Georg Trakl werd op 3 februari 1887 in het conducteurshuis aan de Waagplatz 2 in Salzburg geboren. Zijn vader, Tobias Trakl, was een handelaar in ijzerwaren en zijn moeder, die ook psychische problemen had, was Maria Catharina Trakl, (meisjesnaam Halik). Voorts had hij nog drie broers en drie zussen. Margarethe (doorgaans Grethe genoemd) stond hem het naast, zelfs zodanig dat sommigen een incestueuze verhouding vermoeden. Zijn jeugd bracht hij door in Salzburg. Vervolgens bezocht hij van 1897 tot 1905 het humanistische gymnasium. Om toch een academische opleiding te kunnen volgen, werkte hij tot 1908 in de praktijk bij een apotheker. Sommigen vermoedden dat hij dit vooral deed om zichzelf opiaten te kunnen verschaffen. Bij het uitbreken van WO I werd Trakl als medicus naar het front in Galicië (heden ten dage in Oekraïne en Polen) gestuurd. Zijn gemoedsschommelingen leidden tot geregelde uitbraken van depressie, die verergerd werden door de afschuw die hij voelde voor de verzorging van de ernstig verwonde soldaten. De spanning en druk dreven hem ertoe een suïcidepoging te ondernemen, welke zijn kameraden nochtans verhinderden. Hij werd in een militair ziekenhuis opgenomen in Kraków, alwaar hij onder strikt toezicht geplaatst werd.Trakl verzonk daar in nog zwaardere depressies en schreef Ficker om advies. Ficker overtuigde hem ervan dat hij contact moest opnemen met Wittgenstein, die inderdaad op weg ging na Trakls bericht te hebben ontvangen. Op 4 november 1914, drie dagen voordat Wittgenstein aan zou komen, overleed hij echter aan een overdosis cocaïne
Paul Celan
Paul Celan werd onder de naam Paul Antschel op 23 november 1920 geboren in Czernowitz, toentertijd de hoofdstad van de Roemeense Boekovina, nu behorend bij de Oekraïne. Paul Celans ouders waren Duitssprekende joden die hun zoon joods opvoedden en hem naar Duitse christelijke scholen stuurden. In 1942 werden Celans ouders door de Duitse bezetter naar een werkkamp gedeporteerd en daar vermoord. Hijzelf wist aanvankelijk onder te duiken, maar moest vanaf juli 1942 in een werkkamp dwangarbeid verrichten. Celan overleefde de oorlog. Via Boekarest en Wenen vestigde Celan zich in 1948 in Parijs. Daar was hij werkzaam als dichter, vertaler en doceerde hij aan de prestigieuze Ecole Normale Supérieure. Vermoedelijk op 20 april 1970 beëindigde hij zijn leven zelf door in de Seine te springen.
Gerard Reve
Gerard Reve over: Medearbeiders ”God is in de mensen, de dieren, de planten en alle dingen - in de schepping, die verlost moet worden of waaruit God verlost moet worden, door onze arbeid, aangezien wij medearbeiders van God zijn.” Openbaring ”Tja, waar berust elk godsbegrip op, elke vorm van religie? Op een openbaring, dat wil zeggen op een psychische ervaring van zulk een dwingende en onverbiddelijke kracht, dat de betrokkene het gevoel heeft, niet dat hij een gedachte of een visioen heeft, maar dat een gedachte gedachte of visioen hem bezit en overweldigt.”
