Georg Trakl werd op 3 februari 1887 in het conducteurshuis aan de Waagplatz 2 in Salzburg geboren. Zijn vader, Tobias Trakl, was een handelaar in ijzerwaren en zijn moeder, die ook psychische problemen had, was Maria Catharina Trakl, (meisjesnaam Halik). Voorts had hij nog drie broers en drie zussen. Margarethe (doorgaans Grethe genoemd) stond hem het naast, zelfs zodanig dat sommigen een incestueuze verhouding vermoeden. Zijn jeugd bracht hij door in Salzburg. Vervolgens bezocht hij van 1897 tot 1905 het humanistische gymnasium. Om toch een academische opleiding te kunnen volgen, werkte hij tot 1908 in de praktijk bij een apotheker. Sommigen vermoedden dat hij dit vooral deed om zichzelf opiaten te kunnen verschaffen. Bij het uitbreken van WO I werd Trakl als medicus naar het front in Galicië (heden ten dage in Oekraïne en Polen) gestuurd. Zijn gemoedsschommelingen leidden tot geregelde uitbraken van depressie, die verergerd werden door de afschuw die hij voelde voor de verzorging van de ernstig verwonde soldaten. De spanning en druk dreven hem ertoe een suïcidepoging te ondernemen, welke zijn kameraden nochtans verhinderden. Hij werd in een militair ziekenhuis opgenomen in Kraków, alwaar hij onder strikt toezicht geplaatst werd.Trakl verzonk daar in nog zwaardere depressies en schreef Ficker om advies. Ficker overtuigde hem ervan dat hij contact moest opnemen met Wittgenstein, die inderdaad op weg ging na Trakls bericht te hebben ontvangen. Op 4 november 1914, drie dagen voordat Wittgenstein aan zou komen, overleed hij echter aan een overdosis cocaïne
Paul Celan
Paul Celan werd onder de naam Paul Antschel op 23 november 1920 geboren in Czernowitz, toentertijd de hoofdstad van de Roemeense Boekovina, nu behorend bij de Oekraïne. Paul Celans ouders waren Duitssprekende joden die hun zoon joods opvoedden en hem naar Duitse christelijke scholen stuurden. In 1942 werden Celans ouders door de Duitse bezetter naar een werkkamp gedeporteerd en daar vermoord. Hijzelf wist aanvankelijk onder te duiken, maar moest vanaf juli 1942 in een werkkamp dwangarbeid verrichten. Celan overleefde de oorlog. Via Boekarest en Wenen vestigde Celan zich in 1948 in Parijs. Daar was hij werkzaam als dichter, vertaler en doceerde hij aan de prestigieuze Ecole Normale Supérieure. Vermoedelijk op 20 april 1970 beëindigde hij zijn leven zelf door in de Seine te springen.
Gerard Reve

Simon Vestdijk
Simon Vestdijk (Harlingen, 17 oktober 1898 – Utrecht, 23 maart 1971) was een Nederlands romancier, dichter, essayist en vertaler. Zijn jeugd te Harlingen en Leeuwarden beschreef hij later in de Anton Wachter-cyclus. Van jongs af aan logeerde hij regelmatig bij zijn grootouders in Amsterdam, waar hij zich in 1917 aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam inschrijft als student in de medicijnen. Tijdens zijn studie die van 1917 tot 1927 duurde, leerde hij Jan Slauerhoff kennen.Tot 1932 is hij als arts in praktijken door heel Nederland werkzaam. In 1932 volgt zijn officiële schrijversdebuut met de uitgave van de bundel Verzen in De Vrije Bladen. Doorslaggevend voor Vestdijks uiteindelijke keuze voor de literatuur is zijn ontmoeting in 1932 met Eddy Du Perron en Menno ter Braak. Deze ontmoeting had tot resultaat dat hij redactielid werd van het tijdschrift Forum Kort daarop, in 1933, wordt zijn eerste novelle, De oubliette, uitgegeven. In hetzelfde jaar schrijft hij Kind tussen vier vrouwen, dat, eerst geweigerd door de uitgever, later de basis zal vormen voor de eerste drie delen van de Anton Wachter-romans. In 1951 ontvangt Vestdijk de P.C. Hooftprijs voor zijn in 1947 verschenen roman De vuuraanbidders. In 1957 wordt hij voor het eerst door het PEN-centrum voor Nederland voorgedragen voor de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur, die hij echter nooit zal krijgen. Op 20 maart 1971 wordt hem de Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren toegekend, maar voor hij deze kan ontvangen overlijdt hij op 23 maart te Utrecht op 72-jarige leeftijd. Vestdijk was auteur van ca. 200 boeken. Vanwege deze enorme productie noemde de dichter Adriaan Roland Holst hem 'de man die sneller schrijft dan God kan lezen'. Andere belangrijke boeken van Simon Vestdijk zijn: "Kind van stad en land" (1936), "Meneer Visser's hellevaart" (1936), "Ierse nachten" (1946), "De toekomst de religie" (1947), "Pastorale 1943" (1948), "De koperen tuin" (1950), "Ivoren wachters" (1951), "Essays in duodecimo" (1952) en "Het genadeschot" (1964).
