Uit: Back to live

„She didn't know if it was the wine, or if it was his mouth on hers, but her head was spinning. He'd kissed her, and just as she'd try to catch her breath, he'd kiss her again and again. He held her hands, stroked her face. She felt the roughness of his hands against her cheeks. She felt those hands on her body, contrasting against the softness of the leather couch under them. Her very clothing seemed confining. What the fuck are you doing to me? " Shit," she whispered.

He linked and relaxed his fingers with hers. " Lisa," he laughed. " You feel so good."

" I aim to please," she giggled against his mouth.

" I like your aim," he grinned.

He moved to roll on top of her, and she turned on her back to accept him. Unfortunately, she overshot the end of the couch and landed smack on the carpeted floor. She giggled and giggled, even when she saw his face hovering over her, even when he lay on top of her, muscles and sinews pressing against her. But he wasn't laughing. He had that familiar look she'd seen many times. He kissed her, and she felt his hands against her belly, fingers reaching below the elastic of her tights. And there was that enormous myth-defying erection pressing against her thigh. Sense memory from that horrible night intruded just then. I can't do this.

She pushed him away. " Wait, wait, wait," she gasped. " Wait!"

She sat up, trying to clear the fog in her head. The CD had stopped, the fire burning down. She held her head in her hands. Fucking Bryan. She doubted memories of her interfered with his nights with his fiancée, the lovely Mia. She lifted her head to see him looking at her, smiling. Far from pissed, he seemed okay. He took her hands, linking her fingers between hers. " Why are you staring at me?" she asked.

He laughed. " Because you're pretty."

She looked away. Speak up, girl; you have an English tongue in your head! " Look, I..." she quietly began.

" He hurt me. Bad. I really like you, but I need to take this real slow."

Guck dir diesen Fußboden an!

wonach solche Menschen riechen.

en zette dieren op het droge land;

Zij schoven zinloos langs verweerde epitafen

Dat iemand dacht: dit is de ware dood;

Uit: Return to Pleasant Valley

„In the first weeks after I came home I never thought about my father's friend, old Walter Oakes. Indeed I had very nearly forgotten his existence. And then one day I heard Wayne, one of the boys on the farm, say something about My Ninety Acres, and I remembered it all and asked, "is Walter Oakes still alive?"

"Alive!" said Wayne, "I'll say he's alive. The liveliest old man in the county. You ought to see that place. Brother, that's the kind of farm I'd like to own. He raises as much on it as most fellows raise on five times that much land."

Wayne, of course, was only 20. He couldn't know how once people had laughed when Walter Oakes spoke proudly of My Ninety Acres. Clearly they didn't laugh any more. Clearly Walter Oakes was the best farmer in all the county, very likely the best farmer in all the rich Ohio country.

The next Sunday I walked over the hills to My Ninety Acres. As I came down the long hill above the farm I saw it hadn't changed much. The house still looked well painted and neat with its white walls and green shutters, and the barn was a bright, new, prosperous red.

As I walked down the hill I thought, "This is the most beautiful farm in America—the most beautiful, rich farm in the world—My Ninety Acres."

The corn stood waist high and vigorous and green, the oats thick and strong, the wheat already turning a golden yellow. In the meadow the bumblebees were working on clover that rose almost as high as a man's thighs.

I pushed open the little gate and walked into the dooryard with the neatly mown grass bordered by lilacs and peonies and day lilies ... I remembered enough to know I should find old Walter somewhere in the fields. Sunday afternoon he always spent walking over the place. As a small boy I had followed him and my father many times.“

Uit: The House That George Built

„The huge, nonnegotiable gap between then and now is that in the past, music and dancing had always been disciplined by something or other. There had always been rules for doing it right, and even the wildest flights of swing and swing dancing had rested on a bed of piano lessons and dance lessons, and dress codes as well. Cab Calloway in a zoot suit was still a dressy man, a dandy; Cab Calloway in jeans or shorts over his knees would not have been dressed at all in the old sense. Going out dancing used to be an event, like going to church. Today all that remains are the rituals of prom night, which must seem weirder every year.