Simon Vestdijk
Simon Vestdijk (Harlingen, 17 oktober 1898 – Utrecht, 23 maart 1971) was een Nederlands romancier, dichter, essayist en vertaler. Zijn jeugd te Harlingen en Leeuwarden beschreef hij later in de Anton Wachter-cyclus. Van jongs af aan logeerde hij regelmatig bij zijn grootouders in Amsterdam, waar hij zich in 1917 aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam inschrijft als student in de medicijnen. Tijdens zijn studie die van 1917 tot 1927 duurde, leerde hij Jan Slauerhoff kennen.Tot 1932 is hij als arts in praktijken door heel Nederland werkzaam. In 1932 volgt zijn officiële schrijversdebuut met de uitgave van de bundel Verzen in De Vrije Bladen. Doorslaggevend voor Vestdijks uiteindelijke keuze voor de literatuur is zijn ontmoeting in 1932 met Eddy Du Perron en Menno ter Braak. Deze ontmoeting had tot resultaat dat hij redactielid werd van het tijdschrift Forum Kort daarop, in 1933, wordt zijn eerste novelle, De oubliette, uitgegeven. In hetzelfde jaar schrijft hij Kind tussen vier vrouwen, dat, eerst geweigerd door de uitgever, later de basis zal vormen voor de eerste drie delen van de Anton Wachter-romans. In 1951 ontvangt Vestdijk de P.C. Hooftprijs voor zijn in 1947 verschenen roman De vuuraanbidders. In 1957 wordt hij voor het eerst door het PEN-centrum voor Nederland voorgedragen voor de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur, die hij echter nooit zal krijgen. Op 20 maart 1971 wordt hem de Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren toegekend, maar voor hij deze kan ontvangen overlijdt hij op 23 maart te Utrecht op 72-jarige leeftijd. Vestdijk was auteur van ca. 200 boeken. Vanwege deze enorme productie noemde de dichter Adriaan Roland Holst hem 'de man die sneller schrijft dan God kan lezen'. Andere belangrijke boeken van Simon Vestdijk zijn: "Kind van stad en land" (1936), "Meneer Visser's hellevaart" (1936), "Ierse nachten" (1946), "De toekomst de religie" (1947), "Pastorale 1943" (1948), "De koperen tuin" (1950), "Ivoren wachters" (1951), "Essays in duodecimo" (1952) en "Het genadeschot" (1964).
K.P. Kavafis K.P. Kavafis werd als kind van Griekse ouders, afkomstig uit Konstantinopel, geboren in 1863 in Alexandrië (tot vandaag een Griekse enclave) waar hij ook het grootste deel van zijn leven woonde en werkte. Twee jaar na de dood van zijn vader verhuist het gezin in 1872 naar Engeland om na een verblijf van vijf jaar naar Alexandrië terug te keren. Vanwege ongeregeldheden in Egypte vlucht het gezin in 1882 naar Konstantinopel, om na drie jaar opnieuw naar Alexandrië terug te gaan. In de jaren die volgen maakt Kavafis reizen naar Parijs, Londen en in 1901 zijn eerste reis naar Griekenland, in latere jaren gevolgd door nog enkele bezoeken. Op de dag van zijn zeventigste verjaardag, in 1933 sterft Kavafis in Alexandrië. De roem kwam voor Kavafis pas na zijn dood, dus postuum. Deels is dat toe te schrijven aan zijn eigen handelswijze. Hij was uiterst terughoudend met de publicatie van zijn gedichten, liet af en toe een enkel gedicht afdrukken in een literair tijdschrift, gaf in eigen beheer enkele bundels met een stuk of twintig gedichten uit en het merendeel van zijn poëzie schonk hij op losse bladen aan zijn beste vrienden.
Thomas Mann
Thomas Mann, de jongere broer van Heinrich Mann, werd geboren op 6 juni 1875 in Lübeck. Hij was de tweede zoon van de graankoopman Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann welke later één van de senatoren van Lübreck werd. Zijn moeder Julia (geboren da Silva-Bruhns) was Duits-Braziliaans van Portugees Kreoolse afkomst. In 1894 debuteerde Thomas Mann met de novelle "Gefallen". Toen Thomas Mann met 21 jaar eindelijk volwassen was en hem dus geld van zijn vaders erfenis toestond - hij kreeg ongeveer 160 tot 180 goldmark per jaar - besloot hij dat hij genoeg had van al die scholen en instituties en werd onafhankelijk schrijver. Kenmerkend voor zijn stijl zijn de ironie, de fenomenale taalbeheersing en de minutieuze detailschildering. Manns reputatie in Duitsland was sterk wisselend. Met zijn eerste roman, Buddenbrooks (1901), had hij een enorm succes, maar door zijn sceptische houding tegenover Duitsland na de Eerste Wereldoorlog veranderde dit volledig. Stelde hij zich tot aan de jaren twintig apolitiek op (Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen, 1918), meer en meer raakte hij bij het Politiek gebeuren betrokken. Zijn afkeer van het nationaal socialisme groeide, zijn waarschuwingen werden veelvuldiger en heftiger. In 1944 accepteerde hij het Amerikaanse staatsburgerschap. Tussen 1943 en 1947 schreef Mann Doktor Faustus (zie Faust), de roman van de 'Duitse ziel' in de gecamoufleerd geschilderde omstandigheden van de 20ste eeuw. In 1947 bezocht hij voor het eerst sinds de Oorlog Europa, twee jaar later pas Duitsland. In 1952 vertrok hij naar Zwitserland. Op 12 augustus 1955 stierf hij in Zürich. Twintig jaar na zijn dood, in aug. 1975, is zijn literaire nalatenschap geopend: dagboekaantekeningen van 15 maart 1933 tot 29 juli 1955, alsmede notities uit de jaren 1918 tot en met 1921.Belangrijke werken zijn: Der Zauberberg, Der Tod in Venedig, Dokter Faustus , Joseph und seine Brüder en Die Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull.