K.P. Kavafis K.P. Kavafis werd als kind van Griekse ouders, afkomstig uit Konstantinopel, geboren in 1863 in Alexandrië (tot vandaag een Griekse enclave) waar hij ook het grootste deel van zijn leven woonde en werkte. Twee jaar na de dood van zijn vader verhuist het gezin in 1872 naar Engeland om na een verblijf van vijf jaar naar Alexandrië terug te keren. Vanwege ongeregeldheden in Egypte vlucht het gezin in 1882 naar Konstantinopel, om na drie jaar opnieuw naar Alexandrië terug te gaan. In de jaren die volgen maakt Kavafis reizen naar Parijs, Londen en in 1901 zijn eerste reis naar Griekenland, in latere jaren gevolgd door nog enkele bezoeken. Op de dag van zijn zeventigste verjaardag, in 1933 sterft Kavafis in Alexandrië. De roem kwam voor Kavafis pas na zijn dood, dus postuum. Deels is dat toe te schrijven aan zijn eigen handelswijze. Hij was uiterst terughoudend met de publicatie van zijn gedichten, liet af en toe een enkel gedicht afdrukken in een literair tijdschrift, gaf in eigen beheer enkele bundels met een stuk of twintig gedichten uit en het merendeel van zijn poëzie schonk hij op losse bladen aan zijn beste vrienden.
Thomas Mann
Thomas Mann, de jongere broer van Heinrich Mann, werd geboren op 6 juni 1875 in Lübeck. Hij was de tweede zoon van de graankoopman Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann welke later één van de senatoren van Lübreck werd. Zijn moeder Julia (geboren da Silva-Bruhns) was Duits-Braziliaans van Portugees Kreoolse afkomst. In 1894 debuteerde Thomas Mann met de novelle "Gefallen". Toen Thomas Mann met 21 jaar eindelijk volwassen was en hem dus geld van zijn vaders erfenis toestond - hij kreeg ongeveer 160 tot 180 goldmark per jaar - besloot hij dat hij genoeg had van al die scholen en instituties en werd onafhankelijk schrijver. Kenmerkend voor zijn stijl zijn de ironie, de fenomenale taalbeheersing en de minutieuze detailschildering. Manns reputatie in Duitsland was sterk wisselend. Met zijn eerste roman, Buddenbrooks (1901), had hij een enorm succes, maar door zijn sceptische houding tegenover Duitsland na de Eerste Wereldoorlog veranderde dit volledig. Stelde hij zich tot aan de jaren twintig apolitiek op (Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen, 1918), meer en meer raakte hij bij het Politiek gebeuren betrokken. Zijn afkeer van het nationaal socialisme groeide, zijn waarschuwingen werden veelvuldiger en heftiger. In 1944 accepteerde hij het Amerikaanse staatsburgerschap. Tussen 1943 en 1947 schreef Mann Doktor Faustus (zie Faust), de roman van de 'Duitse ziel' in de gecamoufleerd geschilderde omstandigheden van de 20ste eeuw. In 1947 bezocht hij voor het eerst sinds de Oorlog Europa, twee jaar later pas Duitsland. In 1952 vertrok hij naar Zwitserland. Op 12 augustus 1955 stierf hij in Zürich. Twintig jaar na zijn dood, in aug. 1975, is zijn literaire nalatenschap geopend: dagboekaantekeningen van 15 maart 1933 tot 29 juli 1955, alsmede notities uit de jaren 1918 tot en met 1921.Belangrijke werken zijn: Der Zauberberg, Der Tod in Venedig, Dokter Faustus , Joseph und seine Brüder en Die Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull.
Rainer Maria Rilke
Rilke werd op 4 december 1875 geboren in Praag. Hij had al naam gemaakt als dichter met zijn bundels Das Stundenbuch en Das Buch der Bilder, toen hij de literaire wereld versteld deed staan en wereldfaam verwierf met de publicatie van zijn twee delen Neue Gedichte in 1907 en 1908. Hij verzamelde daarin het beste werk uit een van zijn vruchtbaarste periodes, die hij grotendeels doorbracht in Parijs. Rilke was daar diep onder de indruk gekomen van Rodin, bij wie hij een tijdlang in dienst was als particulier secretaris. Rodin, zei hij later, had hem leren kijken. Dit kijken kwam neer op intense concentratie, om het mysterie te kunnen zien ‘achter de schijnbare werkelijkheid'. Latere en rijpere werken als Duineser Elegien (1912-1923) en het ronduit schitterende Die Sonette an Orfeus (1924) illustreren Rilkes metafysische visie op het onzegbare, dat haar verwoording vindt in een hermetische muzikale taal. Op 29 december 1926 overlijdt Rilke in het sanatorium in Val-Mont aan de gevolgen van leukemie. Enkele dagen later wordt hij, overeenkomstig zijn wens, begraven op het kerkhof van Raron.

