Georg Trakl werd op 3 februari 1887 in het conducteurshuis aan de Waagplatz 2 in Salzburg geboren. Zijn vader, Tobias Trakl, was een handelaar in ijzerwaren en zijn moeder, die ook psychische problemen had, was Maria Catharina Trakl, (meisjesnaam Halik). Voorts had hij nog drie broers en drie zussen. Margarethe (doorgaans Grethe genoemd) stond hem het naast, zelfs zodanig dat sommigen een incestueuze verhouding vermoeden. Zijn jeugd bracht hij door in Salzburg. Vervolgens bezocht hij van 1897 tot 1905 het humanistische gymnasium. Om toch een academische opleiding te kunnen volgen, werkte hij tot 1908 in de praktijk bij een apotheker. Sommigen vermoedden dat hij dit vooral deed om zichzelf opiaten te kunnen verschaffen. Bij het uitbreken van WO I werd Trakl als medicus naar het front in Galicië (heden ten dage in Oekraïne en Polen) gestuurd. Zijn gemoedsschommelingen leidden tot geregelde uitbraken van depressie, die verergerd werden door de afschuw die hij voelde voor de verzorging van de ernstig verwonde soldaten. De spanning en druk dreven hem ertoe een suïcidepoging te ondernemen, welke zijn kameraden nochtans verhinderden. Hij werd in een militair ziekenhuis opgenomen in Kraków, alwaar hij onder strikt toezicht geplaatst werd.Trakl verzonk daar in nog zwaardere depressies en schreef Ficker om advies. Ficker overtuigde hem ervan dat hij contact moest opnemen met Wittgenstein, die inderdaad op weg ging na Trakls bericht te hebben ontvangen. Op 4 november 1914, drie dagen voordat Wittgenstein aan zou komen, overleed hij echter aan een overdosis cocaïne
Paul Celan
Paul Celan werd onder de naam Paul Antschel op 23 november 1920 geboren in Czernowitz, toentertijd de hoofdstad van de Roemeense Boekovina, nu behorend bij de Oekraïne. Paul Celans ouders waren Duitssprekende joden die hun zoon joods opvoedden en hem naar Duitse christelijke scholen stuurden. In 1942 werden Celans ouders door de Duitse bezetter naar een werkkamp gedeporteerd en daar vermoord. Hijzelf wist aanvankelijk onder te duiken, maar moest vanaf juli 1942 in een werkkamp dwangarbeid verrichten. Celan overleefde de oorlog. Via Boekarest en Wenen vestigde Celan zich in 1948 in Parijs. Daar was hij werkzaam als dichter, vertaler en doceerde hij aan de prestigieuze Ecole Normale Supérieure. Vermoedelijk op 20 april 1970 beëindigde hij zijn leven zelf door in de Seine te springen.

Simon Vestdijk
Simon Vestdijk (Harlingen, 17 oktober 1898 – Utrecht, 23 maart 1971) was een Nederlands romancier, dichter, essayist en vertaler. Zijn jeugd te Harlingen en Leeuwarden beschreef hij later in de Anton Wachter-cyclus. Van jongs af aan logeerde hij regelmatig bij zijn grootouders in Amsterdam, waar hij zich in 1917 aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam inschrijft als student in de medicijnen. Tijdens zijn studie die van 1917 tot 1927 duurde, leerde hij Jan Slauerhoff kennen.Tot 1932 is hij als arts in praktijken door heel Nederland werkzaam. In 1932 volgt zijn officiële schrijversdebuut met de uitgave van de bundel Verzen in De Vrije Bladen. Doorslaggevend voor Vestdijks uiteindelijke keuze voor de literatuur is zijn ontmoeting in 1932 met Eddy Du Perron en Menno ter Braak. Deze ontmoeting had tot resultaat dat hij redactielid werd van het tijdschrift Forum Kort daarop, in 1933, wordt zijn eerste novelle, De oubliette, uitgegeven. In hetzelfde jaar schrijft hij Kind tussen vier vrouwen, dat, eerst geweigerd door de uitgever, later de basis zal vormen voor de eerste drie delen van de Anton Wachter-romans. In 1951 ontvangt Vestdijk de P.C. Hooftprijs voor zijn in 1947 verschenen roman De vuuraanbidders. In 1957 wordt hij voor het eerst door het PEN-centrum voor Nederland voorgedragen voor de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur, die hij echter nooit zal krijgen. Op 20 maart 1971 wordt hem de Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren toegekend, maar voor hij deze kan ontvangen overlijdt hij op 23 maart te Utrecht op 72-jarige leeftijd. Vestdijk was auteur van ca. 200 boeken. Vanwege deze enorme productie noemde de dichter Adriaan Roland Holst hem 'de man die sneller schrijft dan God kan lezen'. Andere belangrijke boeken van Simon Vestdijk zijn: "Kind van stad en land" (1936), "Meneer Visser's hellevaart" (1936), "Ierse nachten" (1946), "De toekomst de religie" (1947), "Pastorale 1943" (1948), "De koperen tuin" (1950), "Ivoren wachters" (1951), "Essays in duodecimo" (1952) en "Het genadeschot" (1964).