Rainer Maria Rilke
Rilke werd op 4 december 1875 geboren in Praag. Hij had al naam gemaakt als dichter met zijn bundels Das Stundenbuch en Das Buch der Bilder, toen hij de literaire wereld versteld deed staan en wereldfaam verwierf met de publicatie van zijn twee delen Neue Gedichte in 1907 en 1908. Hij verzamelde daarin het beste werk uit een van zijn vruchtbaarste periodes, die hij grotendeels doorbracht in Parijs. Rilke was daar diep onder de indruk gekomen van Rodin, bij wie hij een tijdlang in dienst was als particulier secretaris. Rodin, zei hij later, had hem leren kijken. Dit kijken kwam neer op intense concentratie, om het mysterie te kunnen zien ‘achter de schijnbare werkelijkheid'. Latere en rijpere werken als Duineser Elegien (1912-1923) en het ronduit schitterende Die Sonette an Orfeus (1924) illustreren Rilkes metafysische visie op het onzegbare, dat haar verwoording vindt in een hermetische muzikale taal. Op 29 december 1926 overlijdt Rilke in het sanatorium in Val-Mont aan de gevolgen van leukemie. Enkele dagen later wordt hij, overeenkomstig zijn wens, begraven op het kerkhof van Raron.

Evenzeer als wij het nauwgezette zwemmen en metallic blauwe van een kleine Afrikaanse vis te Emmen vanmiddag, waterlelieblad dat zich met rode kop optrekt tot waterschildpadschild, een dagpauwoog in de vlindertuin die mijn hand voor wilde orchis aanziet en heel Drenthe buiten evenzeer.

Hevige aandrang te eggen of te gieren? Een tractor te kopen? Nuchtere kalveren voor de mesterij?
Red één ongeschoren schaap bij nacht en ontij uit de sloot, bekijk het liefste varken op worstkwaliteit, eet
twaalf sneeën zelfverbouwd roggebrood. En vergeet niet bij rooien of poten op klompen te lopen en overal bij.
Meestal waait het dan wel over. En anders ben je onherroepelijk geboren voor de boerderij.

Walter John de la Mare (25 april 1873 – 22 juni 1956) In 1924
“Then there was the MGM movie that appeared in 1957 with the billing that here was an epic to out do Gone with the Wind. The novel had won an enormous prize given by Loew's Incorporated in 1947 but was shelved in 1949. With the advent of TV and other problems, the company went into a disastrous slump in 1947-48. They were also having trouble coming up with a script, and the young author's suicide may have been a damper of sorts. In 1954 it was dusted off and the task of writing the script was given to Millard Kaufman, creator of the cartoon character Mr. Magoo. In late August of 1956 my mother invited herself and the kids down to Danville, Kentucky, where an army of movie staffers was encamped for a summer of shooting. Indiana no longer looked enough like itself and to its dismay had been passed over in the location search. Montgomery Clift was still recovering from an automobile accident in May that interrupted shooting for six weeks. Leaving a party at Elizabeth Taylor's home in the Benedict Canyon hills, he had driven into a telephone pole, losing two front teeth, cutting a hole through his upper lip, and breaking his nose and jaw. He refused to drop out of the film, and, in constant pain, kept a gray satchel full of pills by his side. He stumbled through the rest of the film mostly in right profile; the left was lumpy and inert. In his off-camera life in recent weeks he had faked his own bloody death, run naked into the streets of Danville after a nightmare, broken a toe, and badly burned two fingers with a cigarette while out cold from an accidental overdose of sleeping pills. Enter the Lockridge family hopeful of finding in Clift someone capable of playing John Shawnessy, who in many ways resembles his creator. I shook the hand of someone bent over, fidgety, gaunt, bloodshot, and much older than his thirty-five years. His efforts were heroic, but still the great actor mumbled, moved his wired jaw with difficulty, forgot his lines, and seemed by turns manic and drugged. The crew was shooting a scene that featured Shawnessy and Susanna Drake, the neurotic heroine played by Elizabeth Taylor. Both were lying drunk on the banks of the Shawmucky River following Shawnessy's great victory in the Raintree County footrace.”