“I hit hard ice this time, and it knocked the little breath left out of me. My jeans and jacket were already frozen worse than a straitjacket, and the shivers came so bad my teeth felt like they were about to shatter. I knew my Zippo was in my coat pocket but probably wet to uselessness. Push bad thoughts away. One thing at a time. First things first. I crawled quick as I could, trying to stand and walk, and I frankensteined my way to the trees and began snapping dry twigs from a dead spruce. After I made a pile, I reached into my chest pocket, breaking the ice from the material that felt hard as iron now. My fingers had lost all feel. I reached for my cigarettes, struggled to pull one from my pack, and clinked open the lighter. I’d decided that if the lighter worked, I‘d enjoy a cigarette as I started a fire. It the lighter didn't work, I’d freeze to death and searchers would find me with an unlit smoke in my mouth, looking cool as the Marlboro Man. On the fifteenth thumb roll I got the lighter going. I was saved for the first time. I reached for my flask in my ass pocket and struggled to open it. Within five minutes I had a fire going. Within fifteen I’d siphoned fuel from my tank and had one of the greatest fires of my life burning, so hot I had to stand away from it, slowly rotating my body like a sausage. The darkness of a James Bay night in January is something you two girls know well. Annie, you’re old enough to remember your grandfather. Suzanne, I don't know. I hope so.Your moshum, he liked nothing more than taking you girls out, bundled up like mummies, to look at the stars and especially the northern lights that flickered over the bay. He’d tell you two that they danced just for you, showed you how to rub your fists together to make them burn brighter. Do you remember? My first crash ended good. My old friend Chief Joe flew out to me the next morning. found me by the smoky fire I’d kept burning all night. We got my plane unstuck and had a couple of good drinks and he gave me a spare pair of boots. Then Joe went to find those trappers and I got my gas lines unfrozen and flew home to Helen. Joe quit flying soon after that. He was ready for something else. Me, I kept going. I had no other choice. A wife who wanted children, the idea of a family to feed coming to us like a good sunrise on the horizon. I made my choices. I was young still, young enough to believe you can put out your gill net and pull in options like fish. The snow’s deep here, nieces. I'm tired, but I have to keep walking. I’m so tired, but I‘ve got to get up or I'll freeze to death. Talking to you, it keeps me warm.”
“Then came 9/11. Most Americans were quick to understand that they were at war and recognized the need for a firm response (though there was, and continues to be, much disagreement as to whether the response decided upon was the right one). Yet while most Western European countries participated in the invasion of Afghanistan and several helped topple Saddam, America's forceful approach alienated opinion makers across the continent and opened up a philosophical gulf that sometimes seemed as wide as the Atlantic itself. Why was there such a striking difference in perspectives between the two halves of the democratic West? One reason was that the Western European establishment--the political, media, and academic elite that articulates what we think of as "European opinion"--tended to regard all international disputes as susceptible to peaceful resolution. It was therefore ill equipped to respond usefully to sustained violence by a fierce, uncompromising adversary. Another reason was Western Europe's large immigrant communities, many of them led by fundamentalist Muslims who looked forward to the establishment in Europe of a caliphate governed according to sharia law--the law of the Koran--and who viewed Islamist terrorists as allies in a global jihad, or holy war, dedicated to that goal. A fear of inflaming minorities who took their lead from such extremists was one more reason to tread gently. Few European politicians had challenged this passivity. The Dutchman Pim Fortuyn had done so, and been murdered for it. Not even the March 2004 bombings in Madrid--"Europe's 9/11"--had fully awakened Europe's sleeping elite. True, not all European Muslims shared the terrorists' goals and loyalties. Many, one gathered, were grateful to be living in democracies. Yet even they seemed hamstrung by the belief that loyalty to the umma (the worldwide Islamic community) overrode any civic obligations to their kaffir (infidel) neighbors. Hence most European Muslims responded passively to van Gogh's murder. Few spoke up against the extremists in their midst. The pressure--from without and within--to stick by their own was, it appeared, simply too overwhelming. And the potential price for betrayal was an end not unlike that dealt out to Theo van Gogh. “

Clara strolled in the garden with the children. The sky was green over the grass, the water was golden under the bridges, other elements were blue and rose and orange, a policeman smiled, bicycles passed, a girl stepped onto the lawn to catch a bird, the whole world--Germany, China-- all was quiet around Clara.
The children looked at the sky: it was not forbidden. Mouth, nose, eyes were open. There was no danger. What Clara feared were the flu, the heat, the insects. Clara feared missing the eleven o'clock trolley: She waited for letters slow to arrive, She couldn't always wear a new dress. But she strolled in the garden, in the morning! They had gardens, they had mornings in those days!
Boy Crying In The Night
In the warm, humid night, noiseless and dead, a boy cries. His crying behind the wall, the light behind the window are lost in the shadow of muffled footsteps, of tired voices. Yet the sound of medicine poured into a spoon can be heard.

João loved Teresa who loved Raimundo who loved Maria who loved Joaquim who loved Lili who loved nobody. João left to the United States, Teresa to a convent, Raimundo died in a crash, Maria became an old maid, Joaquim killed himself and Lili married J. Fernandes Pinto who hadn't been in the story.