K.P. Kavafis K.P. Kavafis werd als kind van Griekse ouders, afkomstig uit Konstantinopel, geboren in 1863 in Alexandrië (tot vandaag een Griekse enclave) waar hij ook het grootste deel van zijn leven woonde en werkte. Twee jaar na de dood van zijn vader verhuist het gezin in 1872 naar Engeland om na een verblijf van vijf jaar naar Alexandrië terug te keren. Vanwege ongeregeldheden in Egypte vlucht het gezin in 1882 naar Konstantinopel, om na drie jaar opnieuw naar Alexandrië terug te gaan. In de jaren die volgen maakt Kavafis reizen naar Parijs, Londen en in 1901 zijn eerste reis naar Griekenland, in latere jaren gevolgd door nog enkele bezoeken. Op de dag van zijn zeventigste verjaardag, in 1933 sterft Kavafis in Alexandrië. De roem kwam voor Kavafis pas na zijn dood, dus postuum. Deels is dat toe te schrijven aan zijn eigen handelswijze. Hij was uiterst terughoudend met de publicatie van zijn gedichten, liet af en toe een enkel gedicht afdrukken in een literair tijdschrift, gaf in eigen beheer enkele bundels met een stuk of twintig gedichten uit en het merendeel van zijn poëzie schonk hij op losse bladen aan zijn beste vrienden.
Thomas Mann
Thomas Mann, de jongere broer van Heinrich Mann, werd geboren op 6 juni 1875 in Lübeck. Hij was de tweede zoon van de graankoopman Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann welke later één van de senatoren van Lübreck werd. Zijn moeder Julia (geboren da Silva-Bruhns) was Duits-Braziliaans van Portugees Kreoolse afkomst. In 1894 debuteerde Thomas Mann met de novelle "Gefallen". Toen Thomas Mann met 21 jaar eindelijk volwassen was en hem dus geld van zijn vaders erfenis toestond - hij kreeg ongeveer 160 tot 180 goldmark per jaar - besloot hij dat hij genoeg had van al die scholen en instituties en werd onafhankelijk schrijver. Kenmerkend voor zijn stijl zijn de ironie, de fenomenale taalbeheersing en de minutieuze detailschildering. Manns reputatie in Duitsland was sterk wisselend. Met zijn eerste roman, Buddenbrooks (1901), had hij een enorm succes, maar door zijn sceptische houding tegenover Duitsland na de Eerste Wereldoorlog veranderde dit volledig. Stelde hij zich tot aan de jaren twintig apolitiek op (Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen, 1918), meer en meer raakte hij bij het Politiek gebeuren betrokken. Zijn afkeer van het nationaal socialisme groeide, zijn waarschuwingen werden veelvuldiger en heftiger. In 1944 accepteerde hij het Amerikaanse staatsburgerschap. Tussen 1943 en 1947 schreef Mann Doktor Faustus (zie Faust), de roman van de 'Duitse ziel' in de gecamoufleerd geschilderde omstandigheden van de 20ste eeuw. In 1947 bezocht hij voor het eerst sinds de Oorlog Europa, twee jaar later pas Duitsland. In 1952 vertrok hij naar Zwitserland. Op 12 augustus 1955 stierf hij in Zürich. Twintig jaar na zijn dood, in aug. 1975, is zijn literaire nalatenschap geopend: dagboekaantekeningen van 15 maart 1933 tot 29 juli 1955, alsmede notities uit de jaren 1918 tot en met 1921.Belangrijke werken zijn: Der Zauberberg, Der Tod in Venedig, Dokter Faustus , Joseph und seine Brüder en Die Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull.