Mal bist du dir voraus – mal rennst du hinter dir her und siehst deinen mit jeder Sekunde kleiner werdenden Rücken. Die Straße führt zum Horizont, wo die Häuser nur Punkte sind. Plötzlich bist du verschwunden, bist unerreichbar geworden. Du drehst dich um. Jemand läuft auf dich zu. Du! Du fliehst. Sturz
Du öffnest das Fenster. Obwohl es heller Tag ist, siehst du in tiefe Schwärze. Dennoch springst du, wie du es dir vorgenommen hast. Ein Blitz erschreckt dich: Hinter deinem Rücken zerflammt dein Haus. Die Schwärze scheint sich im Sturz zu verdichten, bis sie dich schwerelos wie eine Mauer umschließt. Nog altijd had de meneer niets in het boek geschreven, maar dat zou nu toch wel moeten, dacht men. En wat hij er dan van maken zou! En zij met haar mooi engelengezichtje en schuchtere manieren! Het was een curieus geval, een verzamelpunt voor de leege nieuwsgierigheid en het wekte alle gedachten, die zulk een verhouding van een ouden verliefden rijkaard en een arm, mooi meisje, dat zich prostitueert, pleegt te wekken bij de menschen, die de wereld meer uit boeken, dan uit eigen aanzien kennen. In her sunny kitchen, my Grandma Lucy would fashion honey- drenched Armenian pastries, while out in the backyard Grampa Megerdich roasted lamb shish kebab under the apple trees. After dessert, Grampa might knock back a tiny glass of arak and tell me stories. I was held rapt by the horrific narratives he dredged up from his faraway past. In his sweetly accented English, Megerdich would describe burning churches and sadistic horsemen. The sto-ries would always end the same way. My grandfather would instruct me, “If you ever meet a Turk, kill him.”I was no more than four years old when I first heard those words.My grandfather had spent his boyhood in the troubled eastern frontier of the Ottoman Empire more than a century ago. He had plenty of reason to hate the Turks, who had killed his father and almost killed him. In 1915, when he was barely twenty- one years old, Megerdich escaped the genocide that would exterminate hun-dreds of thousands of his fellow Armenians. More than once he told me the story of how his village burned while he and his mother crouched down in the middle of a wheat field, hiding from the zapiteh. Under darkness of night they fled, managed to find passage to France, and in 1916 Megerdich and my great- grandmother immigrated to the United States from Le Havre. My grandfather claimed that he had survived because he was smarter than the rest. That’s why I was such a smart little boy. But perhaps it was just luck.Megerdich’s own father was not so lucky. Ovygin Jamgochian, after successfully immigrating to the United States in the 1890s, had gained American citizenship. But he made the mistake of returning to “the old country” to find his wife and teenage son. The Young Turk government didn’t recognize his American citi-zenship, and he was swept up with hundreds of thousands of other able- bodied men and drafted into the army.“

“Even with the broad humor of Bret Harte, even with the broader humor of Artemus Ward and Mark Twain, there is generally present an undercurrent of melancholy, in which pathos and satire are intermingled. There was a touch of it even with the simple-going Cooper and the kindly Washington Irving. Melancholy and pathos, without the humor, are the springs on which all Longfellow's lines are set moving. But in no American writer is to be found the same predominance of weird imagination as in Hawthorne. There was something of it in M. G. Lewis--our Monk Lewis as he came to be called, from the name of a tale which he wrote; but with him, as with many others, we feel that they have been weird because they have desired to be so. They have struggled to achieve the tone with which their works are pervaded. With Hawthorne we are made to think that he could not have been anything else if he would. „Steve war völlig überrascht, dass sein Freund Tom so offen über dieses „verbotene“ Thema sprach. Seine Eltern hatten dieses Thema nie