An der Zeit war es nun, Überschriften der Morgenblätter zu ertragen, die tagblassen Mädchen, die Beamten – und Zughunde vor Fleischerwagen. Schwer ächzte draußen das Haustor. Eugen stand auf der Straße. Die kommenden Stunden niederzuringen, war außerordentlich schwierig. Um diese Zeit saß Agathe gebückt vor einer grünbeschirmten Lampe und übertrug Zahlen aus vielen färbigen Zetteln in ein unmäßig großes Buch. Und unweit von dort, an einem niedrigen Pulte sitzend, schrieb Heinrich Hessl ebenfalls an Zahlen. So verschiedener Art die Zahlen auch waren, in deren engen Kreisen Agathe, die Geliebte, und Heinrich Hessl, der Freund, lebten, hielt sie doch der schmale Gurt irgend eines Gemeinsamen zusammen. Denn: wirklich waren die Geschäftsfälle gewesen, die Agathes Feder zu selbständigen geistigen Dingen machte, und wirklich waren die Kriege, Belagerungen und Stadteinnahmen gewesen, deren Jahrzahlen Heinrich Hessl kalt und entseelend in seine blauen Kolleghefte schrieb. Ein Mensch hatte von Agathes Firma am 16. Jänner fünf Fässer Wein gekauft und sie entsprechend bezahlt. Ein kleiner Mensch vielleicht, mit rundlich wintergerötetem Antlitz und blinkenden, dicken, ungefaßten Brillen. Unmenschlich aber und kalt, jedoch klar und bestimmt stand in Agathes Buch: Jänner 16., M. Korn & Sohn, 5 Faß Burgunder A. Und auch aus Heinrich Hessls Zahlen stieg kein Geruch von Lagerküchen, oder Stampfen von Pferdehufen. Und dennoch waren Agathe, die Geliebte, und Heinrich Hessl, der Freund, noch hineinverwoben in ein Allgemeines, das man Sinn oder Leben oder Gesellschaft nennen mag, waren umstützt und gehalten von einer äußeren Gestalt der Dinge. Sorgsam geführt waren sie vom vorbestimmten Lauf ihrer Stunden, der hinführen mochte, wohin er wollte: in irgend einen Traum oder eine ferne Landschaft, der aber da sein mußte, den sie mitliefen, hungrig und voller Angst, ihn zu verlieren.“

"And here's my cut." "But...what about the cameras?" I asked, pointing to one right above her head. "Oh...yeah, about the cameras. They're fake. $9.95 at Radio Shack. The owner's tight with money." She smiled. "I'm sure that'll change after tonight." She handed me my big bag of unearned cash and offered her hand. "Name's Melissa." I shook her hand. "And I'm Ni...not gonna tell you! Nice try." She dropped to her knees, covered her face with her hands and began crying. "He was a relentless madman, officer! He kept waving the gun in my face and talked about killing my whole family! "Right then, comrades," I said, squeezing my way between the little guy and the rapper. The beautiful hands instantly barred my way. "Where do you live?" "Zhenya Egorova Street." The rapper opened his eyes wide and laughed. But he kept on standing there like a traffic barrier, with his arms spread wide. "That's fucking far away, Nigger," the little kid announced gleefully. "Give me your number," the rapper said to me, not listening to him. I shrugged again and rattled off my number. The quicker you tell them, the quicker they lay off you. Nigger wrote the number on his hand and gave me back my pen. "Denya lives there; he'll see her home," Nigger answered the kid confidently, maintaining the siege. Half an hour later my ears were popping on the metro, and sitting there beside me staring into empty space was Denya, the one whose head Vova had put a hole in. The scar was clearly visible - stitched up and daubed with bright green ointment. Denya was like Ryan Gosling in The Believer. The same shaved head, eyes bunched together, straight nose, beaky lips. But on the whole not too bad, pretty tasty. At least he didn't come on to me. My nerves were already stretched worrying about my bare legs and skintight T-shirt. You can never tell.”

„Das war am Montag. Am Dienstag war ich mit meinen chaldäisch-aramäischen Studien beschäftigt. Ein warmer, sogar heißer Dienstag war es, mit einem nahezu wolkenlosen Himmel, trotzdem hatte ich mich in meine Bibliothek im ersten Stock eingeschlossen, deren Fenster noch dazu nach Norden hinausgehen. Es war kühl hier drinnen, die lange Reihe der goldgepreßten Lederrücken, die ich mir zugelegt hatte – sechsundzwanzig Bände Pflugk-Hartung! – spiegelte das Licht der großen, grünen Sommerkugel wider. Ich gebe zu, es war wegen der Lederrücken, daß ich sie mir geleistet hatte, es hätte auch die gekürzte Ausgabe sein können, oder die broschierte, aber ich leistete mir die sechsundzwanzigbändige. Vielleicht heute nicht mehr. Dazu den Wieland-Kroll, der steht in Weinrot und Moosgrün auf der anderen Seite, achtzehnbändig. Meine Studien haben mich über Jahre systematisch in die Denkungsart vorderasiatischer Kulturen sowie überhaupt frühgeschichtlicher Menschheitsperioden eingeführt. Ich erheische, mit einigem Realitätsbezug, wie ein Hethiter aus der Zeit Darius des Ersten denken zu können – und, wenn es darauf ankäme, zu handeln. Beachtliches Echo erzeugte meine 98 im „History-Sheffield“ erschienene Abhandlung über Tempelprostitution im alten Ninife (genauer gesagt im „neuen“ Ninife), in der ich die Stellung der Frau spezifiziere, welche von Staats wegen ausnahmslos – verheiratet oder nicht verheiratet – ein Jahr lang in den Lustparks der Tempelbezirke ihren Dienst zu verrichten hatte. Das zog einiges Echo nach sich. Ich meine, es war die Veröffentlichung, bekannt war es natürlich. So wie ich auch auf zwei meiner Arbeiten über den Tantrakult an der indischen Ostküste (wedische Zeit) verweisen kann. Ebenfalls im Rahmen meiner frühhistorischen Studien. An diesem Tag schrieb ich anderthalb durchschnittlich gute Seiten eines Skripts „Die Kinder Sems“, an dem ich seit vier Jahren arbeite und nachweise, daß das Hebräische, Aramäische und Arabische gemeinsamen Ursprungs im semitischen Sprachraum sind – beziehe mich auf die Genesis (Kap. 10), wo die Stammväter dieser Völkerschaften als Kinder des Sem, Sohn des Noah bezeichnet wurden. Alttestamentarisch. Vergleichbar mit dem sumerischen „Elam“ – – aber ich möchte hier nicht zu weit gehen, kam auch nicht mehr weit an diesem sehr schönen Morgen. Zwei Seiten weit. Bis zwölf Uhr. Dann ging ich ins Jakobi-Bad.“