The era might also be measured in demographics or political cycles or even weather patterns. But the brilliant strand of music that, running through Irving Berlin and George Gershwin, has become the music of the standards began with a bang-with pianos being hoisted into tenements, a magnificent and noisy event, and it ended with guitars being schlepped quietly, almost parenthetically, into ranch houses and split-levels to herald the arrival of the great non-event that has been with us ever since.

But first the bang, then the whimper. There was no way of receiving such an impressive object as a piano quietly in such close quarters. Whether it bounced up the staircase or jangled its way over the fire escape and in through the window, the neighbors knew about it all right, and would be reminded again every time Junior hit the keys and shook the building. Short of a Rolls-Royce or carriage and horses, there was never such a status symbol, with the consequence that although "all the families around us were poor," said Harry Ruby, "they all had pianos." For such important matters, time-payments were born.“

„Depressed. In the hospital. Taking big red Wellbutrin pills but still depressed. Mom and Dad's 45th anniversary-I made the call-no I didn't-they called me cause I'm the sick one in the hospital. Their sick child. Their dying boy. When my mother calls and tells me I sound like I'm getting better I tell her no, not really, not yet. I'm almost rude to her about it. No, I'm not. I'm not better. I'm not ready to be better, so stop making me better already. And of course I spend the whole day feeling guilty about cutting her off because she was feeling so good that I might be feeling better, but I'll make it up to her-tomorrow I will be better, even though I just now spit up a big wad of blood-I'll still be better, just you wait and see.

Again by the dim light of the television, dim Bob whines as Sheree snores, but I can't hear the TV cause I don't want to hear Sheree, so I've got ear plugs in, which is frustrating because I'd like to hear bald Dennis Hopper talking to Tom Snyder, but I can't stand the sound of Sheree's snoring-I mean I really can't stand it. It unnerves me. I'm the worst snorer in the world, but she doesn't know it cause she's out and I'm up-always up. A nervous wreck. Anti-depressants. Anti-anxiety. Vicodin. Steroids. Feel like crying all the time. I don't want to go on this trip to Boston and Berlin. Gave every last ounce of energy to "Visiting Hours" in New York. Can't give any more. But I'm doing it. I'm hating it, and I'm doing it. I took the ear plugs out-one earplug so I could hear the TV with one ear, but all I can hear is Sheree-I love her, I want to be with her, but that sound! Argh! It makes me want to scream.“

Ghazal 2

It's a little hard for things to be easy
when even a man can’t act like a man

What stupidity makes me so dependent on her that an hour early
I run off to see her and get annoyed when she's not there

My lover is so striking she demands to be seen
the mirror reflects what it can then widens its eye

I have taken to grave the deep scar of happiness
while she stands above in her hundred colors

She promised not to torment me only after killing me
repenting now this woman so quick to repent.

Ghazal 3

In the baseness of desire remember
her who has entranced our every sight

Life could have passed on but no
we remember always where the beloved has walked

Those streets are in my thoughts again
where I first lost my heart too young to recall

What sudden madness a lover's madness is
in the air of the desert I remember my home

As a boy I almost threw stones at that crazed lover
trapped always in desire but at last I remembered

Carl Zuckmayer an Gottfried Bermann Fischer, Januar 1939

Was Du hast, hast Du!«

Maximus, to himself

Charles OlsonI have had to learn the simplest things

last. Which made for difficulties.

Even at sea I was slow, to get the hand out, or to cross

a wet deck.

The sea was not, finally, my trade.

But even my trade, at it, I stood estranged

from that which was most familiar. Was delayed,

and not content with the man’s argument

that such postponement

is now the nature of

obedience,

               that we are all late

               in a slow time,

               that we grow up many

               And the single

               is not easily

               known

It could be, though the sharpness (the achiote)

I note in others,

makes more sense

than my own distances. The agilities

               they show daily

               who do the world’s

               businesses

               And who do nature’s

               as I have no sense

               I have done either

I have made dialogues,

have discussed ancient texts,

have thrown what light I could, offered

what pleasures

doceat allows

               But the known?

This, I have had to be given,

a life, love, and from one man

the world.

               Tokens.