angesprochen und auch in der Schule wurde es eher vermieden und nur ganz schnell auf biologischer Ebene mit einem Xebensatz darauf eingegangen. Steve hatte bisher noch nicht darüber nachgedacht, er würde ohnehin joumalist und in der großen Stadt eine Frau finden. Auch wenn er es nicht wahrhaben wollte, die Eintnchterungen seiner Eltern trugen ihre Früchte. Deshalb lehnte er zunächst einmal ab. Es war unnatürlich und ein Schimpfwort in der Schule. Er war aber kein oberflächlicher Mensch, schon damals nicht. Deshalb beließ er es bei der Ablehnung und zog ’l'om damit nicht auch im nachhinein auf, wie es vermutlich 80% seiner Kollegen gemacht hatten. Tom und Steve hatten schon als kleine Kinder ein gutes Verhältnis und Steve wollte das nicht aufs Spiel setzen. Und es kam nicht von irgendwoher, dass ’l'om gerade ihn danach fragte. Für Tom war dieses Thema aber dadurch nicht beendet. Wenn er sich mal was in den Kopf gesetzt hatte, dium zog er das durch, auch wenn es jahre dauern würde. Tom war duldsam. Wenn er Steve immer wieder ab und an diesbezüglich ansprach oder kleine Seitenhiebe verteilte, würde auch Steve irgendwann mal weich werden. Denn wenn er das ausprobieren will, dann nur mit Steve, alle anderen kamen für ihn nicht in Betracht. Seine Strategie klappte bisher immer bei Steve Glowing. Und auch diesmal sollte Tom recht behalten und das schneller als erwartet.“
De Amerikaanse dichter George Oppen (eig. George Oppenheimer) werd geboren op 24 april 1908 in New Rochelle, New York. Oppen was een kind van een rijke Joodse familie en groeide op ten noorden van New York City. Zijn moeder stierf toen hij vier jaar oud was. Met zijn stiefmoeder had hij geen goede verstandhouding. Een huishoudelijke hulp bracht hem vaardigheden in het timmeren bij, zodat hij later in zijn leven als timmerman en schrijnwerker in zijn levensonderhoud kon voorzien. In 1917 verhuisde het gezin naar San Francisco, waar Oppen een high school bezocht die georiënteerd was op het leger. Na een ernstig auto-ongeluk dat hij als bestuurder overleefde, was hij getraumatiseerd. Dit betekende dat hij in 1925 van school moest zonder eindexamen. In 1925 begon hij zijn studie aan de Oregon State Agricultural College in Corvallis, nu Oregon State University. Daar ontmoette hij zijn toekomstige vrouw Mary Colby. Het jonge paar overtrad echter de huisregels, Maria werd weggestuurd en hij werd geschorst. In 1927 veranderde hij zijn achternaam van Oppenheimer in Oppen. Het paar trok liftend door de Verenigde Staten, trouwde en leefde van allerlei klussen. Oppen begon zijn eerste gedichten te schrijven die af en toe werden gedrukt in lokale kranten. In 1929 kreeg Oppen een kleine erfenis die een zelfstandig leven mogelijk maakte, eerst in 1930 in Californië en daarna in Frankrijk. In Frankrijk richtte hij en Louis Zukofsky het tijdschrift To Publishers op, waarin werk van Ezra Pound en William Carlos Williams werd gepubliceerd. Gedurende deze tijd publiceerde Oppen zijn eerste dichtbundel “Discrete Series”. De Oppens keerde in 1933 terug naar New York City en richtten met Williams, Zukofsky en Reznikoff de uitgeverij Objectivist Press op. Oppen werd een lid van de Communistische Partij en in 1936 hun campagnleider in Brooklyn. Bij het uitbreken van WO II werd hij vrijgesteld van militaire dienst, maar hij verliet zijn werkgever en meldde zich als vrijwilliger voor het front. Hij raakte gewond tijdens de oorlog en In 1945 werd hem het Purple Heart verleend. Oppen en zijn vrouw ging na de oorlog naar Mexico, omdat ze er zeker van waren dat ze vervolgd zouden worden omwille van hun communistische verleden. In Mexico begonnen de Oppens een klein bedrijf voor de productie van meubels, voortdurend gadegeslagen door de Mexicaanse politie en de FBI. Het paar kon niet naar huis terug te keren, omdat hun paspoorten ongeldig waren. Pas in 1958 waren ze in staat om een aanvraag voor nieuwe paspoorten in te dienen. In 1960 vestigde ze zich in Brooklyn en Oppen begon weer gedichten te schrijven en te publiceren.