De Amerikaanse schrijver, psychiater en journalist Andrew Solomon werd geboren op 30 oktober 1963 in New York. Hij voltooide zijn middelbare school in 1981 cum laude. Hij behaalde zijn Bachelor in 1985 magna cum laude aan de Yale University. Zijn master in Engels behaalde hij aan het Jesus College, Cambridge. In 2013promoveerde hij in de psychologie aan dezelfde universiteit. Andrew Solomon is de oudste zoon van Carolyn Bower Solomon en Howard Solomon, een CEO van het farmaceutische bedrijf Forest Laboratories. De ervaring, aanwezig te zijn bij de geplande zelfmoord van zijn moeder, die leed aan een ongeneeslijke kanker van de eierstokken heeft Solomon onder andere beschreven in een artikel voor The New Yorker, in zijn roman “A Stone Boat” en in zijn boek “The Noonday Demon”. Solomon leed na de zelfmoord van zijn moeder aan een depressie, die hij met psychotherapie en een antidepressivum onder controle kreeg. Als volwassene verwief Solomon de dubbele nationaliteit van zowel de VS als het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Hij woont samen met de journalist John Habich in een geregistreerd partnerschap. Het paar trouwde in 2009 een tweede keer in Connecticut, zodat hun huwelijk ook in de Amerikaanse staat New York zou worden erkend. In 2003 besloten Solomon en zijn oude vriendin Blaine Smith om samen om een kind te krijgen. Hun dochter werd geboren in november 2007. Moeder en dochter wonen in Texas. Een gemeenschappelijke zoon, George Charles Habich Salomon werd geboren in 2009 en woont in New York, samen met Solomon en Habich. Habich is zijn adoptievader. Habich is ook de biologische vader van twee kinderen die door een lesbisch stel worden opgevoed. De ontwikkeling van deze patchwork familie was het onderwerp van een essay, dat Solomon in Newsweek heeft beschreven en die ook geportretteerd werd in The Observer. Onder de tijdschriften en kranten, waarin hij heeft gepubliceerd, onder andere The New York Times, The New Yorker, Artforum en Travel and Leisure. Hij ontving o.a. de National Book Award 2001 en werd genomineerd in 2002 voor de Pulitzer Prize. The Times koos “The Noonday Demon”. als een van de honderd beste boeken van het decennium. I remember when that was an event in my life-to take a plane somewhere-but now planes are the most regular occurrence of all; I am the emperor of baggage claim, the king of check-in, the prime minister of in-flight meals. I am as savvy as a flight attendant, with a profound knowledge of the location of the emergency exits and an aficionado’s grasp of the technology of seat belts. I can guess within a fraction of a second when the “No Smoking” sign will go on. I have figured out how to angle myself so that the overhead reading light illuminates my book and not my hair, and I know where the further extra pillows are stored when the first cache of extra pillows has been distributed. I have mastered the look that bores customs oflicers, and even when I am carrying great misshapen boxes and large cumbersome suitcases, I am not stopped on my way out of the airport. ‘Is het ver?’ vroeg hij. ‘Half uur,’ zei Mooney. De bebouwing dunde spoedig uit en ze snelden over een lange weg van stof en steenslag tussen hoofdzakelijk ‘niets’, zoals Charlie geneigd was om landbouwgronden te noemen. Er reden bijna evenveel auto’s als rijtuigjes. Louie en Charlie hadden hun hoeden afgenomen en lieten de lauwe wind door hun haren spelen. De zon scheen en het was warm genoeg voor hemdsmouwen. Goed dat ze hun overjassen hadden verpand. ‘Is het waar dat het hier nooit regent?’ riep Louie. ‘Nee,’ zei Mooney. Charlie zag eruit als een heer en gedroeg zich als een heer, meestal, maar in feite was hij een niksnut uit de Bowery en hoe hij op intieme voet was geraakt met een erfgename, was Louie een raadsel. Vader Whitfield wilde niet minder dan een halve aardbol afstand tussen de geliefden. Hij verscheepte Eleanor naar Londen, Engeland, en wilde dat Charlie minstens een jaar naar de westkust ging. Het huis van Whitfield waar hij in mocht wonen, zou na dat jaar zijn eigendom worden. Charlie tekende een contract. Het sprak vanzelf dat Louie met hem mee zou gaan. Sinds ze voor de poort van een weeshuis waren gedropt, had Charlie zijn driejarige broer onder zijn hoede genomen. Zelf was hij toen nog maar zeven, maar van meet af aan een man. Stilaan wilde Louie ook wel als een man worden beschouwd. Die bolhoed was misschien een start. Mooney sloeg een onverharde zijstraat in en stopte aan de kant van de weg, waar normaal een stoep zou zijn geweest. Toen de motor zweeg, waren er plots tjilpende vogels en ruisende bomen te horen. En vervolgens het tikken van afkoelend autometaal. ‘We zijn er,’ zei Mooney.”