Rainer Maria Rilke
Rilke werd op 4 december 1875 geboren in Praag. Hij had al naam gemaakt als dichter met zijn bundels Das Stundenbuch en Das Buch der Bilder, toen hij de literaire wereld versteld deed staan en wereldfaam verwierf met de publicatie van zijn twee delen Neue Gedichte in 1907 en 1908. Hij verzamelde daarin het beste werk uit een van zijn vruchtbaarste periodes, die hij grotendeels doorbracht in Parijs. Rilke was daar diep onder de indruk gekomen van Rodin, bij wie hij een tijdlang in dienst was als particulier secretaris. Rodin, zei hij later, had hem leren kijken. Dit kijken kwam neer op intense concentratie, om het mysterie te kunnen zien ‘achter de schijnbare werkelijkheid'. Latere en rijpere werken als Duineser Elegien (1912-1923) en het ronduit schitterende Die Sonette an Orfeus (1924) illustreren Rilkes metafysische visie op het onzegbare, dat haar verwoording vindt in een hermetische muzikale taal. Op 29 december 1926 overlijdt Rilke in het sanatorium in Val-Mont aan de gevolgen van leukemie. Enkele dagen later wordt hij, overeenkomstig zijn wens, begraven op het kerkhof van Raron.

Delphine de Vigan
De Franse schrijfster en filmmaakster Delphine de Viganwerd geboren op 1 maart 1966 in Boulogne-Billancourt. Na haar studie letterkunde en toepaste wetenschappen werd ze directrice studies aan een instituut voor enquêtes. Onder het pseudoniem Lou Delvig, schreef ze haar eerste autobiografisch geïnspireerde “Jours sans faim” (2001), waarin de strijd van een jonge vrouw tegen anorexia vertelt wordt. Een verhalenbundel en een tweede roman volgden in 2005, gepubliceerd onder haar echte naam. In augustus 2007 publiceerde de Vigan “No et moi” waarvoor zij de Prix des Libraires en de Prix du Rotary kreeg en die bewerkt werd voor de film door Zabou Breitman. In “Les heures souterraines”, genomineerd voor de Goncourt, hekelt zij de intimidatie op de werkplek. In 2011 verscheen “Rien ne s’oppose à la nuit“, waarin zij vertelt over haar moeders lijden aan een bipolaire stoornis. Daarmee won zij de Prix du Roman Fnac, de Prix des lectrices de Elle, de Prix Roman France Télévisions en de Prix Renaudot des lycéens. In hetzelfde jaar schreef zij samen met Gilles Legrand het scenario voor “Tu seras mon fils”. In 2013 regisseerde Delphine de Vigan haar eerste film “A coup sûr”,waarvoor zij samen met Chris Esquerre het scenario schreef. In 2015 won ze de Prix Renaudot en de Prix Goncourt des lycéens voor haar roman « D'après une histoire vraie".