               But sitting here

I look out as a wind

               and water man, testing

               And missing

               some proof

I know the quarters

of the weather, where it comes from,

where it goes. But the stem of me,

this I took from their welcome,

or their rejection, of me

               And my arrogance

               was neither diminished

               nor increased,

               by the communication

2

It is undone business

I speak of, this morning,

with the sea

stretching out

from my feet

Uit: An Andalusian Duel (Vertaald door Emilia Pardo-Bazan)

„Through the little square of St. Anna, towards a certain tavern, where the best wine is to be quaffed in Seville, there walked in measured steps two men whose demeanor clearly manifested the soil which gave them birth. He who walked in the middle of the street, taller than the other by about a finger's length, sported with affected carelessness the wide, slouched hat of Ecija, with tassels of glass beads and a ribbon as black as his sins. He wore his cloak gathered under his left arm; the right, emerging from a turquoise lining, exposed the merino lambskin with silver clasps. The herdsman's boots--white, with Turkish buttons,--the breeches gleaming red from below the cloak and covering the knee, and, above all, his strong and robust appearance, dark curly hair, and eye like a red-hot coal, proclaimed at a distance that all this combination belonged to one of those men who put an end to horses between their knees and tire out the bull with their lance.

He walked on, arguing with his companion, who was rather spare than prodigal in his person, but marvelously lithe and supple. The latter was shod with low shoes, garters united the stockings to the

light-blue breeches, the waistcoat was cane-colored, his sash light green, and jaunty shoulder-knots, lappets, and rows of buttons ornamented the carmelite jacket. The open cloak, the hat drawn over

his ear, his short, clean steps, and the manifestations in all his limbs and movements of agility and elasticity beyond trial plainly showed that in the arena, carmine cloth in hand, he would mock at the

most frenzied of Jarama bulls, or the best horned beasts from Utrera.

I--who adore and die for such people, though the compliment be not returned--went slowly in the wake of their worships, and, unable to restrain myself, entered with them the same tavern, or rather eating-house, since there they serve certain provocatives as well as wine, and I, as my readers perceive, love to call things by their right name.“

Sonnets At Christmas I

This is the day His hour of life draws near,

Let me get ready from head to foot for it

Most handily with eyes to pick the year

For small feed to reward a feathered wit.

Some men would see it an epiphany

At ease, at food and drink, others at chase

Yet I, stung lassitude, with ecstasy

Unspent argue the season's difficult case

So: Man, dull critter of enormous head,

What would he look at in the coiling sky?

But I must kneel again unto the Dead

While Christmas bells of paper white and red,

Figured with boys and girls spilt from a sled,

Ring out the silence I am nourished by.

Sonnets At Christmas II

Ah, Christ, I love you rings to the wild sky

And I must think a little of the past:

When I was ten I told a stinking lie

That got a black boy whipped; but now at last

The going years, caught in an accurate glow,

Reverse like balls englished upon green baize-

Let them return, let the round trumpets blow

The ancient crackle of the Christ's deep gaze.

Deafened and blind, with senses yet unfound,

Am I, untutored to the after-wit

Of knowledge, knowing a nightmare has no sound;

Therefore with idle hands and head I sit

In late December before the fire's daze

Punished by crimes of which I would be quit.

Uit: Me Talk Pretty One Day

„Anyone who watches even the slightest amount of TV is familiar with the scene: An agent knocks on the door of some seemingly ordinary home or office. The door opens, and the person holding the knob is asked to identify himself. The agent then says, "I'm going to ask you to come with me."
They're always remarkably calm, these agents. If asked "Why do I need to go anywhere with you?" they'll straighten their shirt cuffs or idly brush stray hairs from the sleeves of their sport coats and say, "Oh, I think we both know why."
The suspect then chooses between doing things the hard way and doing things the easy way, and the scene ends with either gunfire or the gentlemanly application of handcuffs. Occasionally it's a case of mistaken identity, but most often the suspect knows exactly why he's being taken. It seems he's been expecting this to happen. The anticipation has ruled his life, and now, finally, the wait is over. You're sometimes led to believe that this person is actually relieved, but I've never bought it. Though it probably has its moments, the average day spent in hiding is bound to beat the average day spent in prison. When it comes time to decide who gets the bottom bunk, I think anyone would agree that there's a lot to be said for doing things the hard way.
The agent came for me during a geography lesson. She entered the room and nodded at my fifth-grade teacher, who stood frowning at a map of Europe. What would needle me later was the realization that this had all been prearranged. My capture had been scheduled to go down at exactly 2:30 on a Thursday afternoon. The agent would be wearing a dung-colored blazer over a red knit turtleneck, her heels sensibly low in case the suspect should attempt a quick getaway.
"David," the teacher said, "this is Miss Samson, and she'd like you to go with her now."