“Wat betreft mijn indeling van de mensen in gewone en buitengewone, ik moet toegeven dat die enigszins willekeurig is, maar ik sta immers niet op exacte cijfers. Ik geloof alleen in mijn belangrijkste gedachte. Die behelst namelijk dat de mensen volgens de wet van de natuur over het algemeen in twee categorieën worden verdeeld: in een lagere (van de gewone), dus zogezegd in materiaal dat alleen maar dient tot het voortbrengen van zijn eigen soort, en in eigenlijke mensen, dat wil zeggen in hen die de gave of het talent bezitten om in hun milieu iets nieuws te verkondigen. Er zijn hierbij vanzelfsprekend eindeloze onderverdelingen, maar beide categorieën zijn nogal scherp afgebakend: de eerste categorie, het materiaal dus in het algemeen gesproken, is die van de van nature conservatieve en keurige mensen, die in gehoorzaamheid leven en ervan houden om gehoorzaam te zijn. Volgens mij is het ook hun plicht om gehoorzaam te zijn omdat dit hun bestemming is, en hierin steekt voor hen absoluut niets vernederends. De mensen van de tweede categorie overtraden allen de wet; het zijn omverwerpers of gezien hun kwaliteiten daartoe geneigd. Het spreekt vanzelf dat de misdaden van deze mensen betrekkelijk en zeer verschillend zijn; zij eisen merendeels, in uitingen van velerlei vorm, de omverwerping van het bestaand ein naam van het betere; Maar indien hij voor zijn ideaal over lijken zou moeten gaan of bloed moeten vergieten, dan kan hij zichzelf volgens mij, innerlijk, met een zuiver geweten, veroorloven om bloed te vergieten; echter, bedenk dit wel: met inachtneming van het ideaal en zijn maatstaven. Het is dan ook slechts in deze zin dat ik in mijn artikel over hun recht op misdaad spreek. (u herinnert zich toch dat we van het juridische vraagstuk uitgingen?) Er is trouwens weinig reden tot ongerustheid: de massa zal hun bijna nooit dat recht toekennen; die stelt hen terecht en hangt hen op (min of meer) en vervult daarmee geheel rechtmatig haar conservatieve bestemming, met het voorbehoud echter dat deze zelfde massa in de volgende generaties de terechtgestelden op een voetsutk plaatst en hen (min of meer) vereert. De eerste categorie is altijd heer van het heden, de tweede categorie is heer van de toekomst. De eersten behoeden de gemeenschap en zorgen voor getalsmatige vermeerdering; die van de tweede houden de gemeenschap in beweging en leiden haar naar haar bestemming. „Eine rumänische Pflegerin hob den Hörer ab und gab ihn weiter an die Frau im Liegestuhl. Die murmelte: »Io dormo, io dormo.« Der Mann mit den zwei Augen lachte und sagte: »Seit wann können Sie Italienisch? Ich bin’s, hören Sie? Sie schlafen nicht, Sie telefonieren mit mir.« Daraufhin bekam sie einen Hustenanfall, und er verabschiedete sich. Io dormo, io dormo waren ihre letzten Worte gewesen. Am Abend starb sie. Einen Tag vorher war auch ihre einundzwanzigjährige Katze gestorben. Das hatte der Mann ihr eigentlich mitteilen wollen. Die Katze war ihr als halbwüchsiges, verwildertes Tier zugelaufen und blieb bis zuletzt schmal und scheu. Sie hatte auffallend große, fast durchsichtige Ohren und machte nur selten, völlig unerwartet, zwei, drei Schritte auf Menschen zu, um sich dann ohne übertriebene Eile wieder von ihnen zu entfernen. Den Mann mit den zwei Augen hatte sie grundsätzlich nicht beachtet. Nur ein einziges Mal hatte sie sich ihm vorsichtig genähert, war ihm ums rechte Bein gestrichen und danach mit senkrecht erhobenem Schwanz davongegangen. Wie es dazu gekommen war, lässt sich nicht rekonstruieren. Er freute sich jedenfalls sehr darüber und dachte, nun hätte er sie für sich gewonnen. Als junges Tier hatte sie eine porzellanzarte, rosarote Nase. Manchmal vergaß sie, die Zungenspitze ins Maul zurückzuziehen. Den Ausdruck ihres Gesichts hätte man dann als leicht besorgt umschreiben können. Sie erweckte ihr ganzes Leben lang den Eindruck, schwere Verantwortung zu tragen zu haben. Was für ein Ernst! Was für ein zierlicher Körper! Was für kühle, weiche Pfoten! Wer keine Katzen mag, wird verständnislos den Kopf schütteln über diese Zeilen. Der Mann mit den zwei Augen konnte nicht anders, ihm gefielen Tiere. In deren Umgebung war ihm wohl, und die Freude, am Leben zu sein, flammte jeweils kurz in ihm auf. Von Pferden zum Beispiel wusste er, dass sie schlecht schlafen, wenn man sie nachts allein draußen lässt. Pferde bewachen wechselseitig ihren Schlaf. Dies zu wissen beglückte ihn.“