"Quelqucs mois après la parution de mon dernier roman, j’ai cessé d’écrire. Pendant presque trois années, je n'ai pas écrit une ligne. Les expressions figées doivent parfois s’entendre au pied de la lettre : je n’ai pas écrit une lettre administrative, pas un carton de remerciement, pas une carte postale de vacances, pas une liste de courses. Rien qui demande un quelconque effort de rédaction, qui obéisse à quelque préoccupation de forme. Pas une ligne, pas un mot. La vue d’un bloc, d'un carnet, d’une fiche bristol me donnait mal au cœur. Peu à peu, le geste lui-même est devenu occasionnel, hésitant, ne s’exécutait plus sans appréhension. Le simple fait de tenir un stylo m’est apparu de plus en plus difficile. Plus tard, j’ai été prise de panique dès que j’ouvmis un document Word. Je cherchais la bonne position, l'orientation optimale de l’écran, i'e‘tirais mes jambes sous la table. Et puis je restais là, immobile, des heures durant, les yeux rivés sur l'écran. Plus tard encore, mes mains se sont mises à trembler dès que je les approchais du clavier. J'ai refusé sans distinction toutes les propositions qui m’ont été adressées : articles, nouvelles de l’été, préfaces et autres participations à des ouvrages collectifs. Le simple mot écrire dans une lettre ou un message suffisait à me nouer l‘estomac. Écrire, je ne pouvais plus. Écrire, c'était non. Je sais aujourd’hui que différentes rumeurs ont circulé dans mon entourage, dans le milieu littéraire et sur les réseaux sociaux. Je sais qu‘il a été dit que je n’écrirais plus, que j’étais parvenue au bout de quelque chose, que les feux de paille, ou de papier, toujours, finissent par s’éteindre. L‘homme que j’aime s’est imaginé qu'à son contact j’avais perdu l'élan, ou bien la faille nourricière. et que par conséquent je ne tarderais pas à le quitter. Lorsque des amis, des relations, et parfois même des journalisres se sont aventurés à me poser des questions sur ce silence, j’ai évoqué différents motifs ou cmpêchements parmi lesquels figuraient la fatigue, les déplacements à l’étranger, la pression liée au succès, ou même la fin d’un cycle littéraire."

Und am Abend, an dem dann endlich, endlich das Christkind kam, sas sie stumm vor Ergriffenheit unter dem Christbaum und muste von ihren Eltern dazu aufgefordert werden, die Geschenke zu öffnen. Aber nach der Scheidung war Weihnachten nur noch dazu da, sie daran zu erinnern, das ihre Eltern nicht mehr zusammenwaren. Sie muste jetzt zweimal feiern, einmal mit Myrtha und ihrem jeweiligen Freund, einmal mit ihrem Vater und seiner furchtbaren neuen Frau. Mit zwolf gab sie bekannt, das sie nicht mehr Weihnachten feiern wolle. Bei ihrem Vater sties sie dabei auf keinerlei Widerstand. Bei Myrtha war es komplizierter. Wenn sie von ihrer Weihnachtsdepression heimgesucht wurde, was, je alter sie wurde, desto o∫er eintraf, brachte Marie es nicht ubers Herz, Weihnachten zu ignorieren. Aber jetzt, wo Myrtha in Crans Montana war und Marie unbeschwerte Weihnachten mit ein paar Videos und Fertigpizzas verbringen konnte, hatte sie plotzlich das Bedürfnis nach Gesellschaft.. Deshalb verbrachte sie die letzten Abende des Weihnachts-Countdowns zu ihrer eigenen Verwunderung mit ihrer neuen Ersatzfamilie im Esquina. Und selbst in den Nachten blieb sie nicht immer allein. Zwei davon verbrachte sie mit Ralph, auf den sie sich doch eigentlich gar nicht hatte einlassen wollen. Fur jeden Abend nahm sie sich vor, nur kurz auf ein Glas hereinzuschauen und vor zwolf zu Hause zu sein. Aber jedesmal blieb sie hangen. Nicht, weil das Gesprach gerade so interessant war oder die Gesellscha∫ so angenehm oder die Nacht so schon. Es war die Vorstellung, allein in der Wohnung ihrer Mutter vor dem Fernseher zu sitzen, die sie im Esquina hielt.“

“Ik herinner me de eerste keer dat ik alleen met de trein naar Amsterdam ging. Ik was zestien en arriveerde in het Centraal Station waar ik werd overvallen door de bekende zenuwachtigheid die iedere treinreiziger overvalt als hij in een vreemd station aankomt. Ik volgde de massa naar buiten helemaal tot aan de Dam, waar ze uiteenviel en ik noodgedwongen een keuze diende te maken om mijn doel te bereiken: de vlooienmarkt, waar men voor een appel en een ei een lederen jack en een geel, groen of rood hemd met jarenzeventigkraag kon kopen. Ik hield een fietser tegen en vroeg waar de rommelmarkt was. Hij zei iets in de zin van: ‘Here you take a left, cross the bridges, continue, continue, straight ahead till you can’t go further, than you go right and you will see the market.’ Het Engels was met zo’n zwaar accent uitgesproken dat ik er nauwelijks iets van begreep; ik had trouwens ook geen Engels verwacht: ik was toch in Nederland? Gelukkig kon ik de spartelende hand volgen die zijn uitleg begeleidde en als een haring door de grachten kronkelde tot aan het Waterlooplein. En ook al keerde ik met een kanariegeel hemd terug naar Gent, ik kon uit het voorval alleen maar afleiden dat de Nederlanders anders zijn; afgaande op mijn bloed, ik dus ook een beetje. Twintig jaar en drie romans later in café De Zwart, waar anders, had ik een discussie met een oudere man over literatuur en Nederland. Hij zei: ‘Maar een hele generatie is grootgebracht met Reve.’ ‘Het is er aan te zien,’ zei ik en de man werd kwaad. ‘Jullie hebben nog geeneens noemenswaardige allochtone schrijvers,’ wierp hij in het midden. Ik zei dat ik Paravion wel een mooi boek vond, maar ongenuanceerd, omdat het suggereert dat de Marokkaanse cultuur meer in Europa zit vastgeroest dan in Marokko, een halve waarheid. ‘De Belgen zijn beter,’ zei ik gekscherend, ‘het staat bij jullie in de krant, maar de Nederlanders winnen alle prijzen.’ Afgaande op mijn bloed acht ik het dus mogelijk ooit genomineerd te worden; winnen is een andere zaak.”

L’attrait du cinéma, de la télévision, voire de la bande dessinée ou de la vidéo, est-il suffisam ment fort pour vous faire passer sur tous les obstacles liés, non pas seulement à l’écriture, à la création, mais au simple Fait que vous n’êtes pas seul maître à bord, seul auteur de l’œuvre finale, seule subjectivité prise en compte ? Que vous n’êtes qu’un rouage d’une machine complexe? Il faut aimer les interventions extérieures, les remises en cause. les dérives du projet initial, pour vouloir être scénariste. Sans quoi, mieux vaudrait sans doute écrire un roman dans ce cas vous n'aurez qu‘un interlocuteur direct, l‘éditeur. Il prendra ou ne prendra pas votre manuscrit. Mais il ne se mêlera pas de vous le faire repenser et réécrire vingt fois. Et vos personnages ne vous demanderont pas de modifier leurs répliques. La question de savoir si on veut écrire un scénario et non un roman n‘est pas du tout théorique ou oiseuse. Combien de candidats scénaristes sont des romanciers en herbe fourvoyés. Il faut donc que dès le début, vous soyez conscients de la portée de votre écriture et de ses implications.”

Eine Schachtel hat die Aufschrift ADHESIVE WOUND DRESSING. Die Frau hat ein weiches Gesicht und ist bemüht, ihm einen gnadenlosen Zug zu geben. Drei Finger ihrer rechten Hand sind mit Pflastern beklebt. Das Lokal ringsherum ist längst verschwunden, in ein Nichts entwichen. Ich will sie berühren, sie zuckt weg. Sie stößt mir ihr Knie in den Oberschenkel. Immer wird sie dir einen Schlag voraus sein, denke ich. Sie sagt, sie heiße Sally. Pause. Sie könne nicht weinen. Pause. ““Scarcely were the refugees settled behind the security of the “permanent Indian frontier” when soldiers began marching westward through the Indian country. The white men of the United States—who talked so much of peace but rarely seemed to practice it—were marching to war with the white men who had conquered the Indians of Mexico. When the war with Mexico ended in 1847, the United States took possession of a vast expanse of territory reaching from Texas to California. All of it was west of the “permanent Indian frontier.” In 1848 gold was discovered in California. Within a few months, fortune-seeking easterners by the thousands were crossing the Indian Territory. Indians who lived or hunted along the Santa Fe and Oregon trails had grown accustomed to seeing an occasional wagon train licensed for traders, trappers, or missionaries. Now suddenly the trails were filled with wagons, and the wagons were filled with white people. Most of them were bound for California gold, but some turned southwest for New Mexico or northwest for the Oregon country. To justify these breaches of the “permanent Indian frontier,” the policy makers in Washington invented Manifest Destiny, a term which lifted land hunger to a lofty plane. The Europeans and their descendants were ordained by destiny to rule all of America. They were the dominant race and therefore responsible for the Indians—along with their lands, their forests, and their mineral wealth. Only the New Englanders, who had destroyed or driven out all their Indians, spoke against Manifest Destiny. In 1850, although none of the Modocs, Mohaves, Paiutes, Shastas, Yumas, or a hundred other lesser-known tribes along the Pacific Coast were consulted on the matter, California became the thirty-first state of the Union. In the mountains of Colorado gold was discovered, and new hordes of prospectors swarmed across the Plains.”