„John ran through the list: a mood stabilizer, an antianxiety drug, and an antidepressant, all at good doses. I picked up a pen and pad from my desk.
"Diagnosis?"
John told me, and I wasn't surprised. "Fortunately for us, he signed a release of information in the ER while he was still talking. We've also just gotten copies of records from a psychiatrist in North Carolina he saw about two years ago. Apparently the last time he saw anybody."
"Does he have significant anxiety?"
"Well, he won't talk about it, but I think he shows it. And this isn't his first round of meds, according to the file. In fact, he arrived here with some Klonopin in a two-year-old bottle in his jacket. It probably wasn't doing him much good without a mood stabilizer on board. We finally got hold of the wife in North Carolina — ex-wife, actually — and she told us some more about his past treatments."
"Suicidal?"
"Possibly. It's hard to do a proper assessment, since he won't talk. He hasn't attempted anything here. He's more like enraged. It's like keeping a bear in a cage — a silent bear. But with this kind of presentation, I don't want to just release him. He's got to stay somewhere for a while, have someone figure out what's really going on, and his meds will need fine-tuning. He did sign in voluntarily, and I bet he'll go pretty willingly at this point. He doesn’t like it here."
"So you think I can get him to talk?" It was our old joke, and John rose obligingly to it.
"Marlow, you could get a stone to talk."
"Thanks for the compliment. And thanks especially for messing up my lunch break. Does he have insurance?"
"Some. The social worker is on that."

"All right — have him brought out to Goldengrove. Tomorrow at two, with the files. I'll check him in."

Uit: The Colossus of Maroussi

"I got into my things and hurried to the restaurant near the fountain. The waiter seemed to expect me and stood ready to translate for me into that Iroquois English which the itinerant Greek has acquired in the course of his wanderings. I ordered some cold fish with the skin on it and a bottle of dark-red Cretan wine. While waiting to be served I noticed a man peering through the large plate-glass window; he walked away and came back again in a few minutes. Finally he made his mind up to walk in. He walked directly up to my table and addressed me -- in English. Was I not Mr. Miller who had arrived by plane a few hours ago? I was. He begged leave to introduce himself. He was Mr. So-and-So, the British Vice-Consul at Herakleion. He had noticed that I was an American, a writer. He was always happy to make the acquaintance of an American. He paused for a moment, as if embarrassed, and then went on to say that his sole motive for introducing himself was to let me know that as long as I remained in Crete, I was to consider his humble services entirely at my disposal. He said that he was originally from Smyrna and that every Greek from Smyrna was eternally indebted to the American people. He said that there was no favour too great for me to ask of him.
x x"The natural reply was to ask him to sit down and share a meal with me, which I did. He explained that he would be unable to accept the honour as he was obliged to dine in the bosom of his family, but -- would I do him the honor of taking a coffee with him and his wife at their home after dinner? As the representative of the great American people (not at all sure of the heroic role we had played in the great disaster at Smyrna) I most graciously accepted, rose, bowed, shook his hand and escorted him to the door where once again we exchanged polite thanks and mutual felicitations.

Einsicht

Dreifach sind wir angepisst:
Feigheit, Blödheit, Agonie.
Was noch nicht erstunken ist,
wird bestaunt als wie

"Bitte recht freundlich!",
sprach der Jäger den Hasen an.
Aus der doppelläufigen Flinte
flatterten piff-paff zwei Vögelchen.

"Immer über das Ziel hinaus!",
lachte der Hase, schlug einige Haken,
kam zwar spät nach Haus, aber
immerhin lebendig.