„Jemand etwas ins Stammbuch schreiben, ist ein verblasster Ausdruck. Die Sitte, dass man sich zum Namen einen Satz oder Denkspruch in ein eigens dafür vorgesehenes Buch schreiben lässt, ist schon lange aus der Mode gekommen. Im 16. Jahrhundert verbreitete sich der Brauch der livres d’amis oder libri d’amici über ganz Europa und erlebte im19. Jahrhundert seine Hochblüte. Gunst- oder Freundschaftsbekundung,Rat oder Lebensweisheit – die Freundeschrieben es einander ins Stammbuch, wie auch die Eltern den Kindern und Enkeln oder die Professoren ihren Studenten. Im Faust richtet der Schüler an Mephisto die Bitte: »Ich kann unmöglich wieder gehn, / Ich muß Euch noch mein Stammbuch überreichen. / Gönn’ Eure Gunst mir dieses Zeichen!« Widmungsgedichte und Stammbuchverse gehören in die Produktion unserer klassischen und romantischen Dichter. Auch Achim von Arnim schrieb dergleichen Gelegenheitspoesien. Zu seinen letzten Veröffentlichungen gehörten die »Ausgestreuten Stammbuchblätter« aus dem Berliner Musenalmanach für 1831. Unser Gedicht ist ein Einzelstück aus Arnims Nachlaß. Es wurde nach Bettines Handschrift unter dem Titel »In das Stammbuch eines jungen Kaufmanns« gedruckt. Das originale Stammbuchblatt trug eine Widmung an Leberecht von Guaita, datiert auf den 19.11.1828. Dieser Leberecht, damals ein junger Mann von 14 Jahren, war der jüngere Sohn von Bettines Schwester Meline. Er war mit seiner Familie von Frankfurt Anfang November 1828 nach Berlin gekommen, wo sein älterer Bruder Karl immatrikuliert wurde. Man kann nicht sagen, daß Arnims kleines Gedicht besondere Rücksicht auf den jungen Adressaten nimmt. Doch heiter und leicht gefügt ist es schon, und man meint jenen »Luftzug von Ironie« in ihm zu erkennen, den Clemens Brentano in Arnims Gedichten sehen wollte.“

“A few years ago there was a rumor that I had been murdered at my house in Prud'homme, Connecticut, by a cross-country serial killer of rich older men. Of course, it wasn't true, although it was a rumor that lingered for a while: Gus Bailey was dead. There was indeed a serial killer at the time, who was very much in the news. He had just killed a couturier in Miami who was so famous that Princess Diana and Elton John and his future husband attended the funeral in Milan. I confess now to having been the person who started the rumor. I couldn't figure out how to finish a novel I was writing at the time, and I wanted desperately to leave the next day for the Cannes Film Festival with Stokes Bishop, my editor at Park Avenue magazine, who assured me in advance that I was to be seated between the French film star Catherine Deneuve and Princess Olga of Greece at the magazine's party at the Hôtel du Cap in Antibes. I didn't want to miss that so I just grabbed the headline news of the murder in Miami and added Gus Bailey to the killer's list, thus ending the novel, and I flew to France. Do I regret having done that? Yes. My name is Augustus Bailey, but I am called Gus Bailey by everyone who knows me. It happens that I am often recognized by strangers on the street, or in public places, and even those people call me Gus. I only use Augustus Bailey on my passport, my driver's license, the covers of the books I write, my monthly diaries for Park Avenue magazine, and the weekly introductions on my cable television series, Augustus Bailey Presents, which I host. I thought it best to tell you a bit about myself before I get into the story that I am about to tell. It should be pointed out that it is a regular feature of my life that people whisper things in my ear, very private things, about themselves, or about others. The tsar our little father had grown old, very old. Now he could not even strangle a dove with his own hands. Sitting on his throne he was golden and frigid. Only his beard grew, down to the floor and farther.
Then someone else ruled, it was not known who. Curious folk peeped into the palace windows but Krivonosov screened the windows with gibbets. Thus only the hanged saw anything.