“It had long been the custom in the district to point out the dry-stone dykes and walls of Hlidar in Steinahlidar as an example for aspiring young farmers to follow in life; there were no other works of art in those parts to compare with these carefully built walls of stone. The farms in Steinahlidar stand on a plain under cliffs which had been the seaboard twenty thousand years before. Pockets of soil keep forming in crevices up in the rock-face and various plants take root in them, which undermine the fabric of the rock. In the heavy rains of spring and autumn the soil is washed away from the fissures, and pieces of rock bounce down on to the farms below. On some farms these stones would cause great damage every year to the meadows and home-field, sometimes even to the buildings themselves. Steinar of Hlidar often had his hands full in the spring, clearing the boulders from his home-field and meadows--the more so since he was more meticulous than most. Many were the times he had to bend double and straighten up with a heavy boulder in his arms, for no other reward than the joy of seeing a destructive stone fitted with dedicated care into a wall. It is said that Steinar of Hlidar had a white pony which was considered the finest animal in the south. This horse was the sort of phenomenon that every farm needs. It seemed beyond serious doubt that this was a supernatural beast and had been so ever since he was a foal, when he had unexpectedly appeared on the scene at the side of a rather elderly white mare which had been running with the herd for a long time in the mountains. At the time of the birth she was grazing at LÃ?nsbakkar (Creek-Banks), but she had been stabled over midwinter and no one had had any idea that she was in foal. If there were ever a case of immaculate conception in Iceland, then this was it.”

“De bouten. Daarmee was het allemaal begonnen. Elke dag, als hij op het werk kwam, naar buiten liep om te lunchen of weer naar huis ging, bleef Doni even staan om ze te bekijken. Van een afstand leken het gewoon slijtplekken, of vlekjes die altijd al in de tegels hadden gezeten, maar het waren bouten, grote metalen bouten, die het marmer op zijn plaats moesten houden. Het oorspronkelijk aangebrachte cement was namelijk aan het loslaten, waardoor het hele gebouw gevaar liep. Die dingen hadden natuurlijk iets van een morele boodschap. Het huis van het Recht dat zich moet voegen naar de hogere wetten van de materie. Maar Doni zag er niets anders in dan de idiotie van de mensen, en misschien een vage waarschuwing: nooit bouwen op zand. Op de dag dat zij hem schreef, bedacht Doni dat het Paleis van Justitie dat lot had moeten ondergaan omdat het de omringende ruimte van zich af stootte. Het was ermee in gevecht, het was niet in staat er deel van uit te maken, zoals het dat trouwens ook niet zou kunnen in een willekeurige andere wijk van de stad. En het kon niet alleen maar een kwestie zijn van bouten en scheuren en lelijkheid. Net zo min als de architectuur uit de tijd van het fascisme of de overwinning van de breedte op de hoogte voldoende waren om het Paleis te vonnissen. Nee, het Paleis had één bepaalde, unieke eigenschap. Het was iets wat te maken had met ballingschap, een moeilijk te vatten gevoel. Als hij daar binnen was, voelde Doni zich verbannen uit de rest van de stad, uit het land, uit de wereld. De kracht van honderden bouten moest hem overeind houden, zand gebouwd op zand. Op de dag dat zij hem schreef, bestond Doni’s lunch niet uit de gebruikelijke mueslireep, maar at hij samen met Salvatori, een officier van justitie, in een restaurant. Dat was niet de gewoonte. Als magistraten hadden ze altijd haast, hoogstens kwamen ze wel eens in een of andere vreselijke selfservice in de buurt.”