Uit: The Kingdom of This World (Vertaald door Harriet de Onís)

"Now he understood that a man never knows for whom he suffers and hopes. He suffers and hopes and toils for people he will never know, and who, in turn, will suffer and hope and toil for others who will not be happy either, for man always seeks a happiness far beyond that which is meted out to him. But man's greatness consists in the very fact of wanting to be better than he is. In laying duties upon himself. In the Kingdom of Heaven there is no grandeur to be won, inasmuch as there all is an established hierarchy, the unknown is revealed, existence is infinite, there is no possibility of sacrifice, all is rest and joy. For this reason, bowed down by suffering and duties, beautiful in the midst of his misery, capable of loving in the face of afflictions and trials, man finds his greatness, his fullest measure, only in the Kingdom of this World."

The Lost Dancer

Spatial depths of being survive

The birth to death recurrences

Of feet dancing on earth of sand;

Vibrations of the dance survive

The sand; the sand, elect, survives

The dancer. He can find no source

Of magic adequate to bind

The sand upon his feet, his feet

Upon his dance, his dance upon

The diamond body of his being.

A Certain Man

A certain man wishes to be a prince

Of this earth; he also wants to be

A saint and master of the being-world.

Conscience cannot exist in the first:

The second cannot exist without conscience.

Therefore he, who has enough conscience

To be disturbed but not enough to be

Compelled, can neither reject the one

Nor follow the other...

Je fluisterde ‘t me teder in:

In eeuwig schone liefdeszon
Toen jij zo even van me wegging

Leise Stunde

Was willst du mir denn sagen,

Du grüner, lachender Frühlingstag?

Die muntern Drosseln schlagen

Wie trunken nah im dunkeln Hag.

Mein Acker scheint zu träumen,

Ganz still ist's unter den Bäumen,

Ich hör' der leisen Stunde Schlag.

Sie kommt mit jedem Lenze,

Steigt auf wie ein versunken Gut,

Fern an der Kindheit Grenze

Wandl' ich in treuer Augen Hut.

Ein Duft liegt über den Weiten,

Die heimlichen Glocken läuten:

Du hast es gut, du hast es gut!

Ich seh' der Mutter Hände,

Verwerkt und hart – und doch so weich!

Sie müht sich ohne Ende

Und gibt und gibt und bleibt doch reich.

In Ackers Grund geborgen

Schläft ihr Segnen und Sorgen

Und macht ihn mir zum Märchenreich.

Waldmärchen

Viel liebe Wunder birgt der Wald,

Doch keins, das mich so hold betört

Wie eines Vögleins Schlummerlied,

Dem nichts den Abendfrieden stört.

Schon ist ihm wie ein Traum entrückt

Der laute Tag mit Glück und Not,

Leis zittert um sein Laubversteck

Der Sonne letztes, blasses Rot.

Und reiner, süsser quillt der Sang,

Indes gemach das Gold zerrinnt;

Uit: The Treason of the Intellectuals (Vertaald door Richard Aldington)

„The man of science, the artist, the philosopher are attached to their nations as much as the day-laborer and the merchant. Those who make the world's values, make them for a nation; the Ministers of Jesus defend the national. All humanity including the "clerks," have become laymen. All Europe, including Erasmus, has followed Luther.
I said above that the humanity of the past, more precisely the humanity of Europe in the Middle Ages, with the values imposed upon it by the "clerks," acted ill but honored the good. It may be said that modern Europe with teachers who inform it that its realist instincts are beautiful, acts ill and honors what is ill. Modern Europe is like the brigand in one of Tolstoi's stories, who made his confession to a hermit, and the hermit said in amazement: "Others were at least ashamed of being brigands; but what is to be done with this man, who is proud of it?"
Indeed, if we ask ourselves what will happen to a humanity where every group is striving more eagerly than ever to feel conscious of its own particular interests, and makes its moralists tell it that it is sublime to the extent that it knows no law but this interest—a child can give the answer. This humanity is heading for the greatest and most perfect war ever seen in the word, whether it is a war of nations, or a war of classes. A race of which one group exalts one of its masters (Barrès) to the skies because he teaches: "We must defend the essential part of ourselves as sectarians," while a neighboring group acclaims a leader because, when he attacks a defenseless small nation, he says, "Necessity knows no law"— such a race is ripe for the zoölogical wars Renan talks about, which, he said, would be like the life and death wars which occur among rodents and among the carnivora.“

- Mille trois cents, environ.