Not even Bolívar escapes this charge, since in Colombia he stirred up blacks against the whites in order to recruit his armies. For the people of the North, such procedures would have seemed insane, as they were. It was therefore a crime: stirring up the underdogs against the top brass without any social improvement, merely to have soldiers. In fact, the idea of putting the Indian in front of the insurrection was an English idea. One of the first people to speak of confederating the Hispanic continent under the rule of a descendant of the Incas was Miranda. This idea was given to Miranda by the two biggest enemies of the Spanish in America, namely the French and the English.”

“They didn’t have ‘em as crazy as Vinc in Studs’ class; but there was TB McCarthy, who was always getting his ears beat off, and being made to kneel up in front of the room, or to go in Sister Bernadette’s room and sit with all the girls and let them laugh at him. And there was Reardon with horses’ hoofs for feet. One day in geography in the fifth grade, Cyrilla called on Reardon and asked him what the British Isles consisted of. Reardon didn’t know so Studs whispered to him to say iron, and Reardon said iron. Sister Cyrilla thought it was so funny she .marked him right for the day’s lesson. He had just not meant to hit Weary with it, and in saying so he had only told the truth. St. Patrick’s meant a lot of things. St. Patrick’s meant…..Lucy. Lucy Scanlan would stand on the same stage with him in a few hours, and. she would receive her diploma. She would wear a white dress, just like his sister Frances, and Weary’s sister Fran, and she would receive her diploma. Everybody said that Fran Lonigan and Fran Reilley were the two prettiest girls in the class ell, if you asked him, the prettiest girl in the class was black-bobbed-haired Lucy. He got soft, and felt like he was all mud and mush inside; held his hand over his heart, and told himself: My Lucy! He flicked some ashes in the sink, and said to himself: Lucy, I love you!“

„Die guten Tage, von denen es auch in jenen Jahren reichlich gab, wurden überschattet von der Sorge um meine von Deportation bedrohte Mutter und um meinen Vater, der ins Lager kam, weil er sich nicht von seiner jüdischen Frau scheiden ließ. Und gegen Ende dieser Zeit musste ich Zwangsarbeit unter SS-Aufsicht im Reparaturbetrieb von Salamander leisten. Diese erste Phase meines Lebens schloss mit dem Ende der Verfolgung und des Krieges. Die zweite Phase begann nach einem kurzen Übergang mit der Aufnahme in die Vorstudienanstalt und den bald folgenden Studien und Forschungen. Am ersten Tag in der Vorstudienanstalt begegnete ich dem Mann, mit dem ich die zweite, die wichtigste Lebensetappe durchschritt. In dieser Zeit brach die Gesellschaft zusammen, die ich mitzugestalten versucht hatte, die sich aber weit von meinen Vorstellungen einer gerechten Gesellschaft entfernt hatte. Und so ist die dritte Phase, meine Jetzt-Zeit, vom konkurrenzlosen Kapitalismus bestimmt und ich habe versucht, meinen Platz darin zu finden, ohne meine Ideale zu verleugnen. Von allen Phasen meines Lebens berichte ich etwas, von der Bitternis mehr als von der Süße, obwohl sie sich im Gleichgewicht hielten. Jedoch das Bitterkraut macht mir mehr zu schaffen als der Honig. Wir sind keine eifernden Kevolutioniire der Schulstuhe‚ wir erdreistcn uns nicht einmal„ Sie zu verführen, guten alten Wein in neue Schläuche umzugiessen; nein‚ wir wollen Ihnen kein neues Fach, geschweige eine neue « Schule» aufsßhwatzen; was wir behutsam versuchen‚ ist dies : wir möchten Sie überrcdcn‚ mit uns eine Unterlassungssünde unseres und des vorgegangenen Gesehlechtes gutzumachen. Diese kleine Sünde besteht darin, dass man den Spieltrieh des Kindes, wenn nicht eben unterdrückt so doch missvcrstanden und vernachlässigt hat oder im besten Falle nur beschränkt gelten und sich auslehen liess. Traugott Vogel(27 februari 1894 – 31 januari 1975)