Wandelaar! en als hij haastig komt, wijzen ze overboord en zeggen: een zeemeermin, je ben nèt te laat. Hij wil den stuurman er niet in kennen, want dat zou mis zijn; hij slaat er een op zijn bakkes en dat is helemaal mis, want nu is het vooronder met één slag vol armen en benen, die stompen en trappen en hij wordt met een vork in zijn billen gestoken, dat hij 's nachts aan het roer staat te krimpen. Hij heeft de spaken van het stuurwiel beet of het de strotten van dat rapalje zijn en de kompasroos wordt een nevelig maantje door de tranen. “Among some treasures I lost during the wanderings of my adult years, there was a snapshot taken by my aunt which showed Annabel, her parents and the staid, elderly, lame gentleman, a Dr. Cooper, who that same summer courted my aunt, grouped around a table in a sidewalk café. Annabel did not come out well, caught as she was in the act of bending over her chocolat glac?, and her thin bare shoulders and the parting in her hair were about all that could be identified (as I remember that picture) amid the sunny blur into which her lost loveliness graded; but I, sitting somewhat apart from the rest, came out with a kind of dramatic conspicuousness: a moody, beetle-browed boy in a dark sport shirt and well-tailored white shorts, his legs crossed, sitting in profile, looking away. That photograph was taken on the last day of our fatal summer and just a few minutes before we made our second and final attempt to thwart fate. „So unberechenbar sich mein Vater als nervös überspannter Wüterich aufführen kann, so überraschend zugewandt, liebevoll und lebendig humorvoll kann er sein. Als einen der schönsten Augenblicke erinnere ich es, einmal auf seinen Schultern zu sitzen, während er von der Küche ins Esszimmer und wieder zurück geht und ich dabei aus dieser riesigen Höhe den abgründig tiefen Boden betrachten kann. Auch zu einem Kinderkonzert der San Francisco Symphony nimmt er mich manchmal mit, und ich darf von meinem Fauteuilsitz aus stolz seinem Bratschenspiel an einem der Pulte zuschauen, bis er mich wieder abholt. Eines Nachmittags darf ich mich in einem Fotostudio ablichten lassen (ein Foto, das noch bis vor Kurzem lose in meiner Fotosammlung herumlag) und mir anschließend ein wenig Marzipan aussuchen. Unvergesslich geblieben ist mir auch eine Nachtwanderung mit meinem Vater und Toni bei Vollmond durch den unheimlich dunklen Wald am Fuß des Mount Tamalpais über Mill Valley. Auf dem Heimweg verirren wir uns hoffnungslos. Mein Vater versteht uns jedoch zu beruhigen. Mit dem kleinen Toni auf seinen Schultern leitet er uns wohlbehalten zurück nach Hause. Gelegentlich nimmt er uns zum Krebsefangen am Waldbach neben der alten Mühle mit, die unserem Wohnort seinen Namen gegeben hat. Ein recht gruseliger Anblick ist es dann nur, wenn der Vater zu Hause vor unseren Augen die Tiere lebend in das kochende Wasser im Topf auf dem Herd wirft und dann begeistert den raschen Wechsel ihrer dunkelbraunen Farbe ins Rote kommentiert. Als er beim Krebsefangen einmal in den Bach stürzt, gibt er sein Missgeschick geistesgegenwärtig als eine Clown-Einlage für uns Kinder aus.“

De Nederlandse schrijver Charles den Texwerd geboren in Box Hill, Australië, op 21 april 1952. Den Tex kwam op vijfjarige leeftijd met zijn ouders terug naar Nederland. Hij studeerde fotografie en film in Londen, werkte in Parijs en vestigde zich in 1979 als reclametekstschrijver en later als communicatie- en managementadviseur in Nederland. Hij schreef dertien thrillers waarvan er zes werden genomineerd voor de Gouden Strop. In 2002 won hij de prijs met “Schijn van kans”, in 2006 met “De macht van meneer Miller” en in 2008 met “Cel”. Hij heeft een eigen subgenre ontwikkeld, de corporate thriller dicht op de huid van de tijd. Zijn boeken worden in de pers vergeleken met die van John Grisham, Michael Crichton en Michael Ridpath. Zijn boek”De macht van meneer Miller” werd in 2010 voor de VPRO bewerkt tot de vierdelige televisieserie Bellicher; de Macht van meneer Miller. Later is zijn boek “Cel” ook tot een televisieserie bewerkt Bellicher; Cel. Met De Vriend won hij de Crimezone Thriller Award 2012. In 2013 is Charles den Tex door het Letterenfonds voorgedragen voor de Ripper Award, de eerste Europese thrillerprijs. Van 1999 tot 2004 was Den Tex voorzitter van het in 1986 opgerichte Genootschap van Nederlandstalige Misdaadauteurs.