The Fatal Sisters (Fragment)

Now the storm begins to lower,

(Haste, the loom of Hell prepares!)

Iron-sleet of arrowy shower

Hurtles in the darkened air.

Glittering lances are the loom,

Where the dusky warp we strain,

Weaving many a soldier's doom,

Orkney's woe and Randver's bane.

See the grisly texture grow,

('Tis of human entrails made!)

And the weights that play below,

Each a gasping warrior's head.

Shafts for shuttles, dipped in gore,

Shoot the trembling cords along.

Sword, that once a monarch bore,

Keep the tissue close and strong.

Mista, black, terrific maid,

Sangrida, and Hilda, see,

Join the wayward work to aid;

'Tis the woof of victory.

Ere the ruddy sun be set,

Pikes must shiver, javelins sing,

Blade with clattering buckler meet,

Hauberk crash, and helmet ring.

(Weave the crimson web of war!)

Let us go, and let us fly

Where our friends the conflict share,

Where they triumph, where they die.

As the paths of fate we tread,

Wading through the ensanguined field,

Gondula and Geira, spread

O'er the youthful king your shield.

Ruf zu Gott

Du, der Licht war vor meinem Tage,
Du, der Klang war vor meiner Klage
In der Gestirne Jubelgesang;

Und es wehen die Lüfte des Lebens,
Und es fliehn die Schauer des Bebens,
Du bist Vater, ich wieder dein Sohn.

Herbstlied

Bunt sind schon die Wälder,

Gelb die Stoppelfelder,

Und der Herbst beginnt.

Rote Blätter fallen,

Graue Nebel wallen,

Kühler weht der Wind.

Wie die volle Traube,

Aus dem Rebenlaube,

Purpurfarbig strahlt!

Am Geländer reifen

Pfirsiche mit Streifen

Rot und weiß bemalt.

Sieh! Wie hier die Dirne

Emsig Pflaum¹ und Birne

In ihr Körbchen legt!

Dort, mit leichten Schritten,

Jene goldne Quitten

In den Landhof trägt!

Flinke Träger springen,

Und die Mädchen singen,

Alles jubelt froh!

Bunte Bänder schweben,

Zwischen hohen Reben,

Auf dem Hut von Stroh!

Geige tönt und Flöte

Bei der Abendröte

Und im Mondenglanz

Junge Winzerinnen

Winken und beginnen

Deutschen Ringeltanz.

Uit: Cruel As The Grave

„Near the end of a dark autumn-day, not many years ago, a young couple, returning from their bridal tour arrived by steamer at the old city of Norfolk; and, taking a hack, drove directly to the best inn.

They were attended by the gentleman's valet and the lady's maid, and encumbered besides with a great amount of baggage, so that altogether their appearance was so promising that the landlord of the "Anchor" came forward in person to receive them and bow them into the best parlor.

The gentleman registered himself and his party as Mr. and Mrs. Lyon Berners, of Black Hall, Virginia, and two servants.

"We shall need a private parlor and chamber communicating for our own use, and a couple of bedrooms for our servants," said Mr. Berners, as he handed his hat and cane to the bowing waiter.

"They shall be prepared immediately," answered the polite landlord.

"We shall remain here only for the night, and go on in the morning, and should like to have two inside and two outside places secured in the Staunton stage-coach for to-morrow."

"I will send and take them at once, sir."

"Thanks. We should also like tea got ready as soon as possible in our private parlor."

"Certainly, sir. What would you like for tea?"

"Oh, anything you please, so that it is nice and neatly served," said Mr. Berners, with a slightly impatient wave of his hand as if he would have been rid of his obsequious host.

"Ah-ha! anything I please! It is easy to see what ails him. He lives upon love just now; but he'll care more about his bill of fare a few weeks hence," chuckled the landlord, as he left the public parlor to

execute his guest's orders.“

La bourrasque d'été (Fragment)

Les cris de la corneille ont annoncé l'orage ;

Des nuages monter dans les airs embrasés ;
