! that walkest with me here,

If thou appear untouch'd by solemn thought,

Thy nature is not therefore less divine:

Thou liest in Abraham's bosom all the year;

And worshipp'st at the Temple's inner shrine,

God being with thee when we know it not.

London, 1802

Milton! thou shouldst be living at this hour:

England hath need of thee: she is a fen

Of stagnant waters: altar, sword, and pen,

Fireside, the heroic wealth of hall and bower,

Have forfeited their ancient English dower

Of inward happiness. We are selfish men;

Oh! raise us up, return to us again;

And give us manners, virtue, freedom, power.

Thy soul was like a Star, and dwelt apart:

Thou hadst a voice whose sound was like the sea:

Pure as the naked heavens, majestic, free,

So didst thou travel on life's common way,

In cheerful godliness; and yet thy heart

The lowliest duties on herself did lay.

Mutability

From low to high doth dissolution climb,

And sink from high to low, along a scale

Of awful notes, whose concord shall not fail;

A musical but melancholy chime,

Which they can hear who meddle not with crime,

Nor avarice, nor over-anxious care.

Truth fails not; but her outward forms that bear

The longest date do melt like frosty rime,

That in the morning whiten'd hill and plain

And is no more; drop like the tower sublime

Of yesterday, which royally did wear

His crown of weeds, but could not even sustain

Some casual shout that broke the silent air,

Or the unimaginable touch of Time.

Uit: Fiona G. Parrot: Friendship, Letters and Butterflies: Victoria Ocampo and Virginia Woolf

„Much of Ocampo’s writings are peppered with commentary on Woolf’s work. In both Carta a Virginia Woolf and Virginia Woolf en su diario, she explores Woolf’s fiction, drawing comparisons with English and Argentine culture through Three Guineas: ‘The maid, Virginia observes in Three Guineas, had an important role in the life of the English upper classes (and the same was true in Argentina) until the onset of the war in 1914’ (Steiner 159). Ocampo writes directly to her audience, linking the class systems of Argentina and England. By analysing the texts and drawing comparisons to her own culture, Ocampo made Woolf’s writings more accessible to South American readers. In the same essay, she connects South America’s patriarchal fathers to A Room of One’s Own and Three Guineas, explaining how both novels ‘are the true history of the Victorian struggle between the victims of the patriarchal system and the patriarchs, between the daughters and the fathers and brothers. Virginia ended up by telling these despots: Consider, reason, reflect for a moment’ (Steiner 160). In discussing the topic of ‘the patriarchal system and the patriarchs,’ Ocampo not only enables her own culture to experience the work of Woolf but exposes it to her corresponding ideas with the hope of progressive change for all women. Because both writers’ backgrounds involved domineering fathers and patriarchal cultures, which expected them to uphold repressive social rules, Ocampo believed strongly in these issues and it was yet another connection she experienced with Woolf, a connection she cherished and wished to share with her readers.“

Anniversary

And we go on and on,

Neither sleeping nor awake,

Towards the meeting, unaware

That we are already there.

That the silence is perfect,

And that the flesh is gone.

The call still is not heard

Nor does the Caller reveal his face.

But perhaps this might be

Oh, my love, the gift

Of the eternal Face without gestures

And of the kingdom without form!

Those Who Do Not Dance

A crippled child

Said, “How shall I dance?”

Let your heart dance

We said.

Then the invalid said:

“How shall I sing?”

Let your heart sing

We said

Then spoke the poor dead thistle,

But I, how shall I dance?”

Let your heart fly to the wind

We said.

Then God spoke from above

“How shall I descend from the blue?”

Come dance for us here in the light

We said.

All the valley is dancing

Together under the sun,

And the heart of him who joins us not

Is turned to dust, to dust.

Uit: King of Jazz

“Well I'm the king of jazz now, thought Hokie Mokie to himself as he oiled the slide on his trombone. Hasn't been a 'bone man been king of jazz for many years. But now that Spicy MacLammermoor, the old king, is dead, I guess I'm it. Maybe I better play a few notes out of this window here, to reassure myself.

"Wow!" said somebody standing on the sidewalk. "Did you hear that?"

"I did," said his companion.

"Can you distinguish our great homemade American jazz performers, each from the other?"

"Used to could."

"Then who was that playing?"

"Sounds like Hokie Mokie to me. Those few but perfectly selected notes have the real epiphanic glow."

"The what?"

"The real epiphanic glow, such as is obtained only by artists of the caliber of Hokie Mokie, who's from Pass Christian, Mississippi. He's the king of jazz, now that Spicy MacLammermoor is gone."

Hokie Mokie put his trombone in its trombone case and went to a gig. At the gig everyone fell back before him, bowing.

"Hi Bucky! Hi Zoot! Hi Freddie! Hi George! Hi Thad! Hi Roy! Hi Dexter! Hi Jo! Hi Willie! Hi Greens!"

"What we gonna play, Hokie? You the king of jazz now, you gotta decide."

"How 'bout `Smoke'?"

"Wow!" everybody said. "Did you hear that? Hokie Mokie can just knock a fella out, just the way he pronounces a word. What a intonation on that boy! God Almighty!"

"I don't want to play `Smoke,' " somebody said.

"Would you repeat that stranger?"

"I don't want to play `Smoke.' `Smoke' is dull. I don't like the changes. I refuse to play `Smoke.' "

"He refuses to play `Smoke'! But Hokie Mokie is the king of jazz and he says `Smoke'!"

"Viermal seit heute mittag."

Uit: Niels Lyhne (Vertaald door Hanna Astrup Larsen)

“SHE had the black, luminous eyes of the Blid family, with delicate, straight eyebrows; she had their boldly shaped nose, their strong chin, and full lips. The curious line of mingled pain and sensuousness about the corners of her mouth was likewise an inheritance from them, and so were the restless movements of her head. But her cheek was pale, her hair was soft as silk and was wound smoothly around her head.

Not so the Blids; their coloring was of roses and bronze. Their hair was rough and curly, heavy as a mane, and their full, deep, resonant voices bore out the tales told of their forefathers, whose noisy hunting parties, solemn morning prayers, and thousand and one amorous adventures were matters of family tradition.

Her voice was languid and colorless. I am describing her as she was at seventeen. A few years later, after she had been married, her voice gained fullness, her cheek took on a fresher tint, and her eye lost some of its luster, but seemed even larger and more intensely black.

At seventeen she did not at all resemble her brothers and sisters; nor was there any great intimacy between herself and her parents. The Blid family were practical folk who accepted things as they were; they did their work, slept their sleep, and never thought of demanding any diversions beyond the harvest home and three or four Christmas parties. They never passed through any religious experiences, but they would no more have dreamed of not rendering unto God what was God's than they would have neglected to pay their taxes. Therefore they said their evening prayers, went to church at Easter and Whitsun, sang their hymns on Christmas Eve, and partook of the Lord's Supper twice a year.“

"Oh - mir - fehlt nichts. Und Vater ist sehr, sehr wohl."

"Na, was sollte dem Alten fehlen?