In the end the tsar our little father died for good. The bells rang and rang, yet they did not bring his body out. Our tsar had grown into the throne. The legs of the throne had become all mixed up with the legs of the tsar. His arm and the armrest were one. It was impossible to tear him loose. Terwijl het koffiezetapparaat begint te pruttelen, trek ik de keukendeur open en stap naar buiten. Het ontwaken van de dag, de uren rondom zonsopkomst, daar draait het allemaal om. Ik heb een vaste route die me in een klein uur over mijn favoriete paden zal leiden. Mijn wereldreis voor dag en dauw, of: mijn veldtocht voor het ontbijt. Niet alleen is het een prachtige wandeling, in alle rust en frisheid die de ochtend met zich meebrengt, maar meer nog is het een vorm van leiderschap, een manier om als directeur het bedrijf op de huid te zitten, om als eerste te weten hoe mijn dierentuin erbij staat, hoe de beesten eraan toe zijn. Schuin tegenover de directeurswoning woont de kleine panda, altijd doezelend in haar eenzame boom. Elke ochtend als ik langsloop klap ik even in mijn handen, waarna de panda kort haar lichtbruine kopje opricht, maar deze ochtend reageert ze niet. Ik klap opnieuw, ditmaal harder, maar zelfs de bonte bruine staart komt niet in beweging. Leuk beest, dat altijd precies doet waar ze zin in heeft. In een draf wandel ik langs kantoorgebouw De Verwachting naar de mensapen. Sinds ik directeur ben, heb ik over de chimpansee een aantal populaire studies gelezen. De meeste vrouwtjes zijn de afgelopen dagen vruchtbaar geworden, hun aarzen en genitaliën zijn zo roze als het glazuur op een tompouce, gezwollen als een ballon. In het apenhuis zie ik de jonge mannetjes rondspringen als losgeslagen pubers, hun hormonen achterna.”
De Engelse schrijver Lee Child (pseudoniem van Jim Grant) werd geboren op 29 oktober 1954 in Coventry. Hij groeide echter op in Birmingham, waar hij de school bezocht waar onder andere J.R.R. Tolkien ook leerling geweest was. Hij studeerde rechten, maar ging na zijn studie in het theater werken. Hij werd in dienst genomen door Granada Television in Manchester en werkte in de 18 jaren die volgden onder andere aan series als “Brideshead Revisited”, “The Jewel in the Crown”, “Prime Suspect” en “Cracker”. In 1995 werd hij vanwege een reorganisatie ontslagen en besloot hij in zijn levensonderhoud te voorzien als schrijver. Hij schreef zijn eerste boek met de hand aan de eettafel omdat hij met de aanschaf van een computer wilde wachten tot hij succes had als schrijver. Dat succes kwam met dat eerste boek. “Killing Floor” en sindsdien is Child professioneel schrijver. Hij woont voornamelijk in Manhattan, maar heeft ook een huis in Zuid-Frankrijk. Alle boeken van Lee Child hebben de Amerikaanse ex-militair Jack Reacher als hoofdpersoon. Reacher, die uit eigen beweging het leger heeft verlaten, leidt een zwervend bestaan in de Verenigde Staten, waar hij zijn avonturen beleeft. Cilds roman "One Shot" werd verfilmd onder de titel “Jack Reacher” en de film is eind 2012 première gegaan met Tom Cruise in de rol van Jack Reacher..

“I was arrested in Eno's diner. At twelve o'clock. I was eating eggs and drinking coffee. A late breakfast, not lunch. I was wet and tired after a long walk in heavy rain. All the way from the highway to the edge of town. The diner was small, but bright and clean. Brand-new, built to resemble a converted railroad car. Narrow, with a long lunch counter on one side and a kitchen bumped out back. Booths lining the opposite wall. A doorway where the center booth would be. I was in a booth, at a window, reading somebody's abandoned newspaper about the campaign for a President I didn't vote for last time and wasn't going to vote for this time. Outside, the rain had stopped but the glass was still pebbled with bright drops. I saw the police cruisers pull into the gravel lot. They were moving fast and crunched to a stop. Light bars flashing and popping. Red and blue light in the raindrops on my window. Doors burst open, policemen jumped out. Two from each car, weapons ready. Two revolvers, two shotguns. This was heavy stuff. One revolver and one shotgun ran to the back. One of each rushed the door. I just sat and watched them. I knew who was in the diner. A cook in back. Two waitresses. Two old men. And me. This operation was for me. I had been in town less than a half hour. The other five had probably been here all their lives. Any problem with any of them and an embarrassed sergeant would have shuffled in. He would be apologetic. He would mumble to them. He would ask them to come down to the station house. So the heavy weapons and the rush weren't for any of them. They were for me. I crammed egg into my mouth and trapped a five under the plate. Folded the abandoned newspaper into a square and shoved it into my coat pocket. Kept my hands above the table and drained my cup. The guy with the revolver stayed at the door. He went into a crouch and pointed the weapon two-handed. At my head. The guy with the shotgun approached close. These were fit lean boys. Neat and tidy. Textbook moves. The revolver at the door could cover the room with a degree of accuracy. The shotgun up close could splatter me all over the window. The other way around would be a mistake. The revolver could miss in a close-quarters struggle and a long-range shotgun blast from the door would kill the arresting officer and the old guy in the rear booth as well as me. So far, they were doing it right. No doubt about that. They had the advantage. No doubt about that, either. The tight booth trapped me. I was too hemmed in to do much. I spread my hands on the table. The officer with the shotgun came near. "Freeze! Police!" he screamed.”