De Welshe schrijver Cynan Joneswerd geboren op 27 februari 1975 in de buurt van Aberystwyth, Wales. Jones publiceerde zijn eerste roman “The Long Dry” in 2006. Tussen 2011 en 2014 publiceerde hij nog drie romans: “Everything I Found on the Beach”(2011), “Bird, Blood, Snow”(2012), en “The Dig”. In 2016 volgde nog “Cove”.Zijn werk is vertaald in diverse talen en zijn korte verhalen zijn verschenen in een aantal bloemlezingen en publicaties, zoals Granta en New Welsh Review. “The Long Dry” werd bekroond met een 2007 Betty Trask Award. “The Dig”, zijn meest recente roman, won in 2014 de Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize en de 2015 Wales Book of the Year Fiction Prize. Die roman stond ook op de longlist voor de 2014 Kirkus Prize in de VS. In 2014, Jones haalde de krantenkoppen voor het ontbreken van interpunctie in het grootste deel van de toespraak in zijn roman The Dig (en een paar andere korte verhalen). Het spreken en de ideeën van zijn personages werd gemarkeerd door middel van aanhalingstekens totdat John Freeman, redacteur bij het tijdschrift Granta, de aanhalingstekens verwijderde om een grotere directheid te bereiken. De auteur was het met hem eens over het effect van deze onconventionele werkwijze en schreef de rest van het boek op deze manier, met uitzondering van een gesprek tussen de hoofdpersoon en zijn moeder. In die passage gebruikte Jones de traditionele aanhalingstekens "to create a sense of a more conventional, staid dialogue."

“The black lamb looked tired and beaten under the lamp. It had not put on weight and he could make out the fingers of its ribs with the bloated milk-full stomach behind them. It was folded in the bottom of the box, but not with the folded comfortable way of a sleeping cat, more with the weak compliance of something sick beyond will. Daniel picked up the small black lamb. His father would have simply dashed its head on the barn floor. He was not a hard man, but a pragmatist; but that kind of will wasn’t in Daniel. Despite the lamp the lamb felt cold, as if it could generate no heat of its own, and it was too light for itself and hung limply. It was as if he’d picked a jumper from the floor. It had a completely will-less passivity. I don’t expect this of you, he said. I just want you to understand it. Sometimes you have to choose between a quick misery or a slow misery. He heard his father talking, saw him take the useless lamb from the box. You have to understand it as an option. There was a movement and the lamb hung dead from his father’s hand, a thin spittle of blood reaming from its mouth. He heard the voice again. Heard his father, that there were the two miseries, and somewhere in him a vicious voice told him that his wife had no fear now of the worse, drawn-out misery that might have come. Hers had been the quick misery, the head dashed against the barn floor. He thought of his father stricken, becalmed by the stroke. He ignored the vicious little voice, as if it was something overheard he had no wish to know. He rubbed the lamb, trying to bring some warmth into its muscles, the wrinkles of the loose skin riding under his hand like rolls of sock. There was the superstition that every flock should have a black lamb to sacrifice should the Devil come and it was to Daniel like the lamb was a victim of this. He felt the lamb’s heartbeat under his hands. It was faint. A bare registry. You need to live, he thought. He picked up the lamb and carried it into the house. He put it down in the porch and took off his boots and then went in and found a box and came back for the lamb.“
